A lot of people here criticizing how he signs it are clearly unaware of how the voice works. You sing with the voice you have. Trying to make your voice fit in a mold it's not meant for is inviting trouble. I am a spinto tenor myself and can attest how annoying it is if people try to make me sing "their" version of leggerio. My leggerio is their medium volume. Deal with it. And Pavarotti or anyone can sing whatever they want. This was beautiful!
Totally agree! The obsession with so-called historical authenticity is infuriating. We’d all basically trample one another to hear Pav sing Ferrando if he were still with us. I absolutely love hearing big lyric voices in lighter rep. Have you heard Vickers sing Messiah? It’s absolutely glorious.
Olivier De Ridder i agree! Grew up with the version of the young Alfredo Kraus. More than decade ago, before my 20’s, I can sing it really light and floating. But as the voice matured, the concept was not suitable to my voice. took some time and a really amazing teacher for me to get off that concept of leggero singing. Am happy singing the aria now, moving it, just like how Pava sings it here.
@@spencerdarby4696 well, there are arias that were composed for a kind of voice specifically for that role. If weren't the case, we would see baritone Nemorinos and contra-alto Violettas In this case, his tessitura and colour go well; but his breathing technique and tempo aren't: this piece is so uncomfortably slow that some tenors have to speed up the tempo just to keep going. I prefer this are sang by Francisco Araiza.
This is my very favourite version of this beautiful aria, and I’ve heard very many, in very many opera houses and on recordings. What a great shame Pavarotti did not sing more of this repertoire. I do greatly appreciate those arie antiche which he did perform in concert and commit to record.
Contrary to what people in the comments section are saying about the piece. I think that the maestro sang this brilliantly. The again it may be me having good headphones. Jokes aside this is a really difficult piece to even start singing, to sing it with such class and dignity just show us how much of a heck of a bel canto singer he is. Reason being he sings beautifully.
Thanks for the interesting comment. Another perspective is that this was the opening aria of the recital and he may have been pushing a bit. As the concert progressed, he became stronger and more relaxed.

I hear alot of people saying that this aria was too rushed or not properly sung. However i disagree, in fact this version of Un aura Amorosa is my favourite among the other many maestro's just for the fact that Pavarotti managed to capture the emotions of the song as it is to be sung,
the fact that it is very difficult to say that Mozart's arias. However, it is a real expertly manages to Pavarotti. See soloists that Mozart arias, many of whom have a different sound structure. Whatever the case, the biggest ever audio Luciano Pavarotti
I sang this role/ aria in college. And i remember listening to a recording of Richard Tucker sing it. It was an even heaver voice than Pavarotti. Yet sung with great finesse. This was one of Mozart's finest arias. And is a wonderful study in singing technique
HDF ! Pavarotti's acoustic color is higher than for example Caruso's. Caruso's is more like an heroic tenor you can see that at the end of Caruso's career, when he toned down his sound to be more an authentic heroic tenor. With Pavarotti's acoustic color it's easier to sing in passaggio !
Opera singers don't use amplification unless they are in open big places. Theaters usually have great acoustics and that with good vocal technique helps the singer to sing without microphones.
Nevertheless, this theater looks way to big for his voice to carry. For example, the Metropolitan opera house seats 3,800 people and that already is a stretch for professionally trained singers. This looks to seat 10,000+ or more. The reason I asked is because it seems like there are several mics near the Master Pavarotti.
If you saw microphones, (I didn't see any), those are usually used to record in stereo so they can remaster the sound of the video or create CD's for sale. Also when a concert is broadcast live they have to use microphones for that purpose. Now if the singer has microphones in front, is usually to amplify their sound.
I think this is actually the Met Opera. You can read Lincoln Center recital, and the biggest hall there is the Met Opera. Either way the design is really recognizable.
+J. Hernandez Usually never, they sing a LOT louder than any normal humanbeing does. The acoustics of such places are designed for classical music in mind, this falling to the genre in that sense.
This most beautiful voice singing this most beautiful aria....Luciano, you are killing me! I know you can sing with more expression.....think "Una furtiva lagrima".....pleeeeeeeaaaaase? At least Levine gave us some taste of the real feeling at the end.
On the contrary, I happen to enjoy Pavarotti and Mozart very much, but not together. At least not this Mozart. And anyway, if someone had no musical taste, why would they dislike any opera video? They wouldn't even be here. If anything, someone with no musical taste would simply insist this performance is good BECAUSE it's Pavarotti, without allowing objective criticism (like the constant mezzo forte square phrasing that I don't think works for Un'aura amorosa)
This is Mozart. Neither bel canto nor napolitan song. If you feel like listening to this aria sung as it should be you can look for either Araiza's or Simoneau's or Schraier's or Alva's or Mironov's or Wunderlich's or... renditon.
nice sound.tempo is a little fast and his dynamics are more verdi than mozart.however ,the voice is so brilliant that it sounds impressing.levine plays the piano so good.
This is the period where his sound started to spread quite a bit...besides the tempo that is the only thing that is distracting in this video, but I think young Pav had the ability to sing practically anything in the lyric tenor rep.
Pavarotti had a Great Voice Full of power, but not for Mozart Arian, without Lyric and Emotion, Look at the Rendition of Juan Diego Florez, he sings very soft and Sweet and Lyric modus
Pav is the greatest singer of all time bit I don't think he can sing Mozart. Look carefully at his feet when he sings the high notes. He aint comfortable. Its so fast too. Id love to hear what he would do if it were slower. No sledge on Pav he is the greatest and usually stuck to what he was second to non at
You must be fairly off the opera scene if ye think our great maestro is still alive, and I find you wrong as well man, Puccini sounds nothing like Verdi and Pavarotti is off earth.
it'obvious that pavarotti is dead, just an hironic direct speech, and it's obvious that verdi is different from puccini. i just meant the similar "melodramatic" way they can be sung. but mozart in my opinion is different. less heavy, more fresh
Golden tone but musically wooden and shapeless (despite Levin dropping several hints in his sensitive accompaniment), like something to be "got through". Strange almost omission of "un" - but it must be idiomatic Italian. Not sure it is idiomatic Mozart!. But most versions on UA-cam bring us closer to Mozart and Ferrando.
What is the essentials of music? just to express intention of composer? definitely no. It's just singing machine having no emotion. some people cry with scream, or sometimes just teardrop without any sound. music is same.
he sings all the same way, bombastic, relying only on his natural capacity, no feeling, no charm, just through out notes. please go to learn what Mozart is or remain all the time with Nessun dorma. just errible! comercial. Is embarassing
Coming back to this concert after a couple of years and it’s still incomparable!
I love his voice. Fills me with joy!!!

I so agree. His version is lovely. I've heard much worse.
well said
Totally agree! The obsession with so-called historical authenticity is infuriating. We’d all basically trample one another to hear Pav sing Ferrando if he were still with us. I absolutely love hearing big lyric voices in lighter rep. Have you heard Vickers sing Messiah? It’s absolutely glorious.

two splendid musicians each encouraging greatness in the other. simple presentation, and you can hear everything so clearly.
This is my very favourite version of this beautiful aria, and I’ve heard very many, in very many opera houses and on recordings. What a great shame Pavarotti did not sing more of this repertoire. I do greatly appreciate those arie antiche which he did perform in concert and commit to record.
I say this is the most beautiful music I've ever heard
Hey, I would pay an arm and a leg to listen to maestro Pavarotti sing this live.
pavarotti in full form! excellent
Quel merveilleux concert !

Thanks for the interesting comment. Another perspective is that this was the opening aria of the recital and he may have been pushing a bit. As the concert progressed, he became stronger and more relaxed.

The king of the high C's does it again!
Tesoro nostro indimenticabile!

Chapeau !
Beautiful aria 🤩 ❤

I agree. This is absolutely beautifully performed. My personal favourite of all I’ve seen and heard over the years.

He does an excellent job here. His voice is huge for the song though but hey that's life.
❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏Great Maestro
@Chewyfied i totally agree with you!!!!!! topi lehtipuu's interpretation was love.
I sang this role/ aria in college. And i remember listening to a recording of Richard Tucker sing it. It was an even heaver voice than Pavarotti. Yet sung with great finesse. This was one of Mozart's finest arias. And is a wonderful study in singing technique
He could sing Happy Birthday like Verdi for all I care.

Brevíssimo
My love. 💐💐💐💖💖💖
Bravoo!! \o/
This tempo makes perfect sense
This song is so hard that pavarotti also had a troble performing it..
Although I can't sing this song, his toughness was seen to me, too.
Does anyone know if a singer needs to be amplified for this LARGE hall?
Opera singers don't use amplification unless they are in open big places. Theaters usually have great acoustics and that with good vocal technique helps the singer to sing without microphones.

Agreed!

Inascoltabile.
@deepcure se llama JAMES LEVINE
On the contrary, I happen to enjoy Pavarotti and Mozart very much, but not together. At least not this Mozart.

exactly
SOOOOOOOOOO romantic. Not very classical. The writing is classical but the performance is romantic. GOod show. BRAVO
This is Mozart. Neither bel canto nor napolitan song. If you feel like listening to this aria sung as it should be you can look for either Araiza's or Simoneau's or Schraier's or Alva's or Mironov's or Wunderlich's or... renditon.
The best rendition I've ever heard.
you need to listen to more renditions
This is nice...But, no one does this better than Luigi Alva.

One must ask one's self why the two decided to do this piece at this speed. They made a choice, they had their reasons, like it or no.
AWESOME, you people who criticize are too picky!
Al cor porgerà;
nice sound.tempo is a little fast and his dynamics are more verdi than mozart.however ,the voice is so brilliant that it sounds impressing.levine plays the piano so good.

why is he on the tips of his toes?
because he is an angel about to fly.
It helps to control breathing better. Most opera singers get on their toes a little bit especially when singing something high and difficult.
'Relief'
This is the period where his sound started to spread quite a bit...besides the tempo that is the only thing that is distracting in this video, but I think young Pav had the ability to sing practically anything in the lyric tenor rep.
@Chewyfied Yeah, and I'm Liberace.....

no, everyone is to slow. Mozart wrote Andante Cantabile and 3/8.
Pavarotti und Mozart. Nun ja 😏
Levine was playing a bit too fast. The whole thing sounds a bit rushed, despite the vocal quality.

Come on!!!! He sung a hole concert!!!!
Stupid question!!!!!!!!
Amazing but too fast!
no, everyone is to slow. Mozart wrote Andante Cantabile and 3/8.
Un'aura amorosa but is in prestissimo
no, everyone is to slow. Mozart wrote Andante Cantabile and 3/8.
Coming from kill tony
Perfect skill! but.. there is no emotion...
Topi Lehtipuu and Lawrence Brownlee sing this aria better in my opinion......and now I wait for the hate comments....
Beautiful voice, but much toooo fast...
dear Pavarotti, everybody loves you but please don't sing mozart same as Puccini or Verdi...
Do you think he heard you?
You must be fairly off the opera scene if ye think our great maestro is still alive, and I find you wrong as well man, Puccini sounds nothing like Verdi and Pavarotti is off earth.

Sobra voz
Falta estilo.
Jamás fue un tenor Mozartiano.
Los larguetos para las canzonetas
Horrible .
What is the essentials of music?
just to express intention of composer?
definitely no. It's just singing machine having no emotion.
some people cry with scream, or sometimes just teardrop without any sound.
music is same.
this music could be horrible to one man, you. but moving and touching to hundred men, me and lots of people.
Too fast...
Molto Meglio.
@Chewyfied blah blah......................
out of character... Luciano where is the feel?
What ????????????? come on
6 people doesn't have good musical taste
he sings all the same way, bombastic, relying only on his natural capacity, no feeling, no charm, just through out notes. please go to learn what Mozart is or remain all the time with Nessun dorma. just errible! comercial. Is embarassing
