    2024-2024 Matthews $13,250,000 , Tavares $11,000,000 , Marner $10,903,000 , Nylander $11,500,000 , Rielly $7,500,000.
    $54,153,000 gone on 5 players, out of 20, or, roughly 63% of your cap, wasted on 25% of your iced roster. Absolutely comical.

      @@8JFJK8 With Reilly's money total of 55 million a year in 5 players. Plus Marner will want more when Johnny's money drops off but will be swallowed up so fast that it solves nothing and the problem will continue year in and year out. Heck Leafs were going to be better when Mrazk's money fell off. Always money falling off but the problem is then they just overspend and do it to themselves again.

    I wasn't happy about the price tag until watching this. The fact that sid hates it makes me optimistic. I still remember how passed he was that Nylander got 6.9 on his last contract, which turned out to be a bargain, as he was one of the lowest paid consistent 30 goal scorers over the term of that contract (which was made better by sid claiming he would never be a 30 goal scorer, when he signed the contract). Nylander has scored more than 30 goals in the last 4 seasons, and was on a 30 goal pace in the 4th (if it hadn't been shortened by covid). Sid saying Nylander won't stay consistent at this level makes me think Nylander will be a 50 goal scorer for the next 5 years, by which time the salary cap will be high enough to make the raise much less of a problem.

    I am MOSTLY with Sid, however looking at the Conn Smythe winners, since the salary cap goes up most years you need to look at % of salary cap at the time and not the dollar figure of someones salary. Example is Crosby. his cap hti was 8.7 however the cap was 64.3 mil when he won.. so about 13.5% of cap. Next year Nylander is 13.1% of cap(If cap remains unchanged). Its a fair value for Nylander, but the Leafs just cant afford to rely on such a small number of players, this isnt basketball its a team game

    • @jeffreym.8957
      @jeffreym.8957 4 місяці тому

      Agree with Cap Hit %. But I would say it is too rich given all the things Crosby does for the Pens. Crosby was the face of the league at the time and had already won Cups and individual awards. Nylander's deal is only fair when compared with his overpaid line mates. But if you are going to give Marner, JT and Auston whatever they want, how can you be a hardball negotiator with your best forward in a contract year?

    No disrespect to nylander, don’t like the number, I like the player, won’t hold it against him . I think when we look at other players on other teams making under 10 mil, they themselves want to make the team better and understand the cap, which is a good trait to have. But you don’t have to have that trait, I blame Marner for this. I don’t blame Auston , jt , and Connor for this, I want to but can’t. Jt could be playing for San Jose at 13 mil, people forget that. I think they understand the cap, but if someone comes up to you and says “ we will give you 11.5 for 8 what do you think?” And you say “no”? When Auston, Mitch, and John are making stupid money? You’re the fool. At the end of the day, it’s not any player’s job to police the cap, some do, but it’s not on them.

    At the age of 35 Tavares will likely take a discount to keep the core together and that will pretty much swap the contracts between Nylander and Tavares.

    • @pomerlain8924
      @pomerlain8924 4 місяці тому +3

      And they'll give it to Marner. As Sid said, they are more concerned with keeping their guys than they are about winning. So If Marner demands $12.5M in his next deal, they'll give it to him. And then they'll have 3 guys making over $11M that haven't won anything.

Reaves will be in the minors which will open more cap. We will have around 23-24 million for 8 players and one spot will go to Minten and maybe. But his 11 mill coming off the books and say he even signed a 4M deal to stick around.. if not less... thats a huge chunk taken off and the cap is going to be way up compared to where they're at now... There are still ways for this to work and be able to keep rolling out this team and being competitive every year but yes, they do need to find wins around the lineup, whether draft picks stepping up on ELC's, FA's that wanna come here and prove themselves or trades for guys on good deals etc.

    What the Leafs do with Marner, will show what direction they're going in. I don't think the Matthews and Nylander contracts are that bad, IF those are the two Forwards they move ahead with.
    To win a Stanley Cup in the cap era, the formula is easy. What you need to do is build your team around 4 players: 2 Forwards and 2 Defensemen; or 2 Forwards, 1 Defenseman, and 1 Goalie. Just look at how Pittsburgh, Chicago, and Tampa were built. The tough part is, finding those players.
    Matthews and Nylander are two excellent players for your 2 Forwards. IF the Leafs bring back Marner, which I'd bet they will, they've screwed themselves, AGAIN. Marner's going to want $12 Million. That money will be better spent on a Defenseman or a Goalie. Plus it'll free up money to build a better 3rd and 4th line.
    Marner and Tavares should be shown the door, if the Leafs are serious about winning. I can understand being loyal and show respect to players that have won you a Championship. But if you haven't, it's "See ya later, we're going in a different direction". It's part of the business

      No team in their right mind would loose Marner, Matthews and Nylander likes. All this comparing salaries is foolish, when did those guys sign, back then it was high and now you use old salaries to say Nylander and Marner salaries are too high and in 2 years, Nylander and Marner salaries will be considered as reasonable. MUST SIGN MARNER. He too can be as good if not better than Nylander but he needs protection like Gretzsky had. No the Leafs do not need a goalie, wait on Woll and the Beast, Jones is fine for now, they are 2 tough Ds and 1 extra tough guy away from making a serious run, they already have a decent D core, Liligren has been great since his return, Benoit has been impressive and holds his own and so does McCabe, Reilly is great as always, Lagersson and Macmann will devlope fine and be cheap so will Gregor. If the three are kept here and additions made over this season and the next 2, this team will do fine. As much as I love Sheldon's winning record, if the team has to stay with what they have, then Sheldon has to be replaced by or the likes of Greg Brube or Joe Quinnville (appeal to NHL).

The only two options weren't let Nylander walk for nothing or sign him to a contract that pay him more than he'll be worth going forward. I hope the Leafs fans are fine with Matthew Knies leaving, with praying Tevaras takes over half in way of a pay cut, with not being able to resign any defence man or replace them with anyone of quality and with Marner now signing for 13 million. Never mind, hoping Woll doesn't become your goaltender of the future because you won't be able to sign him either. When is the NHL going to up the cap to allow teams to pay professional hockey players like NBA or MLB players? The only reason there is a cap is to achieve parity in the league. If the gloves were off, watch out. Leafs would have the cash and more flexibility to sign and keep valuable players. Like a Zach Hyman or Michael Bunting being let go, essentially, because of the cap situation. To be fair as well, Tavares will not be making his current salary at the end of his deal.
