It’s only worth it if you’re going to go further in school like grad school or med school. A bachelors degree in psychology doesn’t get you much bc you will only be eligible for certain stuff. PhD or psych from grad school automatically allows you to do more which means make more. Or med school for psychiatry is an option which is the top paying psychologist.

i cried at school and my school psycologist helped me today, well she is a councellor actually. I have adhd, autism and dyslexia and i also think i have teacher attatchment, and i have been chatting to her for 3 days each week because i have frequent panic attacks and i get sensory overload and i feel overwhelmed and stressed usually and i feel like hurting myself. do you have any tips on how to go clean and also how it would be easier for me to take compliments because i have negative thoughts and i can never take compliments. also why does my school councellor say that everything is always private and in between us,but then after our meeting she usually calls my mum . like im starting to get trust issues

School psychologists and counselors are different people but you can talk to both! They have to tell your parents if you’re at a risk of harming yourself/others or if someone is hurting you (this is to keep you and others safe). I would recommend talking to a therapist so you can talk about all of these things and get the help you’re seeking 🤍 I’m glad you’re already talking to school people too!! They’re a great resource.

@@schoolpsychmom they are. I wish you were my school psychologist , ur so kind could I have ur email so I could reach out to you. Also when I am at school sometimes I write letters saying I feel unsafe and I hate myself and I am stupid and ugly and dumb and I give it to other students to give to teachers but now that has put me on high alert, do you know why that might be and also do you have any tips on any coping mechanisms for if I feel like peeling my skin and hurting myself and also for panic attacks. Also the reason I write that I feel unsafe is because of my teacher attachment, when I don’t see a teacher one day, then I will feel unsafe so I write worrying letters to get out of class and run around the school so that the teachers will get the counsellor, because I get nervous asking for an appointment, could you also give me a tip on how to ask for appointments In person because I used to email for appointments but now she is telling me I need to go up to her office to book an appointment and I get anxiety going up because I feel like she will kill me, so then I freak out and run around school barefoot and then they call my mum and also another way I try get out of class is by putting ink on my hands , and a few weeks ago the school emailed my parents saying they were stressed out by me and I might be chucked out if I don’t stop

If you get a master's in school psychology would it be possible to swap into school counseling or do you need to go back to school? I know you said you did some counseling, but I'm referring more so to the guidance counselor position (unless your district just has you do both(?))

Also, what's the best undergrad for school psychology? I don't want to commit to psychology undergrad because I'm scared of not getting a job if I fail to get into grad school, would something like education/special education/social work be good? Also are there any good minors? Maybe Spanish or something, I don't know I have so many questions and I'm so indecisive about a career path I'm sorry :P

@@MahkAndCheese I just graduated from my school psychology program and I am starting my first year as a school psychologist this year!! From what I know, it is not possible to swap between school psychology and school counseling. In my first semester of grad school, the school counselor students and school psychology students took some of the same classes, but that was it. You would have to go back to school, but you might be able to get away with not taking some of the classes. Also, you need to complete practicum/internship hours. To answer your second question, in my experience, your undergrad experience can be anything related to the field. You can do psychology, child development, or education. In fact, your degree may not be related in the field at all. For me, I did my B.A in Liberal Arts with a concentration in Environmental Studies. I did have to take some psychology courses in my undergrad, but some school psychology programs do not require you to have a degree related to the field, HOWEVER, it may be helpful and some schools do ask for that. I was also extremely indecisive as well (you can probably tell from my B.A). I didn’t know that I wanted to be a school psychologist until my senior year of undergrad!! Maybe interview some school psychologists, attend open houses for school psychology grad school programs, or do some research on the field. It is okay to not know what you want to for the rest of your life when you are so young!

I agree with the other person, as a psychology undergrad, I regret that degree for so many reasons (and I don't think it helped me with school psych)! Special education would probably be great (and a couple of psych classes such as developmental, stats, abnormal psych, and intro I think? check programs). I also think a spanish minor would give you a major edge!! Social work would be indirectly helpful, but if you decide to take a different route when you graduate, the pay is pretty bad there with a bachelors. Some programs offer counseling concentrations so that you can do both
