One really helpful function that I don't think was touched on is the recipe function. This is great for when you're making casseroles or whatever and don't really know how much of each ingredient is going into each serving. You just input the ingredients and the number of servings, and you're all set. It's also great for if you're like me and have a somewhat complicated breakfast (oatmeal with pumpkin, chia seeds, flax, blackstrap molasses, spices, pumpkin seeds, apples) and don't want to add each individual ingredient every day. Great video!

      Mic. the Vegan
Hey brotha love the vid, i've been using chronometer for a while and its pretty useful
I would recommend informing people of the few faults from the website of which they can correct
1- the amino acid requirement on the website is roughly double what the science shows
that as well as the calcium, and other vitamin and mineral recommendations on the website being higher than the science shows you need
the website does give you the opportunity to put your own recommendation amounts
i think it would be a fantastic follow up video to inform people of the faults of the website and how to correct for it so that they aren't as intimidated by the amount of vitamin, mineral, and macro nutrient intake actually required they need to intake

I actually feel like I need to go and search your channel to see if any of these topics have already been covered or I've missed something.
I know you draw on these topics in you videos.
However, a specific look into/overview of the vegan doctors studies and published research. Dr Neal Barnard's fight with shifting universities from animal testing. The law suit PCRM embarked on. The strength of evidence behind the research on saturated fat or any other interesting studies like the 7 day Adventists study. The rice diet. The dietary recommendations for Vegans from the dietary guidelines that state that "a well planned diet is adequate for all stages of life" Maybe Vegan Keto....da da daaaa.
I had a conversation with a parent of a child with sever epilepsy being treated in hospital with a vegan Keto diet as her parents wouldn't have her eat a meat diet. This girl wasn't having the same adverse side effects the meat eating keto children were having.

Mic. the Vegan Great and important video, Mic! I saw another video where a vegan (the calisthenics dude) shows his Cronometer and it's just great to prove to people how suuuper easy it is to get enough protein (and whatnot). I'm not sure if this isn't available on the website or if you didn't mention it, but the cool thing is you can (on my iPad) click say iron and it will list where you got your iron from that day, highest to lowest sources, very handy!

I watched this video in 2022. I'd seen Mic's comments recommending cronometer but I was used to "MyFitnessPal" and when I looked at Cronometer it just overwhelmed me. I get it now. That extra complexity brings on a lot of added functionality which is very handy for me as I start to eat Vegan.
Nearly 5 years later and this video still has a lot of value.

I used this site (cronometer) to help me finally start to lose weight. (Been vegan for 7 years, actually started consistently losing weight when I started using that site). One thing you pointed out is that it helps you to learn about what is in each food item. This is where I learned that 1 simit (the Turkish equivalent of a bagel) cost 300 calories! So I started eating only half of one when I was in the mood for bread. I also was able to take pictures of the "protein" section to show my concerned friends that I was doing quite OK in regards to protein even though I had no animal products in my food.
I'm glad you put this here- I'll refer people to it if they ask me how to use cronometer. Peace from a sunny, breezy, Istanbul afternoon.

I had an eating disorder 3-2 years ago... I was crazy about what I ate because I was always to fat to love myself. I tried to cut a lot of food, and never had the result I wanted. The main part of my time was searching on the internet what could I eat to lost pound. I wasn't really fat, I was 140 pound (I'm 5"5)... anyway. I went vegan at first to lost pounds, and I lost 20 pounds in 6 months! without even trying... I don't know what happen but I discover that veganism was not about myself anymore, it was for the planet and the animals then, slowly, I just stoped being crazy about my freaking fat. I mean, I'm still crazy lol but I stoped strugling!
I used cronometer to help me with my transition, it was so easy :)

Cronometer is great, for sure. What I did, and what I would advise is to use this for the first month to two months of being vegan pretty religiously. This is long enough to really learn and know what you need to eat in a day, and in the early stages it's great to make sure you are eating what you need - and understand what that looks like. You can create your own entries as well, for things like multivitamins or food items that you notice are missing or incomplete.
Another thing that I did was record my meal preps. The site allows you to create recipes under the foods tab, so I added all the ingredients I used for a weekend meal prep into a recipe, and whenever I had that lunch or dinner I would just make my serving .1667 or something to indicate that I had split that prep into 6 portions. I showed this site to a friend and she had a child not long ago. She's raising her kid vegetarian (not vegan) and found the site really helpful for making sure he was getting what he needs now that he's switched to solid foods so that can be a whole new use case for a lot of people out there. Especially if you need to discuss things with the child's doctor, having that record of what you've been feeding them is great.
You can add your friends and share with them too which is pretty cool and especially useful if you made some meal for a potluck and they want to get that tracked or even just see what the ingredients are.
You showed the custom targets which is useful for, let's say, ensuring you get over 50g of fiber per day or 100g if you want to challenge yourself to do that for a while.
The trends tab is also good for just figuring out what your overall diet typically looks like (vs any one specific day)

I use Chronometer and I find it very helpful. It was especially good in the beginning to encourage me to find ways to add calcium and zinc to my diet.
One thing to remember is not all nutrients are included for all foods. As was shown, Iodine is almost never included. I've also noted that sometimes individual amino acids are not included. Sometimes there will be one version of the food that includes more nutrients than another - so you need to do a little checking to see which ones have more nutrients - or you need to do your own research and create your own food adding the missing nutrients.

I love using Cronometer! I have been eating plant based for a month and trying to build muscle. This has helped me make sure I’m getting enough calories and protein. I like that it points out so clearly where your micro nutrients may be lacking. My favorite is the recipe feature. I can enter my food combos that I eat all the time to make it easier. Or if I make a big, from scratch recipe (a soup or chili or something), I can add all the ingredients and make up my own serving sizes for that dish and Cronometer does the math!

Thank you so much for this. I find cronometer extremely helpful because it helps me make sure that I am eating enough calories, and getting my daily recommened amount of vitamins, lipids, proteins, and so on. Last year, I was vegetarian, and I started documenting my daily calorie intake for health class and on average i got around 800 calories. Some days were 500.
This wasnt because of me being vegetarian but because i simply wasnt eating nearly enough, i skipped breakfast most days and lunch, and my diet consisted of fries, yogurt, occasional blended sugar coffee drinks, barely any vegetables, but oh heaven forbid, i at least ate an orange almost everyday. Obviously, i started going to the doctors a lot for odd health complications.. once i was sure i had anemia even, but it turned out i had more iron than i needed. I was always tired and could barely do anything. Recently, i went vegan. Its been about a week now? Although a couple of times i ate something i thought was vegan but turned out not to be, anyway, I've started really keeping track of how much i eat and i put what i ate down yesterday on cronometer and i was lacking a lot in a few areas. But im so excited to see how my moods, energy levels, and other things will change once i start eating enough :)

Another useful video from Mic. If you eat something not on the list, feel free to add it. I eat a lot of vegan supplements that I find in powder form and I put those in as needed. I only found out about cronometer from another video Mic made a while back, he mentioned it so I checked it out, yup that's just what I wanted.

Cronometer helps me so much! It made me aware of deficienties and helps me look up how to fix those.
I looked up requirements in documents from the world health organization (WHO). They have pdf's for vitamins, minerals and essential amino acids on their website.

I love how the ad preceding the video was pushing turkey pot pie, wasted dollars. Cronometer helped me go to full vegan. I had those inherent misconceptions and fears about nutrients, but of course now I know I get great nutrition and should have been concerned long ago.

Cronometer is GREAT! Even though I was eating whole foods plant-based, it showed me that I'm always low on zinc. I take a multivitamin everyday and supplement responsibly and I feel SO much better. Cronometer for the win!

Chronometer, help me through my transition 4 months back. It helps you keep your food top of mind. Great overview of the tool, a few things, the mobile app is free, but you can upgrade to get additional features. (for example exporting your data to get to your doctor)And one thing that is very helpful in Cronometer is making your own recipes, So if you have a complicated beans and rice burrito recipe you can enter it in once and then use it over and over again. Thanks Mic!

I would recommend to eat mushrooms every day. They have a wild amount of selenium (a nutrient that sometimes it might be hard to get). As well, they provide awesome vitamin B's and their calorie content is really low, so dont be worried to have your mouth stuffed! And they are delicious!
Pumpkin seeds and beans, awesome for zinc. Spinach and almonds, awesome for vitamin E (and shitloads of more stuff).
I love to eat a HUGE bowl of salad (300 grams of raw Spinach) with some fruit (banana and blackberries works awesome) and seeds. 300g of Spinach sounds crazy, but with sweet food and crunchy food it goes all the way down without blinking an eye. Im a lazy guy, so Im sure you can improve the recipe.
Check out the nutricional content of foods in your country. Canned brown beans here in Spain tend to be like 90 kcal every 100 grams, and in Cronometer is more. Put directly the calorie content of your food, as it might give you a more accurate representation of what you're eating.
Get lost into asian markets if you live in a big city to make it interesting and have fun discovering new things. My last discoveries were a ridicously cheap nongmo tofu and natto. This last one, ugh and yummy.

If you're worried about your selenium intake, just eat a brazil nut. One single nut covers your daily need of that nutrient:)

      @JISD89 6 років тому +5

Sure thing! Thanks for pointing it out, as it is a good option! But I prefer to keep space for other fats (almonds, pumpkin seeds, flaxseed, etc.), and at least where I live it is not really the easiest thing to find Brazil nuts. But definitively, a good point!

I love the free app. I believe I use all the functions, create recipes, create food, creating notes, weight gain and loss charting. I kept track of every morsel that went into my mouth and lost 30 pounds. I stopped for several months, gained about five back and now I'm back at it for the last 20 pounds. I was wondering if the "gold" version was significantly better than the free version. I know the history and charting isn't as robust with the free, but I just like to see the weight loss line go down. The nutritional history and data - not so much. It really helped this 70 YO get control of my life. Thanks, Cronometer.

I also like the feature to be able to save meals that you make a lot. That way let's say if you eat the same breakfast you can add all it once then just click that one meal. That way you are not having to add all the ingredients every single time.

Modestly Vegan you should use the standard American diet as an example. Paleo people (especially the health cautious and serious ones) don't tend to miss any nutrients. But trust me, the average American diet would be fun to see.

Love this! I have an overactive thyroid so I need to eat loads of food to maintain my weight on a vegan diet. Keeping track of all the calories and nutrients can get annoying so I like to eat foods that have the most bang for your buck.
After examining my blood results I need to try raising my HDL cholesterol levels and lower my sodium levels, so it'll be nice to look up a lot of my weekly staple foods to get an idea of where I stand and what needs to be adjusted.
Eventually I'll create the perfect weekly grocery list ;p plus or minus a few things
How much do you guys spend per week on food?
I have a 2200 Cal daily requirement which I can normally fulfill for about $50-$70 per week

Mic, will you do a video on water filtration? More specifically the things we should be filtering out of our drinking water, and the best kinds of filters? What happens when we drink RO water that is devoid of minerals? Should we be drinking fluoride, or is it probably okay in small doses? I know it's not specifically vegan...but I bet a lot of your viewers would appreciate the info.
