The rowdiest concert I ever went to was The Kinks in 1983 for this tour...totally insane! Ray Davies would randomly start playing the beginning of Lola and the crowd went wild. One of my best concert memories! 😊
Always loved the nostalgic feel in the music and in the video, as well as lovin' those horns. I'm with you, Shawn; even though they are suppose to sound Big Band-like, I hear some Mariachi, too. I only wish Ray Davies' sister got the chance to know that her gift of the guitar became a gift for ALL of us, as her two brothers went on to form one of England's greatest rock bands.
Nice reaction. Touching to hear artists writing from a genuine place. No wonder the song resonates like it does. Just as timeless as any of their early classics..
Dave and Ray Davies were the youngest of 8 children six of which were girls. This was a loving tribute to their sister Renee who after giving Ray his first guitar on his 13th birthday, went out dancing where she suffered a fatal heart attack. The song does not mention this of course but honors her memory by honoring her life. While Renee left this world in real life, the Renee in the song continues on always excepting the invitation to Come Dancing.
Ray Davies, lead singer, songwriter (and frustrated boyfriend in this video) is one of the all-time great lyricists, right up there with Dylan, Lennon/McCartney, Pete Townsend, et al. His ability to take the mundane from everyday life and turn it into a catchy tune is unrivaled. The Kinks "Muswell Hillbillies" from 1971 is a masterwork of songwriting.
I'll definitely have to check it out. I got to see them when I was in college and a friend of mine met Ray and started up a friendship with him. Whenever he was in the area, he would look her up. One of the greats!@@tcanfield
Gotta check out the Kinks' _Father Christmas_ soon. Also, _Celluloid Heroes_ and _Misfits._ That's just scratching the surface though of this iconic band.
Ray, and his brother Dave, both guitar, song writers, and both sang, had two sisters too. They grew up in north London. So this is really a family narrative. A few songs by The Kinks deal with their family.
The Kinks were one of the best of the first British music invasion of the U.S. radio airwaves! The most amazing and satirical lyrics. Try their holiday tune called Father Christmas, which is a view of British society of that era!
Love the Kinks, such a great catalogue of songs. I was a teenager in the 60's remember the birth of the Beatles the kinks and the Rolling stones etc. Great time to be young , so much great music.
Thanks, Shawn! Such a romantic throw-back... the Kinks were amazing.. such a variable sound... everything from hard rock to country, to this... I hope you react to more!
Back in 1982, MTV could make or break a new song, and they really got behind this video, showing it once every hour. It worked, pushing the song to #6 in Billboard and #12 in the UK.
I remember my mom liked this song when she first heard it. She was from Manchester and the sound of the song (the horns, etc) with the lyrics of going to dance at the dance hall reminded her of her late teens and early twenties in the '50s in the north of England. The images of the houses in the video reminded her of the row housing she grew up in.
Great song from a very good album. Hit the airwaves and music stores while I was managing a home stereo equipment store. I recall cranking up one of the big systems with this when we would do late night inventory counts after closing time. This isn't typical of The Kinks, but I love it as much as I do their older music.
Had the good fortune to see The Kinks on their "Low Budget" tour, at an outdoor show in Massachusetts. Ray Davies can really get a crowd amped up, they were a very fun, energetic, dynamic band. Lots of great songs, "All Day and All Of The Night', "You Really Got Me", "Wish I Could Fly Like Superman", "Low Budget", "Sleepwalker", "Nervous Tension" and "Celluloid Heroes". More...
I might as well mention if you have kids who must be in by midnight, here's what you do. Set an alarm clock outside your bedroom door for midnight. Go to sleep. Your kid gets home at 11:55, tip-toes up to the alarm clock and turns it off. You do not have to wait up for them.
Saw them on this tour in 82 in Detroit. They played a good variety of songs from their catalog. Ray was fun on stage and his brother, Dave played well.
Love hearing the history behind the creation of the songs that you react to. Always liked this song but never knew the story behind what it was in tribute to. I Really enjoy your reactions.☮
Interesting. I wasn't aware his sister had passed like that. I just thought it was a fun song hung on his childhood memories. The kinks always injected fun into their songs. They enjoyed their music. Ray and Dave were brothers, and they had sibling squabbles. Ray always kept his younger bro I his place. Dave did have one excellent hit though - Death of a clown. Perhaps you could give it a go. Other kinks tracks to consider are Sunny Afternoon. - You really got me - Tired of waiting for you....All good stuff.
The Kinks may not have enjoyed the same level of success as some of the peers but holy crap, Ray Davies' batting average is insane. And Dave Davies had the misfortune of being an outstanding writer in a band that already had one of the world's greatest.
This song was a tribute to Ray Davies’ sister, who died of a heart attack on the dance floor.

I took my girlfriend to see them on that tour ... sheffield lyceum remember that well
Sister gets a little cheeky in the live version. She says, “Ray, I came dancing tonight.”
No Kinks rabbit hole exploration is complete without listening to "Waterloo Sunset."

My favorite Kinks song -- so fun and upbeat and sweet.
The Kinks "Sleepwalker"...Nuff Said. 🔥

Muswell Hillbillies is incredible, I agree. I also love the Arthur album. And Lola vs. Powerman is amazing!
Yep, what a talented guy. There’s a doc about him called “Imaginary Man” that’s really worth watching. The song by that name is fine too.
I'll definitely have to check it out. I got to see them when I was in college and a friend of mine met Ray and started up a friendship with him. Whenever he was in the area, he would look her up. One of the greats!@@tcanfield
The Kinks are quite something. I grew up listening to their incredible pieces. Lyrical geniuses, as well. There are so many to enjoy!
Outstanding ❤

A classic!-- with a strong message
Celluloid Heroes cuts straight to my soul!

There is no end to the Kinks variety of music, just brilliat!
"Don't Forget To Dance" from the same LP is a beautiful song.

Yes yes yes. Saw them live once (openers: Red Rider with Tom Cochrane)- wonderful night. Peace, love and bellbottoms.
Thanks, Shawn! Such a romantic throw-back... the Kinks were amazing.. such a variable sound... everything from hard rock to country, to this... I hope you react to more!

Such a great song and tribute to his sister.
Beautiful tribute ❤️

The boy playing air guitar on the tennis racket represents Ray playing the guitar Renee gave him.
God bless The Kinks

That’s such a good upbeat song!! Always loved it. Thank you for listening and sharing!!
Such a happy song and the way they integrated the big band horns at the end. This is just lovely

The Kinks were a part of the British college invasion. Many great songs include Victoria, You Really Got Me and All Day and All of the Night.

Great upbeat music 🎶🎶🎵🎶☮️
The Kinks have a deep catalog. Twenty-four studio albums between 1964 and 1993.
"Juke Box Music" (1977) is a banger.
Love hearing the history behind the creation of the songs that you react to. Always liked this song but never knew the story behind what it was in tribute to. I Really enjoy your reactions.☮
Thank you, Deb 😊 happy you're tuning in and enjoying the ride with me 🙏
Ray Davies plays the uptight guy in a suit, as well as the rock singer. 🎸🎸
The ballroom, is a location in London, it’s been used in a few movies.
Damn, I love this song!! Give a listen to Ducks on the Wall - a full-on R&R number from them.
👌🐓📸 Oklahoma Chicken Cam approves of this video! 👌🐓📸

Love this song! Thank you for reacting to it😊 Maybe others will disagree but to me it doesn't sound like "new wave" at all, more just pop/rock.
Thank you ❤️ this had such a sweet and sad meaning behind it. Great tribute to his sister though
Fantastic band. Maybe try “Autumn Almanac” and of course “Father Christmas”
The Kinks may not have enjoyed the same level of success as some of the peers but holy crap, Ray Davies' batting average is insane. And Dave Davies had the misfortune of being an outstanding writer in a band that already had one of the world's greatest.
What's interesting is that the Kinks' songs haven't aged, whereas many other "more popular" groups are now caricatures of themselves.
Bizarrely Martin Scorsese saw this video, loved it and adopted some of its style/concepts in his films including Goodfellas. True fact.
Structure and tone of this song is very similar to their track Apeman. Including the spoken portion.
Another great song!!
You should give a listen to (Wish I could fly like) Superman by the Kinks
There are hundreds of songs of theirs-- Ray's brilliance is legendary. 🤩
Better than the Beatles. Handle it.
Beautiful song. Next up Destroyer more Rocking you will like…
Sadly she would never have daughters to wait up for she passed away
Did you really just compare The Kinks to Jimmy Buffet?
I love when there is a whole reaction with some cool information in it, and this is what someone gets hung up on lol
@@ShawnSalvadori glad that you are amused. I stand by my point. Grab your delight where you can though
