  • Starch. It might not sound fancy but its role in human history has been undeniably powerful and largely ignored as the popular carb-fearing notions dominate the airwaves.

    switching to starch based was the best decision of my life.
    So much money saved, lost 25 pounds since April, not sluggish in the morning, lots of energy throughout the day, no more constipation. the list goes on and on.

      The funny thing is, when I started eating more carbs, I started losing so much weight without even trying.
      Makes you wonder if the diet industry is knowingly sabotaging people's efforts at weight loss, so they can keep taking people's money with stupid fad diets that don't work.

      Songbirdo, Same here. Since going vegan my carb intake has gone up significantly. On a vegan diet, carbs are the best way to feel full. This evening I had rice with chickpeas (Chana Masala) and I know that this meal will keep me full well into tomorrow!!
      Of course I get 95% of my carbs from the whole stuff, like grains, potatoes, rice, etc. Not from the processed stuff.

    VIDEO REQUEST - Please thumb up if you want Mic to see it!
    I don't know if you've ever talked about gluten before, but in what little research I've done myself, it seems as though much of the problem has to do with HOW we make our bread--the bacteria we use, and how long it rises. Personally, I find it hard to choke down bread unless it's sourdough/rye types. It would be interesting to see you do a video on this because I feel like lots of people who switch to a WFPBD also tend to have gluten allergies. Does how we make our bread matter? And how does sprouted bread differ from normal bread? Do you eat bread? Should we eat bread? Etc., etc.

    If you think about it, the whole idea that carbohydrates will make you fat doesn't make any sense. Carbohydrates are polysaccharides (complex sugars). Your body converts polysaccharides into monosaccharides (simple sugars. In this case, glucose) for your body to use. If you eat more carbohydrates than your body can use, they're stored in the liver as glycogen (after they're converted to glucose during digestion), not fat. When your body doesn't have enough glucose, it takes glycogen from the liver and converts it back to glucose. It would be very inefficient for your body to store carbohydrates as fat.

      +Ashley Nicole I've been vegan for a year and 3 months, I eat a lot of carbs (usually at least 60%), and I have lost a lot of weight. A few people I know have commented that I have lost a lot of weight. I also lift weights, and have gained muscle, so I don't know how many pounds I have lost, because I gained some weight in muscle. I would say I have lost around 40 pounds of fat so far.

      autumnsylver being vegan is honestly so amazing! I really love it. I didn't expect half of what I got when I became vegan. My digestive issues have cleared up, I had a cyst on my ovary that used to cause me serious pain, I don't even think it's there anymore, I feel no pain there, I'm not bloated, I always have energy, I feel so "light and airy" (I can't think of a better way to describe it LOL) it's just amazing what it can do for the human body!

    • @autumnsylver

      I noticed a lot of good things after going vegan, too. I used to get really bad acid reflux, but I don't anymore. (I used to take an extra strength over the counter acid reducer, but I was able to stop taking it). I don't have to use my asthma inhaler as much. My skin got clearer. I have way more energy, and I have lost a lot of weight.
      And I know what you mean about feeling lighter. I have heard a lot of vegans say that they felt lighter, and I did too. I don't know why exactly. It was weird, but good.

    I eat a high carb diet, and I've lost almost 30 lbs in 6 months. carbs give you energy. The issue is the amount of fat people eat. You need carbs to live, I definitely don't discriminate on the pasta, bread, potatoes or beans. Carbs are your friend guys:)

    • @InTrancedState
      @InTrancedState 6 років тому +1

      You don't need carbs to live. Your body produces enough glucose on its own to power any specific systems that need it. Fats and proteins are essential macronutrients while carbohydrates are not. Otherwise you would see dead keto dieters everywhere but alas they are still alive and flourishing.

    • @anarkitype4017
      @anarkitype4017 7 років тому +1

      +Lucie yea I have the same issue, and I think its because our body literally wants us to eat as much as we can. The digestive enzymes produced from the fibre and starch create some sort of circle of hunger, which is why very active vegans like myself need a lot of calories per meal, and frequent meals.

    • @anarkitype4017
      @anarkitype4017 7 років тому

      Because of the enzymes activated yes. And I agree. I often mix in ground flaxseed with my brown rice, or with my curried black bean and chard. It helps to stop your stomach going super-digestive over all that different fibre.

And that is it doesn't matter how much we know about our ancestors, we will never be able to know with 100% certainty what is the optimal human diet. All we can have is to bet on what is best to eat.
    However, I think is very nice to know we can thrive without the need of meat at all. Vegans can CHOOSE and still do pretty well with either cook or raw diets. Isn't that powerful?
    Now, my take is if we apply common sense raw whole foods makes it perhaps the most logical to choose because of the simplicity to consume and the nutrient quality found in raw foods.
    The debate between meat, cooked Vegans and raw vegans shouldn't be over. The more debate the more evidence and knowledge we have to discard the bad foods and keep the good ones. For now just have a out-of-the-box thinking and trust your own judgement and common sense and don't force anybody on your way if thinking and accept there is a chance you could still be wrong in your choice even if you think you are right.

Since I have transitioned my 20-year plus vegan diet into a high starch, SOS-free whole food diet, I have lost over 10 pounds (much to my happy surprise) and improved my running times (9 minutes off my best time in my most recent half marathon). How about you read all of the dozens of Anthropology research that indicates that early humans were meat-eaters. Only in the pseudo-science world of UA-cam does anyone agree to Veganism as a science. Veganism has turned into an ideology that twists everything so that everything just conveniently points to no animal products. There's no fairness or objectivity here. Just dozens of prominent UA-cam channels doing everything they can to show that all meat and dairy is bad and only plants could ever be good, all for the sake of taking the moral high ground of not hurting the animal. That takes precedence over anything else.

Big pharma sure doesn't want us to give up meat and diary, who would they push all their statin and other drugs on if people were healthy? Wow, how horrible people take the moral high ground and don't want to breed billions of animals into existence for the purpose of exploiting and slaughtering them unnecessarily. Then why am I not attracted to potatoes? Surely if I'm designed to eat them, then I'd be attracted to them, like carnivores to meat? Also how come so many people struggle to digest starch, like bananas before they're ripe? I think we're frugivores, hence why everyone loves sugar, eats desserts, and are attracted to a bright orange mango or red strawberry from far away rather than a boring looking potato. Bananas are in season all year round in the tropics, where humans originate from

      Obviously compared to fruit we've only been eating starches a relatively short amount of time. the main takeaway is that something-vore denotes what something is eating, not really what it's adapted to eat.
      Case in point; omnivore. The term itself does not denote any particular group as it is not a taxon (it has no scientific classification). This is because creatures that eat omnivorously vary so wildly there is no way they can be grouped in the same way herbivore or carnivore can. Bears are considered omnivores, but are clearly just carnivores that eat berries to help them store extra fat for hibernation. On the opposite side, goats and pigs are considered omnivores since they'll eat almost anything they can find. They're both clearly herbivores. We've obviously adapted a lot to cooked starches in the short time we've been eating them but our earlier food drive is still present and very powerful. I'd say it's still fair to call us frugivores, but I think starchivores also fits as well. So basically we're like the bears in that we have adapted to eating cooked starches as our primary calorie source, but we're still technically frugivores underneath.

      @thiccen little if you're going to eat cooked meat you'd need to consume it together with fresh vegetables since cooked meat is extremely difficult to digest and the enzymes from plants helps break down the meat. And if you're eating meat raw there's no need to consume it with plants. Also it's important to drink vegetables for its nutrients. I for one love to drink carrot juice with celery together with fresh milk. I partially cook my eggs with unsalted butter and have my steak medium rare. Just with diet alone I have put on significant amount of muscle mass without even hitting the gym. Also the source of meat is absolutely vital. You'd be surprised to find that the majority of people against factory farming are meat eaters since we value the importance of keeping our stock as healthy and happy as possible. I have great admiration for ethical vegans but to say we don't need meat is a false claim. Any professional trainer will tell you meat is vital for optimal health. The smartest most successful cities have raw meat as part of their diet. While predominantly vegetarian nations like India, Ireland and parts of Africa are the worst performers.

Increase your portion sizes and see how you feel. What foods do you eat? What carbs do you fear? You should never fear foods especially carbs! Increase the sizes of your meals and eat more healthy fats too as they help with satiation (feeling full for longer periods of time).

      thank you all so much for the answers! I avoid white bread, pasta and rice as much as possible and consume potatoes, whole grain and wild rice, oats, rye bread and similar carb sources but I feel guilty about eating them so I don't eat until I'm satisfied. I guess its a bad habit. I am working out regularly too and I'm afraid that too many carbs will mess up my goals... probably silly. I will work on it from tomorrow!

      What do you mean "acidify the body". The blood maintains a very consistent pH. So I am a little confused by that statement.

    • @OceanPancake
      @OceanPancake 7 років тому

      Starches definitely do not acidify our bodies. While yes, eating fruit is important many places around the world do not have access to fresh luscious fruits year round, and therefore depend and have depended for thousands of years on starch based foods.

    Who gives a shit. This is just as much of an appeal to nature as when meateaters claim we're natural carni-/omnivores. It doesn't matter what's natural. What matters is what we do now.

    • @vegangamergirl
      @vegangamergirl 7 років тому +6

      well I think appeal to nature is not a good argument on itself. It's not "it's natural, so we should do it", but rather "our ancestors did it, so maybe we can think about the usefulness of this behavior, and get a benefit for our health." :)

    • @Ryalnotch
      @Ryalnotch 7 років тому +4

      Strange Ape No, the main arguments are the physiological adaptations we have made to starch, the history of it is just a context for those adaptations. No one is saying X is good because it's natural but rather that X is good because of Y and Y *is* because of our history.

    Starch is just happen to be the main calorie source ever since the agricultural revolution some 10000-5000 years ago. I was a starch eater felt great but now switched to a raw vegan diet with some cooked carbs here and there just to do my own experience and wow there is no comparison!
    "Starch is the perfect Brain Food because it turns into Glucose which our brain eats up like crazy" SO then why not simply eat Fruit that actually is simple glucose fructose and doesnt need to be converted. Our body needs the simple sugar simple amino acids and simple fatty acids which all is contained in perfect ratio in Raw Fruits and Vegetables.
    Then the argument that cooking food made our brain bigger. Fruit did that and then we invented fire. You have to have a developed brain to invent such a complicated thing.
    The greatest civilizations happened to be aggressive and blood thirsty which shows that cooking our food awakens a dark side in us.
    And the last thing I want to mention is that starches are not delicious. You have to season them. the best dishes are always sweet and salty which fruit is naturally (sugar and sodium) Then try a really ripe mango or a papaya or a durian and you will be surprised by an explosion of taste. The tastier and sweeter the fruit the higher the BRIX value = which is the nutrition in the fruit. Intelligent natures design and pretty logic cause nature tells us with the smell and the taste whats good for us. Its a symbiotic relation. We eat the flesh and spread the seeds and do not kill the plant which we do eating all the starch plants!
    You are doing a great job because you are getting a lot of people vegan and starch is definitely the second best after Fruit and a great backup. Im not ranting here or trying to cause separation just want to encourage people to try themselves and be open for new experiences cause that is how you really learn the truth!

      I think all starches are delicious without anything on them except brown rice, barley, and millet. I can easily eat oats, potatoes, sweet potatoes, quinoa, and buckwheat plain without anything added to them and really enjoy it. brown rice is ok plain but not that delicious. Buckwheat is extremely delicious with nothing added. I never add any seasonings or sugar or salt.

      More nuts or avocados doesn't help me. They're too high in fat. Low fat high carbohydrate with cooked grains and potatoes is better than high fat 100% raw with a lot of nuts and avocados

      Agree. Out of personal experience, the raw diet is better than a starch based one. Fruit being the main source for calories. I personally think that humans are frugivores, but it's hard to live that lifestyle so cooked food is a good addition. Vegan is the way to go!

  • @KathleenGallafraigh

    I was expecting a lot more comments from those that study Dr. Douglas Graham. Regardless of the way things are today, if humans came from a perfect tropical environment, we are fruitarians who now live on a damaged planet. And thankfully, we can do very well on starches. As I do not subscribe to the evolution theories and base my origin on the Creation theory (both theories due to rules of science), the Garden of Eden was filled with fruits and herbs. It doesn't say grains and roots. That's not to say that I don't believe Adam and Eve ate grains and roots. I just do not comprehend them giving those items more than a taste from curiosity when such sweet and savory abundance was everywhere with no need to soak it or put fire to it in order to make it delicious. It takes so much effort to make many starches palatable and digestible, that it doesn't make sense to do it unless you have to. Watch children that put things in their mouths. They do not see raw wheat or beans as food. They are toys. But a strawberry or peach is easily recognizable. There are so many more important things to spend time on. Just ask any mom, making three meals for her whole family every day. She'd love to just tell them all to go forage in the berry bushes and keep her kitchen clean. :)

    • @xvi1921
      @xvi1921 5 років тому

      Yeah, I have to agree. Fruits are infinitely more tasty and satisfying than starches will ever be. Starches are great in a pinch if you run out of fruit, or if you are feeling like something salty and you need something to go with your salt.
