This god complex is a big part of the problem. The fans and the media make the Leafs the number 1 sport in Toronto.
American teams don't have that luxury so must compete hard to get attention and as a result don't take anything for granted.
The Leaf organization takes everything for granted.

Mitch’s back checking responsibility ended in OT when the rush finished. Leafs should cover their man when back checking all the way to their own net. Why didn’t Mitch already own up to his back checking screw up? No wonder Sammy & Morgan are so stressed - they were thrown under the bus by Mitch. 😀
Unfortunately Marner decided to give up back checking his man - so he watched his man take the pass off the boards & cut in front of the net to score.
Mitch basically has thrown Morgan under the bus.
In a post game interview those who care about Mitch should have encouraged Mitch to just say - “ I gave up on my back checking duties” leading to the Bruins OT goal. From the Core 4 - they never own these playoff disappointments. So more just come.

Let’s be honest it was a clunky choice of words…but if you watch the clip he clearly wasn’t boasting. I've been a huge Leafs fan since I was a kid when my pop took me across the border to see a baseball game one springtime and The Leafs were into a deeper playoff run. The passion of Leafs fans and the kindness of Canadians in Toronto bowled me over and once I put on my first sweater, I was Leafs for life. That being said, I don't idolize the players, not a single one. I respect them and I appreciate their skills. But I love the jersey. It doesn't really matter whose number is on the jersey when I buy one, it's a fragment of time and time holds still for no player as they constantly move around the league from team to team. For the sake of parity and fair competition, I will root for whichever team comes through in the all Canadian Western Conference semifinal because I really wish Canadian fans get to celebrate with the Stanley Cup again, like I was fortunate enough to do with a team before. But also because I want to see that stigma that Canadian teams cannot win it anymore broken, to give Toronto confidence going forward. Change is needed to get over the hump, toughness and grit needs to be installed mentally to go with that flashy offensive style. But, Go Leafs! One year it will all come together and it will be that much sweeter.

Canada doesn't need to win the Stanley Cup in order to prove they are the best hockey nation as that honor goes to the 2026 Olympic champion. Whoever wins the 2026 Olympics in men's hockey is deemed to be the best hockey nation because even though Canada hasn't won the Stanley Cup since 1993, Canada did win the last best on best Olympic ice hockey tournament at the Sochi 2014 Olympics thereby making Canada the best nation in men's hockey.

    • @drfirewater
      @drfirewater Місяць тому

To be fair ... Canada has not had the Stanley cup because the teams with the most Canadian players usually ends up winning it. USA and Canada are pretty close to each other when it comes to international hockey ... really you can argue a few Scandinavian countries too.
Sid Crosby ends up in Toronto instead of Pits and we likely have cup this era
MacKInnon ends up in Toronto instead of Avs ... pretty much guarantee they don't even make playoffs most years.
McDavid on Toronto (could still happen fingers crossed) and this town will erect gold statues of that guy before he even laces up his skates.

How many times did you see Marner have to bale that bag of picks out. Ask Johnny T if he's willing to move. Move Reilly for a defenceman that plays his position and has a shot that can rip the net from the point. Whats the leafs record without Reilly. 14-2-1 in 17 games. And if you get a defenceman who has a shot you'll see the 22%pp go up

@@B.Jewels I don't think he meant the word "God" literally which a lot of Leaf fans are taking his words WAY out of proportion. When I heard him say the word., "God" I immediately knew people would take it the wrong way. The media for one I feel like are taking this to a whole new level which to me is kind of ridiculous.. People in general get offended with EVERYTHING these days so he should've treaded carefully or chose to use different wording. Again, I don't believe he meant it literally. We can agree to disagree LOL

Marner's NOT the problem. He's the Leaf's "smartest" player in that he has vision and is able to make plays on the ice. What he does need is a small attitude adjustment. Tavares is the real problem ($11M wasted money). Tavares, Shanascam, Keefe, Bertuzzi, Rielly, Brodie, Klingberg, Murray, should NOT be back. That would clear up cap space enough to get the pieces you need (a good goalie, and a tough stay-at-home d-man) to get over the hump

It's incumbent on all Toronto media outlets to LOUDLY announce our desire to acquire the services of Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid, by outbidding all offers once they become available. The coach has little to do with it. The Toronto fan base deserve superstar players that actually want to win a Stanley cup, are willing to sacrifice their body/health to accomplish this..unlike the current overpaid "regular season dynamos" that wimp out come playoffs, claiming headaches, or a runny nose..give me a break..the reason Gretzky, Lemieux, Messier, Orr, Howe, LaFleur, Bossy, Crosby are revered as the greatest players of all time is because of PLAYOFF success, not regular season, sadly the current lot of overpaid Leafs will inevitably be forgotten like all the other guys that never one a cup if they don't produce, and succeed in the playoffs.. Hockey players ARE treated like Gods in canada. Especially in Montreal. We erect statues of hockey players outside the arenas. How many other occupations recieve that honor? Theres nothing wrong with what Marner said. It was a generic comment about the iconic status hockey players recieve in canada but because hes a leaf, the internet erupts in fake outrage.

Marners statement is exactly why the Leafs are so hated and why people enjoy it so much when they go down in the first (or any) round. That "we are the end all and be all of the hockey world" and have the best fanbase ( I guess all teams say that) , the richest team, and everything centers around us gets very tiresome when they don't back it up by winning and that is also why they keep getting compared to the NFL Dallas Cowboys - they think their crap doesn't smell and they choke most of the time getting towards the playoffs. When you beat your chest and think that you are"the best" you have to back it up. In fairness I am a Habs fan and this is not said in spite ( although Steve Dangle is a hell of a lot more fun after a loss like that) and I am hearing much of this from Leafs fans.

"god's" win. At least they challenge. Leafs barely show up. That's when you know it's time to make changes. When the attitude and ego doesn't match the results. Clean house. Listen to the fans that know what could make this team successful, obviously what has been tried hasn't worked.
