- Hi everyone. I made this video to explain some of the things that I wish I would’ve known before joining sonography school. I hope this helps everyone who’s been thinking about becoming one or is about to start sonography school. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment below!

I just failed my physics final exam today. And I have to retake the class all over again. I cry like a baby I feel like a failure people don’t tell you how hard physics really is!!
I’m so sorry that happened to you. Physics is really difficult to grasp. You are NOT a failure girl. I got a good enough grade to pass the class, but lord knows I was struggling. I pray you prosper in your studies and do well the next time. Don’t give up on what you want. You got this! ❤️

I am currently taking physics and it is challenging for me as well. My course is fast track and it’s so hard to remember which formulas to use to solve problems

1. blood test, CPR
2. scan everything
3. can't get perfect pic in one go
4. takes time -need to go through multiple motions
5. a lot of case studies , readings
6. a lot of physics
7. radiologists put a lot of trusts in you
I'm just exploring sonography as a possible new career after 15 years as a chef. I haven't made a decision yet but am leaning towards sonography and I really appreciate your videos. You don't want to look into phlebotomy first as a first step into healthcare field, it's up to you though but I plan on going to sonography or respiratory therapist after 3+ of phlebotomy.

the trick to doing bp manually is raising the meter to 160 and then listening for the first sound and the last one ... trust me i hate doing bp manually too as a MA

I wanted to go into nursing but before i went forward with it i became a CNA where youre at the very bottom. It made me switch over to sonography. I can handle all the bodily fluids, all my patients loved me BUT the responsibility the nurses had seemed extremely draining. And everyone i see do diagnostic specialties seem to love it and ive always loved learning about the human body. I start my dms program tomorrow! but im getting a head start on the corse material... wish me luck!!!🥰

I went through xray school first before ultrasound school, so i was already prepared for everything for ultrasound school.

Thank you for this. I am taking my RN prereqs, I’m in microbio now and just need Physio. But if I were to take physics I could also apply for sonography as well as Rad tech (don’t think you need physics for that though but with all my pre reqs these are programs I am eligible for) I’m still researching and the only scary part is the physics. I do hope I’m able to make up my mind but I’m leaning towards ultrasound, but also still need to look more up about rad tech! Thank you again!!

I’m in clinicals right now and so far it hasn’t been too bad lol. Only with transvaginal ultrasounds, sometimes if they’re on their period, you can smell the blood, but it hasn’t been that bad so don’t be nervous!

Question: I’ve been out of school for 10 years now. Will going back to become a sonographer be incredibly difficult for someone who has been out of school for so long?
Honestly, I think it would be a challenge. You would have to have great time management and prioritization skills. If you do, you could definitely get back into the swing of things. Plus, you'll likely have to take many prerequisite courses before being able to apply to the sonography program. While the prequisite courses are no where near as challenging as the sonography courses, theyre still difficult and will definitely help prepare you for the actual sono program itself. Ive known sonographers who started the program after being out of school for years and did extremely well.
Hi! I agree with their comment! Do I think it’s challenging regardless of whether you’ve been out of school long or not. Organization, successful study habits, and flexibility with your schedule is main thing you need to be successful in sonography. If you are dedicated, I’m very sure you’ll do well!

Good Lord I'm in an accelerated 16 month program and I wish you all luck it is intense and that's putting it lightly. I highly recommend do not work whatsoever your clinical hours will most likely be around what mine are and that's 900. Good luck😅👍
Hey! I had a question concerning the bodily fluids. I just recently joined a sonography program and was wondering if we clean patients like nurses do? Like wipe butts, urine, ect.
Hey hun! Yes and no lol. If a patient has to pee or poop during your exam then you’ll have to get them a bed pan or a bag for vomit, but we don’t actually clean them. From my experience, I haven’t had to clean a patient. We’ll just call their nurse and let them know what happened so they can be aware. I have had patients pee on the stretcher or bleed on the stretcher during the exam. We had to clean up the bed, but we didn’t clean the patient up. We got them a new gown and let the nurses know. I hope this helps!
Thank you for awesome video! I have a quick question. Do you use needles? I’m nervous around them. I stayed away from xray bc of needles but I’m not sure about sonography. Tia ❤
Thank you!! Yes I do use needles for biopsies. In clinicals right now, I’ve observed at least 3 biopsies and they have to put the needles in the sterile tray and inject numbing medication into syringes, but you’ll be just assisting! It’s not too bad, I guess it just depends on where you work!

Yes! Half of my graduating class class are mothers and they are doing an amazing job! It will be difficult being a mother and in school, but it can definitely be done!

So I plan to be a diagnostic medical sonographer. I plan to graduate high school early since I'm a sophomore now I plan to graduate as a junior. I home school and my home school program has a program to do college with your high school. So one semester of a college class Count for one high school year credit. So instead of taking a 2 semester high school math class, I would take a 1 semester college math class and the credit for that class counts as 1 high school and 1 college. So, I have 7 credits left to graduate high school, if I play my cards rught I can get all of my pre requisite classes done in Hugh school. And since it's in Hugh school all the college classes would be free to me I don't even have to buy any books I think, the school pays for it. So I this is what my 11th grade classes would look like normally if I didn't do the college credit plus program: (and btw you can't take 2 English or 2 math classes in the same school year if you only do high school classes, so this wouldn't even work I wouldn't be able to Grad early but here it is anyways)

And these are Ober the course if 2 semesters. 1 college class is only 1 semester long. Meaning I wouldn't have 10 classes per semester I would have 6 classes per semester.
4 college and 2 high school.
Now this might be a big load of work. But, if I do this I can accomplish the following:
Graduate High school at 17 years old, [literally 2 month after I turn 17] & graduate with 8 college credits/ vlasses including ALL of my pre requisites. Be on track to get my degree!
Then I would have my summer of '24 and I would take 3 college classes, because I can't deal with 6 college asses in ONE SEMESTER which is the plan for the first year first semester in my college, but luckily I can change it. So summer semester I take 3 of my college classes.
Then fall semester 2024 I would take 3 classes in my community College.
Then no winter semester
Then spring semester In 2025 ( the semester I turn 18 ayyy)
I have only 8 more college classes left to get my degree so I could either do 4 more semesters with 2 classes in each...OR 3 more semesters with 3 in the first 2 and 2 in the last one. OR 2 more semesters with 4 classes in each. I probably will do wither the 2nd option.
So spring semester 2025: 3 classes
Summer semester 2025: 3 classes
Fall semester 2025: 2 classes
Meaning I will graduate with my degree at 18 years old! Like 5~6 months before I turn 19 lol
Then I would just need to continue to have a C [2.0] GPA or higher throughout the college program and to get in I need a 3.0 or higher which is easy I have a 3.3 I think and that because I tanked last year 💀 like it was badddd last year, my teacher said I could easily get 4.0 or higher this year so 🤷🏼♀️.

Sounds like you got it all mapped out! That’s cool that you school offers that. That’s a lot of classes to take at one time, but you believe you handle that then definitely go for it. Ultrasound is a lot harder than you think, but don’t get discouraged. Time management and dedication is key. Good luck and I wish you the best!

Hi, I would suggest reading chapters 6, 12, 15, 18-21 heavily in your Edelman book. Read the other chapters too, but the ones that I listed are the most important. You MUST understand Doppler, aliasing, wall filter and artifacts because those questions are graded at a heavier percentage than the other concepts. Pay close attention to the bolded words, purple boxes and charts in the book because they give you hints of what will most likely be on your exam. Study 3 chapters a day or less, if you study too many chapters at one time you’re going to overwhelm your brain and not retain everything that you studied. I hope this helps. Ofcourse! Thank you for watching! There’s a lot of terminology that you’ll have to learn, but it’s not impossible. You definitely may have to study harder, but it’s still do-able

Echo is completely different from general ultrasound. You would have to end up picking between echo and general ultrasound. You can always be cross trained on the job in echo, but I don’t think you can cross train from echo to general ultrasound.

No we didn’t
I have a question do you recommend me doing radiology school and then ultrasound for better job opportunity like how MRI is most hospital where the big pay need you to have a radiology tech degree even if you have MRI degree?
Rad tech and sonography are two completely different roles. If you’re looking to go into MRI, normally a “pre-req” is having completed a rad tech program.

No we do not stick any needles into patients. The most you will do is set up the sterile trays for the doctor of physician assistant
How much do you use physics in the actual day to day job?
When giving diagnosis, it plays a major part
How much free time do you have?
When you are working in the field and can’t get a good image due to complications like maybe gas, what happens?
You typically will try to find another area to see get a better image, but if you can’t, you’ll mention it in you technologist impressions which are the notes that we write to the doctor about what we saw. From there, the doctor will determine whether they want the patient to be rescanned after fasting for 6-8 hours or try another motility that might see it better like CT or MRI
are you trained on inserting IV’s?
No. No don’t insert IV’s. I was given training on them (I’m not sure why lol), but we don’t do them!
