- Third time is a charm! This video finally uploaded without errors!
I am touching on Dr. Chenoweth's 3.5% rule here, but I want to expand on it further in an upcoming video. I think there's a LOT more here when it comes to People Care and Fair Share and creating just and sustainable societies.

One of the wonderful things that has come out of the aftermath of Hurricane Helene is the community that has formed around that disaster. I live about 4 hours away, but have many friends who have talked about the power of community. Reach out to your neighbors, bake cookies and deliver them to people on your street, host a potluck outside as weather permits. My son is doing lots of relief work in the affected area. He says, and I agree, "I don't ask or care who someone voted for. These people are hurting and and I here to help." I think building community should be about establishing relationships now, because we are likely to all need one another shortly."
Honestly, I take the 3.5% statistic as reassurance that I DON’T have to create community with folks who have actively chosen harm. Focusing on my community of folks who value human rights is enough to make a difference. And if you’re a person with marginalized identities in a place where you can’t find that 3.5% in person, I think it’s okay to lean into that community online while making plans on how to eventually move. We deserve to live in community with folks who support our basic human rights
We need to figure this out and stick together. Things may get rough, but we can keep control! It's what they want. The underground railroad was a successful adventure. Maybe banding together, we can accomplish saving our precious democracy!❤Hope over fear!
Presently I’m focused on 3 things: hosting holiday parties and get-togethers with friends and allies we always seem to put off in the past; planting, planting, and PLANTING more fruit trees, more perennials, more nut trees, more medicinals for friends, family and others to use to beg, barter, or steal in the future for things we may need; and lastly, reading a book called “We Refuse: A Forceful History of Black Resistance” by Kellie Carter Jackson.
Thank you, Parkrose Permaculture for uploading this to UA-cam. I found it very uplifting.
Thank you for continuing to post. Your content is a beacon in a dark storm. Thank you so much.
I am disconnected from most of my neighbors, only know a few names and occasionally say hi in passing. Even though I've lived in the same house my whole life with the exception of college. It's hard to start the process, I'm not even sure what steps to take. I don't feel it would be well received to knock on doors for the most part. I have been making the effort to show up to local events more often, and this has led me to a few new connections/potential friendships, though not with immediate neighbors.
I’ve been doing things rather than just going up to a door…
I shoveled my neighbors driveway
On walks with my dogs I pick up trash
It makes me feel good
May I suggest just starting with a friendly wave, and if you're physically close enough, a quick *Hi, how are you?", and then if they talk to you give them your full attention and really listen to their answers. Doing something like a neighborhood watch can give you a good reason to knock on doors once you've worked up to that. I got acquainted with some of my neighbors by arranging to be outside at times they'd be likely to be outside too. I liked the other person's thoughts about being of service. Being willing to help out if someone has a flat tire or their car won't start, and you have one of the little machines that inflates tires, as well as jump starts vehicles can go a long way towards making a connection. Supporting a local kids project can definitely make you some positive connections. There are lots of possibilities for making further connections once you've broken the ice.
The age old question 'How do you process the end of the world when the sun comes up anyways' .
Thank you for this… cultivating trustworthy, discrete communities of care with real people, is where I am focusing all of my attention right now. I’m also severely curating my social media intake, limiting my intake and interactions to those creators whose ideals are in line with my community cultivating efforts, to preserve my mind, my integrity and my moral compass. I appreciate your content more than I can say. Please keep posting. Thank you.
When you get a phone that is ONLY used for your biz you can write it off. At least you can now. No telling what laws will change.
TY for the reminder. I really need a new phone. This one barely supports the UA-cam studio app
Watching from Los Angeles area. Please continue with this train of thought. I'm also working on building communities in my area and with the political friends I've worked with the past 8 years. I still don't see how this process protects us. Cooking turkeys for shelters for the unhoused is a good thing but it doesn't protect us from what might be coming next year from the government that was voted in. I look forward to hearing more from you. Thanks.
Do you know about Ron Finley? He does urban guerrilla farming in LA.
My two favorite videos on how to build community with your neighbors comes from TEDx:
1. "Take a street and build a community: Shani Graham at TEDxPerth"
2. "Resilience in turbulent times? The answer is community. | Shani Graham | TEDxPerth"
Both videos are presented by the same woman, but 10 years apart.
Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely look for those videos.
Thanks for uploading this. I will take more than just the local community to get through this. One of my friends has sold every thing and is moving out of the country. Feli from Germany did a video about the White Rose Leaflets for 1942 Germany that seems to apply today. They have been translated to English and with very little modification could be sent out again.
That woven shawl is STUNNING.
Ikr? I'd love one of those, but I'm not a knitter. One of my sisters once tried to teach me, but she gave up after about 5 minutes. 🥴
@@greeneyedlady5580, this is actually woven--and I'm pretty sure it's hand-woven--on a loom. I've never woven anything, but I do knit, and knitting looks quite different.
@@amyhull754 Interesting!
I'm so happy to have 'met' you today! I wish you were in my circles of friends! ❤ Greetings from Finland.
I want to reach out to at least some of my neighbors. Being an introvert definitely makes it more challenging. Wish me luck.
I wish you luck, but you really won't need it. Just be willing to make the first, and second, and third moved with people. Start with friendly waves, and then "Hi, how are you", or "What do you think about this weather?" and actually listen to their responses. If you show that you're actually interested in what other people think, a great man's people are happy to talk about themselves one on one.
How to beat darkness
Light
Hate?
Love
Loneliness?
Connecting
Loving our enemies
Turning the other cheek
If we want to see change on these issues, we must not forget that
Be brave
Community is imperative for us
Take care! I'm just sad. Keep your chin up!
Good luck , just looking at the weather coming at you all, you're going to need community. Try to stay safe.
I recommend reading the work of Gene Sharp who has written and worked extensively with non violent resistance groups.
I strongly believe in community will be central for the years ahead. I now live on property outside a small town in Oregon. We have three neighbors. All of us have chickens so the price of feed, not eggs is the issue. I don't know how they voted and don't want to know because these relationships are important. We are new here and don't know how to find and build community with people who share our values.
I'd suggest that you look places where people like us hang out, like libraries, book stores, community gardens, food banks not associated with churches, book clubs, extension service classes on organic gardening, certain community college classes, like science classes, etc. I personally wouldn't be looking for community in Evangelical, Catholic, or Muslim churches, because they're not likely to support women's reproductive rights and other women's rights.
I live in CT and it's Trump country. I want to love my neighbors. Ignore the issues that separate us and move on? It's difficult to let it go and get happy.
There’s probably others in your area who are more In alignment with you. Maybe curate your social circle to make room for them?
I think your pre-tarrif phone idea is great
I can communicate even through disagreements and I understand everyone is different and then there are some issues significant enough to make communication nearly impossible but in times of such distress and instability, insecurity impacting all humans alike I think trying to build common bridges is the only way. We can focus on baseline principles and tasks that we want to form a community about- like growing and exchange of food, affordable housing (eco village communities), green initiatives, financial literacy, skill sharing, music, art, dance focused on emotional intelligence that are critical for a healthy environment. A community that provides its members a sense of belonging and support in times of need.
Heard a couplet/poem today that states something like this (translation):
We fear darkness, loneliness, failure
Never did I envision that there would be a day we would fear communication as well!
There is a saying "keep your friends close and your enemies closer". Perhaps we should not confuse civil behavior with acquiescence...Yes we do need community thank you.
It's awesome to hear you mention Erica Chenoweth's work in the context of permaculture. So very apt for this time we are in. Thank you! (And, P.S., just found you on Bluesky!)
💙💙💙
We need community but we also need our own version of the "Federalist society" to pack the courts with normal people.
The right wing has so much that the left has no equivalent for. We have no string of radio stations to match the right's hate radio stations. We have no equivalent to the right wing's Sinclair TV. The centrist to center left cable news networks are bleeding viewers and ratings, while Fox is still doing well and making massive amounts of money. One of the things the right has done well is to plan out there things decades in advance, and then methodically put them in place. Where the actual left can keep making inroads is in new media. We need to start organizing left wing cooperatives that provide actual benefits to people.
Things are all falling apart as I am struggling with my health. It sucks. I am mostly unable to be the person I expect myself to be: a helper, a giver, someone who offers to help out. I suck at asking for what I need anyway and now I still have some folks needing stuff from me that I can't help. :(
Rule number one of being a helper is they you have to take care of yourself first. It sounds to me like your health is requiring you to tell some people that you're sorry, but you just can't help them because you're struggling and need to make room in your life for taking care of yourself, otherwise you may wear yourself down to the point where you need a full time caretaker.
Any time you build a community it's important to consider the impact of each member. Not everyone will fit in the same community. For example, a book burner wouldn't fit well into a banned books reading group. Someone who is terrified of dogs wouldn't fit well in an animal shelter volunteer group. Sometimes those of us who are never trumpers try too hard to include anyone and everyone when it's probably best for all involved if we let them find their own tribes. It doesn't mean we can't be civil, it just means that there are some people that are welcome into our homes for a meal and movie night, and some people that we'll chat with for a few minutes at a neighborhood grillout. Anyway, thanks for your videos; I appreciate the work you put into them 😊
I wonder if you hop in to a library WiFi connection if your uploads would work. Libraries have a greater bandwidth and it could be the size of the files need greater bandwidth.
Thanks!
Thank you for keeping me sane right now. I need to stay sane to help hold the line for humanity alongside everyone else doing the same. Your words have really helped me and I thank you, thank you, thank you for your kind heart, your well reasoned contemplation and reflection of the world and for being so brave to share yourself with the world. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Here’s some books I highly recommend; One Straw Revolution, Braiding Sweetgrass, and Tending the Wild. The last two are about Indigenous land stewardship, which has been around for 20,000+ years.
When European colonizers invaded they saw the Indigenous stewarded abundance and assumed it was “virgin land” then proceeded to steal and exploit it.
The land remembers.
Maybe folks can start food sovereignty book clubs where they’re at? Just knowing you can eat is such a huge relief. I think that’ll be a big part of how we fare in the next few years.
I'm giving the young adult version of "Braiding Sweet grass" to my oldest (half Native) granddaughter, but I haven't started reading my adult version yet. I also bought her other book about mosses. I'll check out those other books.
You might find "The Critical Mass in Collective Action" by Gerald Marwell and Pamela Oliver interesting. It's an academic book, and while it predates social media, it contains some interesting findings and observations about how collective action gets started. Your 3.5% comment made me think of it.
speaking of community in Portland, do you still host community events? I live in the area and am trying to build those connections as quickly as I can. I own a little bit of land up on the Olympic peninsula and am interested in providing food and shelter to those who will soon be in need. Also, I've got a Nokia G22 phone I'd be happy to give you; I bought it without realizing it doesn't work on American networks--but if it's connected to wifi, it should be able to upload your videos.
I don't think connecting is that difficult if we start by first respecting all people and the planet and realizing that the vast majority of people have the same values of seeking healthy family, community and environmental connections. Strengthening families and communities is valuable because it fosters a foundation for healthy child development, reduces social issues like crime and substance abuse, provides a support network during challenging times, and ultimately contributes to a more resilient and thriving society by creating a sense of belonging and shared responsibility across generations.
really missing you gardening and teaching use how you are becoming more sustainable and building community with food
Everything I talk about on this channel is Permaculture. I talk plenty about gardening. I've had two videos in the last three weeks on that subject.
You have aptly expressed how this dystopian cloud is an awful challenge and that fog creeps in to life every day!
I have found that I'm bonding even more with lady friends as we share our concern, anger and despair. The 3.5% is inspiring and we can have vitrual visits. What is the source for that figure? I'm curious to see how that is measured. Thank you and your hopeful angst is inspiring.
Hey fellow permie!
I really appreciate your takes on things! Would offering audio-only of your videos on Patreon be an easy option for you?
I had not thought about that. Thank you for giving me something to consider. I know my daughters and I keep talking about wanting to do a podcast or we cover some of these issues because honestly, they are so much more informed and insightful than I am.
And it takes 5% to gain access to the presidential election campaign fund. To those who considered voting for the Green Party a waste. This would actually be a powerful way to put pressure on Dems from the progressive left because one thing venal politicians care about, and respond to, more than wealthy donors is winning. Winning becomes hard with a viable third party.
Jill Stein is a Russian asset who comes out once every 4 yrs to make $$$$. She's not a viable third party candidate. The international Green Party renounced her and encouraged folks not to vote for her. The Green Party got less of the vote this election than any of the last 4.
If you want a viable third-party, start at local elections. It's nonsensical to think that the place to start is at the top with a presidential election. Also support viable parties like the Working Families Party. Support ranked-choice voting. Be strategic.
Hmm. Wikipedia and the GP website both have lists of local races of GP candidates.
Jill Stein also doesn't equal the GP, but she was investigated by the Senate for her visit to Russia - and was cleared. I believe there are even multiple fact-check articles about it. Your comment is basically Hillary Clinton propaganda ("I think she's a Russian asset") that has done the rounds and most recently landed with AOC repeating it (while trashing the GP - one of whose campaign managers ran AOC's initial campaign for Congress btw) on the way to Dems losing this election.
Imagine if in 2016 Bernie continued his campaign on the Green ticket or threatened he would (he was offered the ticket by Jill Stein and has been offered since at least 2011).
Trump in 2016 threatened to go independent and take his followers with him and *just the threat* moved the entire GOP towards Tea Party/MAGA and the rest is history.
Bernie was similar to Trump from the left, but he never replied to Stein or the GP - no threat, nothing from "the Bern". Instead, he endorsed Hillary and ignored his followers - and Hillary lost. Dems have been treading water since (Biden eked by in 2020).
@@ParkrosePermaculture Thank you! You said that much better than I could have. Without Jill Stein we would have had President Hillary Clinton, and might have totally avoided the Trump fiasco. We lost one of our Senate seats this election because over 100,000 Kamala voters decided to vote for a third party Senate candidate. 3rd party candidates just aren't viable in a national election, and even if they were, they'd have so much opposition that they wouldn't be able to get anything done, including appointing judges.
All that would actually accomplish is splitting the Democratic vote, and electing Republicans. It doesn't actually send any message to the Democratic party because nobody knows why you're voting 3rd party, and they don't know who among their voters is actually "far left". Even AOC had a lot of reelection votes in 2024 from voters who also chose Trump.
@@greeneyedlady5580They have a platform, and even if you never read it, they are a progressive party to the left of Dems, so it's very obvious why someone would vote Green.
This is like saying we don't know why people voted GOP. We don't know what the GOP stands for?
As for the spoiler effect, it can be strategic. Anyone doubting this should look into the history of the GOP and Dems use the spoiler effect against each other *strategically*. But it's when voters do it that they're just "wasting" their vote or supporting their least favorite party. It's been a useful narrative to maintain the duopoly, and it's a reason change will come very slowly - perhaps not at all since we're facing deadly heatwaves and famines (COP29 has been a failure and 1.5C is "dead as a doornail", per the climate scientists).
Communities seem to thrive when they need each other, in a way one has to be forced to reach out. People here lived cheek by jowl until the supermarket came on scene, television also sucked people out of the public houses and the bingo hall etc.
Thank you for fighting the good fight!❤
You mention you have joined bluesky, curious if your on mastodon as well ?
I am not! And somebody told me I need to get on threads, but I'm not sure how many more social media platforms I can juggle
@@ParkrosePermaculture yeah it all gets a bit much so many networks and so much fragmentation.
Same questions we all have! The trumpers have changed me in the last 9 long years from being an extrovert to being introvert and I’m bitter about it. My wife and I never go out to typical social events therefore, we don’t meet new people in this red state. It’s to the point if I meet anyone new I want to state I hate MAGA during the hand shake. There needs to be a dating (type) site for people just looking for politically like minded people just for friends. Thanks for posting!
How much does tiktok pay?
Hillary said it years ago! ❤ It takes a village, which is community. We need one another, but what we don't need is an oligarichial authoritarian theocracy designed to control the village or community. For those of you unfamiliar with George Orwell, I encourage you to read 1984, then Animal Farm. For those of you who have read these intuitive works, would love to hear your commentary.
Finally, Angela, just found your content tonight in the FAFO tic too, then to your UA-cam channel. Omg, such similarities if thought. Thank you for being young enough and out there creating this content!❤😚🫶💥💯
Angela, I'm into organizing. I'm in Los Angeles. Your correct. We are the White knighrs for ourselves. Let's do this!
By the way, the act of shunning is a relatively great tool! For all of our life interactions! Again, let's do this, all together, as a community force, building impenetrable community after community.
