I've heard someone say that if you want to know the character of a town, watch how they treat stray cats. I've yet to be let down by this standard.

Absolutely true. Stray's are for me, integral, treasured members of the community. I love and am just as concerned for them as I am for my own sweetheart cat daughter. In fact, there was a stray female that I suspect had once lived with someone, hanging out and crying in back of the business where I volunteered. I fed her to gain her trust, then set a trap with food. She went right in, and is now with her forever loving family. I literally cannot rest easy if any cat is not lovingly cared for 🥰👍🐈

Had a boyfriend that suggested we move in together. BUT he explained my cats would have to go. Guess some people have to learn the "unconditional love" aspect the hard way. I still live alone with my cats.

My parents raised me to love animals. Last year when I lost my cat to cancer, my goal was to adopt an adult or older cat that would otherwise be passed over. At her getting-acquainted vet visit, the vet said she had resorptive tooth issues and sent us to a veterinary dentist who handles the animals at our zoos. He showed me X-rays and said that there were 6 teeth that had to come out, but we could talk about how to proceed. I told him to take care of my cat as though she were his own. It cost about $2,300+, but I told him to go ahead. Many people told me I was crazy, but I love that cat and only want the best for her. She really came to life after getting those painful teeth out. She’s worth every penny!

When I was fostering feral or unfriendly kittens my shelter mentor used to call me "the kitten whisperer". Now every cat that comes to live with me is so good with humans they want to take them home!
My neighbor is elderly, and unfortunately her husband passed away not long ago. So since she no longer had to worry about keeping the garage and driveway clear for him, she started putting things out for the 2-3 feral cats that live in the storm drain. So now they have access to water and safety, shade during the summer, and someplace safe from coyotes and other predators. I really respect that and definitely want to be that kind of cat person when I'm a retiree, too. Next time I have spare cash I want to get some pet supplies delivered to her, too, so she can continue to provide a safe place for them.
When I went to the shelter only one cat reacted to me, a big ginger boy, yes I took him. The lady who ran the shelter said he usually ignored people who came in, he was 1 year old and just needed me as much as I needed him,(I was going through a tough time) people say I saved him but he really saved me. I named him Vinnie after Vincent D'Nofrio the actor because he is big and cuddly.
We feed stray cats and the skunks have arrived. Skunks need to eat and normally eat before other animals. As time has passed the skunks and cats are eating together from the same plates, it is joy to witness. The tiniest kitten was the first to approach and the baby skunk shared his plate.
That is adorable! Baby skunks are so damn cute. Saw a mom carrying her pups around our back yard when I lived in a dilapidated shared house years ago. Needless to say, Mr. Pirate went for his walks in the front yard that month.
The thought or idea of being looked by a cat who thinks I'm cute. 😍
interesting talk. I think its also important that people have started to recognise that mental health is as important as physical health for survival, and that house pets aren't 'sitting there', they're good company, we're responding positively to them emotionally and they're calming us down. Cats are good at this because they can purr.
Your Claudia knows her other name is also "Sweetheart", so sweet how she looks up at you a soon as you call her this :p .

Growing up I always wanted the bond that cats have with their servant-owners. Sure enough, as soon as I was out of the house on my own, I was adopted by my first kitten. He needed a buddy while I was working, so I kept one of the cats that my neighbor and I trapped to take to the vet and find homes for. He was so brave, taking his time to get close. He taught my first cat some cool cat things. When he finally felt safe to get TLC he loved it the most.
I never understood how much veterinarians and parish clergy have in common. An altruistic job may not pay a lot considering the years of advanced training, but it is a fulfilling calling. (I'm a 73 year old retired Anglican priest, and I thank you for the insight.)

I've been feeding a little girl feral kitty that lives in our alley, for the last 2+ years. My neighbour paid to get her trapped & fixed, vaccinated, etc & I feed her. She is never going to be a pet, she never has let me pet her, or come closer than a foot or so & I'm okay with that. I know she's fed, we put some shelters out for her, & we all kind of keep an eye on her. I love her & I know that she knows me & is happy to see me, but I doubt she loves me. However, If that's all that happens then that's okay. At least we know that she's fed & sheltered.
This was very interesting! I had to stop it part way through, as I wanted fill a plastic ice cream bucket with water and put in the freezer overnight. It is going to be very hot, and I saw a stray cat hiding under a bush next to the fence in our yard shortly before watching this video. I am sure it passes through there and hides often...so will leave the frozen ice water there to slowly melt, should it need water in the upcoming days. Then I was able to finish your video.
How compassionate and loving of you. The stray's need us desperately. And I for one am happy to do whatever is necessary to fulfill any needs they have🤗🐈👍

As does mine, who I'm absolutely crazy about. She knows this, and takes full advantage and control of me; the only earthly being allowed to do so. She rules the roost, and allows me to share her home 👍🥰🐈
Symbiotic vs altruistic relationships are located at very different levels of the psyche. Symbiotic relationships are at a subconscious or purely chemical level and are most often between different species, animal or vegetal. Between humans, we call them codependent relationships 😄. Animals unconsciously use NLP far more than we do as their vocalized expression is very limited. They are able to know when we are sad, depressed, angry, suffering much more easily than most partners. Even when we fake feeling fine, they know better. The vibes we project are easily readable to an animal as a billboard is to humans. If we feel weak, anxious, depressed, fearful or our self image is poor, the dog readily puts himself in alpha position to protect us (not good). On the other hand, cats who don't particularly like strongly alpha individuals become more approchable and empathetic. I have had a condition for many years where my heart rate becomes dangerously irregular and when this happens at night my therapy cats wake me up and one of them jumps on my ribcage while the other one vigorously grooms my left arm. They were never trained to do so. They possess a stunning level of innate empathy. That goes well beyond symbiosis and even altruism.
This happens far more often in the animal world (among and between species) than we'd like to believe.
So interesting. I enjoyed it like a Girl Scout (maybe more ☺️). It's good that this is a required badge too!

Modern housecats still contribute to households. I never realized how much my two were contributing in the late 90s until I had to fly to the east coast for the winter holidays, and they had to stay with someone else. They stayed with this person for two weeks after I came back home ... during which time I was baffled as to why crickets were suddenly getting into my apartment! Why were there all these crickets suddenly? I rapidly realized that the crickets had always been getting in, but the cats were dealing with them.

I’ve watched all of your videos once, some more then once. Love your kitties, especially Mr Pirate. And, of course, I, like thousands of your other followers, think you’re wonderful. Thanks to you I’ve been able to give our kitty, Biscuit, pills and to brush his teeth daily, I trim his nails alone, clean the outer portion of his ears, brush his fur daily, even his tummy. But I’d see appreciate a video on getting him in his carrier. Come time to take him somewhere, it’s always a battle. Traumatic for him and for me. Thanks again doc.

wow, thank you! it literally never occurred to me that humans have the genetic predisposition to love animals and horses, but it makes total sense. that just blew my mind! it completely explains why we love horses and animals, especially as children. it really does feel instinctual and natural!!

Very entertaining and interesting talk. Thanks so much for sharing. We don't learn much in history courses about the relationships between people and animals, so that part was especially interesting. I think I heard once that goats were the first animals to be domesticated. If I didn't like my garden so much, I would get a goat.
I'm curious about something I read recently - someone saying that, because pet cats get spayed/neutered, the only cats that are reproducing (outside of fancy breeds) are outside strays and feral cats. Which is where rescue kittens come from. So apparently, this might lead to us unintentionally selecting for less friendly cats, because the most domesticated ones meet a genetic dead end. Given the speed at which cats can reproduce, it seems like these changes could happen fairly quickly, too.
My rescue is the sweetest, but her surviving kittens were rescued and won't reproduce, except for her unfriendliest, most nervous, daughter who got away and did have kittens. I wonder what this will lead to! And tbh when I see my friend's Main Coon, she seems much more dog-like and comfortable in human environments than any of the rescue kittens I've fostered, though all were socialize well and early! Trying to reconcile that with my general "adopt don't shop" values and my belief in the importance of spaying and neutering (being in animal rescues and seeing so many hoarding type situations will do that to you). Do we just accept the next generations of cats will like us less and be less happy in our homes? But what's the alternative, let our pets breed, to their detriment, and increase the already too high cat population, stop rescueing and leave strays and ferals to suffer alone? When we're the ones responsible for them being so prevalent in the first place? With TNR feeling increasingly like trying to fill a bucket with a hole in it? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

the human- animal bond is even more interesting when you look at that humans even take care of animals that we innate have no other reason for that that we can.
like we also take care of wild animals like a wild pigeon only to release it again when it is well.
in a way the evolution to make use care for other animals or even plants is in a way even transmitted to animals/plants where we are not direct effected by

Very stimulating talk. But I wonder to what extent the bond is cultural (social) rather than instinctive (biological). I am thinking of native Americans who had no horses - or other large domesticated animals - before the Europeans, so could not have had affinity for them selected by evolution. But they quickly adapted to a horse-riding way of life once exposed to them. It doesn't seem hard to teach or train people to care for animals, because it is an extension of our instinct to care for our dependents (especially our children). The material benefits could explain cultural transmission of the bond just as much as instinctive transmission, but the process would be much faster.
I agree that culture is both important and underestimated. Cultural effects like you describe make a lot of sense. My personal opinion is that there are both biologic (weak) and cultural (strong) effects that determine a human's affinity towards a given species, but I couldn't back that up with any studies that I'm aware of.

This is a good presentation as far as it goes. You didn’t much explore psychological benefits of interacting with animals and you barely alluded to intraspecies aggression. Another thing many people feel that cats are less devoted than dogs and I have lived my life with both dogs and cats. I did take in one rescue cat who had an irrational hatred of me and I was delighted to send him on. However I have had many cats in my lifetime that have adored me followed me constantly watched my every move and slept in my arms. I had one Catahoula and they are not the most cat friendly breed who was the mother of our cats always cuddling and licking and caring for her cat babies. Actually I had another Catahoula who really liked cats too. They were both reared with cats from the time they were much smaller than the cats. Even so that’s not a foolproof method.

Dr. Yuri, when you talked about horse and dog ancestors and how were they different. Were cat ancestors actually very similar to today's cats? I mean technically they do exactly the same job as they did those 20 000 years ago (unlike domesticated animals).
well yes. if you look at wild smaller cats today they look almost identical to the once living in hour homes.
that goes for multiple cat species (Chinese mountain cat or the African wild cat just to name a few)
Some of them even show traits with there members that do stay in our homes. to the point that they can become comfortabele to co exist with in close distances with us.
(close could still mean with a 2 meter distance)
The sand cat is another example. It looks very similar to tabby cats. I have yet to see a wild sand cat petted or belly-rudded.
Dr. URI I enjoy your informative videos. Would you please do a video on the subject of tooth resorption in cats? My 7 yr old calico kitty,Lulu had a dental cleaning,the vet called me while she was having her procedure and told me she needed two jaw teeth extracted because of resorption. I was shocked, never heard of this problem! Now I am so worried about her. I would like you to explain what is going on. I appreciate you . Thanks USA
Just a little bit about altruism, I think it is as you say, but there is second part to it: "but you don't expect anything in return".

Oh you DO get something in return. Each is such a gift. Each gives different gifts. It's like saying you get nothing in return from a friendship.
You seem to be dancing around this idea that the positive trait of altruism and kindness to animals is ultimately a successful evolutionary trait. I really like that, it speaks to human nature not being nasty and brutish, but nice and wanting to be nice to cats, and hopefully by proxy, others.
Probably not related but can you tell me how to handle a rescue cat (whom I love very much) is soooo aggressive about food to the point Im squirting him with water from a water bottle when we eat our dinner and I have to seperate him from my dog and other kitten during their meal time. I know he is teaching our kitten the same thing. Up on the counter etc...

I actually don’t trust anyone who doesn’t like animals. I strongly believe that they are lacking in empathy.

How's your other cat? Is he still alive?
How does being used in war and being subject to being hit by humans' weapons a benefit to the horse? How does being hit by a whip to go faster benefit a horse? Nor does dragging the human and the chariot benefit the horse. In modern times horses remain the slaves of humans in countless ways : Use of the bit, the spur, a crop, dragging loads, working for humans, horse racing, horse shows ,rodeos, some medical people say it isn't good for the horse's back to have humans sitting on it. I think you understand animals and want them to have the best treatment. I know it's time for humans to rethink how we use other species,for our benefit ,not respecting that they have a right to live their lives free in a way that benefits just themselves.
Is it really altruism if you get something / a lot out of it? I am not sure I agree with your definition of altruism.
Dr. Uri, you overstate the genetic determinism of interspecial bond a bit in your talk. Just because a trait is heritable doesn't mean it has a basis in DNA. Very few traits, especially complex cognitive ones, have been identified with DNA sequences. Right?
That is true, but I believe it is not because they are not there but because a) cognitive traits are an interaction of multiple (maybe thousands) genetic foci and so are incredibly difficult to study. We may not have the computational power to do it yet, and of course experimental design is problematic and b) Study of genetic basis of cognition is largely taboo in the scientific community as it is way too close to comfort to ideas of eugenics and can easily be perverted for some truly dark causes. I had an interesting discussion on this topic with some friends who hold PhDs in social psychology once, and they universally agreed that no one wants to study things like intelligence from a genetic perspective because the implications are an ethical quagmire.
@@HelpfulVancouverVet Doesn't the (nongenetic) environment play an important role in how traits develop and how they are inherited. So wouldn't it be more accurate to say most traits have. Nongenetic component?
I love this more recent and plausible angle on evolution. The "tamer" wild dogs and cats hung out with humans.
Archeological evidence reveals dogs & cats were hanging around humans since the end of the last ice age.
Horses aren't so simple. Interesting how male soldiers used them as war horses. But modern-day horse enthusiasts are mostly female.
If you're single and want to meet women, take up horseback riding (men). Start fishing or golfing if you're a woman.
I don't know what are your rates and your costs but these days a vet consultation in Ottawa is $200-$300 for a 5 minute consulation so in term of revenues for vets, it is likely not so bad.
I'm not sure that we are being completely altruistic when we expend resources on our pets .I recently took my cat to the vet because he had an infection ,that required medication of course and administering it to him (Which he was less than happy about ) I was willing to spend the money and give meds to a protesting cat because I wanted to help him, but also because I didn't want to lose him .Part of the reason was to avoid the pain of loss so I was doing it for myself as well .There's nothing wrong with that of course, but it's as well to recognise it and be honest about it .
