It is amazing how Mr. Osborne remembers this like it was yesterday!

Having been very fortunate to have known Coach Tenopir, Coach Darlington, Coach Mac and of course the "Red Head" as some called him Coach Osborne I can testify that the offense that was run was always evolving as well. What this group of men did in my opinion should have a much larger place in the History of College Football.

      Absolutely 100% agree Randy!
Think about it, the “Red Head” was considered by many to be the “passing guru” of college football in the early/mid 1970s (Jerry Tagge’s words, not ours).
But after a number of heartbreaking losses against the likes of JC Watts and Thomas Lott at OU, Osborne heads south to Fort Worth and beats out Coach Switzer for the services of Turner Gill, thus evolving the offense to triple option.
He did the same defensively too, switching to the same aggressive 4-3 that Miami and Florida St were beating them with in the Orange Bowls.
An amazing head coach with a loyal staff who cared deeply about Nebraska and this football program.
      GBR!

Coach Osborne going from T formation ball to I formation and more passing was star wars in the late 60s and early 70s compared to his contemporaries. He had NFL teams coming to learn the Nebraska offense because it was very successful for its time. Then Coach kept the I formation but went to more of a power option game as opposed to the triple option wishbone at Oklahoma he was influenced by. He kept the I formation because it had a feature back and was a superior passing formation.
The I he ran was a balanced set that usually featured two backs two receivers and a tight end. The fullback dive was always a called play and he showed a fake on power option before going to kill the linebacker or safety. The power option was about 30 percent of the offense, handoffs were 30 percent and passing was 30 percent. He was very balanced in his play calling.
In the 90s he ran the Spread Option and Urban Meyer took it later and made it famous with Tebow. The 97 Nebraska team ran spread option well before its time.

Audibling at the line of scrimmage seems like it's becoming a lost art. It drives me crazy when the whole offense stops mid-cadence and looks to the sideline for the audible.
QUESTION: Has football become too micro-managed by the coaches?

Outstanding point Jeff. Coach Osborne has been quoted saying the same thing. It drives him nuts to see an offense hustle up to the LOS, stop and then turn to look at the sideline.
We had Tommie Frazier on a couple months back. He talked about how much they would audible on the field. And as TO said, 90% or so of the time, they usually made the same call he would have as a coach.
      Great coaching and smart QBs.

Nebraska was the least populated state in the country to host a P5 conference school for all 42 years that Devaney/Osborne/Solich coached…yet NU was by far the winningest program in the country during that timespan. Incredible really.

Coach mentioned 41/49 fish run play how are those the opposite ways when 1 is off center and 9 hole is wide outside.

Osborne’s offense had the holes go from 1-9 across the line.
