  • This standard operating procedure (SOP) covers the process for applying a primer sealer during a repair. Before beginning any repair, it is important to always wear the recommended safety protection required for the job.
Follow along with the outlined process below for the first steps in achieving a flawless finish.
    ----------
PD-0701: PRIMER SEALER APPLICATION STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE
    ----------
    1. A technician should review a work order to ensure that all parts to be painted are present and repairs are understood
    2. Clean the repair area with a regionally approved surface cleaner. Dry thoroughly with a clean towel.
    3. Mask vehicle according to PD-0300 VEHICLE MASKING.
    4. Tack off the repair area. For spot repairs, keep the primer-sealer confined to as small an area as possible. Look up the formula for the topcoat color and identify the recommended G-shade or Spectral Grey primer-sealer. Mix and apply Primer-Sealer according to the Product Data Sheet for detailed instructions.
    5. When using solvent basecoat color, if a second coat of Primer-Sealer is necessary, allow flashing to a uniform, dull appearance before applying the next coat.
When using waterborne color, ECS 8x or P565-318x Primer-Sealer, one coat application is recommended. If a smoother blend edge of the Primer-Sealer transition is desired:
Option#1- for waterborne basecoat color, melt the Primer-Sealer edge with the same solvent used in the sealer. For solvent basecoat color, a uniform finish blender may be used to melt in the Primer-Sealer edge.
Option#2- after the Primer-Sealer has dried thoroughly; lightly scuff the sealer edge with P800 - P1200 grade paper.
    6. When recommended dry time is achieved, the Primer-Sealer is ready for the application of the basecoat color or single-stage color.
