Odion had one duel in the series and Marik really went out of his way to ruin it. "- Master Marik, I'm about to win ! I have finally summoned my boss monster, there's nothing Joey can do ! - Use the God Card to convince them you're me. - But Master, they are already convinced and you've given them no reason to suspect you. - Don't care, use it. - But Master, this card has killed every duelist that tried to play it ! It's like playing russian roulette but the gun is fully loaded ! - The Mega Ultra Chicken, Odion ! Use it ! -... I hate my life."
And I'm sorry to say it only got worse for Joey after this. Because he had the hardest time against Valon and Solomon, and got outright destroyed by Zigried.
@@SabeNo-rh7mb I'm still pissed how the Grand Championship arc treated Joey. He went from making Yami Marik have a panic attack to just being some other rich boy's dog
@@zeospark9715 Marik (both versions) was just a bad duelist. Hate to say it, but despite his threat and ominous presence, he would not gotten as nearly as far in that tournament without the god cards or the shadow games. Even *Mai* of all people was giving him trouble before she made the mistake of trying to summon Ra herself. *Worse.* It was Odion who won all the locator cards needed for both him and Marik to even enter the finals. Meaning Marik himself never had to do a thing.
@@sherwood750 "It's Melvin! No doubt he's going to say the most fiendish and heartless thing you've ever heard!" "What a lovely day." "Take that back, you fiend!"
Well for quarter finals, semi finals, and the final duel, but now we can do the preliminaries, like yugi vs the rare hunter, or arcana, or strings, you get the idea
Odion deserves some respect: he didn't rely on Shadow Games nor used Millenium items like Marik and Ishizu, he played fair and square just like any regular duelist and he could have the won if he didn't played the fake Winged Dragon of Ra. Also he won 12 locator for him and Marik which is also impressive.
Reading through the manga, Odion's field spell apparently lets HIM place 2 trap cards down at once. So apparently a rule in Battle City is only putting down a single set card at a time. His temple is also a continuous spell card, not a field spell card. On his first turn, he summons Gearfried, Panther Warrior...and Landstar. Geez. It is fully stated, even written on the visible card shown, that the Apophis Trap Monsters are summonable after an attack. Fisherman is a 4 star monster in the manga, and because Joey didn't take Insect Queen, he has Jinzo and Fisherman on the field when Odion draws the fake Ra. So instead, he puts down Baby Dragon. Yeah, Selket doesn't ever have its defense displayed in the manga, since it is unnecessary. Oh, and Joey did have a monster in his hand in the manga, but didn't play it due to Selket being too strong. But Odion also gives Joey his respect, which is why Joey calls him out on not being Marik. So Marik orders Odion to prove otherwise by summoning Ra. Yugi already had suspicions that Odion isn't Marik, which he reveals after Joey calls Odion out, and showing a card in the midst of the duel would probably be illegal. So the only way to prove it would be to summon Ra, which Yugi suspected was sealed in the temple. And yeah, Marik says that sealing a card in the temple would protect him from both attacks and magic. So yes, shenanigans at the end, but for Marik, it was entirely justifiable. Only by summoning Ra would Odion dash away any claims that he isn't Marik, and showing the card may reveal it to be a fake, or even illegal during a duel.
yeah NO it wasn't justified for MARIK he could have just told Odion to show he had the Winged Dragon of Ra on the field AFTER the duel was over and tell Joey he chose not to use it in order to not reveal it effects to the rest of the duelist watching the duel
why did odion explicitly play temple in the field slot then? irl it's continuous but that anime duel it's a field. kinda like how magical hats in the anime is a spell, spellbinding circle is one at first but only the one time against kaiba's ghost, negate attack was also a spell early and only settled as a trap by season 4, copycat and time wizard are playable as monsters or spells, and shadow spell is a normal spell. besides temple of the kings the irl card didn't come out until the marik structure deck which came out i think a good couple of years into the gx or 5d's run so it was designed to be a field, but konami when printing it decided temple with its original pre-errata effect wasn't really searchable by terraforming as even back then field spells were just starting to pick up a bit of steam and they sidestepped that issue by saying it's continuous for irl.
Joey won Insect Queen, but never added it to his deck in the manga. That's how it should have been in the anime too. Joey was smart to only add Jinzo and Legendary Fisherman to his deck in the manga.
I'm starting to notice how bad the quarterfinals were in the Battle City Tournament. Yugi vs. Bakura was riddled with misplays and alternate plays that could've ended the duel earlier. The only saving grace was Yugi summoning Silfer the Sky Dragon. Joey vs. Odion was one of the biggest robs, as Odion could've won if he didn't follow Marik's orders. Marik vs. Mai was arguably the best of the four main duels, (Yami Marik vs. Yami Bakura was more or less a bonus duel,) but Mai lost her chance when attempted to use the Winged Dragon of Ra. Kaiba vs. Ishizu was another duel where the opponent was robbed. If Ishizu didn't rely on her Millennium Necklace that predicted a predestined duel, and the Millennium Rod not intervening to help Kaiba win, Ishizu would've. And Yami Marik vs. Yami Bakura was a joke. Bakura got absolutely bodied by Yami Marik. Even with the spirit of Marik helping Bakura defeat his eviler counterpart, he still lost. In fact, with the sole exception of Yami Marik using the effects of the Winged Dragon of Ra, Marik didn't lose any life points during this duel.
If Joey had played with a bit more courage and smarts I don’t think Odion would have stood a chance and he would still advance to the top four. But the other three quarter final matches, if both sides from each played a bit smarter it would still be a question mark.
Wasn’t her deck relying on the Mirror Wall trap back then? And Yugi nearly destroyed himself attacking into it repeatedly. And she used another trap (Shadow of Eyes) to complement mirror wall.
If you look back at the duel, you’ll notice that not ONCE does Odion mention the Shadow Realm, which would both be a giveaway to the characters that he wasn’t Marek, but ALSO a giveaway to the VIEWERS that he wasn’t evil
Why would he mention something that doesn't exist? What gave away Rishid was that he acted honourably and acknowledged Jonouchi as a duelist, which doesn't follow for Marik who previously used manipulation and treated people as disposable pawns.
@@kindlingking Because we grew up with the 4Kids dub. People know that there is no shadow realm, although not always how the Dark Games truly work. The manga isn't appreciated enough. Simple as that.
@@kindlingking Marik treated his Ghouls as pawns if it meant taking Atem down with them for the freedom of his lineage and vengeance against the Pharaoh. And now he's doing the same for his brother and look what happened...
@@mystery8820 not just ghouls, the only person he cares about was Rishid (and maybe Ishizu), and even then he let his hubris get better of him, which almost resulted in his brother's death. Doesn't matter what his motivations are thought, even before "going dark" Marik is a scumbag.
15:00 the anime version of Graceful Dice needs a monster with 500 or less attack. But Battle Warrior has 700 with no effects. That's the confusing one.
reason Battle Warrior is still there because it was part of his winning combo against Bonez. There he used Battle Warrior and Sword and Shield to nab him the victory. The irony that Joey had both of these cards during the duel and couldn't pull that combo off again.
that condition makes sense, cuz in the anime, graceful dice multiplies the attack of the pokemon it affects, which is op for cards with more than 500 attack points
It make slightly more sense in the manga where most of his duelists kingdom stuff was level five and higher like tiger axe, yes really, he only had 5 level 4 and under monsters two of which are in his battle city deck. the fact that we only know 9 on the monsters from his manga battle city deck, not including the ones that he won in tournament means he likely didn't have anything else.
In the manga, Battle City rules state that each player may only set 1 Spell and 1 Trap face down per turn, and Temple of the Kings allows the user to set 2 Traps per turn instead, that could be why Odion is only setting 2 of his cards per turn instead of flooding his backrow on his first turn. I’m going to say that the anime works the same way before the Battle City semi finals since nobody does seem to set more than 1 of each type per turn up until the semi finals I believe but I might be wrong.
Considering how Chaotic the activation of all spell, magic and traps can be in one single turn, this restriction doesn't seem like a bad idea right now.
@@viniribr No it doesn't for original YGO, Kaz has already set the rules in stone, you might be mistaken for latter YGO series where it flipped (which Kaz has very little input anyway)
@@viniribr The manga came first for this Yu-Gi-Oh series, so it's an adaptation for it. I’ll always find Joey’s Foolish Burial + Graverobber = Jinzo play iconic. I will say that I do find it frustating that Joey was dead to rights and had no outs to escape Odion’s direct attack. At least if he did have a way out, I would respect him in this duel more, but Marik really almost destroyed himself by forcing Odion to play fake Ra. I think it could’ve been interesting if Joey had a card that would win him the duel during the last turn, so when Marik commands Odion to play fake Ra, he has a 2nd reason as Ra wouldn’t have been affected by the set card. In this scenario, Odion would be gambling on what the set card is, but as we see, he really didn’t want to play fake Ra. As we see in later Battle City, a similar scenario occurs in Joey vs Marik with plot armor saving Marik there, as it does save Joey here.
I wouldn't call Joey vs Marik plot armour. Shadow Games demonstrated what they can do and thus, did what they were supposed to do: be dangerous for people without Millennium Items. So, shadow games were an already established story mechanic at this moment. It's fair to use, as far as I'm concerned. In terms of story, Joey’s fate was deserved. This duel was far more egregious though, because as you stated, Odion had no reason to play Ra. He could have literally just shown he had the fake Egyptian God card after he won the duel.
Grave robber doesn’t do that. For Joey to have a strong ass card like that is antithetical to his profile. It’s like giving beat cards to your little brother.
@@streetguru9350 I think Joey must’ve gotten rid of them. Kaiba does say in that duel in the sub that cards that deal effect damage are illegal in Battle City. But of course, since Marik has Ra and Kaiba wants it, he doesn’t disqualify Marik for playing burns cards so he can get Ra.
You're acting like that's because of something unforeseen. If old school Yugioh cards all had a search effect, a protection effect, and some special summon effect, duels would have only lasted a few turns back then too. Modern Yugioh is basically like playing a videogame with all the cheats turned on. I remember my friends and I would compete to see who could finish a level in Golden Eye the fastest with infinite ammo health enabled. My point is that anything can take skill. And skill seems to be the only defense people have when I bring up how poorly designed modern Yugioh has become.
To be honest, that's a fair point @@robrick9361 , even if I wasn't intentionally trying to point out poorly designed modern Yugioh. Sorry if my comment came across as such.
23:22 - Counterpoint, had Joey swung with Gearfried and Hayabusa full force at the start of the duel, Odion would’ve been left at 200 LP and would’ve been doomed if Joey ever got another opportunity to swing, period. Which Jinzo absolutely would’ve secured later on.
If Joey attacked with Gearfried, Odion would have chained Embodiment of Apophis and he can put it into DEF, which Joey wouldn't have been able to get over.
So fun fact: In the manga, Jinzo is level 7 instead of level 6, meaning it requires two tributes to summon. So due to its real world version being level 6, several duels in the anime were changed to make Joey’s plays with Jinzo make more sense
I don't know if this was intentional or not by the writers, but I love how Joey's Battle City finals starts with him summoning Gearfried, and ends with him summoning Gearfried again at the end of his duel with Marik
Gear fried I see as a monster that represents Joey, he starts off in the finals as a strong warrior, unsure of himself at first, but he's starting off strong to try and duel yugi in the finals, then against marik he summons gearfried on his final turn, as a true warrior ready to take down his enemy and fight his true opponent, unfortunately the warrior falls in battle, succumbing to his injuries from and intense duel
17:04 - HE THREW, right here. 19:00 - On that note, had Joey conserved his Monster Reborn, he could’ve used (after Shield & Sword) to revive Jinzo, who could overpower Serket even if it had it’s real life base DEF of 2000, allowing Fisherman to swing for game after.
@@roncerjani9063 You don’t have to anticipate a monster coming to not instantly blow a Monster Reborn in the hand. He already had Jinzo on the field against a majority Trap deck. He just had to coast till something took Jinzo out and then bring it back when it was more favorable to do so. Like if the monster that took it out suddenly had its ATK dropped to lower than Jinzo’s base 2400.
@@mayborneflower he wanted to build up and deal a heavy blow all at once. It is a bad play the fact that he didn't calculate for his ace being destroyed, but it's not enough to say he threw. Just a case if overextending, which in hindsight wasn't a good thing to do.
Odion: Serket, Atta- Marik: Use the Fake Ra, Odion! Odion: Master, I'm about to win. Marik: Use Ra or else they'll think you're not me! Odion: Master, how about, and hear me out on this, I defeat him here, show I had Ra and say that there was no need to use it on such a weak duelist. He's literally relying on luck to win and if I use the fake Ra like everyone before me, I'll die. Marik: Yea, my plan is better. Use Ra. Odion: *sigh* Fine. But you better not throw a fit and let your dark self take control making all of this pointless. Marik: I swear on my brother's life.
That would completely defeat the plot armor. Although, to be fair, this time Joey barely relied on luck, only a little bit when he played Fairy Box. Also, his luck totally ran out when he kept drawing Spells he had no use for at that point.
I really like seeing these duels reverse engineered and how they can change the perspective of how events play out. I hope you make a video on Yuma vs Nasch. That duel was amazing.
I have a feeling anime Serket's "???" Defense would become the amount of destroyed monsters defense points if it was switched to Defense Mode, honestly.
I second this. I blanked on the name, but it’s an iconic card for Joey that needs him to have a monster out. Seems like a perfect choice for his final brick.
Actually now that i think about it, that would have made the end better if it was Skull Dice, because he could set it along with idk sword/shield to thrown Odion off. Then Odion summons Fake Ra, and you just watch Joey's face fall into disrepair especially if its done after Joey makes his comment about Odion being a respectable duelist
@@TaiDZero True, Joey could have set those Spells, and bluff, But sadly we saw Joey's reaction to drawing them so Odion would know that they're bluffs, Joey needs to work on his Pokerface
What happens with the Embodiment of Apophis problem is something that is very common in these early duels that are adapted from the manga. In this case, what happens is that Embodiment of Apophis can only be activated when you are attacked, its manga effect is: "Activated when an opponent's monster attacks! This card becomes the Trap Monster blablabla" (Thats why anime Odion mentions it). The problem is that the card in the anime does not have that restriction written, so tecnically Odion could simply win in that part of the duel. The duel analysis is completely correct, but for those who are confused about about this type of plays I would recommend taking a look at its manga counterparts since there you can find the reasons for many of the characters weird plays/decisions. Another example of this weird decisions of that (because of the Battle City manga rules) you can only set 1 Trap Card per turn so Temple of the Kings allow Odion to set 2 traps per turn and thats why he only sets 2 in anime as well.
Well, it wouldn't be the only time in which an anime card's effect is wider than what it's written in its text. And I'm not only talking about the God Cards.
Orion was honestly a far better duelist than Marik. Marik mostly depended of using the Shadow Games so his opponents would die before the combat ended, so his decks mostly consisted of torture tool. Good for making the opponents "Give Up", but not the best at actually winning. And this almost costed him the victory multiple times. On the other side, Orion was simply STRONG and had a VERY solid strategy on his deck, and countermeasures against the countermeasures that could be used against it. It's funny to think what would have happened if we changed the games a bit, so Joey fought against Marik instead of Orion, and won (Because we all know he won that duel, but was robbed of it the same way Orion was robbed of winning this one). That could have led to Joey fighting Orion later on, but this time owning the Winged Dragon of Ra, which may have been enough to defeat the Mystical Beast of Serket. And if he lost there, that would mean that Orion, now the true owner of the Winged Dragon of Ra, would ahve fought against Yugi at the end. I know this couldn't happen because story reasons, but taht Orion vs Yugi would ahve been an amazing duel XD.
now that i think of it,that wouldve basically been a yugi vs raphael...odion not wanting to cheat or use tricks, just playing fair and square still wouldve lost,no one can beat destiny draw, but still, wouldve beemn cool
A bit odd since while you can't see the text in full, in a few freeze frames of the Japanese version you can see "battle phase" and while part of it is obscured, there isn't enough space in the part that can't be seen for it to specify that an attack is declared as an activation requirement. At best it might say "Activate only during a Battle Phase. This card is treated as a Normal Monster Card (Reptile-Type/EARTH/Level 4/ATK 1600/DEF 1800), and is Special Summoned to your Monster Card Zone. (This card is also still treated as a Trap Card.)"
"I've already won. I could summon my all-mighty Dragon of Ra, but you showed no skill to be worthy of being destroyed by a god. Now, perish with the rest of your life points!"
The Game Boy Advance title Yu-Gi-Oh! The Sacred Cards honestly makes the Battle City tournament a lot better in my eyes since there aren't any duels that have giant asterisks near them (Joey winning by standing up, Mai not going for game with the Harpie Lady Sisters, Kaiba winning because he saw something in a dream). Yugi still beats Bakura, but your player character duels Odion (you take Ishizu's place) and wins, still freeing Yami Marik as a result. Joey then loses and almost dies to Marik, and Kaiba beats Mai. In the semis, your character beats Yugi and Kaiba loses to Marik, and in the finals, you obviously beat Marik. Sure, it can't be canon for obvious reasons, but at least the duels are believable.
@@tomato2517 I think almost all of the Yu-Gi-Oh games where you play as the guy with the red hat and jacket (who's also the master duel default avatar) do this, eg Tag Force
At the time of 10:26 when you say “and he draws alligator sword” the card Joey is holding is or looks like a pendulum card with a monster top half and a spell bottom half
I think it does need reminding that joey is meant to be an underdog character who never really got his hands on good cards. His only good cards came from his wins vs. other duelists and even then their power level is questionable as really the only good one is Jinzo. He is using a deck of reject cards and shows their potential with cards that people consider not useful, showing that even the meek can be mighty in the right circumstances, effectively mimicing the style Yugi uses throughout the series who uses a combination of cards and boosts and tricks to evade and overpower far stronger monsters. The difference is that Joey likes his cards, he plays what he enjoys. He manages to do well in Duelist Kingdom but Battle City once more trips him up with new rules and he never truly thinks about improving his deck because ironically his luck wins him duels which leads to him being lazy about his deck. By all accounts, he is akin to Yusei from 5Ds. He uses "trash" cards that many don't think are good and he shows people their potential when you let them shine. Gearfried and Flame swordsman both represent joey in a sense in that one is one held back by restraints placed by themselves (in this case his restrain is literally himself, not acknowledging his reliance on luck) and Flame Swordsman the card he wants to be. Later down the line, Joey I feel would develop well and if we got to see him more and see where he would of gone, I feel his deck would revolve around Warrior Toolbox strategies with a small touch of luck thrown in via the Dice cards and keeping Fairy Box in. He isn't a bad duelist. Just a bad deck builder.
Bad cards are bad cards. I hate when anime justifies bad cards for plot or character progression. Irl you'd be laughed at tournaments if you tried that.
I honestly wish we could've seen Rishid duel more than once. The guy collected 12 locator cards in time to make the final rounds and even outplayed Jounouchi. I always rank him as a top 10 strongest duelist (without shenanigans).
@@TGSAnimeWhen Joey drew Polymerization it made me think what it would be like if Jinzo, Insect Queen and Legendary Fisherman could fuse together. What would a Fusion Monster with those materials make if it was made today.
This just proves that far from depending on luck, Joey is the most unlucky duelist in the series. He identified Odion's trap deck immediately, but had to wait several turns before he could use shenanigans to search and summon Jinzo.
Fun fact: There are similar patterns between this duel and the one against Yami Marik, in terms of traps and being close to victory But one moment to highlight, against Yami Marik, Joey in the sub hopes to draw his “giant trunade” (hurricane) card to clear Marik’s field to win But he fails to draw it and it’s a very rare moment to hear a character wish for a card we know is in their deck but fail to draw it, that I wish happened a bit more often
I think with the anime version of Temple of the Kings, its effect would probably go like this: "Both players can only set two cards per turn while this card is face-up on the field. During your Main Phase, you can banish one monster in your hand. During your Main Phase, you can pay half your Life Points and tribute one monster on the field you control to Special Summon the monster banished by this effect. If a monster whose original name is "The Winged Dragon of Ra" is banished by this card's effect, your opponent cannot declare attacks, also monsters you control are unaffected by opponent's card effects."
21:09 They might be more Trap monsters. It would make sense if he had more than just 3 Trap monsters, but because he has Serket out he doesn’t really need them.
I mean TBF Marik has always had.God Tunel Vision so I doubt anybody would believe Odion was him if they knew he had it but chose not to use it, in fact the opposite might be the case. And if Odion didn't have The fake Ra He wouldn't have had the Temple's Peotection, so Joe would have just used the whole Sword and Shield play to win anyways.
@@thekey0123kinda funny you mention that because in a past duel he used Sword and Shield in combo with Battle Warrior to win over Bonez. Peeps wonder why he kept battle warrior, he has a winning combo with it

I have the answer to your Serket question Unless the monster’s effect is negated, a ??? stat is adopted as the current base stat. So that stat is carried over with Shield And Sword I used a setup with Tyranno Infinity equipped with Bashing Shield (which boosts ATK by 1000), and Shield And Sword. Tyrrano Infinity’s effect ATK became its DEF, so its DEF became banished cards times 1000. However the boosted ATK via Bashing Shield carried over to its changed ATK. Since its original DEF was 0, its new ATK became 0 + 1000 due to Bashing shield. To summarize: the altered base stat (white numbers) becomes the new DEF That being said, Serket’s stats would depend on whether its ATK and DEF are being boosted or being changed. If the base stats are being changed (which is usually followed by the word “becomes”), then the 5825 ATK would swap with whatever its DEF number currently is. If its effect was boosting its stats (Which is usually followed by the word “gains”), then Serket would basically just lose 2500 ATK since its original ATK and DEF swap, but the 3325 it gained would stay on its new ATK.
That’s a weird effect of temple of the kings as, in the manga, that was the battle city rules, only one spell and one trap could be placed on the field each turn, and temple of the kings allowed Odion to set 2 traps a turn
It's much like Winged Dragon of Ra's "quick attack" effect because in the manga, special summoned monsters cannot attack the same turn they are summoned under normal circumstances.
I kinda think it's funny that during both Marik Joey summons Gearfried He summons it against "Marik" at the start and actual Marik at the end of that one Kinda weird
I notice Joey being in the semi final and final round of his Battle City tournaments feels more like Joey's survival mode than to play actual Duel Monsters card game
The last mystery card was definitely Graceful Dice. It wasn't a trap so he had no inclination to set it, and it wasn't a monster because of course he would have set it. He got Graceful Dice with no monsters on field for it to be boosted by.
@@BmanTheChampma opinion, should've been Skull Dice. Would have made the comment about emotional damage become real when Odion summons Fake Ra and Joey knowing traps are useless against a god card

Lmao, I had just looked up yesterday for Odion summoning his fake copy of Ra and was disappointed in how little there actually was...which is when I also reminded myself of when you'd actually cover this one, especially with it being such a good duel other than the fact of it being the last of the four duels against the Gravekeepers in Battle City to cover, and would you look at that, here it finally is! Thank you for this, and keep up the great content!
I'm gonna say that last card Joey drew was Graceful Dice. Like an extra kick in the pants for deciding to use really weak monsters and adding garnets to his deck instead of literally any warriors with 800+ ATK (of which there are very, very many).
Makes you wonder how things would have went had Odion disobeyed and defeated Joey, perhaps just showing the fake card afterwards. Here, Marik probably maintains his sanity. Then youd have to wonder how well normal Marik would fair in his duels. There's a good chance he'd lose to Mai if he spends too long pretending to not have Ra in his deck as she only lost due to God Card tunnel vision, and he might lose anyway if his dueling is worse than Yami Mariks.
There's also the point all the way on Joey's 3rd turn where he could have played Giant Trunade first to see if any traps were activated, THEN summoned his monster. The only thing that summoning first does is expose hyahusa knight to trap-based removal
Yeah but TBF he was probably expecting something like Mirror Force rather then Judgement of Anubis, and after Judgement of Anubis was activated that would have just made Joe more worried as if Odion protected his Backrow from a card that returned them to the hand then at least one of those cards could have been something just as dangerous as mirror force If not more so! At that point he probably wouldn't have attacked even with Hayabusa Knight, at least not for a couple more turns.
I though that a couple times. Had he kept Hayabusa Knight, he wouldn't have taken a direct attack from one of the Embodimebts of Apophis, those sword-wielding snakes nearly wiped out his LP.
@Lexgnzlz he would have tooken less damage, but that wouldn't have mattered too much since by the end, Odions monster would have been strong enough to one-shot Joe anyways.
@@thekey0123 Unless he had saved Monster Reborn in order to combine it with Sword and Shield. Joey shouldn't have played Insect Queen, Jinzo was as strong as her with no other Insects in play, also it bricked Odion's Trap Cards, so Monster Reborn should have been kept in his hand in case Odion found a way to defeat it.
There's one more similarity though. If either Odion or Marik had tried their best against Joey (aka not trying to keep a cover/ torment him), he'd never have a chance to win either of these duels.
Neat analysis video! Man, the sheer number of unknown cards in this duel.... They really didn't want to design/choose more cards for Odion, I guess? Man, it's kinda funny that 2 of Joey's duels in Battle City ultimately came down to stamina.
I feel like another joey duel that would be a good duel analysis is his duel with rex in the Waking the Dragon Arc. Mainly because I noticed joey does a huge misplay with Panther Warrior
Consider why so many people have so many week monsters in their decks in the series. It's because there, you HAVE to either pull they cards from packs, will a prize card from a Duel, or have someone generous help you out. The individual card market seems to be really harsh here, as if the card economy is super tight.
I find Odion's gameplay interesting and really emphasize how DM era trap decks mindset, as you say, contains emotional damage. Side feedback too from your previous "what modern deck DM characters uses", Odion "indirectly" got support for Continuous trap decks with Qardan and Pharaonic Advent, so I'd say he would play trap monster + floodgate deck, with ace monster of Egyptian God Slime.
7:55 -It's fun you point this out with the Mai/Panic moment because she is acting as the one who just learned the lesson from him and accusing Yugi of messing up..but then in THIER duel she STILL hasn't learned her lesson since it is a bluff by Yugi that costs her the duel. She assumes his set card is a trap and focuses on destroying it over attacking. It's only then he reveals she would have won had she gone with her instincts and not second guessed. She also starts out by weoponizing phych out techniques, then being the victim of them..then thinking she is the expert ..then losing her big shot to them..she has a bit of a cycling character arch when it comes to emphasis on this aspect of the game in the first season.
I don't think it's what she ment and it's more she's talking from the fact she did the same thing to yugi but lost because sometimes 1 screw up can cost you the duel which it did since yugi bluffed
Let's be fair here Marik's plan was pretty risky and failed here, Since Odion plays a fake Rai the real Wing Dragon of Rai gets rightfully pissed off as a result... Well not only Joey won but Marik's evil self has been awaken.
This was an interesting duel. Thank you so much for analyzing it. A minor misplay that I don't think affected much, but Joey summoning his monster before activating Trunade to check if Odion had any disruptions resulted in a big minus for him that could've been avoided
Well, I agree, but he couldn't summon 3 monsters at once, so he could have tried Trunade and then summoned Tiny Guardian in Defense, that would have walled Odion as his Trap monsters only had 1600 and TG had 1800 defense
@@RodimusMinor1987 If Joe activated Giant Trunade any earlier Even if it didn't get negated Odion would have just set his other Traps again, and Joe didn't know what Odion had so it was better in his eye's to go for game rather then to just deal alot of damage.
@@RodimusMinor1987 Yeah it also would have made a huge difference if Judgement of Anubis worked like it's Irl counterpart like it does in later seasons.
It's always funny seeing people go "Joey should have beat Marik! He lost because plot armor!" when the same thing happened in reverse when he dueled Odion.
For Joey's mystery card three options, one for each category: Graceful/Angel Dice- pretty natural brick since he already lost the two main monsters to use it on. Gearfried the Lightning- would be ironic given it was very close to winning him the duel against Marik, but at the same time he couldn't have played it. Magical Arm Shield- neat card and effect, but he would have no means of activating it since you need to have a monster and your opponent needs to have two.
Joey would have won if he didn't summon Hayabusa Knight before using Giant Trunade. It can attack twice, so if he could have used it instead of Battle Warrior, he would have dealt 2400 + 1000x2+ 500 = 4900 damage. Hell, he wouldn't have needed Swordsman of Landstar because he could have dealt 4400 damage.
Probably Joey drew in his final turn Fortress Whale from Marko. He got that card from Marko and should use it. Would be funny :D And a good card as example for the duel
There’s a couple duels I’d like to see analyzed in this series. Those being Solomon Muto vs Joey Wheeler, the Exodia using Rare Hunter vs Yugi Muto, and Maximillion Pegasus vs Yugi Muto (this one can even be a double whammy with both the first encounter duel and the Duelist Kingdom Finals).
So if Odion tried to read the ancient Egyptian text on the fake Ra to further play up his role. Mai would have seen it had a requirement and wouldn't have tried to take it from Marik in their duel.
I don't think marik knows the ancient text being there's no evidence of his lesser half using until his inner hatred came back. Just like when the lesser and bakura tried to duel the darker half and wasn't aware of instant attack and point to point.
@@UnsilencedOutspokenTikTok He does not know the chant, however he should know about the text. The chant appears when the card is put on the field, the literal card text is added

Modern day retrain of Battle Warrior: Fierce Battle Warrior EARTH Level 3 ATK/ 700 DEF/ 1,000 [Warrior/Effect]: If this card is Normal or Special Summoned, you can target monsters, up to the number of warrior monsters on your field and in your GY: Switch the original ATK and DEF values of those targets as long as this card remains face-up on the field (monsters with no DEF value cannot be targeted). Once per turn (Quick Effect): Tribute 1 monster on either side of the field; This monster gains ATK equal to that monster’s Level/Rank/Link rating x300. You can banish this card from your GY: Shuffle up to 3 warrior monsters from your GY into your deck, then you can draw 1 card.
This has to be one of the worst duels of the franchise in retrospect. So many pass turns, a magical BS loss, Odion failing to see lethal, so many of Odion’s cards being mysterious/unknown, Joey bricking 2 turns in a row. Definitely one of the shows weakest entries in terms of writing imo
Do Yuma vs Nasch please. There was a point on the penultimate when Nasch could’ve won where he had Black Ray Lancer and Submersible Carrier Aero Shark. If he attacked with Aero Shark first and then Black Ray Lancer, Yuma with only 350 LP left and Utopia with 1600 ATK, Nasch would’ve dealt 500 damage to Yuma and won. What do you think? I think it’s a great duel to analyse and the best one of Zexal.
He couldn’t have won that way. At that point, Utopia had one overlay unit. Yuma would have to tank the hit with Aero Shark, but he still would’ve used Utopia’s ability to deflect Black Ray’s attack keeping him at 50 LP like what basically happened but in reverse order. Regardless, I absolutely agree for this duel to be analysed.
I think Zexal is avoided, and mainly for the better. Going over the possible plays in that series is an absolute nonsense, with *every single card* having a high school essay for an effect, multiple effects, and general "plotkai screw you, no my plotkai's stronger" bollocks being rampant. unless you count Marik vs Bakura
A good person working for the villain for personal reasons, always makes for a great character!
I find all the more fitting that that is the exact reason Joey figures out Odion is not Marik
The fact he played fair and square is the reason Joey suspected him.
Didnt the rare hunters overall win the locator cards for the 3 of them odion was just one helping to win some
Odion never held millennium item to begin with just a binding spell tatted on his face. He's just a highly skilled duelist.
One correct. In the Battle City rules in the manga, you can only use or set 1 spell and 1 trap per turn. Also, all spells are quick plays.
yeah NO it wasn't justified for MARIK
he could have just told Odion to show he had the Winged Dragon of Ra on the field AFTER the duel was over and tell Joey he chose not to use it in order to not reveal it effects to the rest of the duelist watching the duel
why did odion explicitly play temple in the field slot then? irl it's continuous but that anime duel it's a field. kinda like how magical hats in the anime is a spell, spellbinding circle is one at first but only the one time against kaiba's ghost, negate attack was also a spell early and only settled as a trap by season 4, copycat and time wizard are playable as monsters or spells, and shadow spell is a normal spell. besides temple of the kings the irl card didn't come out until the marik structure deck which came out i think a good couple of years into the gx or 5d's run so it was designed to be a field, but konami when printing it decided temple with its original pre-errata effect wasn't really searchable by terraforming as even back then field spells were just starting to pick up a bit of steam and they sidestepped that issue by saying it's continuous for irl.
@@tdarkhorse4 Please read the first line of my comment.
Joey won Insect Queen, but never added it to his deck in the manga. That's how it should have been in the anime too.
Joey was smart to only add Jinzo and Legendary Fisherman to his deck in the manga.

It's also been shown that both Mai and Joey should have beat Marik.
Especially Mai
While Marik toyed with Joey a bit, he didn’t with Mai and once Mai stole Ra, she practically won it she didn’t summon it
@@aceclover758 Whoa whoa, a _competent_ female character in Yu-Gi-Oh? Can't have that
I'm starting to notice how bad the quarterfinals were in the Battle City Tournament.
The, 4 way duel, the semi Finals, the 3rd place duel and the Final Duel were a lot more interesting than Round 1 of the Battle City Finals.
If Joey had played with a bit more courage and smarts I don’t think Odion would have stood a chance and he would still advance to the top four. But the other three quarter final matches, if both sides from each played a bit smarter it would still be a question mark.
when mai says that playing against traps can lead you to self-destruct she could also be referring to when she lost against yugi for that exact reason
Wasn’t her deck relying on the Mirror Wall trap back then? And Yugi nearly destroyed himself attacking into it repeatedly.
And she used another trap (Shadow of Eyes) to complement mirror wall.
They meant when Yugi bluffed her with Monster Recovery. She over-thought things and lost because of that.
I'd love to see that, that was an awesome bluff from yugi

If you look back at the duel, you’ll notice that not ONCE does Odion mention the Shadow Realm, which would both be a giveaway to the characters that he wasn’t Marek, but ALSO a giveaway to the VIEWERS that he wasn’t evil
Why would he mention something that doesn't exist?
What gave away Rishid was that he acted honourably and acknowledged Jonouchi as a duelist, which doesn't follow for Marik who previously used manipulation and treated people as disposable pawns.

15:00 the anime version of Graceful Dice needs a monster with 500 or less attack. But Battle Warrior has 700 with no effects. That's the confusing one.
In addition, stronger monsters are rare and expensive.
That’s why Kaiba is the only character who hasn’t BEWD.
reason Battle Warrior is still there because it was part of his winning combo against Bonez.
Yeah the manga definitely explains most of the mechanics in yugioh that seem like bs
Considering how Chaotic the activation of all spell, magic and traps can be in one single turn, this restriction doesn't seem like a bad idea right now.
The anime also did come first. So they probably saw it was missing info and fixed when writting the manga
@@viniribr No it doesn't for original YGO, Kaz has already set the rules in stone, you might be mistaken for latter YGO series where it flipped (which Kaz has very little input anyway)

His out could have simply been a burn card he kept from the time he was possessed by Marik.
@@MichaelisBLeeFinally! Someone else realizes that Marik used superpowers to beat Joey and not just a plot sword!

Mostly?
23:22 - Counterpoint, had Joey swung with Gearfried and Hayabusa full force at the start of the duel, Odion would’ve been left at 200 LP and would’ve been doomed if Joey ever got another opportunity to swing, period. Which Jinzo absolutely would’ve secured later on.
Every time Joey decides not to go for his typical all-out attack strategy, it backfires on him.
And both against Marik
Huh....damn, good catch
Gear fried I see as a monster that represents Joey, he starts off in the finals as a strong warrior, unsure of himself at first, but he's starting off strong to try and duel yugi in the finals, then against marik he summons gearfried on his final turn, as a true warrior ready to take down his enemy and fight his true opponent, unfortunately the warrior falls in battle, succumbing to his injuries from and intense duel
Good catch.

Marik's not a bad duelist but we see the moment he gets frazzled he comes to pieces... Rashid on the other hand keeps calm
now that i think of it,that wouldve basically been a yugi vs raphael...odion not wanting to cheat or use tricks, just playing fair and square
still wouldve lost,no one can beat destiny draw, but still, wouldve beemn cool
On top of that it's implied the Temples Protection Requires the Winged Dragon of Ra, so Joe might have won off that detail alone.
Anime is just bad. Manga Marik soloed everyone while having a good time doing it.
Marik's deck is literally just a worse version of Odion's. When you think of Marik, I personally think of his trap cards first.

9:20 in the anime Odion states that guardian of apophis can only be activated when he is attacked, so he can't activate them here.

That and Jaden vs Axel. I just rewatched because i found it interesting that Jaden was likely to lose the duel if Axel wasn’t forced to sell

@@TGSAnimeJob well done. 💯
"Times changed" - TGS Anime
Me: Yeah, and those were the best of days.
Fun fact: There are similar patterns between this duel and the one against Yami Marik, in terms of traps and being close to victory
But one moment to highlight, against Yami Marik, Joey in the sub hopes to draw his “giant trunade” (hurricane) card to clear Marik’s field to win
But he fails to draw it and it’s a very rare moment to hear a character wish for a card we know is in their deck but fail to draw it, that I wish happened a bit more often
I think with the anime version of Temple of the Kings, its effect would probably go like this:
"Both players can only set two cards per turn while this card is face-up on the field.
That makes alot of sense and it's Ra support
Love how graverobver says ‘use it as your hand’ like your hand becomes the card
21:09 They might be more Trap monsters. It would make sense if he had more than just 3 Trap monsters, but because he has Serket out he doesn’t really need them.
This is the predecessor of Team 5Ds VS Team Unicorn: Where the enemy clearly won the duel if not for someone screwing up.
Funny you say that because I'm reminded of yigioh R where Joey does the same thing to a girl by calling her a coward

5D's vs. Unicorn is still one of the worst, most insulting Duels because of how it ends, IMO.
I have the answer to your Serket question
Unless the monster’s effect is negated, a ??? stat is adopted as the current base stat. So that stat is carried over with Shield And Sword
I used a setup with Tyranno Infinity equipped with Bashing Shield (which boosts ATK by 1000), and Shield And Sword. Tyrrano Infinity’s effect ATK became its DEF, so its DEF became banished cards times 1000. However the boosted ATK via Bashing Shield carried over to its changed ATK. Since its original DEF was 0, its new ATK became 0 + 1000 due to Bashing shield.
To summarize: the altered base stat (white numbers) becomes the new DEF
That being said, Serket’s stats would depend on whether its ATK and DEF are being boosted or being changed.
"You duel with honor," Joey said to the floodgate player.
I kinda think it's funny that during both Marik Joey summons Gearfried
He summons it against "Marik" at the start and actual Marik at the end of that one
Kinda weird
That's a connection I never made until now...
It could have been a level 5 monster
@@BmanTheChampma opinion, should've been Skull Dice. Would have made the comment about emotional damage become real when Odion summons Fake Ra and Joey knowing traps are useless against a god card
It was very likely Gilford the Lightning, a card that had he received sooner would have won him the duel.
@@TaiDZero Not useless. They simply only work for one turn.
@@thewanderingmistnull2451 depends on the trap itself. As seen in the case of Kaiba duelin the mask duo originally where they attempted to use mirror force for obalisk to smash it n finish them off. But if im remebering correctly Kaiba also activated obalisk effect before attackin. I cant remember another time where one tried to use a trap aganist a god card though.
The battle city arc was one of the best arcs in yugioh
If you pause at 10:26 his Alligator Sword looks like a Pendulum monster! XD
It's ironic. Joey only won due to a technicality here. But only Marik beat Joey on a technicality.

Joey winning this duel because Odion passed out, then losing to Marik for the exact same reason is so ironic, and completely intentional. Lol
It's always funny seeing people go "Joey should have beat Marik! He lost because plot armor!" when the same thing happened in reverse when he dueled Odion.
For Joey's mystery card three options, one for each category:
Graceful/Angel Dice- pretty natural brick since he already lost the two main monsters to use it on.
I was thinking the same

This has to be one of the worst duels of the franchise in retrospect. So many pass turns, a magical BS loss, Odion failing to see lethal, so many of Odion’s cards being mysterious/unknown, Joey bricking 2 turns in a row. Definitely one of the shows weakest entries in terms of writing imo
At this point we need a "I draw a mysterious card!" T shirt.
