    The Guadacanal 1st Marine Division diamond patch, is older than any MC.
    It was 1st given to soldiers, who fought in the Battle of Guadalcanal during Operation Watchtower in 1942.

      A first MarDiv patch is still very different from a 1% patch. No MC would press you over an earned military patch. Don't let civs scare you out of repping anything you've earned. Even if a club presses you, just explain what it is, and 99.9% of the time you're good.

    Just an FYI, the reason leather vests became popular riding gear was simply because a tight leather vest will keep your shirt from flapping in the wind, and will keep stuff in your shirt pocket when riding. It predates mc’s by quite a while. That being said, I’ve worn the same plain black vest since the mid 90’s and the only people who ever gave me crap were wearing Sons of Anarchy store bought gear. They weren’t as much of a problem as they thought they were.

      @@DemonsRow I wasn’t trying to contradict you. Just saying that I have worn one for a long time with no real problems. Back in the day, wearing a slick back meant you didn’t want to join a club. But, if you took it off when you stopped and slung it over your shoulder or arm, that meant you were looking for a club to prospect for. Times and traditions change though. I wear one because I live in the south where it is hot. A jacket is too much, but I need something to keep my cigs in my shirt pocket, so vest it is.

    I wear a lot of patches. I get a lot of questions about my Command Pilot Wings, the two stars on my shoulders, my "Strike Eagle", "Mudhen", and "CAS-500 Club" patches. A lot of unit patches on my jacket as well. I love explaining that I am a retired USAF Major General, I flew the F-15E Strike Eagle and flew over 500 Close Air Support missions and that the unit patches are where I am an 'honorary member' of these units for literally saving their asses in Iraq and Afghanistan. A lot of veterans in MC's and once the conversation starts, I have never paid for a drink in any club bar. I ride a Gold Wing, not a 'real' scooter and I ride with other retirees who are like me, retired fighter pilots. We ALL wear very similar patches. No fights ever started, a great deal of respect was traded, and a lot of stories were told by both sides. It's not all bad. These guys can spot a fake from a mile away because they've lived this life ALL their lives. Their clubs are very welcoming as long as you're 'real'.

He was Army and never got any fancy patch. He said his unit ran out of ammunition and scrounged on their bellies from their fallen dead brothers for ammo. Although I am a direct descendant, out of the feeling that I have never endured something such as that, I don't feel that I should ever wear his patches. Not sure how to honor his work and valor. @@DemonsRow Does it matter? As a military veteran myself, I would never let someone wear a CIB patch for example if they never served, were never infantry and never went to combat. They didn't earn that patch like I did. If someone from a 1% MC wanted to take a patch off my vest or jacket, claiming I didn't "earn it" and they didn't care that it is a patch I DID earn in the military, then it's a self defeating argument. If they see no reason to respect someone claiming the right to wear a patch they earned through military service then there's no reason for anyone to respect anyone's claim to wear any patch at all. If a 1%er doesn't respect a military patch worn by a military member they aren't disrespecting just that person and their patch but they are disrespecting the whole idea that patches should be earned at all, including their own patches.

    • @jackmason9550
      @jackmason9550 2 роки тому +14

      @@victorwest8041 You're barking up the wrong tree brother. I don't advertise my being a military veteran to the public. I don't even have veteran plates or the veteran background for my driver's license. I hang my blue cord from the rear view mirror in my truck which very few people even know what it is and I have a very small CIB patch on my hat that can be and usually is covered up by the hood of my sweatshirt. Most people probably wouldn't recognize the CIB patch as military anyway or have any idea what it is or what it means and beyond that, nothing marks me out as a veteran and that's the way I prefer it.
      The point is though, that whether they are MEANT for display on civilian clothing or not, there is a VERY long history of soldiers using their old unit patches to decorate clothing, jackets, backpacks and other things of that nature. There is ALSO a tradition just as long among veterans that to possess one of these patches, one should have served with the appropriate unit or earned the proper badge or corresponding medal. If you served, you know as well as I do that veterans have never looked very kindly on civilians pretending they were combat veterans or pretending they had won bronze stars, silver stars, purple hearts, the medal of honor, etc. Likewise, (and this may not be true for every unit I suppose) veterans have never been very fond of people who claim to have served with a unit they never actually served with. Some units are particularly prestigious as well, with consideration to the history of the unit and things they have accomplished in various campaigns throughout history. Some are famous and well known even by civilians, such as the Big Red 1, the 101st or 82nd Airborne. Many who served in these units take it as a personal offense even if fellow soldiers claim to have served in these units if they didn't really.
      For example, I served with 1/6 Mechanized Infantry out of Baumholder, Germany. For starters, anyone who actually served there knows the base as "The Rock" and would easily be able to describe some particular features that made "The Rock" unique. Now, my unit was already a highly decorated unit when I came to it. They had received Presidential Unit Citations among other recognitions and we were expected to learn the unit history when we arrived. We also earned awards from training with the German Army. Finally, it was my unit that spearheaded the BCT that secured Sadr City and built the Sadr City Wall, a noteworthy objective for OEF. Several units had come to Sadr City before us and tried to secure that city and failed and we succeeded. They did a 60 Minutes special on our BCT. We took a lot of sniper fire building that wall and we took a lot of rocket attacks, mortars, etc and plenty of IED strikes.
      One of my best buddies survived an IED strike but was never the same after. I would take offense to anyone who claimed to have been in Sadr City during that time and went through what 1/6 Mechanized went through if they weren't really there. We own that and it means something to us.
      Likewise, I know some guys that were in Fallujah and saw some particularly nasty combat there and I wouldn't dream of trying to claim that I ever stepped foot in Fallujah during those years. That's not my story to tell and those are hard won battles I can't claim credit for. That matters too.
      Those stories, those claims is what those patches represent and just because you no longer wear the uniform doesn't make them any less yours, but if you can't even have pride in the fact that you earned a CIB by having a CIB patch on your hat (since it's not meant for display on civilian clothing) then civilians who never served at all don't have excuse #1 and if you can't claim right to your own history, your own accomplishments, your own brothers with whom you served, then what pride is there in the uniform at all? What reason is there to respect such things at all?
      I don't wear one but if I did decide to put a 1/6 Mechanized patch on my jacket or whatever, nobody is going to tell me I can't have it or I can't wear it. I fought and bled for 1/6 Mechanized. My friends were blown up fighting for 1/6 Mechanized. If that patch belongs to anyone it belongs to the men who wore it in combat, fighting and dying for each other, whether it's on a uniform or not. Period.
      Now, if you want to keep the patches for whatever Rear-D or supply unit you belonged to shut up in your closet, that's your choice but I guess infantrymen take a little more pride in these things.

Stopped for gas in one of the dusty little burgs along the way and a guy wearing a cut I didn't recognize came out to check my vest. Saw what I had on my vest , nodded ,said cool. In my opinion, as you hang more and more in the community, its better to show the respect by asking them. I have a Cross and a top rocker that has a clearly written CHAPLAIN across it with no bottom rocker or territory, this is good etiquette and should have no problem but show the RESPECT by having them approve it. That Guadalcanal is a Marine sign, I could see why some clubs would be a bit mistaken. But even in the military, wearing unit patches that you never been in is a no go neither. I’ve had my Guadalcanal 1/1 patch (that’s a form of diamond) but I’ve never been called out on it or mistaken with a 1%.

    In my younger days I put a 3-piece on my back which was the upper rocker saying "Live to Ride", a large Mardi Gras skull in the middle, and a bottom rocker that said "Ride to Live", and a bunch of random patches all over. Was never in a club, used to ride with HOG but that was boring so now I just ride with friends or solo. Never had an issue with my vest, and was around a LOT of MC members. Had someone ask me once if I was worried about an MC taking my vest because of the 3-piece, I said no. Back in those days I would leave my house every day looking for a fight so it was all good 😂. Now that I'm older and wiser (maybe not wiser, definitely older), I haven't worn my vest in years. Now I just wear a leather jacket to absorb the road rocks kicked up by cars in front of me.
    I think that age has a lot to do with putting the wrong patches on. Young kids see SOA and Mayans MC and wanna be cool without knowing the risks. Older heads have seen more stuff in life and know better.
    Just my 2 cents, keep up the great videos. Videos like this can literally save lives 😉

    Yet again my brotha, another fire video dropping knowledge to all the new people getting into motorcycles. My opinion, if your not affiliated or in a “diamond” group, then don’t wear anything diamond related. If your not in an mc or any other group, just a normal everyday civilian that likes to ride, don’t put any patches or any colors on that would draw attention to any club wether it be a 99 or a dominate. It gets confusing to all the newbies i know but do research and be respectful if you get pulled up on. I myself bought a Heathen nation shirt, not like the one you shown, it had Heathen at the top and nation on the bottom and in the middle it has the left facing skull similar to ha but it has an Indian headdress on, after i bought it i was like nah, better not rock this while riding, people may get the misconception and kick some stuff off lol. Keep up the great work my brotha. Much love and respect.

    The Crest is a family Crest or a coat of arms. It is family crest from medieval times. I have that tatoo on my arm of ours. Idk if people would want to wear that as patch.

    • @No_Fuse8771
      @No_Fuse8771 3 роки тому +2

      In Scotland it reps a family, many names can be under that crest. By Scottish law, you can not ware it or have a tat of it with out the clan leaders signed permission. In the USA is ok, no law against it. But as you said, if that's not your family crest why would you wear it. As for the rest of the patches, if you don't know, it's a no-go. That last part is for others reading this reply.

    Rode from '01 until a non-bike related accident left me with a few screws in my spine in 2012. When I was a 16, I asked a rider how to go about patches. He told me if I don't want to be a clubmember, then avoid rockers, bars, and diamonds on your jacket completely. His words exactly, "If anything take a hint from the riding granny at the rally with the same Triumph she bought new in the 60's. Rally's you've been to, Ride's you've been on with charity ones especially, or even roads you've travelled like the CA 1, US 101, or Route 66. You get a lot more respect from riders that way than trying to look like a tough guy."
    Never got around to it, but the one I most wanted was the I-10 "coast to coast" patch. I only ever saw it a couple times.

    I have to ask and mean no disrespect but why wouldn’t an official military diamond patch get a pass everywhere. Most outlaw mc’s were founded by Vets for Vets. If a military diamond is an issue haven’t the clubs lost their way somewhat. It was earned and should be respected as much as any clubs diamond. Am I wrong?

      If a Vet served and got that patch they dont need any permission especially if they served in a war. They actually earned it, they fought for it, They served so MCs can have that freedom to ride.

      It’s very unlikely that patch will cause problems, he’s just saying it could because it’s a possibility, especially when alcohol and ignorance plays a role.

    The 0% diamond patch is a problem anywhere because of the diamond, if it is a square turned on its side with the 0% in it, that might be acceptable by some 1%'ers, but only if they like you, and you will find this out right after you show them the patch, or belt buckle or shirt that the sideways square with 0% is in, they will laugh and say that is funny and only you can get away with it and dont let that square turn into a diamond unless you start riding in our support club.
