Toronto seems to have the money to do stupid things like spending millions to rename Dundas square. They’re priorities are messed up

The best part about the renaming is that they removed the name of an abolitionist, and chose a word from Ghana. Ghana had a massive slave trading operation and contributed to the slave trade for centuries and abolished it much later than Dundas did.
Nothing makes non-white people feel more comfortable in Toronto than having the main square named after someone connected to slavery, right?
How do you feel about having a park named Hitler Park or
a main boulevard named
Ghenghis Khan Avenue?

Dundas is not someone we want to honour, but I agree money could have been spent in more needed ways.

@@andrewtorrens7790 if their costs increase they have to increase it. Simple as that. Most landlords are just breaking even. The money is in the property equity not the actual rent. The rent pays the banks. Corporate landlords vary however..some break even some profit. Profit is not a bad thing. It allows further investment in housing. Landlords have built far more homes far faster than any government. It's not a conspiracy. It's math. And yes rent increases are regulated.

Petition to rename Dundas started in 2020 and city council under Tory voted this change through in 2021. I am not sure if the public was aware or if council, at that time shared the amount of money that it would cost, because it is in the millions, and although the intent is great, financially Toronto has a lot of other priorities.

Inflation has wiped out all of our annual salary increase for the last 5 years. Now possible 10-16% increase in property taxes on top of the ridiculous spikes in purchasing a house/condo. It is physically impossible to become a home owner at this point in Toronto. I'm happy I didn't stay because even back in 2016 I couldn't figure out how my salary would ever get me out of renting.
Olivia chow has made no effort to cut inefficiencies and luxury costs. Her only proposal was to tax and spend. She has spent more time and money trying to rename a street and telling people they can drink in parks with billboards and advertisement campaigns. But that is what the NDP does. Tax and spend.

A very large increase that still leaves Toronto behind most cities for the same value of property. A $1 million home in Toronto pays $6500 in property taxes, the same in Ottawa pays $12,000.

The citizens of Toronto should all maybe read up on the history of the cities San Francisco and Detroit. These two places were both vibrant world-class places to live with great economies. But sadly, with terrible leadership and even more poor management of spending, they have ended up in terrible shape. The population and property values have grown. That has increased city revenues. Rent controls will fail and scare away development, investment, and labour. Want more revenue cut the waste and red tape and the size of government. Not front line workers the bulking bureaucracy that produces nothing but a giant road block to development and kills small and medium-sized buisness in favour for giant monopolies that can afford the red tape.
Because Democrats and liberals/NDP/left ruin everything. It's the same in the US as Canada. Canada is like a big blue state and the big blue cities are turning in Gotham city. Thank gosh I left Toronto when I did.

I have a semi in North Bay! I pay $3600 year taxes and $75 month water!! My semi has a tiny lot and value is assessed at $220,000.

You should all demand a look at where the price increases are. For instance, I had a plumber give me a quote of $1900 for 1 -1.5 hours work to clean a fatty blockage out of my sewer drain. He already charged $500 fore about 20 minutes to but a camera down the relatively clean pipe to find where the blockage is (which I watched on a monitor). Guess what, I'm buying a drain cleaning power washer for $450 which includes 150 ft of hose and a special drain cleaning head. Don't let any of these guys make you think that they need some special training to push a hose down a pipe from the access points already existing in the basement. Now when it comes to the city and those who run it without a clue on what maintenance actually costs, and the exorbitant fees they are being charged, you can be that if an few honest independent people got to quote on the most basic needs your taxes just might come down instead.
Don't worry it gets worse, guaranteed.
So why spend 12 million on renaming a street…jeez
Budget deficits for municipalities should be a surprise, Canadians are cutting back, lowering tax collections and the transit system has never recovered from the pandemic. Homeowners are supposedly the richest, but in reality many are on fixed incomes or stretched, this is going to hurt. It is a vicious circle, and in reality the feds are already running big deficits, yet they are their hope for saviour.. good luck.

In Niagara we have paid higher property taxes than Toronto. In 2023 we had a property tax increase of 12.5% and 2024 we will have a 9% increase. With government debt being so high and so many government workers, this is just the beginning.

I told everyone that voting for Olivia Chow is a vote for a substantial tax increase.
Out of the 25 biggest cities in Canada, toronto has the 7th lowest property tax rate. Yes, the hike will affect people, and also it will affect the wealthy far more than the average person.
Also, it's a very basic equation. If the city isn't allowed to go into debt, it has to either drastically slash costs, or it has to increase revenue.
Renovating properties for accommodation that are just sitting idle right now would alleviate a large portion of the homeless problem. Affordable housing should include all property owners that want to welcome others to share their space legally. Laneway apartments is one old idea that could assist with tax revenues as well. Think outside the box you expect folks to live in.

How about chow to put a temporary halt on expansion plans and cut back on the budget a little till they recover the costs? It goes back to basic budgeting 101.
