      @@warpedpolygon if you're thinking about upgrading your PC to run emulators, you should try AMD's APUs. at first i was skeptical but after seeing how well they perform with such demanding emulators like RPCS3 and Xenia without even having a dedicated graphic card i was speechless to say the least.
      the only reason i see to get a Video Card would be to try higher resolutions.

    My PSX emulation started way back in 2003 with the ePSXe software and up until December 2023 I stood with them. However after I found Duckstation by complete accident I realized how minuscule ePSXe was compared to this newer software, specially at the settings configurations, but most importantly, proper sub-pixel precision instead of a half implemented hack.
    For me it was hard to leave ePSXe after using it for more than 20 years, but there was no way I could write off the huge advantage Duckstation had, so as a goodbye to ePSXe I made a marathon of the first 5 games I played on it before officially jumping ship into this newer piece of software.

    One of the best enhancements for me is xBR texture filtering, since old CRT TV pixels and analog TV signal used to blend pixels and prevent aliasing you can use xBR to get a softer picture like the one you would get with an old CRT TV instead of liquid cristal sharp square pixel from today monitors and TVs, you can also use MSAA to get rid of some other sharp pixels.

    5:14 This is a little misleading. Aliasing aka jaggies, is a problem at low resolutions because the pixels are larger, and more conspicuous. But at higher resolutions, the pixels become smaller and more dense, i.e. the PPI (pixels per inch) increases, which makes aliasing less conspicuous. Anti-Aliasing refers to a range of filters which blur and generally degrade the overall picture quality in attempt to mask the jaggies. But at high resolutions, anti-aliasing is not necessary as the aliasing is no longer noticeable.

    • @warpedpolygon
      @warpedpolygon  8 місяців тому +1

      Yeah i get what you are saying. It's not actually anti aliasing it's just increasing the amount of pixels removing the need for anti aliasing.

      Thanks mate. Shaders aren't something I generally mess with. I have a love hate relationship with them that edges towards the hate side lol. For me personally if I'm playing on a digital display, adding too many screen effects can look iffy. I like a good clean signal with smoothing exactly where I wan't it which a lot of modern emulators have without the need for shaders. But...saying that, that there are some shaders that are very good in specific scenarios. Even for overlays that sinden users need.

    It would be a good idea to add next to the slider buttons on their left side an indication saying ON/OFF
    SO it says if the feature is on or off
    It would also be awesome if Duckstation could be updated by the developers to actually integrate NATIVELY the best possible settings already pre-installed for every single game
    SO the best possible enhancements are all already PREINSTALL and detail
    SO we can just click on enhance all to the best possible settings
    SO it changes the settings for each game to the best possible settings for that specific game already NATIVELY install inside the emulator already
    That be great idea.

      I hear what you are saying. Usually I'd agree with you but for PS1 "best video settings" is really personal preference. What I like differs from what others like. All these's setting are here for you to apply how you wan't them to be. That's why I mentioned defaults being your starting point for you to tweak from there. I very much doubt the'll be a button you can press for best settings with any emulator tbh. You'd have to factor in hardware differences and a whole bunch of other variables, on top of emulators getting updates that fundamentally change things over time.

    Amazing explanations, thank you so much. Is there a way to keep the graphics as close as possible to the PS1 original hardware? What would be the settings for that? And another question is, the letters for example in Metal Gear are too pixalated, what's the best way to fix that? I don't remember them being that bad in CRT. Oh and lastly, Metal Gear has a brightness setting in the options, I couldn't find a way to adjust that... I hope you or someone else can follow up with this, thank you much!

    • @warpedpolygon
      @warpedpolygon  7 місяців тому +1

      For what you want just run at original resolution and slap a crt shader on it.
      Yes text on digital displays will look pixalated especially when upscaled. The reason it didn't look that bad on crt is because scanlines masked the pixalation somewhat. Adaptive Downsampling will smooth the text out, but it wont look as it did on a crt as it's not being played on a crt.

    its kinda like i do the set up, usually i play one game only at a specific time and so i dont change per game maybe i shouldve done that but now its irrelevant.
    One thing i like to experiment with is post process, i mean using only Cccalibrator and it can quite nicely enhance colors and shades etc. so the game looks more vibrant then vanila.
    But its also like u know per game basis, there were some games that with my previous set up looked like i mean how could i describe it, like neon color pallete vomit fest.
    It was bad, other games looked fantastic with it. Like playing Wink 40. And with the settings i have the game looks quite nice. Sure its nothing special compared to whats possible nowadays but still the difference is like almost night/day. Same with Syphon Filter games. Sadly for the first and third game PGXP was no go. I mean nothing happens, wobbly wobbly all the way, especially the third game is like ridiculous, but probably cause playing on high res and modern display so yeah, was made with CRT in mind and it looks the way.
    But Wink 40, beautiful.
    Also recommend using the last PGXP option CPU mode if u well want to torture urself. :)
    Anyway Duckstation is a game changer from the time it first came out, until today, i wouldnt change it for anything. Ez to set up, to use, and like 99% of the games or more works like without any problems.
    Also i use Vulkan. Mostly changing if like per game u know. Game has issues, first think i try, then play with other settings.
    WIth one game i needed even adjust PGXP in advanced settings, cause it did get rid of the wobbly but the gaps stayed and was a bit irritating, but after a little tinkering, i almost made it work as it shouldve. Almost :).
    Anyway. The only game, repeat THE ONLY game i had like real trouble even running was Duke Nukem 3D. I mean, the game ran, but the screen stayed frozen. Couldnt figure out why what was the issue. Maybe i didnt try hard enough to correct the problem. The other Duke Nukem games ran great.

      Mgs suffers from 'wobble' quite badly. Even pgxp doesn't fix it all the way. Just is what is with that one. You may prefer the pc port, integral as it doesn't have this issue. However, it is really best played on PlayStation

  • @litjellyfish
    @litjellyfish 8 місяців тому

    I actually feel many look worse. Sure it’s higher resolution and sharper but due to the low poly objects it make it look stiff and plastic.
    I would much more suggest to use a CRT shader filter. Then it still looks less blocky and smoother but it adds details by the nature of it. Also it looks more like what it actually did back in the days playing those games on a CRT TV

    • @warpedpolygon
      @warpedpolygon  8 місяців тому +2

      This is more geared to enhancing than replicating the look of the original graphics. I agree og crt deals with pixel art intended for scan lines much better, for e.g. the infamous Draculas red eyes in SOTN.
      For me it's either og hardware with crt or emulation setup for digital displays. No in-between. I don't really cross the lines with crt shaders im emulation.
      Nice thing is we can all have it our own way.

      @@warpedpolygon yes for sure the real thing is the best :) I get what you mean. Thing is for me that some of the things get enchanted but some gets dehanced also.
      So my question to you is. Do you don’t think it looks good with (good ones of course) CRT shaders? Like it depends on games. When it comes to games made in 640x480 so say PS2 / Dreamcast era I feel CRT shaders vs just upscaling is a case by case.
      But for PS1 era and below I have found few games that look better with just upscaling (even with HD texture packs etc - FSAA , etc) compared to upscaled with CRT shader.
      Maybe in the future with AI where it would not just scale up stuff but also redo textures, meshes with more detail etc then I am all for it.
      Like I no your video. Almost at start with Croc. The crocodile loos very picky of course with wobbly textures. But in the emulated it loos like blocky lego.
      For me having higher texture resolutions, filtering. Frame interpolation and perspective correct textures would be fine. So what throws me off is this resolution upscale that just brings out how blocky object was. So for me the CRT is a way to avoid this blockingness while getting rid of the pixly stuff.
      And all this is 3D of course. For 2D in most case or at least where the art was done for CRT I find it always looking better with CRT shaders (real CRT of course)
      Hope this explains more what I meant
