With great mustache comes great responsibility
Hahaha!!! 😂😂😂😂

Excellent
Who has such a clean and powerful moustache these days
What's ignored in this movie is H.W.'s deaf awareness of his father's borderline psychotic behavior. Being deaf allowed him to fully understand his father's madness.
Good call. It's very subtle, but he looks highly uncomfortable and even a little scared in this scene.
why did he love the boy too much though??? he literally did everything for the boy till the boy decided to leave him which made him mad .. i think the only thing he ever loved more than money was his boy
@@TsarOfRuss he literally explained to the boy he only took him in as he needed a fresh face to sell his business.
@@TsarOfRuss His "dad" was a sociopath and incapable of loving anybody. He was more of a prop to allow people to think he was a decent person.
@@omarcrosthwaite4941 but didn’t he tell His son that after H.W. Told him he was leaving to be away from him forever? After that scene Daniel looked very distraught to me. Thoughts?
"Do not tell me how to raise my family"
Jesus Christ he makes that sound like the deadliest threat ever
His heart burned with a fierce competitiveness, a white hot hatred of those who he perceived as threats to his ambition. He not only wanted to beat you, he wanted to bury you alive. A lot of high achievers and ambitious men carry this trait-
It may not be the "deadliest threat ever," but it ranks right up there with the top ones.
@El Fenomeno As are many great men, unfortunately.
Trey Warnock Howard stern showed this trait when taking over the country in the early 90s. He was a bastard to the program directors and the dj’s in the other cities.
AdamG1983 it is. In a previous scene, he made a threat of slicing his neck after the other man made a comment about his son’s health. That’s why that “I told you what I was gonna do” is so ominous.
Greatest actor of all time, literally disappears into the character he is playing. Unbelievable
I thought the same exact thing. In his movie Phantom Thread
Daniel Plainview disappears and you can't even tell. DDL is one of the greatest actors of our time.. An inch below him id say Gary Oldman is 2nd greatest.
I looked at your picture quick and thought “Is that KGB?” Lol.
He’s nuts!
O
as patrice oneal once said "he does a movie every 10 years and gets an oscar" lol
"I told you what I was gonna do." That line is so strong.
He's letting him know that he still plans on cutting his thrust. Brutal.
Yeah that line was so cold and just amazing, probably my favorite line in the movie.
Hi Jack
The only one at that table who even understood what he meant by that line was HM
Yeah I caught that too
Man that guy can act.
Daniel Day Lewis
Uhm..
Can the personality slurs. You don't know me. I don't know Daniel Day Lewis. His presence in this movie, his intensity, remind me of my late father. Nobody in a movie has captured his mannerism, or how he could control a room simply by walking into it and being himself. This is an unusual and real kind of person. My father was not the devil (as the red lighting of Daniel Day's face at different points in this movie suggests.) He was very smart and loved to drink. He did many wonderful things to help deserving people behind the scenes without letting even his family know. We found these things out when several people came to us after his death and told about the time he helped them set up a business, or etc, etc. If Daniel Day Lewis is like this in real life, he is a a badass person. And a badass actor. :)
He's trolling. And your dad sounds like a stand up dude.
I don't think of trolls as real, so never care what they say. In my opinion you are correct about my dad. People generally loved or hated him.
"Oh excuse me gentlemen, excuse him gentlemen".... freaking brilliant dialogue. It's like Plainview is so hell-bent on making his point that he doesn't even have the patience for Tilfert apologizing to his colleagues and absolutely despises the niceties of acting as a gentleman would.
+Joe Moe meh.
+Joe Moe Brilliant, Indeed!!!
It reminds me of when Eli was crying "Yes he does!" and Daniel goes "Yeshedoesaaaah..." at the end. Being so angry and hateful toward someone that he cant even stand to hear them say anything, no matter how trivial, without mocking them. That kind of intense loathing is what makes him so interesting and likable.
Strikes me more of a DDL improv than a scripted moment. Either way brilliant of course.
Many lines were improvised, which is impressive. Not to mention this guy is simply one of the best actors around. And this is easily one of the best films as well.
"You look like a fffffffffool, don't you?"
"Yes."
LMFAO
I am not sure of the correct spelling but after Tillford said yes Daniel Day mumbles "ggggggsss."

well they try to avoid trouble
I love this time in American history. This movie is mesmerizing, so many complex layers to Daniel’s character , he’s truly a master of his craft .
It was probably the most most fascinating period since the Founding era, for many reasons. During the same period, the first gigantic fortunes were made, laying the foundation for America's oligarchic ruling class, while simultaneously, the most horrific lynchings were taking place in the South (this film takes place between the Sam Hose and Jesse Washington lynchings). DDL's character is likely totally ignorant of such goings on, but his narcissism is a perfect diagnosis of why most Americans were indifferent to the cruel society growing around them: they were utterly focused on how they could personally profit from the system in place.
yea, i love time of oppression too .. you can easily walk over people without any repercussion
Life expectancy wasn't as long so you lived like you could die tomorrow... cause you could lol
@@TheRealGnolti It was rough back then though. Few people were like Daniel, most were like Abel
@@TsarOfRuss Yeah, and when the day of reckoning came, the people you walked over returned as made men and walked over you (or worse). Predatory societies look pretty attractive to aggressive, sociopathic people, but they forget that their days on earth are numbered.
I am convinced and have been since I first watched There Will be Blood, that it's not a story about ambition or oil, but about a misanthropic man who adopts and learns to love a child as a son, and who because of his disposition cannot accept this goodness in himself. It's an extremely sensitive film about the father and a son: Daniel makes sure that HW isn't bullied. Daniel meltdown at the end is his anger at himself for destroying the only relationship that ever truly mattered to him.
What about the "I hate most people" scene?
@@vranime3772 That’s exactly what the commenter is saying. There is good in him but he chooses to feed the evil instead. Or maybe it’s just too great for him to overcome. Either way, he hates all people, and had a chance to overcome his hatred with HW, and utterly failed, ultimately left alone to rot and sweat as a tired, bitter old man with nothing but his oil money to comfort him.
i disagree.
sadly, i see myself in Plainview. very cynical with no "road of religion" to stay straight upon. misanthropic is probably the best description.
I see the worst in people and im amazed when they prove me wrong, yet that doesn't stop me from keeping "an eye on them".
Plainview saw HW at the end as a "competitor"; nothing else. even though he was the one using HW as cute face to help him make deals, he felt betrayed, even though it wouldn't have mattered; if HW had stayed close to him and tried to be a follower of his, Daniel would have still have found something to hate about him, like the fact that to Daniel HW was just a "bastard in a basket".
HW did the right thing by getting away from him. Eli made the wrong choice by returning to Daniel to remind Daniel that yeah, there are maggots like Eli still slithering around. I relished in Eli's death just as much as Daniel did.
That's my lil rant. i know: cool story bro.
*I'M FINISHED!*
Very interesting take!
@@malikjohnston3883 well put!
How can you not get goosebumps, this movie is packed with 2,3,4 minute one take scenes, no cuts , all closeups, fucken incredible performance by Daniel .
Master and commander is a good film
This reminds me of my dad who always thought his anger was justified because he worked so hard when we grew up and you felt embarrassed but also legit afraid when he confronted people. The kind of anger that comes from being too proud of how much money you have. I know this anger and this pride DDL displays at the end of the movie.
Daniel is so good and why? He doesnt over saturate the market. He doesnt put out 3 or 4 movies a year so when he comes out in one you know its 🔥🔥👏👏
Its because he takes real time, love and respect for the characters he plays. He makes every role look fresh and unique. No one-dimensional characters with him.
But I’m such a big fan and I absolutely hate how rarely he comes out in films. Even if he did 1 high quality film every 1-2 years I would be happy.
Dank Sinatra He’s retired now, so don’t hold your breath.
Just like Leonardo Dicaprio but better
He made enough money. This is why he doesn't do a lot of movies. One every year, or two years.
2:17 Man, I love how Daniel can go from a calm mood to a death-stare so fast that even when you can tell it's coming it STILL catches you by surprise.
this movie has about 4-5 "best scenes"
That scene with his son, when they break up, is so heart breaking, so so so heart breaking
stamatinos21 in my opinon the top 5 scenes are
1. I drink your milkshake scene
2. I've abandoned by boy scene
3. There's a whole ocean of oil underneath are feet scene
4. Someday I'm going to come into your house and cut your throat scene
5. And the scene in this video, you look like a fool tilford
This is one of those movies where you can watch a scene multiple times and notice something brilliant about it that you didn't notice before. Movies like this are so rare nowadays.
The oil rig explosion

If you grew up with a tense relationship with your father, especially one where alcohol played a large role, this movie hits very different. Sometimes i see so much of my dad in Daniel that it gets hard to watch. Thankfully these days things are better, so it makes for an enhanced viewing experience, all that past notwithstanding.
This film was made on the same budget as punch drunk love.
I just needed to tell some this.
Really? I would think this movie would cost millions more.
There’s no fucking way
Yeah and Punch-Drunk Love were so over budget due to Adam Sandlers high salary. He's one of the highest paid actor in Hollywood. That's why the production value look a bit over simplified in there compared to TWBB
Made by the same writer and director as well
Thats amazing
Oh excuse me gentlemen. Excuse him gentlemen.
Such vindictiveness

this is one of the most eviscerating scenes EVER. The tension between all characters is amazing. And the poor kid has to sit there, not even being able to hear whats going on or know that he's the reason why there's a problem.
Oh, trust me, H.W. definitely knows
@@Makeacheese& he’s definitely not the problem - just the pre-text
He reminds me of my father in some ways. He'd drink too much and pick fights with people for no reason other than the fact that he was suffocating under the confusion created by all the things about himself and his life that he had never figured out how to decipher. I was just an extension of the childish, machismo narrative that he and his generation entertained. He never had any idea about me as a person, and when he realized I had weaknesses, he responded with disillusionment and rage, which made me resent him even more. In the end, the only thing that was left was destruction.
QualeQualeson My uncle too before he became a preacher.
Man, that is insightful. Damn insightful.

You may stay, Mr Lead.
Imagine if Daniel Day-Lewis had been the sheriff in No Country For Old Men...
I just did and while DDL is awesome, I think Tommy Lee Jones was absolutely perfect for the role of a Southwest Texas Sherriff. Fun counterpoint: imagine if DDL had been Anton Chigurh.
Both the sheriff and Chigurh were acted brilliantly, no point in imagining.
It wouldn't be any different. Day Lewis would just method himself in to TLJ's skin.
As per IMDB trivia: While on location in Marfa, Texas, No Country for Old Men (2007) was the neighboring film production. One day, Paul Thomas Anderson and his crew tested the pyrotechnical effects of the oil derrick fire, causing an enormous billowing of smoke, intruding the shot that Joel Coen and Ethan Coen were shooting. This caused them to delay filming until the next day when the smoke dissipated.
Yeah. It wasn't broke so no need to fix it.
No Country was a flawless film.
I feel like that the director just told him to do his best impression of an 20th century oil tycoon and he said “ok”
H.W.'s expression of complete and utter wtf is one of my all-time favorite aspects of this scene.
+Jae Kaitch Absolutely agree. It was almost like he was about to corpse but he held the expression for the entire monologue. A very subtle expression but one that conveyed exactly what he was thinking.
The cinematography is alluring
Don't tell me how to raise my family ! I TOLD YOU NOT TO TELL ME HOW TO RAISE MY FAMILY..... Gives me chills every time
Can you explain why he said that, I haven’t watched the movie in years
@@vijayrikhye7723i been reading the comments looking for the same explanation. This scene just makes Plainview look like a fool tbh.
One of the best movies of the last 20 years. A masterpiece.
"I told H.M. Tillford where he could shove that" hahaha
😂😂😂
I know it's been said time and time again, but I genuinely don't see Day-Lewis in this role at all. Everything from his voice to his appearance are completely transformed. It's as though Plainview is a real man and all PTA had to do was film a real person just doing his thing. Absolutely stellar acting.
Good Lord. Day-Lewis is simply brilliant. No matter the role, you can’t take your eyes off of him. His presence demands your attention and his talent holds it. I could watch his performances on loop, endlessly.
He’s an acting god! I mean seriously this man is unbelievably talented. That and I relate to his characters so well
The soundtrack to this movie is so well done.
what a masterpiece this movie is. one of the few which no one dares to call it over-rated, though there has been lots of talks around it since 2007
There is no best scene. This entire movie was an incredible masterpiece. Every scene was the best scene.
No one else in history can do this but you Daniel! You set up the highest limits for all who will come after you. I LOVE your performance.

Good lord the amount of competition within that man is terrifying
DDL paints the picture of a frustrated, ostracised man like nobody else imo.
Damn. You can 100% feel that this man is built out of desire for power and money. He would do anything to achieve his goals. The boy next to him is not his son, he is just a tool.

I never seen this movie before I was shocked to find out it was made in 2007 to me it looks like it was shot in the 80's and was remastered. I like that. I think I'll watch this movie later.
I’m about to watch this for the first time. I’ll add my thoughts in 2.5 hours.
Just beautiful how it cuts away to the boy, H.W. , accompanied with jonny greenwood’s heartbreaking soundtrack. The boy didn’t hear a thing, but Daniel Plainview, in a twisted way, kind of stood up for him. Or was it just for himself?

A staggeringly good film, so many good performances even beyond the obvious astonishing one, I love watching this when I've had a few, concentrating on the nuances is an amazing experience.
I can't think of a single actor from our lifetime that can compete with Daniel Day Lewis. A master of the craft. Wish they made more movies like this. Seems like everything has to be superheroes, cheap remakes, and silly nonsense these days...
It’s so incredible. There’s just no film like it.
Citizen Kane is in many respects especially themes, performances and broad plot. There will be blood seems almost like a homage to Orsen Wells and The Phantom Thread to Ingmar Bergman.
And a bit of an homage to Stanley Kubrick too I think. Some similar scoring and cinematography, especially the very last shot. This movie really was the first of its kind in decades.
Very commanding film, you feel like Daniel berates the viewer even lol
