      To stop jugular bleeding, give the person bleeding cranial bludgeoning, apply a generous heat, add dough and there you have a perfectly fine meat pie.

    Just bought my first straight razor from Art of Shaving and finished scraping off my beard. It is definitely NOT as easy as this video or Skyfall makes it look! Just completed my first ever straight razor shave. Although I only did 1 with-the-grain pass, it was one of the best shaves I've ever had.
    Not only did I get almost no razor burn (so little I almost went without aftershave), I actually felt really comfortable and relaxed, despite the fact I was scraping a potential murder weapon across my face.
    Also, I can't help but feel like a complete badass knowing I just shaved with, as Bill puts it, something that looks like a torture device.

    • @geof7530
      @geof7530 6 років тому +10

      that is a hanging strop, it is a piece of fine leather, with a piece of fine canvas or linen on the other side. A strop is used to smooth, and and realign the blade. Because a straight razor is super thin thinner than even fine kitchen knives, it requires frequent honing or polishing to remove the rough edges.
      Before you begin shaving you should strop your blade, a good starting point is 20 passes on the linen side first, then 40 passes on the leather side.
      always strop your razor spine (non bladed side) first as running it the other way can damage your razor edge possibly requiring you to resharpen/hone your razor, and will cut into the strop.
      run it down the length of the strop and roll it on the spine and run it back to strop the other side.
      And that's it

  • @markdayoc3907

    I started with Double Edge Safety Razors. I took a liking to it instantly. After a year I was drawn to try Straight Razors. While visiting Slazlburg Austria I passed a shop with a number of Straight Razors displayed in the store front window. They were beautiful. Ended up buying a Dovo Prima Klan and mailed it home. Allow 30-45 minutes to shave. After about 10 shaves you'll start getting the hang of it and improve in your skills. Take your time; It's an art so enjoy it! Well worth it just for the experience..

      How does a man shave his head with a straight razor?

    • @davidh5573
      @davidh5573 9 років тому +2

      Andres Rodriguez Guapacha I used a straight to shave my head after I stopped using the cartridges and before I went to the vintage safety because it was quicker before work. But it is not that hard as you would think. The key is finding the direction of the hair growth on the different parts of your head and making sure to go with the grain for the first pass.

    • @AndresRodriguezGuapacha
      @AndresRodriguezGuapacha 9 років тому +1

      I never thought it could be possible, at least not oneself.... but it seems to need steady hands! hehehe.... I will buy a straight razor but I am not sure when will I try to do a headshave by myself.
      Thanks for the answers!

    • @davidh5573
      @davidh5573 9 років тому +1

      Andres Rodriguez Guapacha The funny thing is that I have had more nicks(nothing major) with my safety than my straight. The one thing you have to realize is that straights tend to be less sharp and less flexible because they are not as thin as DE blades or modern cartridge blades but they don't have a safety bar so as long as you place the blade with the correct angle before you take a shaving stroke you will be ok and true you do need a steady hand but don't sell yourself short. Let me know when you pull the plug on one!

    I changed to a straight razor a month ago or so and its the best thing i ever did. I have a beard so all I do is edge and shape it so the straight razor was best investment ever. Sharp sharp lines and its incredibly fulfilling to shave in such a manly fashion. A lot easier than you first think but only if you're careful and take time learning it as you start using it.

  • @junkequation
    @junkequation Рік тому +2

    I've used a straight razor for 15 years. Yea, I have a beard, but I clean up my neck line and cheeks once or twice a week. The shaves were pretty bad at first. I wasn't good at keeping it super sharp, and I'd frequently nick myself.
    But now, i can get it out, lather up, strop and shave pretty quick. The shave is good, and I never get irritation. I always had razor bumps when I used a modern razor. I've saved a lot of money on razor blades, much more than the initial straight razor investment. It's really worth learning to do.

    Your video has inspired me to try my own hand at straight razor shaving, appreciating both the natural simplicity, the zen of the ritual, and ultimately the more consistently clean shave that arises........and yet I must admit that I'm in no hurry to shuck out $150 for a flat piece of metal on a pivot, no matter how spiffy. I understand such is an investment over always buying terrible disposal razor blades, however for someone such as myself who has never tried straight razor shaving, but does not want to go "balls in" without knowing for sure it will end up being my preferred method, nor wishes to buy a $20 worthless item that immediately puts me off the whole idea, I admit I don't know where to go from here.
    I was hoping that perhaps, for both myself and others, you could also include a link to a second price-option straight razor that is still of basic quality but won't break the bank of any respectable gent looking to first try his hand at the art?

I use a safety razor to tackle that now and can handle that tool quite well, but thinking of upgrading to a straight razor, so thought I'd look up how to do it before buying one. Cause yeah, I like the history behind them, and I'm a sucker for cool things from the past too. And I just have to learn how to use a straight razor before I get rid of my facial hair for good with laser. The video is hilarious! I can totally relate to Bill there a bit.

    As a newby to the world of straight razors, this was a start but now that I’ve been doing it a couple months, it’s far from complete unless you’re not interested in a close shave. Best advise, take your time, watch the angle and it’s not a squeegee. Soft strokes. A good hollow ground razor that has been honed and stopped. You’ll probably go through a few shave soaps before you find one you like.
