I did a book report in high school on the Hunter Thompson book "Hell's Angels: A Strange and Terrible Saga". It was a great read and was written by Thompson, a "gonzo" journalist who rode with them for over a year, with the club members knowing he was only a writer and was gathering information for a book. I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to know about these outlaws from a mid-60's perspective, about when these pictures were taken.

      From u.k.
I’m 67 now, and was lent Hells angels the Thompson Book
by my pals older brother, when I was in my early teens.
That first page still blows me away!
      Fantastic piece of writing.
Book changed my life, opened me up to the counter culture on different levels!
Seeing the photos of the day, makes it even better!
Something about the 60s and 70s, bikes, cars, and general atmosphere
      portrayed in the photos.
I prefer photos to film, just saying.
      Take care.

I read that book when I was 10. Actually a pretty good book, though originally I got it because there was a picture of a motorcycle on the cover 😂

Ya' gotta read 'Freewheelin' Frank' by Frank Reynolds. Copies are damned expensive though. Like a dumb ass I gave mine away.

I have read it, couldn’t find it anywhere!
Pre net days of course, they had a reprint in the 80s
      Wasn’t cheap then!
Back in the day, even now I never, ever, lend books you value!
      Or albums, or cds.
      Get them back scratches guaranteed!
I threw out a book It was a Charles Manson biog called
THE FAMILY by ED SANDERS first edition 1971.
That was mid 80s. Valuable apparently!
You live and learn, a pal of mine, his older brother had
A large format, large print, first edition, black leather bound.
Silver embossed cover of Thompson’s Hells angels.
Don’t see him much but when I do he says.
NO! I DO NOT KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT BOOK!
Vanished of his brothers shelf mid 70s!
It kills me thinking about it!
Thanks for the recommendation it was a good one!
Lots of biker stuff now, have to be selective.
Got one off amazon a few months back havnt
started it yet, you know what it’s like!
It called THE ORIGINAL WILD ONES by Bill Hayes.
      Take care.

@@madcyril4135 Yep. Always kick myself for dumb moves. I saw Freewheelin' Frank' at ABEBOOKS. Cheapest copy was around $50. I remember getting my copy in San Francisco for $10 with a dust jacket. I got Eric Burdon's book 'I Used To Be An Animal' for $2 on EBAY. Got lucky there. He talks about the the Angels at the Fillmore in SF. I also have a first edition of 'Guadalcanal Diary' by Richard Tregaskis. One of my fave WW2 books.

In the 1960's and early 1970's, the various west coast chapters of the Hells Angels would have a Labor Day weekend, yearly run through our home town of Ukiah, Mendocino County California. Which is about 120 miles north of San Francisco on U.S. Highway 101. There was usually 300 to 400 members of the Hells Angles as they would essentially parade through downtown. Many of them would stop off at local bars in the area. Most of the bars would have to close early because they would run out of booze. They had campsites located on the east shore of nearby Lake Mendocino. Sonny Barger, president of the Oakland Chapter, owned a 150 acre ranch west of Ukiah on Boonville Road. The H.A.'s murdered 3 people in the San Francisco Bay Area and buried their bodies on the ranch property. The bodies were stuffed in 55 gallon barrels and covered with lye.

Grande postagem! Uma pergunta, essas são as fotos do fotógrafo da Life que ficaram guardadas por quase 40 anos? E que alguns anos atrás foram lançadas em um livro? Sucesso e abraços from south of Brasil. Outra quem canta essa sonzeira!?

Great photos. As a fellow that worked in a restaurant many, many years ago there was a guy that had a couple of cycles just like in these pictures he was actually a hard working man and cool nothing like the Hollywood Liberal view of a white guy on a motorcycle

Terrible music, doesn't fit the pictures, something from 1965/66 like The Byrds or Buffalo Springfield would have brought the images to life more.

too many shovelheads to be all 1965 pictures. there may have been some 1966 models in late 1965 but much more pans and perhaps the odd knuckle or flat. surprised me how many british bikes there were.
