    The reason it was such a mine dense area is likely because it was a dry creek. Those mines were left overs from the Soviet invasion in the 1980s. In the decades following, the rains would wash them down into valleys and creeks where they would be concentrated in an area and just get buried in the mud.

    One thing I'd just like to point out is these soldiers aren't basic infantry guys, they're part of the British Parachute Regiment as signified by the wings on their shoulders. The Parachute Regiment isn't like the 82nd or 101st, they're more on par with the 75th RR or other SOF units and they're a big feeder for the SAS.

    The GPMG mounted on the Landrover can only be loaded from the left side. The empty cases fall out the bottom and the link goes out the right side. Also the scene where he was digging with the knife was the old way of searching for IED's and mines before the Valen mine detectors and op barma came into TTP's. Yes I am a 12 year British military vet, but remember this movie took place way back in the early days of Afghanistan and the British deployed with the most basic equipment.

    This was during Herrick 4 in 2006. I was on the tour and heard about it almost in real time. There were only about 3000 British troops in the whole country, and only a third of us were out on the ground. We were spread around like a mad womans shite, trying to hold ground in little platoon and company strength patrol bases, with bugger all kit and learning on the fly. Looking back it was a joke.

    As a Brit, I'm laughing out loud literally at your British accents. That front mounted gun is called a "Gimpy" General Purpose Machine Gun 7.62mm not .50 cal. It does seem odd if they're driving Land Rovers, they'd usually be right hand drive.

    • @bornepatrol
      @bornepatrol 8 місяців тому

      Love the GPMG, it’s weird they keep calling it a 50, we used it for a bit as an individual weapon in the gun section. Well depends where you were posted to it was either apart of the normal section or was in weapons platoon. Was heavy but it was a nice addition, never got to use one outside of training though.

    6:25 from what i remember, atleast with the 240, i think its the same with the 50. you have to flip the (im gonna make this sound wierd) you have to flip the top of the bolt to the other side. if i remember right it looks like this...l\l....and you just flip it and make it look like this.....l/l..... or vise versa. then thats when you can swap the feed tray and that

  • @jesseanderton2
    @jesseanderton2 8 місяців тому

    For the .50 you have to change the bar and feed slide in the top plate, change the track and extractor arm on the bolt, and the feed and ejection trays. Easy transition, but uncommon for ground stuff. The Afghan MD-530's were set up with a L and R gun.

  • @markharding8230
    @markharding8230 8 місяців тому +8

    I think they must have some shots in revervse. The General Perpose Machine Gun (GPMG) which you saw mounted on the land rovers passenger side is belt felt left to right. Brass comes out the ejection port, right side, and link is ejected from the underside port. Fantastic weapon that would easily rival the m249 and its been in service since the 60S

    I think they mounted the ammo cradle on the wrong side because that's a left hand feed tray on the L7 GPMG(FN MAG/ M240). I'm not sure if the left hand versions will accept a right hand feed tray, feed pawl, or top cover. Interesting side note, the M240 C feeds from the right.

    The film is also known as "Kajaki" as that's where it happened. Kajaki was an RnR location during the Soviet invasion, so it had lots of legacy minefields surrounding it. Remember that this was shot on a shoestring budget, and investors had a producer credit. So don't expect mass Marvel-level CGI. When we deployed in the early days, we were basically crashed out from the UK to Afghanistan, so we had next to no actual war-fighting equipment as we did later on. We also didn't have the numbers like the US to go out and patrol; we basically holed up in 'Alamos' and prevented TB flags from flying over the District Centres.

    It looks like the sequence at 5:40 is shown mirrowed 🙃the driver is also on the "wrong" side...left side....L1A1 / L111A1 or L7A2 machine guns are fed from the left too 🙃
