We are Jim and Jessica, a husband and wife team who decided to make the leap from living the city life to an off-grid homestead. We have no training in carpentry or electrical work. We've come armed only with two Permaculture Design Certificates and a whole lot of determination.
Join us on our journey to move beyond a sustainable lifestyle into a regenerative one. We chose to live in the desert because we love the location and we wanted the challenge of bringing this desert landscape into productive abundance.

Love watching you build this house. One question...when it rains like crazy, as it does in the desert, how do you keep the water from leaking into the underground structures? Does that plastic around the perimeter keep it all out? How do you keep it from seeping up through the floor? That's the only problem I can see, but you have to have worked that out already :)

      She is awesome!
There were a few times watching this I thought, oh that's not fair, she's got the harder job than him. I know I would have been complaining plenty of times throughout this project.
But she was awesome & didn't argue or complain about anything. Even that day when she had to put her hands in the ice cold mud, she basically just acknowledged that it was ice cold, but worked right through it.
She taught me something that I'm lacking in myself. That it's not about being selfish or fair how much work you put in as a team. She seemed very driven working towards the end goal and that was her main focus.
      She's such an inspiration.

I helped a couple friends with there Earth bag homes. It's a ton of work. But looks amazing. I built a hay bales home but it wasn't underground. Thinking about doing a combination with earth under like your bedroom and hay bales on top.
I used stucco on my house but thinking about your con idea instead. Cheaper. It cost me $6700 just for materials.
Great Job both of you. And love your Dog

Can you add a second radius rod and put the barb wire on that and then just "roll the wire out as you finish up a row? As long as you have the wire rolls on the rod, you can just keep going round and round till wire runs out. Looks great! If I was to do this, I'd make connecting hallways to each different room. Did you put in drain pipes? I didn't see any.

Buy a 3-hole or 4-hole threaded pipe flange, say 1". Center it and lag or bolt it to the top of the sub-floor. Once you screw in your 1" riser pipe to the flange you can use washers to plumb up the pole by putting them through the bolts,, under the flange to shim it till it's plumb.
