He’s still a bad parent but at least he’s trying to fix his mistakes. Not easy to undo 14 years of being mostly neglectful towards his daughter (not sure how different his relationship with Ed and Em is compared to Amity. It’s probably not too much different).
Edit after watching recent episode: No wonder he’s neglectful. Odalia literally abuses and threatens him into submission (by saying she’ll make the kids part of the business). Not an excuse for him being a bad parent but at least there’s a reason

Make that 16 or years to include Ed and Em too. I'm pretty sure both him and Odalia neglected the twins badly while they controlled and Manipulated Amity.

I don't think it was all neglect? I mean, Amity said 'You don't talk to us anymore'. I mean, it was still neglect but it feels like their relationship were better. So Amity tries to connect back to her dad.

Gabriel's not a sympathetic, compelling or competent villain. Unsympathetic, he repeatedly torments his kid while the writing has him flip-flop from loving father to controlling jerk in a heartbeat. To follow off my last point, if they wanted him to be compelling they should've shown how he became this way and that trying to gather the Ladybug and Cat Miraculous have fractured his relationship with his son and how it's ruining their relationship but still not redeem him, but Wishmaker demonstrated that the relationship was always terrible. (Heck you want to see Gabriel done right, Castlevania on Netflix). He does the same thing in every episode (occasionally throwing in a Sentimonster for variety). He didn't even with in Strikeback, Felix gave him pity Miraculous to get the Peacock which is just a stupid move. Sure Felix hates Ladybug, but Gabriel threatened to kill him in 'Gabriel Agreste' why would Felix help him in any way. Also yeah he's free from the Peacock Miraculous but now if Gabriel wanted to he has 15 new ways to attack him, that Felix gave him. That finale was so stupid once you start thinking about it. Why not have him join up with Ladybug, manipulating both Marinette's stalker crush on Adrien and Adrien's self-entitled crush on Ladybug to join the team? He helps them defeat Hawkmoth then swipes a few Miraculous and maybe joins up with Lila, or Mayura does literally anything because she really is just Gabriel's sidekick, like how Cat is Ladybug's sidekick but the plot wants to pretend he's her equal.

Honestly none of the main heroes are good people. Marinette's a stalker, nice-girl who feels entitled to Adrien and enjoys him being sad (and honestly the Guardian thing only happened because this show hates her, she has to learn a lesson even if she's right (she wasn't hogging the ball in 'Penalteam', she had every reason not to trust Chloe in 'Antibug' because Chloe intentionally withheld important information that would've helped understand Vanisher's motives, and this show constantly has Adrien getting brainwashed, taken out and getting akumatised to the point where giving him any information about Miraculous-users would be reckless, if Hawkmoth were consistently competent he would've had a villain brainwash Cat Noir into giving him information about who wields Miraculouses) , Adrien's an entitled creep who can't hear no and continually harasses Ladybug rather than make a significant change in himself, he repeatedly endangers others for his feelings for Ladybug, he even picks a fight with her about the hypocrisy of her knowing the temp heroes identities but considering he willingly threw Plagg away because Ladybug wasn't paying attention to him (even though he didn't show up to fights without an explanation, yeah he really doesn't deserve to be called a hero). (seriously if they wanted to have him argue about the Guardian why not have it be about recognizing the stress Ladybug's putting on herself and genuinely wanting to help, not just to learn her identity), Alya supports stalking (also she's only written to be smart when the plot needs her to be, even in the season where she knows who Ladybug is, she still doesn't believe Marinette about Lila). Nino is very controlling thanks 'Rocketear', you made a character I tolerated into one I dislike. Chloe forces herself on Adrien, bullies everyone and honestly this show just wants her to be Hawkmoth so bad, (I wouldn't be surprised if they revealed she became the Hawkmoth of the future, just to spite Ladybug, and because the writers want to have a twist for the sake of having a twist). She had potential if they acknowledged what she did wrong and had her apologize and meaningfully changed including apologizing to Marinette's uncle, and especially Sabrina) and getting information on Hawkmoth from Lila without expecting a reward. (I could be fine with her being racist if they did something with it beyond her just being the worst). They really can't write her in Season 4, so now she's just a pure evil queen of the school, but she's not a main villain, even though they keep trying to make her worse than Hawkmoth. (Oh no Chloe's a climate change denier, sure Gabriel financially supported the project that still would've ruined the environment, helped the person running the project, forced his abused son to model for the project and gave the person running the project the ability to mind-control people into supporting him kill the environment, but a rich teenage girl with neglectful/abusive parents is infinitely worse than a father who abuses and manipulates his child because he's sad about his wife). Zoe has no personality outside of being nice, so there's no character there, like you can have a nice character with flaws, like maybe she's got a temper, or she's self-destructive with how much she does, something). Luka is also perfect, seriously think about his relationship with Marinette, he willingly waits for her to be ready, even though he knows he has no chance with her, due to her feelings for Adrien, his first akumatization has him try to get justice for her and his friends and confess his love for her in a way that moves Tikki, a being that has been alive for millennia, and his second akumatization has him trying to keep Marinette away and while he does try to invade her privacy, he never seems like he's trying to attack Marinette, even having moved on in 'Wishmaker'. Kagami is more proof this show hates teenage girls, she tries to force Adrien to kiss her, most of her dialogue with Marinette is "I'm going to steal your man, because you suck," and her second akumatization is her trying to control Adrien (something Marinette and Gabriel do, but one's his true love interest and the other's a 'sympathetic villain', her third akumatization is just her taking out her breakup-rage on Paris, and I'm supposed to sympathize with Adrien for making no attempts to commit to his girlfriend and wanting someone to be akumatized to see Ladybug, but apparently Kagami's wrong to be mad about the breakup (she still deserves all the hate she gets for the forced kiss).
Honestly I get not making Adrien the Guardian because this show wants to be about 'girl power' but doesn't let Adrien give a chance to prove himself, and yes, white people taking over Asian cultures is a trope that can die, but Marinette's just a biracial version of that, seriously they almost never give her any motive beyond Adrien, hell why not make them both Asian, have Adrien be Gabriel's adopted son and have him fail the Aqua power test because he's too focused on simple solutions that won't work in the long term, or have it be that they both come together to win by recognizing their strengths (quick-thinking, creativity, resourcefulness, focus, straightforwardness) and overcoming their weaknesses (lack of confidence, entitlement, recklessness, selfishness, and their unhealthy levels of self-sacrifice)

Unfortunately, we don't know what could've happened if Alador stood up to Odalia sooner. She was already threatening to force the kids to join her business, and she didn't hesitate to throw her husband aside when he finally made his choice. But what if she intended to do worse? Like cutting Alador off from all three of his children entirely, torturing him with her Oracle necklace, maybe even straight-up killing him with an Abomaton to play it off like an accident. Alador may have neglected his kids, but he was forced to because Odalia would've done a lot worse without him.

As someone who grew up with a not a straight-up abusive, but a neglectful/absent father, I appreciated what they did with Alador in Reaching Out.
My story is different, I have a great mum, who left my dad, who continued to forget more and more that he has a daughter and who, in addition to being neglectful, was also manipulative in that "I'll always find an excuse for not being around and, if all else fails, make you feel bad for making me feel bad for not being around" way. And, we never fixed our relationship. I was 16 when I decided to cut it and, 9 years later, I'm still proud of my former self for making that decision. I haven't regretted it for a moment.
But, back when I was 14, when I was still willing to give him a chance, I had the EXACT type of moment where he went in for a hug while I slipped away and went for a handshake. Hell, similarities continue because my dad and I share interests, we're both creative types. So that scene of them having a tiny bonding moment over a shared interest and then Amity being like "It's a start, but i need more to forgive you", really hit home.
I wouldn't mind if they redeemed Alador, but they have to show him putting in the work. The reason why I cut my dad out of my life is that I never saw him put in the work, not really. He never even had the gall to look guilty when called out, as Alador did.
I would actually love to see it portrayed, not Amity just forgiving him "because he is her dad", but because he took the right steps to make things right.

Not being cut out for parenthood is one thing, but being so neglectful of your child as manipulative and not putting the work in to better your relationship with your children just screams shitty individual.

The way I see it. Alador isn’t as bad as Odalia. It seems like he went with whatever she wanted. Now since he actually talked to his children he seems to be aware of what they actually want and he seems to be supportive of that. He is way more open minded than Odalia and not as controlling. He still has a long way to go to being a good parent, but he is trying to put effort.

It all comes down to what Amity says at the end, I think. "It's a start." She's not going to forgive 14 years of neglect just like that, but Alador is at least capable of understanding and is apparently going to try to be better, so she's willing to give him a chance. He's going to have to put in a lot of effort and make a noticeable change before she returns that hug. And with how well The Owl House handles its heavier topics, I have no doubt that Amity would turn her back on her father if he doesn't put in the work to fix things.
As for Edric and Emira, I feel like there was at least a moment with Alador _planned_ at some point. The scraps of interaction they get in Reaching Out prove the writers do remember that there's a relationship there, one that needs to be worked on. But with the show getting cancelled I wouldn't be surprised if that idea was bumped down on the list of priorities. I'm just hoping that if they commit to Alador trying to be a better father, they throw a few lines or a background scene into an episode somewhere, just to acknowledge that his relationship with Ed and Em needs mending too.

Also, I think the new episode kinda refutes the "Alador is autistic, so he didn't know any better" claim. He didn't know any better because he was strung along by Odalia to believe that her way of raising their kids was the correct way, not because of any disability he may or may not have.

After watching the most recent episode, I don't think he's a good parent, but he also isn't a bad person. He was absent as a parent, but he was also a victim of Odalia's abuse and manipulation. She uses their own children against him to keep him in line, she made him believe the best thing he could do for his kids was to not get involved, because otherwise she would overwork them and treat them the way she treated him. He was also being overworked by her so he literally never had time to do ANYTHING besides work. He wants to be a better parent and he wants to change things.
I don't think it's entirely fair to say "but he should have done more to stand up to her" because he was also being abused by her. There's more information we're missing, but the recent episode revealed a lot about him.
It was also implied that he wasn't always that way, when Amity said, "you don't talk to us anymore." She said _anymore_ which implied he at least used to be more involved.
It's nice that he's recognizing his errors and he's wanting to try to improve things, that he wants to be a better parent and be there for his children.

I think that moment in "Reaching Out" is Alador *trying* to be a good dad, in the way like, parents tell their kids they can't go to a concert because there's like, an SAT practice exam that night at the school even though there's probably going to be another practice exam, but going to that first one shows a stronger drive to succeed, even though it actually proves *nothing* because nobody is paying attention to that.
Overall I think Alador is like.... generally well-meaning but very misguided? At least towards Amity. I really do think he believes he's doing what's best for Amity and her future, but due to his focus being on his job, he doesn't realise until she tells him that Amity isn't the same child she was at the start of the series.
I think he is kind of pushed around by Odalia, but in a way that preys on the fact he's an absent parent. Odalia I think generally calls a lot of the shots and he goes with them because he assumes she knows what's best for the kids as she has more time to spend than he does with them. Alador is a very distant parent. When he sees Odalia is wrong, he does intervene. But when he doesn't have a reason to doubt her, he doesn't question her. I hope this is proven to be true.
I don't think he's a good parent by any means, but I do think like, he has always been trying but with the wrong goal in mind.

Its true that alador is neglectful and such, but the fact he is taking the steps towards recovery with amity enough that in the Amity believes and trusts him to be the one to talk to odalia about the plans of belos. (Alador is still a neglectful father when it comes to the twins, but Im happy he said that he is going to change things and start spending more time with his KIDS(which means including the twins). Also he said he hasnt had a day off in 6 years, which probably means that their relationship wasnt always distant towards his children and instead just developed after their company grew larger and larger which means he had no time with his kids and instead he spent it working. Its just some nice added depth to his situation that I really like.(he might have been a bad parent and still bad in ways still, but he has got to be one of my favorite characters just because of his interesting his situation is in the perspective of the neglectful parent. Just kinda reminds me of my parents at times)

After seeing the most recent episode, he has gotten slightly better and is seemingly going to start taking steps to become a better father. but obviously it doesnt make him a good parent now automatically (you can just undo 14 years of neglect by saying "Good job sweetie!")

Is he a good parent? No
Is he a bad parent? neglectful. But it does seem with the most recent episode,Odalia had placed him on non stop work as he said "I haven't had a day off in 5 years" and mentioning how she cut the workforce in half. He does seem to be an introvert, and Odalia has the stronger outward personality, probably convincing him that the children are fine, and more or less putting some pressure to keep working. So it's not hard to see why he has been absent. 5years from your kids is hard. My parents worked nonstop when I was a kid. Maybe only really seeing them if I got in trouble, if I was sick, or on a rare holiday--They worked on most holidays too. Now that my dad retired he's playing catch-up which is hard for him.
Alador does show interest in his kids., albeit running off of old information. Even at his first appearance, he shows his curiosity about the world around him and tries to interject but Odalia speaks over him.
Newest episode, Odalia speaks as though her pursuits are for the family but takes no interest in their concerns. And doesn't consider the threat of losing everyone who their kids find important. But Alador hears about the day of unity, not only does he fight for his kids, but also for the connections his kids have. He's not good at parenting, but he can play catch-up. The fact that Amity still looks up to him is a good sign that their bond can be mended.

After yesterday's episode, he's really trying to be a better parent to Amity, Emira and Edric. If anything Odalia was the worst kind of parent and is a Karen in animated form and the reason why I'm saying this now was because of recent Amity episodes that showed this kind of toxic parenting and even worse her being a toxic partner to Alador. We all assumed Alador Blight would be the same type of character as Odalia from the episode Understanding Willow but boy howdy we were wrong on that when he made his official debut in Escaping Expulsion, along with Reaching Out, and Clouds on the Horizon where we see the current unhealthy family dynamic of the Blight Family.
Reaching Out showed us how much of a perfectionist and how controlling Odalia is to not only Amity but to Emira and Edric as well as we now know that they use concealment stones to mask their appearances and how oblivious Alador is when it comes to their family an that he followed Odalia's lead believing it would be best for the whole family. Heck Amity even pointed out that he didn't know that she was dating Luz but I'm getting off topic when we finally know the real reason WHY Alador follows Odalia thanks to Clouds on the Horizon.
Odalia threatened Alador with having him be replaced and force their own children to be part of the family business when he had come to the realization that something wasn't right especially when it concerned the Day of Unity and to make matter worse she fired their staff an had him create more of those monstrosities for the Emperor and he never even had a weekend off in 5 YEARS. He was in an abusive relationship but Odalia was the abuser who forced not only him but also their kids to fall in line expecting things to go HER way and expected nothing but results an perfection heck this woman tried to kill Luz with their death machines and didn't bat an eye! Luckily thanks to King, Alador stood up to Odalia and shut down production in Blight Industries and decided to be a better parent an support his kids something that he hasn't done in years!

    1. Is there more than 1 female character?
    2. Do two of them talk to each other?
    3. Do they talk about anything other than a guy?
Also, Willow and Amity do talk about something other than Luz in ep 18. About how Amity wants to protect willow and Willow can protect herself.

Honestly he is a neglectful parent in a sense I'm somewhat familiar with.
As a person he's good. As a parent, he's not the worse (not saying hes the best either) since at least he's will to admit his mistakes and try.
He kinda reminds me of my dad though my dads more in my life than Alador is for amity and co. My mom took over everything in the family and what she says goes. Says she is the only person keeping the house running and we should thank only her, while in reality I always knew at a young age it was a teach effort where most of the role went to my dad.
My dad let's her walk all over him and tells me to go along with it to make things easier. Problem is I inherited his stubbornness and know my worth. Without her around even just for an hour or a day, the real him seeps through which is why I still respect him and see him as my dad. He's happier and not as exhausted looking. Every one of his friends who are still around have nothing but good things to say about him and theres evidence for it in his actions. Even my fiance can vouch for him since they work the same job together (my dad gave him a job early in me and my fiances relationship) and he's the type of point things out as it is bluntly.
My mom has done and mainly said done stuff I can never forgive but while I do wish my dad stood up to her by now (and at least for my sake, not take her side all the time when shes clearly in the wrong), at least he's trying to be a dad for making sure I'm safe and well, approving of my fiance, and the times we do have together without her around, he tries to make worth while. Even those ar every few due to him working or managing my moms craziness.
He's a prideful and stubborn man in some regards but lately he's been opening up to me as I've been opening up to him with how things have been. When my moms not around of course. He wears his heart on his sleeve regardless of the front he puts up. He's just a giant teddy bear and I honestly hope he finds someone better for him since it's been heavily hinted by him that when I leave the house and go out on my own, he's gonna try to get a divorce. Whatever happens, I've made clear to him that as long as he's not doing anything stupid (as in getting involved in drugs, a cult or murder) I'll always have his back.
Most of my morals come from him and I know the habits I never want to incorporate like being beat down by someone who's clearly a insecure narcissist (my mom). I think the main reason why I'm the kind of person I am is because of him and other people in my life, regardless of how much my mom wanted me to become the perfect version of her.
Idk I might be bias but just stating how this reminds me of my situation (though leaving out a lot of details due to privacy and the sake of my fingers typing this). It's a bit off topic as well but eh might as well put it out there.
It kinda proves the progress I've made over the years to actually talk about it (also not being like most people who try to make themselves a victim and obsess over it) and kinda understand the situation in a somewhat mature lense.
The owl house is honestly a show that I never expected these sort of issues being acknowledged. Especially the panic attacks hunter and Gus were having in Labyrinth Runners. As someone who has experienced them, it's nice to know the show might expose people to that sort of knowledge and how to possibly deal with them.
Media is or should be a good balance of knowledge and entertainment. Never one over the other since too much of one can make the audience uninterested or belittled.
Alador has a LOT of work to do but it's nice to see him try. Most of those type of parents even if they want to never go that far without something horrible happening first. Unfortunately sometimes it's at the expense of the kids.

I have seen the new ep but here are some thoughts I had prior because my opinions of Alador did not change. They were actually validated.
RE Escaping Expulsion: The part where Alador tells Odalia that "Blights uphold their part of the bargin" and "Amity is getting stronger" comes off more as pacifying her to keep her from doing anything rash. The way he quickly shifts his personality tells me he was trying to either protect Amity and her friends OR that he knows what to look for in a potential outburst from Odalia.

It’s why Sheryl Goodspeed is not only my least favorite Final Space character but my least favorite aspect of the entire show. I like how this episode calls out Alador for what he did (or more like what he didn’t do) and he actually began to make efforts to improve. Like Amity said it’s not enough yet but it’s a start. With tomorrow’s episode supposedly featuring the blight parents again hopefully we could see him keep his word.

I still think Alador has a lot of work to do, and there’s no excuse to how complicit he was towards the abuse & manipulation Odalia put her children through. But it seems like he was also manipulated to an extent and very passive, after watching how Odalia interacts with him & says “that’s why I never tell you anything” or threatens to have the children start working for the company if he doesn’t listen to her. I’m really happy he finally woke up in this latest episode though. I also like that they kept Odalia as a stuck up lil bitch, just makes their character feel more real? Sometimes people are just shitty and stubborn and no matter how much you make them see, they will never change.

They are also probably the last of the generation that saw devorce as the last option and the mom seems like the kind of woman who if alador wasn't tactical with his intervention she'd take the kids, the company, his magic (somehow) and then without his subtle influence she'd make the kids lives even worse...it's one of those necessary evils. While I definitely agree that Alador still has *a lot* of work ahead of him if he truly wants redemption, I do have a theory that could potentially explain his behavior in the flashback seen in “Understanding Willow”.
Bear in mind that the flashback is shown through one of Amity’s memories, and memories can easily shift as time goes on to the point that the memory of a certain event will not even be close to what actually happened. With this in mind, I think it’s very likely that the reason for why Alador is shown being just as controlling as Odalia when they’re forcing the breakup is that it’s how Amity *views* him as now because of her feeling like Alador is just as controlling as Odalia, even though he most likely didn’t really have much of a say at all and just went along with it in reality, based on what we’ve learned about his character.
Again, he’s not blameless, but I feel like with Amity being warped into the mindset that both parents have dominance that this mindset could’ve just poisoned past memories via the Mandela Effect.

I have a feeling that Odalia probably enabled Alador's neglect though probably not intentionally, throgh stuff like probably telling Edric, Emera and Amity not to bother Alador while he's working and with Blight Industries pretty much having Alador do most of the work making abominations and abomination based tools with Odalia networking/managing the business Alador would likely be bogged down with working often likely taking up any free time he could spend with Edric, Emera and Amity plus his somewhat distractible personality likely made him unaware of how this effected his kids which is not an excuse but unlike Odalia who doesn't care what her family thinks if she's decided otherwise Alador does seem to want to patch things up and accept and fix his mistakes.

I like how they're really making a redeeming arc for him. Now I wonder what was the "deal" he had with his wife involving Blight industries that he made with her to protect them. So this makes me think he must've been trying to protect them from a worser evil that his wife wanted to do with them. Then how he protected and supported Amity in the most recent episode. He's beginning to break free, realizing that he needs to get his kids away from their abusive mother instead of trying to keep the family together. Some people DO have the idea that keeping the family together instead of divorcing is better for the child but it's not. He's not faultless but maybe he also didn't know what he was doing as a parent since yea parenting can be confusing. You don't always know what's best for your kids.
The human world version of this: It's like sending your kids to the best boarding school with super strict rules and keeping high expectations on them to become a senator, a doctor, or a judge and constantly pushing hard on it when your kids want to become artists, zoo keepers, and small town pediatricians. They think it's right for them because they'll be rich and successful but then ignore their emotions.
