@Gravely man , the reverse isn't supposed to be able to Lock in , only the forward position , And in the forward position there is NO slipping of the clutch , this tears up the clutch, so it's either engaged or it isn't engaged . I learnt that from a master Gravely Mechanic 26 years ago and I been building them ever since , From the original Gravely engines to Kohler to Briggs and Stratton .
I have a 1963 and a 49.
The front forward and reverse front arm are flipped.
