    Hey all, thanks for watching! I'm super happy to return to the strategy genre, and hope to continue highlighting great strategic / tactical moments in the future. Feel free to let me know some of your favorite scenes that you'd like to see broken down either individually or in clusters like this.

      Great job with this showcase.
      Do Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor and detail the mental breakdown of the most impactful moments of each arc.
      Each arc has these moments that are completely mind-boggling but full of strategic moments. Many topics you bring up in this video are just icing on the cake in Kaiji. This show deserves so much more attention and could see a 3rd season if the spinoff does well this season.

      Pretty much the entirety of Girls und Panzer would be great to see covered like this! Specifically the match with Kuromorimine in the last few episodes - the plan there is very interesting and I like how the individual teams have their personalities and quirks integrated into it.

    Rule 1: Information
    R 1a: All relevant information the strategy is created under must be given or inferable.
    R 1b: If the strategist is not the POV character, any and all information may be withheld.
    Rule 2: Objective
    R 2a: An objective must be stated, regardless if it is the true objective.
    R 2b: Motivations do not need to be stated or match the stated objective.
    Rule 3: Luck
    R 3: Luck needs to be acknowledged.

    I'd add that loss makes a winning strategy all the more satisfying. Nothing is better than a plan coming together, but if it ALWAYS comes together, we're much less inclined to be impressed. Part of the reason L is such a cool character, is that he is allowed to be legitimately smarter than Light regardless of the fact that all the disadvantages. His death makes him so much cooler because Light had to essentially cheat in order to win. Really like the video!

    • @PhulaTrox
      @PhulaTrox 5 років тому +5

      Whether L was at an unfair disadvantage was never really something the show stated so it's fair to say it wasn't treating Light's moves as cheating. In fact, whether L actually was at a disadvantage is debatable and I'd argue that L actually had an advantage over Light.

    Yugioh even acknowledged joeys luck in S5 Grand Prix arc, where he makes a 1 in 3 bet with the entire match, win or lose, on the line. And he just fails. He loses and is out of the tournament. Also technically yugi has an excuse for his heart of the cards BS, it is canon that he can use ancient Egyptian shadow magic to control which card he will draw next. So he’s just cheating.

      In Yugioh, there's no cheating. Because everyone cheats

    I would say Kaiji: ultimate survivor is a better example of luck and strategy. (This is not a spoiler cause this show is literally a roller coaster.)
    This show breaks down the mind of gamblers and has actual weight to the stakes. The value of money is meaningless to the host but is everything to the gambler.
    The strategies are built on the fly but provide a huge advantage over the other players. In the latter half, Kaiji knows he is going to lose but keeps playing hoping for a miracle. He even breaks and begs to walk away. Soon, plans they laid out finally start to show results and literally breaks the luck aspect making the impossible to win game turn in to a guaranteed win.
    Kaiji s1 and s2 shows how luck can be a factor but goes to the lengths of saying that only idiots rely on luck. They even say "Never gamble unless you know you are going to win."

    I was wondering do you think that maybe a strategy show like death note or code geass is different than how a strategy on like hunter x hunter is done? Like for sure they share a lot of the similar rules but a show like naruto has to balance the exposition of the plan with the actual action of the scene and I personally think that it changes the game just a little bit

    I would just include in Mao Vs Letuce Lambsauce, Mao was totally focused on reading Lelouce (and reveling in his pain) and didnt detect Suzaku coz he had no idea he was on the board.
    What could be used more in anime (or any show) is having a superior main character losing because the bad guy got lucky.

    I would add to the luck rule that if a lot of plans the planner makes rely on luck then they should be punished for it every once in a while.
    Too often MC's will have godlike luck and always draw the right card at the right time, but it feels cheap if it keeps happening. Having the luck fall the wrong way every once in a while is a great way to both raise the stakes and to make future plans that rely on luck feel like actual gambles.

    The Heart of the Cards, as explained to me, turned out at the end of Yugioh to be the Millenium Puzzle's power. It basically augmented odds in favor of the holder. Whatever card Yugi needed would be placed at the top at the right time.
    Not sure how accurate that is, but I thought that was stupidly brilliant.

    • @namoma4922

    I wonder how you feel about the second arc of Death Note. I always loved the first section but felt that the second part fell flat on the "Acknowledge luck" section. That being said, I watched the shows years ago so my memory might be fuzzy :)

    • @0Clewi0
      @0Clewi0 5 років тому +3

      At the end the second half of DN was forced upon needing to continue the manga in the magazine. The duo later work Bakuman has a really neat way of exposing that topic.

    • @PhulaTrox
      @PhulaTrox 5 років тому

      (I'm going off the manga here since its second half is far superior.) In the second part, there were far fewer instances of characters getting lucky compared to the first part. There were three instances, and all three of them were instances which favoured Light, which were...
      1. Mikami ending up being extremely intelligent and someone who takes initiative.
      2. Mikami electing Takada, someone Light knew, as his spokesperson
      3. Mikami figuring out Takada was in contact with the real Kira even though his deduction was relatively flawed and there were other factors to consider.
      I guess they failed to acknowledge the luck aspect of 1, but ultimately I wouldn't say it's too convenient as Light could've just controlled Mikami to mail the Death Note to someone else.
      They acknowledged 2 many, many, many times.
      They didn't acknowledge 3, but it does say something about Mikami's character, even if it wasn't bluntly stated how.

    5;31 the interesting about that is that lot of people missed that refrence in the very begining of the entire show that explains that tran shipment bit in episode 2 So with Lelushes deductive reasoning he might use this event to erace a valuable part of his past as to how he got that shipment of nightmares to begin with , Good plot for amovie

    Honestly I was surprised there wasn't a single example of HxH used. It felt like almost everything involved strategy in that show, and there was even a moment where Killua was just trying to figure out why someone sounds/feels like they're lying with the very limited knowledge he had. Hope you make a video about HxH, probably about strategy or mystery in the future.

    After watching both of your strategy videos back to back, I would love to hear your opinion on crime shows where the pieces have to be put together, just like your subsection b description, but shows can fall flat because sometimes these things are lost either behind things that wouldn't appear unless Deus-ex happens. While in contrast, and what makes a good crime show, a character's vast knowledge can make the police show their competence yet incompetence. The best example I know of would be through Detective Conan and it's language cases such as "Sit down please" where other characters do not know something cultural but the character's knowledge of non-common facts displays his vast intelligence. This is also a duel positive as the show is giving the audience, who has been given all the hints to figure it out themselves, the sudden amazement of the "That's how the protagonist tricked/trapped/caught the antagonist"'

    So I have a quick little fun fact a out the "luck factor " you mentioned, in Yugioh the anime never stated it, but all the millennium items have abilitys that let's them do certain things, each one has their own, and Yugi's millennium puzzle's ability is to provide the wearer the best luck possible, or essentially somthing along those lines, so its actually explained why hes so fucking lucky but the anime decided it would be easier to just say "heart of the cards"

    8:56 This decision Eren was forced to make is one that has shaped him over time. When he believed in his mates, they either could not achieve the objective or get killed, while when Eren himself volunteered (in Season 3 Part 1, the Royal Family's cave or whatever) to save them, they succeeded, which made him believe in himself, and undertaking the actions in the Manga by himself, without any other person taking charge.

    1:52 Between the two extremes spoonfeeding the necessary data to move the plot forward by info dumps in form of an expository soliloquy is one of the worst sins an audioVISUAL medium can do.
    It's really scary to hear encouragment for this, specially in a medium where this particular narrative flaw is a cliche.
    All that said, I understand what you try to say, and in the case of strategy you are absolutely correct, but I felt the need to make this discernment.

    When people are going to stop using No Game No Life as an example of a good strategy anime? For each thing it does right it does 10 things wrong by giving Mary Sue powers to protagonists.
    For example, the mind game mentioned in the video wouldn't even happen if not for their ability to win a game of chance 50 times in a row. And don't get me started on the midair sharpshooting and humanly impossible coin toss.
