Overthrowing the Status Quo - What Gurren Lagann Says About Leadership

  • For a hype show that's constantly upping the power level and stakes, let's take a look at what those who wield power tell us about what Gurren Lagann values in society and leadership.
Side Note: I mixed pronunciations of "Lagann" and several other terms throughout because I'm honestly not sure which is the correct one. So sorry in advance if I've offended your sensibilities!

I think one of the more interesting features of the series is how physical developments of the story recapitulate personal ones (or vice versa). This is played out very explicitly in "spiral power" but also in more subtle ways. For instance, Kamina's original idea of "combining characters" precedes Simon having to take on and absorb the role that he played for other people. Another example: Viral's fundamental belief in equality makes him a worthy opponent to Kamina/Simon, while all others complacent in their superiority are unworthy opponents.
Mostly unrelated, I also think it is beautiful how "drill that will pierce the heavens" takes on a double meaning in episode 26, where they destroy each character's own personal "heaven".

What's also beautiful about this, Simon immediately hands over the core drill after he realises he doesn't want to/can't move forward anymore, because he knows that that's not what a leader should be like.

holy crap. This is my favourite anime for the last ten years since I first saw it, and it bothers me when people say it's empty or mindless and not at all complex, because there's so much to it. And as many times as I've seen it, I still never realized some of the things you point out here, especially about the three leaders in the first cour, yet it's so obvious when you point it out

I've tried to show it to friends and they just wouldn't complete it, calling it boring, lame or ordinary... I just don't get it! I, for one, am not someone who would watch action or mindless stuff, but Gurren Lagann is the best anime I have seen! I think it's a simple anime, but embodies the strength and growth of the human spirit.

    • @HaxeRain

Gurren lagann is simple, simple on the surface, but as shown by many, it embodies tons and tons of meaning behind it, which makes me love the hell out of the show, if one takes notice, things dont click too much the first time one sees the show, but as one watches it again and again, one is able to see more and more of the subtle tones, since most people gets distracted on the action scenes, i found much meaning in every speech after i gave it more thought rather than only seeing the battle sequence with an epic speech like the first time

@@cricketknowall IKR. I recommend it to my friends and family who like anime all the time and it just irritates me when they say it's uninteresting. They're so used to action pact, fast paced bullshit that they think anything that works on character dynamic and development is boring. Gurren Lagann touched my spirit more than any show I've ever seen and I wished more anime fans or people in general would give it a chance. I don't even like Mecha anime but Gurren Lagann is an exception.

I thought about committing suicide and stabbing my neck because I can’t find one person who hates Gurren Lagann. All I want to have is just one person who supports why I don’t like the series. I’m depressed and I don’t want to live anymore. I see no value in my own life.

Rossiu was redeemed the moment i saw him look for privacy to cry his guts out. It showed me he was genuinely troubled by sentencing his brother to death. (i say brother as i view the entire Dai-crew as family)
This is one of the best shows ever. Closer the end it goes into some very unexpected deep concepts and quantum entanglement. It is also the first piece of media where the death of a certain character still bothers me.
The main theme of evolution has actually influenced my life for the better.
I find it to be mindboggling how i've missed this title for over a decade after its release. I forgot where i was going with this post cuz i suddenly feel the need to watch the show again!

Mister SatisfieD 満足 Yeah, some people say that part is boring, but it really shows Rossiu is doing all this stuff because it's what he thinks would be the right decision, but he feels terrible for it
This is shown further later as he almost shoots himself, until Semon (hehe dub) gives him the Kamina fist

The Kamina fist, i almost cried at that moment as it also shows Simon's maturity.
To be honest, i didn't make a big deal outta Kamina at first cuz i was so used to the anime magic of characters magically surviving the greatest horrors. I mean, he was the main character right? Or so i thought :(
THis show does a great job going through emotional rollercoasters. Me hating on Rossiu only to feel guilty i hated on him, lol

For me he always seemed a prick but he was redeemed later, after crying about it. To me he was still in his righteous illusion at that point, detached from reality. Not so much his fault but his teachings as a child. Still didn't mean I liked him, especially when he used one of the sisters as a suicide bomber to threaten Simon. I do believe he redeemed himself after the fusion with the escape ship though. It seemed like he looked at his world and understood that he was wrong and owned up to it. To me that is someone becoming better than they thought even if they were humbled
The Kamina fist defo made it clear to him

    • @user-uv5ld3cx5t

Rossiu would have been seen as a cold but mostly reasonable leader for his actions in other franchise where things are more grounded. While it was true that in the end none of that was necessary and his choices would not have saved anyone, it is also because Simon could literally do the impossible to the point of launching the gigantic Mugaan into the end of space time thereby nullifying the scenario imposed on them, one that is well beyond any hope of actually solving without resorting to Simon's godlike power.

How fitting to use leadership as one of the talking points for a show that embodies the burning shounen spirit so many become inspired by to do more with their lives and achieve greatness; with Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann cranking that dial all the way up to 11 (AND EVEN FURTHER BEYOND!!!) it truly stands atop with its feet firmly planted into several mechs varying in size, scale, and power and acts as a shining beacon of not just what anime can be, but what YOU can be. It fully embraces its ridiculous, over-the-top, hyperbolic nature and out of it presents themes of power, leadership, duality, individualism, etc etc and as a result becomes something so inspiring, so thematically and emotionally resonant, that it reaches out and drills its -fighting spirit- spiral power into your very core, surging through every atom and DNA strand in your body, making its mark upon you as something transcendental because it just screams legendary and hits everywhere it counts.

Gurren Lagann isn't my favorite anime (though close), but it's probably the most important anime to me. I saw it at an extremely low point in my life. A pit of despair, into which I had fallen down into time and time again, each time never quite making it even halfway out.
It's considered 'corny' to say a work of art changed you, but I could never deny that TTGL shook the ground by which I stood and forced me to continue attempting to seize the path ahead of me. It gave me another push, something that nobody around me was able to do.

Excellent and thoughtful video. I love analysis of TTGL, since everyone just thinks about it, and discusses it, as 'dumb fun'. Even the fandom itself. They talk a lot about Kamina, and his worldview and how it characterizes the story, such that I didn't even really know about the later arcs like Simon rising up. The episodes about Rossiu and Adai Village were some of my favorite bits of the entire show, so hey.

At the end of the day, he was pulled back from the brink (almost literally, in more than one way), by someone with a personal, individual connection to him that could show him the error of his ways and refuse to hold a grudge despite absolute justification to do so.

This whole thing about democratic majority is all very well (although if you know anything about mob rule that can be one side effect of it), but my problem with Rossiu and the situation he sticks himself in (as I outlined in the hour long diatribe I just got done making on my channel (shameless plug btw)) is that I don't think he DOES have trust with the people when push comes to shove he tried to incinerate his one lifeline in Simon, and no one past that point in the general public would want him in power when the truth comes to light. It would be the equivalent of being a Brexiteer and trying to assassinate Nigel Farage for it.
Oh, and by the end of the main series we learn that he's been prez for 20 years so to say that Kamina city democratically elected him is to say Putin was democratically elected. Whether you're left or right on the political spectrum, you should know what I'm on about.

Othe than his distrust and unwillingnss to convinc simon and th team and share what he knows , and that getting him to bad places, he is great and th deviols advocate they need. And once he realized that, he is best suited with his knack or bureaucracy.
People change, and its made clea rossiu changes too after the sense knocking fist to not ony see him as that but to grow too.

Not really, uit hates putting that before actually working honest with people, but rossiu is shown as right when he dos work honest with people and isnt shady. The show dosnt hate him, only if he is shady and selfish and acting out of fear.

    • @tacothursdays6546

Lordgenome maintained his status quo by using his armies of mechs to keep everyone pinned underground. The 1 million human population was a maximum limit for the anti spirals.
Humans couldn't possibly reach 1 million when everyone is forced to live in confined underground villages and anyone on the surface is murdered

I only disagree about democracy being the ideal choice in that universe. What happened there wasn't that. Democracy is a system where a minority chooses a leader (40% towards a single candidate and 60% shared between other three is a minority victory. And a voting between only two candidates is an artificial majority count, as some, if not most, of those who are voting would rather vote on another candidate) and then force the rest to accept that person as their leader as well. In TTGL Kamina and Simon are followed because their peers WANT to follow them. No one is being forced, no one is voting. They just see the example and follow them.
Indeed, that is TTGL's ideal leadership. And that's not democracy, that's voluntary association.

Gurren Lagan at its heart is nothing more than a bad joke. For over 20 episodes we were bombarded with constant utterances of "Do the impossible!" "Kick reason to the curb!" And then the final episode comes around and the show says, "Just kidding you have to accept everything that's handed to you no matter what the circumstances." Also, though the Gurren Lagann fans can justify it or use whatever apologist rhetoric they like, it doesn't change the fact that Simon had the power to save Nia and he chose to let her die. There's nothing noble or heroic about an act like that.

    • @battlecry6953
      @battlecry6953 3 роки тому +1

Nia's death and Simone's decision to not bring her back actually elevates the themes of GL imo. I interpret it as a blend of the two major philosophies present in the show, movement and stagnation. Simone will never stop moving forward but he now understands the huge risk and responsibility that comes with using spiral power. Bringing Nia and Kamina and Kittan back would not only be a huge step backwards for human growth, but it's exactly the kind of reckless use of spiral energy that would tear apart the universe as the anti-spirals have predicted. By letting Nia rest, Simone was balancing the needs of the individual (himself) with the collective will of the universe, something Kamina wouldn't be able to do because his philosophy is fundamentally flawed. I seriously recommend giving the show another chance with an open mind.

And Lord Genom is fascism because he belive that one race is suprieror then the other and that you can maintein peace with fear and terror. Thats just my thoughts on that subject.

What a tripe of a video, that's almost 9 minutes of you trying to massage your points to fit with Gurren Lagann. You can make these points fit with literally any of your typical shonen anime. I'm really sick with how everybody and their grandmothers now have an essay (anime, movies, games, etc.) channel. Anybody with a decent speaking & editing skill can just make garbage essays, produce a video, and suddenly be an expert.

While I haven't watch the video or this anime. I agree with you on the trend of youtube "experts", there are way too many people trying to be super intellectuals just cause they know how to make a enjoyable video. Unfortunately that's just how the internet is, I know I got fooled as well.

TheKaiwind yeah, I know right. The first few video-essay youtubers are frankly interesting and have great content. But like any other trends, people are going to jump on thr bandwagon. And with the youtube format, where you have to constantly pump out content, you end up with garbage like this. Make-up some bullshit argument, critique or fan-theory, edit some footage, and put a clickbaity title + thumbnail, Voila! People are just gobbling it up.

Mate, you got a bit emotional and illogical here. When did this guy claim to be an expert? Or most of the video makers of this genre, even?
All in all this is a healthy trend, and even the worst examples inside of it require a lot more mental energy than the vine meme shit we have around here. I'm certainly not going to discourage one of the few kinds of videos that make both makers and watchers use their heads, even if the result isn't always that great, as with anything that lots of people try to do.
      Criticism is fine, though.

Yes, this clearly represents the ideals in Dragon Ball Z.
Man if this type of content borthers you express it like you are now. This show however does need it as the others told you, it's messages and meaning do go over a VAST majority of peoples heads. Hell its own fandom views it that way and that is an extreme disservice to the work. Also no, what is said in this video does not represent every other S anime. It's not even an exaggeration, just a lie. I don't get how this type of content would get under your skin to began with, but it just comes across as you hating anyone who can catch these subtle messages and trying to share it with others.
If this shit really borthers you this much, break it down. Take the argument apart little by little, show and prove to everyone that there way of thinking is flawed. Prove to everyone that there is a plain above. Thus you can imporve the world and decrease the injustice caused by such a pseudo intelligence. Don't stop until you've pierced the stubborn skulls of the fake smarties and destroy the ceiling that is held over everyones head as the light from truth illuminates the darkness that engulfed quality content. Because thats how you roll, and soon no one will ever question you. If any dumbass shall try bring you down with there Cleary wrong points you let them know that Edwin Xu of no Shits given shall prevail, so who the hell do they think they are? Your comment is the comment that creates the change.
