Met Doyle a few years ago when I went to the ORHC, what a great guy. One of my favorite quotes from him was, when asked why he never uses the air horn on 4449 he said “if I wanted to blow an air horn, I would get on a f*cking diesel and run!”
I remember that day!! No idea why that's the question that popped into my head out of the thousands I could’ve asked in the cab, but after hearing that answer I was extremely glad I did LOL
He will use the airhorn rarely.. if people ahead have upset him by getting in too close to the ROW, your likely to get the airhorn.. If you hear the Airhorn, someone done screwed up.
this was the video that got me into trains. I watched it over and over. Mr. McCormick would be one railroad man I would have loved to share lunch with and just talk to him for a few minutes
Fond memories of camping at Carpentaria State Beach Park in the early 1950s. My friend and I would walk up to the tracks to watch the Daylight come through and listen to that steam whistle.
I grew up on the documentary this team so graciously permitted Skyfire Video to make for VHS. It was a cherished childhood memory, and still pleasant to return to now and again. To come back almost 20 years later and hear more about the engineer Doyle is such a wonderful thing! Oh how I would love to go and take a ride on the Daylight as a passenger, just once.
While I haven’t had the privilege of meeting Doyle, I do consider myself incredibly fortunate to have crossed paths with him when the Daylight made its way to Michigan back in 2009
R& LHS member Gunnar Henrioulle met Mr. McCormack via US Mail back in 1974 when we sent the 4449 project a collection of Lima GS drawings, from the Western Pacific (481 class, via Tom Irion). We had previously mentioned using the cab ahead 4294 on the West Coast Freedom Train; Doyle was NOT AT ALL interested... He certainly made the best choice! We visited Oaks Park in Summer 1974, coincidental with the expeditionary inspection on behalf of the Freedom Train. The crew needed chalk to mark the grease cellers, and my daughter Diana supplied a stick of white crayon, saving a trip to a store. We asked for a future cab ride for Diana, have never followed up on that... Icing on the cake is the SP&S Baldwin 4-8-4 and 77" driver Pacific in the fleet!
Doyle McCormick also worked closely with Ross Rowland, Hank Webber and Wes Camp crew of the High Iron Company before he went on his own career running this locomotive
Ok, this was awesome Johnny. Besides being my favorite engine, close to my home and having ridden it, I have never seen this. Totally awesome. Thanks for showing this. Well done.
4449 is my favourite engine so documentaries like this have a special place in my heart, I’m so glad ya liked it and I hope to see 4449 in person some day~!!
@@Audamus well Johnny, should you ever get out this way hit me up and I’ll take you to the museum to see the 4449. My family would enjoy going and meeting you. I assume we will be here for a few more years.
@@Audamus Yes, it was. I am kicking around another short piece for TRAINS, about my son climbing up the ladder into 4449 and his expression. We shall see.
I have one of the original 1940s southern pacific main line spring steel railroad spikes that held the rails down to the ties and they look like a 7 inch long cotter pin those are in the tracks for fast passenger and freight the spike has SP on top

I used to love to take my son down to the Brooklyn Yard roundhouse and shoot the breeze with Doyle and Company, then lunch at the Semaphore, RIP.
That sounds like it must have been so much fun, you must have some great stories from the guys~!
