My head canon is that Kaiba's multi-spell card play amounts to him doing ridiculous quick math on how many monsters, spells and traps he's played so far vs what was left in the deck and how much damage he needed.
I think there's even more truth to this. I think it's been stated in lore that Kaiba basically knows which cards in his deck are which by feeling alone, so he can stack his deck in a specific order while shuffling and without looking at the cards. He also has a photographic memory, so he can memorise the exact order of his deck and recall it perfectly. If that all is true, then he means it wasn't just a calculated guess, he knew exactly which cards were next for him to draw, so he formed a winning strategy equipped with that knowledge at that very moment.
I always loved Kaiba's line when Siegfried checks his deck and freaks out on seeing three Blue-Eyes White Dragons: "By the look on your face I'm guessing my future's looking pretty good." More so amusing given pulling three Lv8 normal monsters in a row without an existing field/hand support is a death sentence.
@@kavinh10I'd say it shows yugiohs magic roots. In modern day yugioh this I'd horrendous and worthless. In mtg and classic yugioh this could be busted. The reason being your not just looking at your opponents top 3 your removing 1 and stacking the other 2 how you want. It's a very control oriented strategy that would've worked far better if Kaiba wasn't drawing 2 cards each turn.
@@jackehstil7945Yeah if opponent wasn't drawing two a turn that combo could potentially keep a card from ever reaching your hand. On top of the other effects. In old yu gi oh that's a ggs in alot of cases
That's actually a fair point, why wouldn't kaiba just use soul release on XYZ dragon cannon and bring it back instead of luster dragon? he still had 1 more card in his hand, he could have used that to delete brunhilde and leave poor sigfried with nowhere to run.
@@ShackleYTI think it depends on OCG/TCG rulings because of xyz dragon cannons effect meaning it is not 'correctly summoned' Xyz dragon cannon effect: 'This card can only be special Summoned from your extra deck by removing from play the above cards you control.' As it is not fusion summoned correctly to begin with it can not be targeted by dimsions fusion (same as when you send a card from your extra deck to the graveyard without 'correctly' summoning it.
@@dazzabarloola I don't really think that effect is on the card in the anime, or it's outright ignored because kaiba was able to use the dimension fusion on the Chaos Emperor Dragon
@ShackleYT nah, the effect for xyz dragon cannon is on the card in the anime. I may be wrong on this but from what I understand. Basically xyz dragon cannon is a bit of a messy card. Because you special summon it from the extra deck and don't fusion summon it that card was never properly Summoned first. This means it can not be summoned using dimension fusion. Chaos emperor dragon on the other hand can be Summoned because it was properly summoned the first time it can be Summoned back using dimension fusion. I'll also note that this may no longer be the case because of have changes since 2000 as the card has like 6 errata. But at the time the episode was made it could. Kinda no wonder it has so many errata.
Hands down my absolute favorite duel in the franchise, so much so that it single-handedly makes up for Kaiba's absence during the tournament. The trash talk was completely one-sided, Kaiba's link to Blue-Eyes was reinforced tremendously, Kaiba's final turn was executed savagely, and ultimately Kaiba gave the best public performance he has ever given. Kaiba was in absolute rare form.
Plus we actually got to see Zigfried again, as far as the plot is concerned this is the last time the arc's villain duels (usually an achievement reserved for Yugi). This duel also doubles as catharsis for Joey's defeat
One of my favorite duels in the series, I love the detail of Kaiba always using his duel disk even when providing the original duel monster stations for players to use
There’s a throwaway line when he duels “Pegasus” in the orichachlos arc in the Japanese version where he’s using it because he thinks “Pegasus” will cheat with the duel arena I think it’s a callback to where he thought his original duel disk system would have given him the advantage over pegasus because he didn’t know Pegasus’s millennium eye was what was reading his mind
@@TheKpa11 If recall, in the manga, Kaiba thought that Pegasus somehow had this uncanny ability to predict what others played due to seeing the other player of sorts. The duels were done in the holographic box he designed, at a table. So the duel disk served two functions, distance making it harder for Pegasus to read Kaiba, and also possibly the cards being projected obscured his face.
@@GenesicKaiser Yeah that’s how the Kaiba in the Japanese version explains but the way the cards cover him is just hilarious because it allows basic cheating to become so much easier instead because the cards are HUGE and you can see them. If Kaiba just trusted Pegasus wouldn’t resort to traditional cheating with that set up.
@@GenesicKaiserYup, which made so much sense when I finally read the manga and finally got why Kaiba made the beyblade duel disk. In the anime they were already just as far/if not farther away from eachother before he started forcing people to use the duel disks. It also makes sense in the manga with other scenes, like how Mokuba could still Yugi’s star chips after their duel when he’s right across the table; in the anime he jumps off his side of the duel arena, runs all the way to Yugi’s side and steals them from his platform without Yugi reacting😂😂like how?
Honestly I just straight up hated his original duel disks. Just the whole throwing them thing there being no slots for spells. Everything about them felt impractical.
They probably knew that Kiva wasn’t gonna have an epic duel to end his story, so they gave him the win against the main big bad. Also, I love how the filler arts in Yu-Gi-Oh really helped flesh Kaiba out as a character.
I believe that, due to game mechanics at the time, you cannot change a monster's battle position during the turn an effect does that already. I could be wrong, but that might be why Zigfried didn't do that.
That makes far more sense to begin with. There would be no purpose to the card switching a monster into Defense position for an effect if that effect didn't keep it in Defense position. It might as well not have that text.
That’s correct, because that’s how I learned to play the game. if you change the battle position by a card effect or your opponent does, you forfeit the chance to change it manually. that’s changed I believe, if you battled this turn you can’t change it manually.
This is untrue, cards like enemy controller that change the battle position of monsters do not stop you from simply changing them back, this is why Karakuri decks even function, as without this they would lose a large amount of steam required for the deck to be effective.
wasn't there a card for destiny hero dasher that let you draw one card when it changes its battle position (what happens after the attack)?. maybe it is more worded like that card. like "choose one monster on your field. when it changes its battle position, apply >effect x
For a Guess on Kaiba's mystery card I'm gonna go with Crush Card Virus, since at no point in this or the next turn would he have had a chance to activate it naturally (especially since he'd already used his Shrink). So it makes reasonable fodder for a card like Emergency Provisions.
I would also guess either Flute of summoning dragons or Polymverisation because 1. He didn’t have lord of dragons to use flute. 2. With polymverisation he couldn’t make any fusions and the only fusion monster he could’ve made that’s left in his deck was twin thunder dragon.
There's a slight animation error in Sigfried's life points at Kaiba's final turn. When the first 3000 atk Blue-eyes attacked the 2700 atk Brunnhilde, Sigfried's LP dropped from 3600 to 3000. But then it's fixed when the 2nd Blue-eyes attacked, dropping Sigfried's LP from 3300 to 3000.
Zigfried's deck prefers to win with OTKs or FTKs, the further he gets away from either, he has no choice but to use his deck destruction strategy, and protect his low powered valkyries with stall cards
Kinda a counterintuitive strategy, I draw a specific spell when my opponent has no big monsters or traps in play and go for an OTK, and if that fails, half my deck is irrelevant. I know it's the anime, but still. Also, banishing 1 card per turn? Considering it takes a specific 3 card combo, you'd think that the goddess cards would banish 10 cards a turn or something.
I hate how much this comment perfectly explains the play style of the Valkyries archetype, either one turn them with a mischief of the time goddess or try and stall to deck them out.
Funfact Valkyries names aren't names are just their order in German: Erste-First Zweitte- Second Dritte- Third Vierte- Fourth Funfte- Fifth Sechste- Sixth and also their order is inverse to their level being Erste a level 6 monster and Sechste a level 1 monster
More interesting fact, they're played in the order they appear in most of the operas they are characters of. Which is likely why they are even named that in the first place.
Didn’t expect to see this duel but Kaiba’s last turn is basically Yugi’s Blue Eye Ultimate Dragon play from Yugi vs Noah - not a criticism, I really like the similarity. Still waiting on Syrus vs Zane. I won’t stop - I’ll continue to wait, Sam. If not, there’s still Kaiba vs Alister, Mai vs Yami Marik or Joey vs Odion - 3 pretty decent DM duels.
I really want to see the analysis of the last 2, just so we can cover all the major duels in battle city, oh, or even the duel between yugi/kaiba vs lumis/umbra
18:33 I believe the mystery card he drew was Ring Of Desfense. Zigfried has never used burn in any of his duels and since Kaiba doesn't have Ring of Destruction, he can't do his combo and he needs the life points more now than half of a cool combo.
Those were my top 2 guesses for the mystery card. Ring of Defense because he doesn't have Ring of Destruction, or Ring of Destruction, because he's going to use Chaos Emperor Dragon to wipe out everything and just damage Zigfried.
That last turn made his fang of critias theme legendary with that Dimension Fusion into 5 Dragons. I play it when I’m about to do something awesome and my friends hate the song and me for it 😅
Yeah, but he got super lucky. Not only did Zigfried not draw a monster the previous turn when he had three chances to, but Kaiba drew the only card that could have won him the game.
Something to keep in mind gang; to Sigfried, this Duel honestly didn't mean anything. Sure, he was hamming it up(rather loudly I might add) but that was so Kaiba wouldn't check Leon (Von Schroeder) out. Remember in the Leon vs. Yugi duel right after this, Siegfried gives him the Hacked Golden Castle Card SPECIFICALLY because no one would suspect little Leon..... Beautiful Zanatos gambit by Siegfried here.
@@LucianDevine that's why I consider it a Xanatos Gambit. Either way, Sigfried would've won. Beats Kaiba in his own Theme Park? Win. Destroy Kaiba Corp. Computer System? Win. The only reason he lost was because little Leon managed to talk him down("the power of FRIENDSHIP!" BS they were stuffing down our throats)...
It’s still such a cool duel because it’s basically all about public humiliation and maintaining a strong public image as the face of Kaiba corp Kaiba pulls it out despite some odds stacked against him and it’s fun to root for him
It's more than a back-up plan than not meaning anything, Siegfrid did put his all in his duel because he wanted to beat Kaiba. But yes, having Leon ready to get a second chance and going unnoticed because Siegfrid deliberately put the spotlight on himself was next level. Too bad he underestimated the duelists they were up against.
To me one of the craziest cases of calculated planning with that final turn and my favorite of the original series. Legit cannot wait for littlekuriboh to get to this episode
Thank you for all the hard work you put into dissecting these duels! I love watching them all the moment they pop up and this was such a power play duel for Kaiba! Love it.
I went back and re watched the episode. It was definitely foreshadowing him showing the gold castle. He says "it's not over, not by a long shot" as he falls and shows the card... this was always one of my favorite episodes.
The odds on that are probably way better than you'd think assuming Kaiba was using the bare minimum 40 cards and that he'd already played a good chunk of that 40 he had a pretty decent chance of guessing what he'd draw
2:09 I personally think Mischeif of yeh time goddess has one of the most unique effects albeit it just basically essentially lets you go to a double battle phrase (I know it skips turns but it ends up around to another battle phrase)
Essentially yes but, like Zeigfried said, you get to skip effects that would trigger during certain phases. Example: if Psyframelord Omega effect was used in the turn someone activated Mischief then Omega would not be able to return because you skipped the phase it was supposed to return.
@@monkey_blu yeah I do admit I simplified the effect and yeah since it only works on Valkyrie monsters anyways (with realistically on “ride of the Valkyrie” being the only swarm card) you need the skip effect to get the second battle phrase. So I agree the effect is more complicated then I put
Fun fact about mischief of the time goddess is that it's implied to be the main reason why ygopro shut down due to the developers being unable to properly code such a weird effect into the program. This leading to the eventual creation of edopro
@@cloaking111 it wont work on the first turn. you explicity need to "end your battle phrase" before you can use the card to skip the turns. (on turn 1 you cant even declare a battle Phrase so you cant end it either). would be cool but nah. so going second (if you have the card) is the earliest you can use the card.
I find Kaiba's play more interesting than Yuma creating a new card to make Utopia clear the opponent board and otk or Yusaku getting the perfect link to outplay (yes, I like him, but too much plot armor)
Rewatching it, it's also interesting because it's not even that much of a comeback (and I will explain, but I mean it in a positive way). Soul Absorption and Emergency Provisions were tight to keep him in the duel, but otherwise Kaiba has a pretty good control through the whole duel: he has defensive plays to counter Siegfried's early aggression, gets a wall out that protects him through the majority of the duel, and keeps having answers ready. He only takes a risk with CED, but even that had overall not bad odds, and closes right after. It shows how good Kaiba is as a duelist, and that Siegfried didn't really stand a chance.
14:10 Siegfried feels and acts utterly confident after having activated his three goddess cards. Yet, he's clearly horrified at the sight of the three blue-eyes. I can still remember, this was such a cool scene.
2:17 If you listen closely you can hear “Ride of the Valkyries” playing in the background which also happens to play in the Sub version of this duel. He’s being canon to the anime as far as the music goes!
This was always my favorite duel of the entire show with Kaiba being my favorite character. The literal 200IQ play at the end always got me hyped as a kid lol
7:30 Flat Lv 4 only works on Level 4 monsters, not Level 4 or below, so he'd only be able to summon another Dritte Also fun fact: There is an animation error during the last turn with Zigfried's life points hitting 3000 twice when the 1st 2 Blue-Eyes attack
I remember when I first saw that Valkyrie deck for the first time, I really wanted to make Valkyries because I'm a huge Norse mythology nerd. But then years later and Konami finally makes them real, I find out that they are actually really bad. I still hold on to the cards because I do admire the art.
Can we appreciate the amount of math work the writers had to do to make kaiba win with 50 LP and for Ziegfried to have exactly 3000 LP so Blue-Eyes could finish him?
Ikr?? I always appreciate that in Yugioh but this duel especially has me always wondering how they did the math for all that to make it exactly match with all the life point manipulation in this duel
tbf, it does help that a lot of the life point manipulation was done with cards that didn't exist at the time, so it makes it a lot easier to make the totals exactly what they need it to be as some of those cards were only ever used in that particular duel. Still very satisfying either way though, i agree.@@tomato2517
The man who write the duels had difficulties in.vrains (making salamangreat in difficult situation IS hard) osiris/slifer vs obelisk was also one of thz most difficult duel to (re)write for him, this man is a hero
OMG this gives me high hopes that yugi vs leon is next. i remember seeing that duel as it aired and holy shit stromberg looked intimidating to overcome
@@CaptainB1994 not necessarily, just make the conditions "Activate only if you control a Valkyrie Monster(s)" or "You cannot summon the turn that card is Activated except Valkyrie Monsters" Busted for the Archetype but not game breaking for anything else.
I can't believe you just gloss past kaiba activating pot of greed and drawing 2 cards like that. that was absurd, I know he took some risks in this duel, but damn, that was insane.
That Golden Castle, if I remember the lore right, held a virus inside it that would've activated if it was played on a Kaiba Corp AR scanner like his Duel Disks. It was his evil scheme, one that would be explained thoroughly in the Tournament Finals featuring Yugi and Ziegfried's little brother.
It did, but as we found out later, Zigfried's plan was going to fail no matter what since he didn't take into account that there would be backup files. So there was no point in him being in the arc. Though him being that stupid fits the rest of his character, since based on how he was so shocked by Kaiba's 3 Blue Eyes White Dragons, he didn't bother studying Kaiba's deck before facing or was even aware of his signature monsters.
@@LucianDevine I prefer to just think of it as him being an idiot because Zigfried showed throughout the arc that he is not smart. Also because I don't like him, he had no reason to exist, and rather than just having the arc being about the heroes going through a breather tournament, it's about thwarting the plans of a villain whose actions only Kaiba has a stake in and his plans were going to fail no matter what.
@@LucianDevine This wasn't just him being a step behind, Zigfried didn't take into account something almost any business does. Plus Kaiba countering his deck gives the hint that Zigfried didn't bother studying Kaiba's deck before facing him.
The anime was struggling at this time and the error here is that the first one should have been 3,600 to 3,300. Thankfully, it is just a animation error and not an actual error like Zigfried's first duel. Because the anime used a different life point counter due to 4Kids' edits, this mistake ended up being corrected in the dub.
And another great duel from this arc. The best way for OG Kaiba to go out by using CED and having all three Blue Eye's White Dragon attacking his foe. It's glorious and along with all three Yugi Duels, Joey's two duels, and a few minor ones, these really show why this one of my favorite filler arcs of all time. Such glorious duels with fun new decks and strategies.
Honestly, in terms of the card Kaiba might have sent to the GY to use "Emergency Provisions", I think it could have been "Crush Card Virus", or maybe "Interdimensional Matter Transporter". Purely because they were the first that came to mind that - whilst useful in their own rights - wouldn't have helped Kaiba at that point in the duel against Zigfried, outside of being used as a cost for "Emergency Provisions".
I think another misplay by Zigfried was when he got rid of Luster Dragon #2 with his Goddess cards (15:14). That was the least threatening card out of the three for him, since Kaiba had no way of summoning it unless he tributed Blue-Eyes. It would have made a lot more sense to get rid of Shrink, especially since that saved Kaiba next turn.
You're right. In that scenario Kaiba would have had to discard Luster Dragon #2 and then played Cave Dragon, which addmitebly has 2000 Atk. He would have attacked with Blue-Eyes ,but Brunhilde would gain battle destruction immunity due its own effect for the rest of that turn, making Cave Dragon useless. Zigfried would then make the same play he does in the actual Duel, except now Kaiba doesn't have Shrink to defend himself, Kaiba's LP drops to 0 and he wins.
It is missplay but it is a missplay only because Ziegfried didn't know what he would have drawn. If he didn't draw the Sword card that gives 400 atk Kaiba would have had 50 Lp left even without Shrink and Pegasus wing is NOT en equip spell it is a one time spell so Ziegfried wouldn't have be able to beat Kaiba next turn and his Brunhild would have be wide open for 900 damage to come his way next turn and if he changes it to Def after that turn if Kaiba manages to summon Luster Dragon 2 then he would have destroyed Brunhild. Banishing Shrink would have be the better play sure but at the time Ziegfried didn't have game yet
By far one of the best duels played by sento. He had the best line of "theres nothing I cant afford" replenishing his LP then paying its cost for CED envoy of the end. This duel was unforgettable and was a perfect final turn with his blue eyes exactly 3000 LP.
It’s in Ziegfried’s best interest not to use magical arms, but that’s why this duel is so brilliant. It represents the difference in the two characters. Kaiba is willing to take the proper risks in the limelight to earn his success. Ziegfried works in the shadows, and resorts to scheming, but ultimately is always trying to cling on to the safety of blaming others for his failures. I’m butchering this but 22:12 is why I love this duel so much. That, and the last turn.
I think saying 5 spells cards are going to be used when his hand is empty is not taking proper risks. Assuming he had about 25 cards left in his deck and 2 cards (card of demise, and card of sanctity) in his deck that could give him the set of dominoes he needed to win. He had an 8% chance of successfully pulling this off. I think instead of saying he takes the proper risks a better evaluation would be he knows when to put it all on the line and his intuition and his trust in it usually gives him the edge. Whereas the Z man plays it too safe and loses because he doesn't take the steps he needs to before someone else does.
Ziegfried literally would have 100 f ing LP left had he not use it and that is way too risky. The spell card gives him 1000 Lp from the get go for free so it was obvious that he would have used it
@@DarkMagicianGirl0 There's one slight problem with that logic: Remember Kaiba's duel with Pegasus near the end of the 1st season? Pegasus thought to himself after Kaiba set aside his hand to stop Pegasus' cheating (which didn't work) that Kaiba, being a top duelist and having a very high intellect, very likely would've memorized his entire deck and determined which cards were where over the entirety of the duel. Pegasus deduced that he could just peer into Kaiba's mind, see every card in his deck due to Kaiba having his deck memorized, guess which cards he had yet to draw or play, and plan accordingly in order to win. It is very likely (but not absolutely certain) that Pegasus deduced correctly because he ultimately wins that duel. If Kaiba does have that kind of brain power (likely considering he's a child prodigy), then he could've kept track of which zone all of the cards in his deck were throughout the duel. Sure, there was still some luck involved, but if Pegasus' deduction was correct, then the chances of Kaiba pulling that combo off would've been higher than 8%. Kaiba likely would not have guessed that he would play 4 spell cards that turn if he didn't know that most of the cards in the remainder of his deck were Spell Cards. The chances were still slim, but not that slim. This is all speculation, and i could be way wrong, but it's likely that the above is what really happened.
@@DarkMagicianGirl0he said 4 magic cards. Also, he likely had 20 cards left in his deck. And if you were paying attention to which cards were played, most of them were monster cards, so while he’s using a little typical Shonen antihero yugioh luck, the claim isn’t as outlandish as it seems if you know his deck. Seeing card of demise, you’re drawing up to your 26th card, having majority monsters, it is conceivable that he still had some power spells left even beyond what was shown. Or maybe those were his last 5 and he’s just a badass. Who knows. Either way, while it might be a stretch, I’d say I’m still a fan of the symbolism.
The Kaiba Cup has many rough moments, but it gave us the two best duels in the original series with spectacular last turns (I hope you cover Yugi vs Leon too soon) that alone justify it. But Kaiba seeing Card of Demise and visualizing immediately the more convenient pattern is hard to match, not even Yusei at his best can reach that. It might be professional deformation, but the sheer mathematical precision of it is a thing of beauty. And as far as Kaiba goes, it also gives us some very good characterization, showing him actually putting his duty before his pride was good.
6:20 Well, given the time period in which this episode first aired, I reckon Valkyrie's Embrace in the anime would have had the wording, "When you switch a Valkyrie monster to defense position," meaning Siegfried likely had to manually switch one of his monsters to defense mode first before Embrace's effect would activate. Nowadays, card effects are extremely specific in their wording including official releases of classic anime cards like the Valkyrie's, meaning the battle position effect is part of the card cost and can be reversed, provided no further restrictions are stated.
It was likely something like this: "Target 1 Attack Position "Valkyrie" monster you control and 1 monster your opponent controls; you cannot change a monster's battle position for the rest of this turn after this card resolves, also change that monster you control to Defense Position, and if you do, banish that opponent's monster."
That duel was sad to this day I feel the pain ,but thankfully my heart was healed when I saw him again in duel links. I was happy he was the same Bruno everyone knows as he remembers everything that happened in the show too.
Never thought that I would see a video focusing on the filler arc that happened in between the Waking the Dragons Arc and the Dawn of the Duel Arc. The last time I recall seeing a video focusing on that arc was a video focusing on an analysis on Zigfried.
6:36 - I don't know much about Yu-Gi-Oh TCG but assuming the release version of the card is essentially the description in the anime, the card sounds quite specific. IF all monsters on your side of the field are "Valkyrie" type, take 1x "Valkyrie" monster that is currently in Attack mode and change it into Defense mode + banish effect on opponent. Nothing is said that you can change it back and fourth.
18:35 I think the discarded card was Ring of Defense. Since Zigfried doesn't use effect damage in this duel, and Kaiba never seemed to draw Ring of Destruction, it would make sense to discard Ring of Defense, since it's a dead draw in this duel.
I love how Zigfried used his Valkyrie combo to see the top 3 cards of Kaiba’s deck and absolutely crapped himself when he saw 3 Blue Eyes White Dragons 😃😃😃 Let’s all remember that Kaiba said he wouldn’t duel in his own tournament. This WASN’T a tournament match so technically Kaiba didn’t break his own rule 😃😃
That final turn for Kaiba was the best turn in Yu-Gi-Oh. Was such a big middle finger to Zigfried. Taking the life point and showing him how to pull off the business moves like a boss
I love how in the dub when Kaiba uses Chaos emperor dragons effect it’s the Exodia theme. Also I always wondered why Kaiba summoned Luster dragon during the last turn. Thank you for explaining that
Nibelung's ring has another nerf if it was used in today's time considering how many monsters can special summon themselves when put from the hand into the graveyard.
ok, so I'ma break down some theories I have for certain parts in this duel. Namely 2 major ones that being the 4-spell play Kaiba had and why Zigfried had the castle in his hand Kaiba's 4-Spell play: now knowing Kaiba's deck throughout his duels, this was a risky play since he cares alot about Beatdown and Deck Destruction so him naming 4 Spells just by seeing his "Life-Shaving Treasure" spell is a gamble for most people. HOWEVER this is Kaiba we are talking about and if anything he's prepared. We both know that both players in this duel handed the other their deck to shuffle to be sure there was no way to cheat with deck stacking, but Kaiba is known for being a genius so before he even arrives to duel Zigfried he probably not only fine tuned his deck to help deal with Zigfried's strategies (since seeing another person duel isn't banned during this time) as well as still having his powerful cards (which is why we see cards like De-fusion and Shrink) so it wouldn't be far off for him to have memorised his entire deck and calculate the odds of getting the 4 spells he needed when he saw Life-Shaving Treasure The Castle: Now this one is more headcanon than anything so bare with me, Zigfried COULD have had it in his deck but given how his deck runs I would doubt it, plus it was seen in his hand at the end of the duel. Now the Duel-Monster's era of Yugioh was filled with cheaters like Bandit Keith, Arcana, and in this case Zigfired. Seeing this is a stadium there has to be metal detectors in the entrances so it's possible he took a page from Bandit Keith's book and hid the Castle in one of his sleeves so if push comes to shove (like Kaiba preparing to do his BEUD+Defusion play), he would have an out to it
00:20 I love the facial expression here lol "Ha! You're too frightened to face me!" "..Huh? I said you were disqualified; I never said I wasn't going to *duel* you." *nervous sweating*
Something I like is the minor hint back to Duelist Kingdom. When Kaiba was dueling Pegasus and abandoned his hand to attempt to avoid the Millenium Eye, Pegasus comments that "a duelist of Kaiba's caibre has long since memorized his entire deck". Meaning Kaiba knows his cards so well he has a good idea of what he has left to play. This lends to his gamble with Magical Arms; He knows what cards are left in his deck and can more accurately guess what's left and how many would be Spell cards. It's a subtle detail, probably unintentional, but I enjoy it.
Yea, and it just makes sense. Ive seen people say “how did Kaiba know exactly how many spell cards he’d have?? BULLSHIT” And it’s like bro, even irl a good player can gauge what cards he has left, especially when you’ve used almost all your deck and the total amount of cards you have left is little.
@@tomato2517 Exactly. After playing for awhile and becoming familiar with your deck, you get a sense for what you have left to work with. No way someone like Kaiba doesn't know the ins and outs of his cards and is keeping track of his resources.
@@stripesmaccoonis9395 In order for Kaiba's guess to makes sense statistically (drawing spell reproduction and 1 extra spell), he would need to get rid of some if not all of the following : Different Dimension Dragon, Blade Knight, Axe Raider, Vors Raider, Paladin of White Dragon, Kaiser Glider, Versago, Kaiser sea horse, Judge man. All of which were seen in the previous arc. I highly doubt Kaiba gets rid of these because his deck would become extremely unbalanced. Kaiba played 29 cards in this duel, so you still have these 9 monsters + a combination of Polymerization, crush card, ring of destruction, ritual of white dragon, flute of summoning dragon to fill in the blanks.
@th0r0shvener52 See? Proves if you can keep track of this, so can he. That's why I never saw this seen as something he pulled from nowhere; More a declaration of confidence.
@@stripesmaccoonis9395 It's certainly a lot of confidence. I buy the fact that he can predict 1 + 3 spells since Kaiba is a genius of the game. But Spell reproduction itself is a bit of a gamble, unless of course he has another copy of it or Magical Stone Excavation.
@@TheKpa11 There's a video of the final turn that uses a really bad translation where Blue-Eyes is called Green Eyes. And it's still great to watch just because that turn's so awesome.

Can’t wait to have a review of the Dual that likely has the most total “things” happen, Zarc vs Dimension Dualists. Decent chance to be over an hour long.
Watching the duel, I always felt that Kaiba was on the ropes, but I didn't realize he had such a good floodgate with that XYZ Dragon Cannon. Was kind of foolish for both of them to kill their 3 card spell combo and XYZ floodgate.
18:20 I like the idea that Kaiba's mystery card was "Deck Destruction Virus". 1) Kaiba had no monsters in had or in grave to use it with. 2) Shrink just got used so that combo isn't worth going for now 3) Ziegfried's monsters were weaker anyway, using it probably wouldn't get rid of much.
I wanted to see if Joey was gonna beat Ziegfred. It was a shame that it was Joey’s last duel and it was just to make a rival for Kaiba look intimidating
It's especially annoying since, despite Zigfried being this arc's main antagonist, he's completely unnecessary, along with anything connected to him. What the arc should have done is use Zigfried as a stepping stone for Joey, then let him face Yugi at the end of the tournament since the two hadn't dueled on screen since Duelist Kingdom.
Joey is best used as the character that comes up short because it’s more relatable than a Yugi. I actually think Joey should’ve lost more in the beginning to get more fans behind him.
@@fatalsniper3413 I wish he lost to Mai, but wouldn't be out of the tournament for it. Maybe have him face Rex first, and then only wager 1 star chip against Mai.
Finally, I’ve been waiting for this forever. I always tried to analyze this duel and couldn’t figure out Kaiba’s draws. Thanks for explaining the ring thing. Something that annoys me though is that Kaiba uses the duel disk.
This was a fun duel. And Kaiba's doing great if you include the Kaiba-man duel from earlier! Great comeback and a nice (potential) animation error at the end there. If only he drew that card! Instead got a satisfying Blue Eyes victory!
Kaiba’s usage of Chaos Emperor Dragon’s effect was a huge risk! If only Zigfried draws a monster card after Chao Emperor Dragon’s effect, Zigfried would’ve won!
@@mystery8820 Adrian played like a goddamn demon that duel, I have to give it to him. The topdecking was actually ridiculous though, four pieces in his first hand for God's sake. Yubel spamming hand destruction was filthy, actually nightmarish for an Exodia runner
While Zigfried was a bit preemptive with his mystical space typhoon, I give him a slight pass for a particular reason: His own deck banishes cards too. If he left MST face-down and it was somehow stopped from destroying soul absorption, he'd be FAR worse off with Kaiba regaining lifepoints with each card Zigfried banished.
@ 5:44 Because TGS Anime... It's a Primary Rule. Where, when a monster's B Position is changed (by the effect of something), you yourself cannot switch it afterwards unless by another card effect. It's 'locked'. So for ex, Say I had a Set 'Zero Grav.' , then I use it on my next turn & everybody's monsters get their BP's changed to Def Mode, now I can't just swap mine back to Atk in my turn so I can hit u b/c my guys' positions (I guess u could say) were 'forced' into Defense. They're to remain that way until my next turn. THEN I can manually change their positions again.
Question: Could Zigfried have chosen Shrink for the 2nd of the three Goddess combo, leaving Kaiba to draw Cave Dragon and Luster Dragon #2, which he would have to discard one of them? Cave Dragon has could not be normal summoned because of its effect and Luster Dragon #2 can only be summoned by tributing Blue Eyes which does not help Kaiba in anyway. Then next turn Zigfried could have gone for game with what he would have drawn. Is this right or did I miss something?
I've always assumed the Anime has the ruling where if a monsters battle mode is changed (by the player or otherwise) then the monster cannot change its battle mode again for that turn(pretty much just making everything act like the player had switched the position themselves.)
2:09 Most of them are not named after actual Valkyries from Norse Mythology but after German numbers because they're more based on the song Ride of The Valkyries composed by a German dude. The exceptions being Brunhilde, named after an actual Valkyrie, Nothung also named Gram was used by Sigurd to kill Fafnir, Erda also named Jord is one of Odin's wives and the mother of Thor, Skuld, Urd and Verdande are the norn sisters, Nibelung is a german translation of a surname of 2 brothers from norse mythology mentioned in a german song made by the same dude who made Ride of The Valkyries, Bifrost is the bridge to Asgard, Fricka is a name for both the goddesses Frigg and Freya, Loge is another name for Loki and Woten is another name for Odin. Pegasus and Gryphon are creatures from Greek mythology, Swan Maiden is a European folktale,Golden Apple of Enlightement could be the golden apples from Norse Mythology that grant the gods their immortality and also the forbidden fruit of knowledge from the garden of Eden
So, just like Atem, Kaiba probably cheats.@@bigbangtheory0000

@@kavinh10I'd say it shows yugiohs magic roots. In modern day yugioh this I'd horrendous and worthless. In mtg and classic yugioh this could be busted.
The reason being your not just looking at your opponents top 3 your removing 1 and stacking the other 2 how you want. It's a very control oriented strategy that would've worked far better if Kaiba wasn't drawing 2 cards each turn.

Kaiba activating Soul Release just to banish 1 monster with it is such a power move
That's actually a fair point, why wouldn't kaiba just use soul release on XYZ dragon cannon and bring it back instead of luster dragon? he still had 1 more card in his hand, he could have used that to delete brunhilde and leave poor sigfried with nowhere to run.
@@ShackleYT For BM I suppose
@@ShackleYTI think it depends on OCG/TCG rulings because of xyz dragon cannons effect meaning it is not 'correctly summoned'
Xyz dragon cannon effect:
'This card can only be special Summoned from your extra deck by removing from play the above cards you control.'
As it is not fusion summoned correctly to begin with it can not be targeted by dimsions fusion (same as when you send a card from your extra deck to the graveyard without 'correctly' summoning it.
Wouldn't say in the whole franchise, but in the original series for sure. And the Kaiba Cup's final is a close second.
he locked in
Also makes up for the awful animation.
One of my favorite duels in the series, I love the detail of Kaiba always using his duel disk even when providing the original duel monster stations for players to use
There’s a throwaway line when he duels “Pegasus” in the orichachlos arc in the Japanese version where he’s using it because he thinks “Pegasus” will cheat with the duel arena
I think it’s a callback to where he thought his original duel disk system would have given him the advantage over pegasus because he didn’t know Pegasus’s millennium eye was what was reading his mind
@@GenesicKaiser
Yeah that’s how the Kaiba in the Japanese version explains but the way the cards cover him is just hilarious because it allows basic cheating to become so much easier instead because the cards are HUGE and you can see them.
The final play is basically Kaiba's own Berserker Soul moment, and I love it so much
It even plays the same music in the Japanese dub, that being Fang of Critias
Kaiba: BERSERKER SOUL !

Duro, Magic Cardo!
@@Caleb_XIIIdestiny heroes came after tho :0
For a Guess on Kaiba's mystery card I'm gonna go with Crush Card Virus, since at no point in this or the next turn would he have had a chance to activate it naturally (especially since he'd already used his Shrink). So it makes reasonable fodder for a card like Emergency Provisions.
I would also guess either Flute of summoning dragons or Polymverisation because
1. He didn’t have lord of dragons to use flute.
2. With polymverisation he couldn’t make any fusions and the only fusion monster he could’ve made that’s left in his deck was twin thunder dragon.
Could also be Quick Attack on top of all these guesses.

EXCELLENT YUGIOH DUEL MONSTERS 😉👍
Zigfried's deck prefers to win with OTKs or FTKs, the further he gets away from either, he has no choice but to use his deck destruction strategy, and protect his low powered valkyries with stall cards
Sounds like the man himself.

Erste-First
Zweitte- Second
Dritte- Third

Yeah, but he got super lucky. Not only did Zigfried not draw a monster the previous turn when he had three chances to, but Kaiba drew the only card that could have won him the game.
Kaiba's last turn here and Yugi's last turn against Strings in Battle City are probably my favourite comebacks in the series.
True, but if he gets to publicly humiliate Kaiba by beating him at his own tournament in his own theme park, it's a bonus.
@@LucianDevine that's why I consider it a Xanatos Gambit. Either way, Sigfried would've won. Beats Kaiba in his own Theme Park? Win. Destroy Kaiba Corp. Computer System? Win. It’s still such a cool duel because it’s basically all about public humiliation and maintaining a strong public image as the face of Kaiba corp
Kaiba pulls it out despite some odds stacked against him and it’s fun to root for him

It's more than a back-up plan than not meaning anything, Siegfrid did put his all in his duel because he wanted to beat Kaiba. Kaiba predicting that he’ll draw 4 Magic Card is still one of the most coolest moments in the series✨
Kaiba predicted that he''ll play 4 Magic Cards (Card of Demise including). So basically the gamble was 3/5 drawn of cards to be spells.
The odds on that are probably way better than you'd think assuming Kaiba was using the bare minimum 40 cards and that he'd already played a good chunk of that 40 he had a pretty decent chance of guessing what he'd draw
For once, he had faith.

9:10, so kaiba is, as magic players say, hellbent (Hellbend is an ability that triggers if the player has no cards on hand)
Arguably, this duel has the most iconic comeback of the series or at least in Duel Monsters.
Siegfried: ha I am winning
Blue eyes x3: smells like cheater in here
Well the ring makes it so Kaiba doesn’t brick
The coolest part is that Kaiba doesn't even actually do anything, it's just his aura showing Siegfrid he picked the wrong opponent.

24:56 you gotta love how Zigfreid went from 3300 life points to 3000 two times in a row between attacks
He could have chained it to Graceful Charity.
So Sigfreid basically got to play 3 or 4 turns without the opponant getting any responses?
Man really is ahead of his time for the 2020-2023 meta.
By far one of the best duels played by sento. He had the best line of "theres nothing I cant afford" replenishing his LP then paying its cost for CED envoy of the end. This duel was unforgettable and was a perfect final turn with his blue eyes exactly 3000 LP.
Except Zigfried actually has 2700 LP left. The animators used the 3300->3000 LP change twice during the previous two attacks.
This is one of my favorite duels of the series. The final turn from Kaiba is just perfect
WOOT one of my favorite duels, which honestly solidified Kaiba as one of my favorites in Yugioh!
It was likely something like this:
"Target 1 Attack Position "Valkyrie" monster you control and 1 monster your opponent controls; you cannot change a monster's battle position for the rest of this turn after this card resolves, also change that monster you control to Defense Position, and if you do, banish that opponent's monster."
You should cover Yusei and Antinomy's duels next!
I second this!! I’d love Playmaker and Revolvers duels too!
YES❤
All Yusei duels.
Cause Yusei cannot win without ass pulls, his opponents playing badly, or anime rules screwing over opponents
That duel was sad to this day I feel the pain ,but thankfully my heart was healed when I saw him again in duel links. I was happy he was the same Bruno everyone knows as he remembers everything that happened in the show too.
Yes!
Putting nobleman of crossout in your deck in the anime has to be the most useless move in history
Never thought that I would see a video focusing on the filler arc that happened in between the Waking the Dragons Arc and the Dawn of the Duel Arc. The last time I recall seeing a video focusing on that arc was a video focusing on an analysis on Zigfried.
Waking the Dragon's was filler as well
@@Godzilla00X But Waking the Dragons Arc is still a better arc than this tournament arc.
14:34 the way Kaiba shows that he drew 2 cards, and then choose to reveal one of them to discard is just SO COOL xD
I love how Zigfried used his Valkyrie combo to see the top 3 cards of Kaiba’s deck and absolutely crapped himself when he saw 3 Blue Eyes White Dragons 😃😃😃
Let’s all remember that Kaiba said he wouldn’t duel in his own tournament. This WASN’T a tournament match so technically Kaiba didn’t break his own rule 😃😃
It wasn't Kaiba's hand, but his top 3 of deck
@@oxcare5Thank you for pointing it out and now edited 😃
That final turn for Kaiba was the best turn in Yu-Gi-Oh.
Was such a big middle finger to Zigfried. Taking the life point and showing him how to pull off the business moves like a boss
Is it a better turn than the last turn of Yugi vs Noah?
@@Hoffanheim For me? By a long shot. No power of friendship bull.
Just a great calculated strategy.
YES! I've been wanting this one for a long time! Best Kaiba duel!
And after watching it, it's so satisfying to have finally gotten it!
Saaame. My favorite duel in the series and it was the one I wanted i see him cover
I love how in the dub when Kaiba uses Chaos emperor dragons effect it’s the Exodia theme. Also I always wondered why Kaiba summoned Luster dragon during the last turn. Thank you for explaining that
Kaiba didn’t even need to summon Luster Dragon lol it’d be the same result
@@thefonzpart well that’s actually not true. As he explained, dimension fusion requires the players to summon as many as possible
@@robertrupp7231 ohh! You’re right! I was thinking he banished it off Soul Release. What a genius duel
Kaiba's final turn was just so fantastic. Then to top it off his burn was red hot. You could cook a roast with that burn.
5:58 The card almost certainly had the effect that you couldn't switch the battle position of a monster until your next turn.
Nibelung's ring has another nerf if it was used in today's time considering how many monsters can special summon themselves when put from the hand into the graveyard.
ok, so I'ma break down some theories I have for certain parts in this duel. Namely 2 major ones that being the 4-spell play Kaiba had and why Zigfried had the castle in his hand
Kaiba's 4-Spell play: now knowing Kaiba's deck throughout his duels, this was a risky play since he cares alot about Beatdown and Deck Destruction so him naming 4 Spells just by seeing his "Life-Shaving Treasure" spell is a gamble for most people. HOWEVER this is Kaiba we are talking about and if anything he's prepared. We both know that both players in this duel handed the other their deck to shuffle to be sure there was no way to cheat with deck stacking, but Kaiba is known for being a genius so before he even arrives to duel Zigfried he probably not only fine tuned his deck to help deal with Zigfried's strategies (since seeing another person duel isn't banned during this time) as well as still having his powerful cards (which is why we see cards like De-fusion and Shrink) so it wouldn't be far off for him to have memorised his entire deck and calculate the odds of getting the 4 spells he needed when he saw Life-Shaving Treasure
The Castle: Now this one is more headcanon than anything so bare with me, Zigfried COULD have had it in his deck but given how his deck runs I would doubt it, plus it was seen in his hand at the end of the duel. Now the Duel-Monster's era of Yugioh was filled with cheaters like Bandit Keith, Arcana, and in this case Zigfired. Seeing this is a stadium there has to be metal detectors in the entrances so it's possible he took a page from Bandit Keith's book and hid the Castle in one of his sleeves so if push comes to shove (like Kaiba preparing to do his BEUD+Defusion play), he would have an out to it
I wonder will you cover the Yugi Vs Leon where that golden castle card is played? I hope so I like watching these duel reviews you do
Thank you! I loved the outcome of this duel with Kaiba predicting 4 magic cards and using his dragons to defeat Zeifried.
The finale is really great, especially noteworthy given how it's an anime original arc.
00:20
I love the facial expression here lol
"Ha! You're too frightened to face me!"
"..Huh? I said you were disqualified; I never said I wasn't going to *duel* you."
*nervous sweating*
12:02 to be fair most players in the OG Yugioh anime rarely used MST as a quick play spell card. So at least Zigfiend is consistent with the times 😅
BULLSHIT”
And it’s like bro, even irl a good player can gauge what cards he has left, especially when you’ve used almost all your deck and the total amount of cards you have left is little.
I believe the card Kaiba set for E Provisions was Flute of Summoning Dragons if he still uses his Lord of D. combo, or Polymerization.
...nice little detail I noticed in the background: the song Ride of The Valkeries started playing when Sam mentions the spell card of the same name
It does in the Japanese version of the anime, as well.
Damn, Green Eyes White Dragon really destroyed the firing shot.
Green eyes?
@@TheKpa11 There's a video of the final turn that uses a really bad translation where Blue-Eyes is called Green Eyes. And it's still great to watch just because that turn's so awesome.
@@JzanderN I know that video! There's also the hong kong subtitles!
Green Eyes Colourblind Dragon
YEEEEESSSSSSSSS! I've been wanting this one for sooooo long! Thank you! I have actually reversed engineered Joey vs. Espa Roba and would LOVE to see your take on it to see if I did well! Love your work!
Can’t wait to have a review of the Dual that likely has the most total “things” happen, Zarc vs Dimension Dualists. Decent chance to be over an hour long.
Probably one of the best duel ending wins ever. The look on Atems face at the end is priceless lol
Kaiba's last turn was one of most intelligent moves of the whole series. I abdolutely love this combo
You need to close out the Oricalcos arc with Kaiba's duel against Alister.
I wanted to see if Joey was gonna beat Ziegfred. It was a shame that it was Joey’s last duel and it was just to make a rival for Kaiba look intimidating
At the very least Joey gave him a good fight, so at least they didn’t make him look weak to hype Ziegfried
Maybe have him face Rex first, and then only wager 1 star chip against Mai.
well its a shame TGS Anime isn't aware of that duel. according to his anime duelist tier list video, he doesn't think Joey dueled in season 5 at all.
2:15 Playing the Valkery song while talking about a Valkery deck? Nice.
Finally, I’ve been waiting for this forever. I always tried to analyze this duel and couldn’t figure out Kaiba’s draws. Thanks for explaining the ring thing. Something that annoys me though is that Kaiba uses the duel disk.
1:46 where did you get that image of a quick play spell negate attack? Its a counter trap last I checked.
This was a fun duel. And Kaiba's doing great if you include the Kaiba-man duel from earlier!
Great comeback and a nice (potential) animation error at the end there. If only he drew that card! Instead got a satisfying Blue Eyes victory!
Sam, I appreciate you using Ride of the Valkyries as a background music during the Ride of the Valkyries card are played.
I love these videos. Could you do one for Yusei vs Primo? 🙏
That final turn should be a Yu-Gi-Oh puzzle for Duel links, no doubts
Kaiba’s usage of Chaos Emperor Dragon’s effect was a huge risk! If only Zigfried draws a monster card after Chao Emperor Dragon’s effect, Zigfried would’ve won!
Expetialy because he could just get rid of the ring and free xyz and destroy his monster then attack
Before the nerf/errata, it was basically just used for facilitating the Yata-Lock, to close out games or for OTKs.
Neat analysis video! Thanks for uploading! Looking forward to more like this from you!

All-villain duels are great… depending on matchup, sometimes you root for the main antagonist to win.
Carly V Divine is one of them.
@@mystery8820 Also the first on screen duel of Zone, poor Aporia can't catch a break.
The ending sequence was pure disrespect and possibly my favorite Kaiba moment
While Zigfried was a bit preemptive with his mystical space typhoon, I give him a slight pass for a particular reason: His own deck banishes cards too. If he left MST face-down and it was somehow stopped from destroying soul absorption, he'd be FAR worse off with Kaiba regaining lifepoints with each card Zigfried banished.
Ever since I found this series, I've waited for this duel to be covered. It's a favorite, and you certainly didn't disappoint!
5:48 I like to think anime only effect “the monster cannot switch its battle position till next turn” is probably added
@ 5:44
Because TGS Anime...
Unironically my favourite anime-original Duel. ❤
Been requesting this. Has some amazing kaiba moments
You are right but at the time Ziegfried didn't know that he would have draw the Sword equip so he didn't know he had game
So happy to see this Duel covered, just for how clutch that final turn was
I've always assumed the Anime has the ruling where if a monsters battle mode is changed (by the player or otherwise) then the monster cannot change its battle mode again for that turn(pretty much just making everything act like the player had switched the position themselves.)
