    Thanks for bring that to views awareness! That is correct (Red to Red, Black to Black), I guess I am lucky, never even thought about using the Green since RED strictly speaking is (+) Power while other colors although measured with 12VDC that can be source to other devices... risky to tap in those colored wires without knowing exactly what's sourced to... Voltage spike and current fluctuation can damage sensitive devices.

    I’ve been a Chevrolet tech for the past 10+ years I haven’t seen anyone bring a c8 with this problem yet but if I was presented with one with this issue I’d most definitely not cover that under warranty, I’d remove that radar detector before bringing it to the dealership

    Great topic/video! I've held off on wiring my 360C to the mirror in my C8 because of these reported issues with the driver's side mirror. I just ran the power cord down to the 12v plug under the glove box. The power cord used to really bother me, but I guess I became used to it. I think I'll keep it there. Honestly, the rearview mirror-tap issue is still a little concerning, even if tapping red to red, and black to black is the "fix". I really appreciate the topic. Thank you!

      I love my R3 and will soon enough be using it in my C3 Vette. Sweet icon btw, I'm also a big Pink Floyd fan! I still want to find officers willing to laser test cars like Corvettes to figure out where they get a reading and find ways to negate that! I still feel like the vettes are pretty tricky to use LIDAR on. Thoughts?

    Just had the mirror tap show up for the C8 I've got shipping out shortly, so good to have this info.
    The launch electrical issue was likely more due to Chevy's overall generic harness approach to certain things not having enough power to cover all the features available on the C8.

    Wait people arent wiring black to black and red to red? I thought the confusion of wiring only came up when you have mismatched wires. I thought it was pretty straight forward when you have matching colors? Especially such mainstream colors as black and red.

    • @VortexRadar
      @VortexRadar  2 роки тому +1

      Not every car is like that. Sometimes you use yellow, brown, green, etc. You’d think it would always be red and black though, for sure.

    so let me get this straight.. red to red, black to black should be common sense.... if you plug the ground into the mirror data cable instead you brick it...im shocked!!! does the instructions actually telling people to plug the ground into the grey data cable or what????

      Yeah kinda confused how people could mess the wiring up.

    • @straightpipediesel
      @straightpipediesel 2 роки тому +2

      It's not that simple. The colors on my car are power=violet/white, power ground=black/white, mirror ground=black/yellow, mirror signal=yellow/white. Violet is switched power throughout the whole thing, red is unswitched power. However, if you use black/yellow instead of black/white, you'll get this issue.

  • @jasonbrindamour903

    I found that in my Ford, the upper "dome" lights are always power on (until vehicle goes to sleep). The negative side is what the CPU in the car uses to dim off the lights so I used a different known ground lead for the negative. I just wired my R3 in from that hot lead. It's ALWAYS a good idea to NEVER use a safety power circuit like airbags or seat sensor leads to tap into. There are places to find local straight ground and power along the headliner areas. I think the safest is the light circuit power. However, schematics may be changing since my 2011 truck with all the new LEDs on the interiors...I would certainly find a schematic to locate a safe place. Your dealer may even be willing to help out with at least the schems.

    Have you heard of any issues with the mirror tap affecting the driving sensors on the vehicle, like adaptive cruise control or lane assist? I drive a 2023 C43 AMG and I was buying my Uniden from Best Buy. I had to buy a USB - USB-C and USB-RJ11 cable for it to work in my car (I only have USB-C outlets). I spoke to the guys in the Car Audio Department, and they said they wouldn't do a mirror tap because it could throw everything off and have to be recalibrated. I also don't trust anything anyone working at Best Buy has to say ( no offense if anyone reading this works there). I spoke with the Merc Dealership to see what they have to say about it and i'm waiting on their response, but I was just curious if you or anyone has heard anything about that.

    Today I tried to put the mirrortap on my 2022 C8 Corvette. Got the wires right but then could not put the cover back on as they stuck out too far for the cover to go back on. Tried to re-orientate the black and red taps but they come flat, not pointed, and it was impossible to get them inserted.
    An option is that there is a cigarette lighter plug under the glove box. You can simply run the cable from the lighter socket to the windshield.
    I will never understand WHY GM DID NOT put a nice tap on the rear view mirror. All that $$$ but they can't put one in.

    I went to have the Valentine g1s2 installed, bought the cable and mount from blendmount ..both places I went either refused to tap into the mirror or to warrant the installation if I insisted. I chose to have it run the the fuse box. They couldn’t find the wire they needed behind the glove box so had to run it to the fuse box behind the waterfall. There he found a cable that cut power when the car was turned off as proven by the voltmeter. When we started the car it threw a warning which turned out to be due to the installer unplugging the cable he was tapping. After clearing the code all was well. Everything works as is should. I do have a question about what android phone you suggest for the jbv1 app. I can’t seem to find much under 229 for the pixel 6a which is too expensive. Any ideas?

    In the odd chance someone can help me here - I have a 22 Camaro SS and I tried to buy a tap kit to slot into the airbag light harness up where the onstar unit is located. However, I read the 22 Camaro SS doesn't supply enough power to do this anymore. Uniden R7 is the unit I'm using. I've read the only way, is to now run a cable from the fuse box in the engine bay or the truck, since the camaro doesn't have in the cabin. Any other suggestions? Posted on a couple forums without luck.

    Looking at this and knowing what I know of wiring in cars. Doesn’t matter, the fault lies with the car maker if you can cause this sort of damage as both LIN and CAN (and other functional networks like FLEX, Ethernet, etc ) should have a offline state for that specific brand of the network if they get pulled up or down beyond a fairly tight threshold.
    My car, older volvo wagon.. I had a few com bus issues back when I had a bad alternator locking up the regulator and sending low current 12V straight signal over LIN which caused my car to for 1/8th if a second believe all the doors where open and all seats were occupied by no one though believed occupied was unbuckled. Also sometimes get it freaking out about BLIS being in a limited state.. luckily for me no damage has occurred…

    • @Honeypot-x9s
      @Honeypot-x9s 2 роки тому

      @@uclajd literally every single network within a car is designed to be able to sustain dead shorting and full battery voltage clamping without causing damage. This is the basic specification every network within a car not only sets but claims to exceed in a range of ways.
      This means is someone plugs in a device say a radar detector that consumes a mild amount of current maybe 1-2 amps at most so enough to pull a network down but not enough to trip circuit protections. You wire that into the wiring from interior mirror which often has a 3rd wire that’s a communication bus attached and say put that mild 1-2 amp radar detector load on the communication bus thinking that’s battery power after a very quick probe with a multi meters and seeing power. Well According to the network’s own specifications it shouldn’t be causing any damage.
      I guess counter argument is that we seen car makers violate their own specifications countless times so why expect their networking standards to be any different… And uhm. Yep you are completely right/correct. I have had a headlight control module (yea these exist now) go bad once and it took my tailgate offline so I couldn’t unlock it or lift it. Couldn’t pop it from remote or the button on the dash. And unlock button didn’t have the tailgate lock position changing. Checking wiring diagrams and cross referencing I still have no idea as the POT (great name for a tail gate module) and HCM connect as they share not a single wire and appear to be on separate rings. But as verification, replacing the HCM (Headlight Control Module) fixed my tailgate. And yea that means they violated their own specifications….

  • @Blue84Stang
    @Blue84Stang 2 роки тому +1

    I....uh.... So, let me see if I've got this straight..... The C8 Corvette's wiring was so crap that it had to be completely re-engineered before it even left the factory, because it couldn't support the car's functionality.... They fixed that.... And people buying it are incapable of something as stupidly simple as Red->Red & Black->Black and causing damage to said vehicle because their canbus has no under/over voltage protection.
    Nope... I got nothing..... *smdh* fools and money, I tell ya....
