    Its easy when you have the right tools (and there are many much less expensive than the shimano ones, yet they still work great) and i actually dont know why so many people make a fuss about the pressfit ones. never had a problem and i also didn´t need an absurd amount of force to press them out on all frames i worked on.

      Without taking shell size, tire clearance and chain stay length into account, definitely an English threaded BB (bsa, gxp).

    Great video! Installing my first PF BB into a new carbon frame - should there be the occasional creak along the as your getting close? Had around 15mm left to go. Thanks.

    • @ridesofjapan
      @ridesofjapan  4 роки тому +2

      A small creak can occur, as long as it doesn’t sound like cracking you should be fine. Carbon frames have tendencies to be out of tolerance it seams. If you pressing in a shimano bb86 cup you should be fine since The plastic cups seem to handle these tolerance issues better.
      If you’re unsure though, take the bike to a professional mechanic.

    • @ridesofjapan
      @ridesofjapan  6 років тому

      Thanks! In my experience, FP BBs har been fine without major problems as long as the install is made with proper tools and a proper clean of the BB shell before installation. Keeping up the bike maintenance (as in cleaning the bike regularly) should also help it working smoothly. All BB's will eventually wear out and FP ones are definitely the most cumbersome to change.

    I find your videos really helpful! I brought a BBT9 - bottom bracket and crank arm tool (HollowTech II) and now realise I don't need it as I require a Shimano Tl-bb12 Installation Tool 160mm For Press-fit Bb to remove the Bttom bracket and Shiamno BB press tool? I've slightly new to this and limited budget aha. If anyone can help with recommendations and advice I would really appreciate it.

    • @ridesofjapan

      Ben Wilson this is a cheaper removal tool than the official Shimano one (the bb90 version fits 24mm bb’s)
      amzn.to/2OKYZcH
      There loads of cheap press tools as well, the cheapest way might be to just by the bearing drifts and get a rod and nuts and washers from you local hardware store.
      These drifts are universal and should fit all bb standards: amzn.to/2DGECMw

      Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately I don’t have the canyon anymore. I did change my battery when I had it. Basically to install it you need to remove the bottom bracket... witch is a proper pain in the ***. Just Removing the battery though, you can actually get it out at the headtube, however all the di2 cables would have to come as well... so not very practical unless you are just stripping down the frame.

      Yes, once you remove the two screws on the downtube you can easily pull it out trough the hole underneath the BB shell.

    @ridesofjapan I need your Help:
    My current bikes have BSA and I love it. It's not perfekt but cheap and easy to replace the bearings!
    1. trackbike Dura Ace (these bearings are so cheap for dura-ace)
    2. other trackbike ceramicspeed
    3. MTB sram dub
    4. cx sram gxp
    The problem is that my roadbike is a speci allez sprint and comes with BB30.
    It's my nice weather bike but I still ride in the rain sometimes as it rains a lot here in Switzerland.
    After every single ride in the rain it's noisy and I have to bring it to a bikeshop as I'm not realy confident with hammering and pressing metalbearings in a metalframe. This is a bad solution for me and I can imagine the frame does't realy like the bb30 change to often neither.
    Would a BB30 to BSA adapter (cannondale/fsa/sram) be a good solution or do you recomend going for a BB30 with beather seals (kogel has crossseals for example). I would prefere to convert the frame to BSA but I know a general rule is to build bikes with as few adapters as possible.
    Thank you a lot in advance for helping and keep on with your videos.
    ianis

    • @ridesofjapan
      @ridesofjapan  5 років тому

      Ianis Caratti you shouldn’t be forced to change bb bearing that often in the first place I think 🤔, but I reckon the easiest way would be to get a thread-together style conversion BB, something like this wheelsmfg.com/bottom-brackets/bb30-outboard/bb30-to-outboard-bottom-bracket-for-24mm-cranks-shimano-black.html
      I have a video installing a similar solution from ua-cam.com/video/FhZVubz0Xt0/v-deo.html

      Rides of Japan i like this idea but my crank spindle is 30mm
      I checked wheelmfg bbb kcnc praxis works even chris king only makes bb30 bearings for 24mm cranks??
      Not sure if I had to replace the bearing or if the sand was "just" between the adapters/spacers but anyway it is a mess and a lot of maintenance
      this is the conversionkit
      r2-bike.com/CANNONDALE-Adapter-BB30-zu-BSA-45g

    • @ridesofjapan
      @ridesofjapan  5 років тому

      Ianis Caratti so you’re keeping the 30mm cranks?
      BSA is 24mm so you can’t install a BSA conversion adapter and still use your 30mm crank. ( if it’s not a true bb30 crank There could technically be an option out there but It would not help you in the durability department as the bearing would have to be smaller.
      If the crank is a true BB30 crank then you can not use anything else than a BB30/PF30 Bottom bracket. If the cranks are wide enough for 86mm bb shells and your frame is true BB30 you and install a bb30 > 386evo bottom bracket that should be available in “tread together” version.

    • @ianiscaratti4924

      Rides of Japan that's new to me but bsa and 30mm works actualy check the links

      r2-bike.com/HOPE-Innenlager-BSA-68-73-83-100-120-mm-fuer-30-mm-Welle
      r2-bike.com/WHEELS-MFG-Innenlager-BB30-BSA
      1. if you can run bb30 cranks on bsa and bb30/pf30 frames why the gxp standart?
      2.if the 30mm cranks fit any frame then why create the new dub system if 50% of the old ones had the same benefits already?
      3. maby sram and other mainstreambrands just want to sell more but why is chris king pushing the t47 standart as threaded solution for every spindle if bsa already is a threaded solution for every spindle!
      I'm realy confused right now as you can tell...

      @@ianiscaratti4924 It's a total jungle I know!
      So the links you posted is for 30mm cranks in BSA frames, so that means your frame has a BSA (threaded) bottom bracket shell?
      Sorry, I took for granted that you frame was a BB30 frame and you where using BB30 cranks. To start with, let's establish exactly what BB shell and what cranks you have :) Brand and model.

      It’s is call anti seize It use on a metal to metal surface to prevent it from binding i don’t think it is necessary in this cause since the BB is of plastic/nylon. In this case I think the paste he use is a silicone grease it Is also use on car caliper guide pin it can with-stand any climate condition and does not get hard. But I don’t know the reason why you need it Maybe for easy installation and removal.

      Dean Grove I think those homemade presses are one reason people have so much creaking problems with Pressfit BB’s.
      At least try to get the “press adapters” that goes in the bearings, those are crucial to getting them in straight.
      Something like these: amzn.to/2GyAdNs
      The “rod” however, pretty much any cheap thing from the hardware store should work.

    My shimano BB86(BB9241B) bottom bracket is marked with an L and R. I would have guessed L=left=non-drive side, and R=right=drive-side. That would mean the long half goes in drive side, the short half goes in non-drive side. But your video has it reversed. You inserted the short half into drive side. Am I mis-interpreting the video or this L/R thing?

    Surprised there is no torque spec for tightening the new BB. Without torque spec, obtaining correct bearing preload is uncertain. I also know, however, the torque spec depends on the type of lubricant you use.

    I'm still surprised in this day that someone doesn't have a BB remover that doesn't involve using a mallet and scarying the living daylights out of every bike owner

      Rixter haha! Agree, I’ve seen a few extractor tools for bb30 that almost work like a reverse press, but they are far and few between.

    I just re-watched this as it was promoted during the viewing of Hambini's latest video. Looks like he has a BB extractor that does involve and smashing (or wailing)

    You never preload those bearings before adding the crank arm...

      What? The bearing preload is done with the cap that is installed after putting on the crank arm.

    Good luck getting that centre spacer lined upmas you push in the bearings. 9 times out of 10 it wont align. Its a poor design. Other BBs have two spacers that overlap together.

    In general, the SM-BB72-41 of the shimano is unthinkable! The bearing shells are very small and tighten when the bearing is mounted. The seals also generate a lot of friction. It is difficult (impossible) to achieve alignment between the two parts, especially with the instrument in the video. The grease is not suitable for the conditions of rotation (high load and low speed). It's just made to take your money!
