We are Jim and Jessica, a husband and wife team who decided to make the leap from living the city life to an off-grid homestead. We have no training in carpentry or electrical work. We've come armed only with two Permaculture Design Certificates and a whole lot of determination.
Join us on our journey to move beyond a sustainable lifestyle into a regenerative one. We chose to live in the desert because we love the location and we wanted the challenge of bringing this desert landscape into productive abundance.

Funny bone is NOT a Charlie horse. Charlie Horse is a muscle cramp
I enjoy watching your home get taller and taller! You guys aren't playing around! 👍🏻❤
Smashed elbow that goes numb is a "Funny Bone" nerve pinch, a "Charlie Horse" is a muscle cramp.
She's right about the funny bone...
Great upload, respect from the United Kingdom 🇬🇧

Love your senses of humor....both so funny.
Thank you!!
Building a kool house for a better life. What could be better than that!
I’d rather watch your videos than the super bowl!
Charlie horse is a leg cramp. Funny bone is when you hit your elbow. The view from your property is beautiful. Way to go guys.
Crew is a beautiful dog I love to see the fluid motion of his body
Your sports ball commentary was spot on.
I buy one of those greenhouses every year. They last our whole winter keeping plants safe from cold and frosts. If you can keep the frame from breaks, you can buy just the skin/cover. If I leave it up, it only lasts 1 month of spring. They are cheap but effective for my seasonal purpose 🍺🍺
I really enjoy watching y’alls post and look for to the next one. I ask God to bless you in every way
The house is looking really good !
Top of the morning.
Another snow blizzard going on now here today.
Told to stay warm
So enjoying your videos today even better.
Thunk about this, use a rocket stove heater in the house and install a heat exchange in the the stove that will heat your h20. also plumb in your solar heater, using valves to seperate systems between summer/winter
I love how Crew takes you guts for walks. You guys are doing so well on the house!
Thank you Robi!
I bet you both have awesome muscles. People could definitely underestimate Jess.....
We all need to take up a collection with PayPal or some thing for a fence for your dog💞
A long dog run
I think Crew is an explorer and not a humanine to be fenced in, he is the type with a theodolite and pencil behind the ear and definitely a paws on type....his real job of course is a bone doctor.
Another great video!! You guys and @Better Together Life are my go to channels for positive motivation to keep moving forward. Keep up the great work and Funny Bone is definitely not a Charlie Horse
No sports ball in our house either. You are both doing a great job. Thank you for sharing your progress.
Glad to see you two get excited, it lifens up the channal 👍👍
Lol --- Necessary Roughness!! Dang those bags are huge! I think that is a plus! Looking good folks. More power to ya!
It cracks me up when Jess asks Crew if he wants to go for a walk. It looks to me like he is walking Jess! 🐶. And it is a funny bone. A Charlie horse isa muscle spasm that tightens and usually hurts.
Lol! Crew walks most people.😆👍
Don't fret about the greenhouse. Failure is tuition for your future success! Not sure if you have the geodesic dome kit still (the one made from pipes with squished ends), but those make a pretty cheap/strong framework for a greenhouse. Thanks for the video!
Thanks Matt! I think we may do a greenhouse with that.
She is right about funny bone....lol good video guys one of my favs so far, it was good to see jesse tackle you. It put a big oh smile on her face....🙂
I think she enjoyed that a little too much.😆
I adore ya'll attitude and interaction between each other. Football gees I loved playing it in the empty fields and at school . But I have never liked sitting and watching a football game in my life. I feel like thats a huge waste of time. When there are so many other things in like you can do. And get accomplished. And it's most likely a cramp . A Charley hose is more of a muscle spasms. Using happening at night waking you from a sound sleep.
There are apps. That will tell you what size pipe for what wire your using, also never bad idea to put in spare conduit for any future needs👍
Yes. It is always cheaper to conserve than to produce.
Elbow ligament nerve hit, Funny bone. Charlie Horse, leg muscles knotting.
It's a little early for fresh snake sheds to be showing up...
Appeared to be from a non-venomous 'Coachwhip' - aka - 'Red Racer'.
You guys are too funny! -- I love watching your progress -- Thanks for sharing!
Funny bone. Game was alright, the GOAT got ring #7!
There was a goat!? Now I wish I'd seen it.😆👍
You got it!!!
Everything coming along great
You both are amazing
Dan!! Thank you!
Burnt 2x4s and sheets of corrugated plastic make for solid flatland greenhouses.
charley horse: leg cramp
hit your funny bone: elbow smack that makes arm go numb
hope this helps
I was watching the upside of downsizing and I saw u on there. That was too cool. Nice job
It was cool getting to help.😀
You need perhaps Cattle panels to use for a greenhouse dome..... there are some other examples-les on the internet, or you could build a Walpini with a shade cloth for the summer.....
You need to build some screens to sort soils. Use 2" x 4" frames and stretch fencing over the frame. You can make them to fit on the wheelbarrow and wagon or make a frame big enough that it stands over the cart. The weather cooperating is very nice. To me a charlie horse is a cramp but it can be caused by an impact. Good Luck, Rick
Have you ever thought of maybe making a square wire mesh for the wheel barrel so you can siv out the bigger rocks? Sorta like an archeologist would do.
Shout out to Ballsey McSportface for the home run in the superdome.!!!! Lol awesome job y'all. Its starting to look like a palace!!!! Thank you
The 2nd tackle caught me by surprise and then I LOL, ty
Lol!
Yep I am with you about the great match ,set lay up sport game
Lol, you understand sports the same way I do. You remind me of an old Brian Regan stand up bit. Something about "sportsball".
Jess has quite a tackle!
Brian Regan is hilarious! 😆
She finally got me back. I think that was building up.😂
Congrats on course 5!!!
(I didn't watch the game either...;)
Thank you Joseph!
"In the 1890s, an old horse named Charley was used in the old Chicago White Sox ballpark to pull a roller across the infield. He was old and his muscles would get so stiff he could hardly walk. Players and spectators who caught a cramp thought of the old horse and started calling the condition a charley horse."
Charley Horse is an involuntary cramp in the leg or foot
...as opposed to the voluntary cramps...
The home is coming along nicely
Cramps. Hey ~ I got a 3200 Nature's Generator for our power outages. LOVE it. Thought you could check them when ready, again love ours, no affiliation. Great awesome build going on over there! Jelly!!
Never underestimate the intelligence of a dog and their ability to take in things with sight and smell, Crew was assessing the work and why it was being done with the materials it is.
Great video. Thank you!
Crew the quality control inspector
Your home is looking great! I really like your videos.
Thank you!!
We have always called it Funny Bone.
She's rite funny bone and it does feel good, charlie horse is a leg cramp. Learn something new every day
not a sports fan either much more fun to watch your video!!!!!
💯😁👍
Jessica was right about the funny bone. Hey you guys ever play dig dug as a kid? Now your doing the real life version lol. Congrats on coarse 5 !!!!
Lol! Dig Dug is a classic.😀
Get er done
You kids may want to look at the work of Paul Robinson for construction of domes and the classic work of Hugh Kenner for the math behind the dome. While I appreciate the lasting value of earthbag construction, a well crafted wooden dome could greatly increase productivity. A well built stick dome covered with ferro concrete could be just what you need in far less time using the foundations you have already started.
HaHa!! I have just now seen how you are tucking the bottom corners in! Brilliant!!! Thank you.
Also I think I can handle a 20' foot dome with a half-loft ... some of my designs for my future get a bit too big ;)
Oh - I'd say it's funny bone ... or at least that's what i say when i hit mine.
Right on man...im doin the same here in Golden Valley arizona
Awesome
Funny bone on the elbow. Charlie horse is the leg cramp. ;-)
this is a dope project theres lots of fake sports talk but not a lot about whats being done
Amen~!
Just about everyone commented correctly the difference between the funny bone numbness and a charley horse cramp.
BUT I didn't see anyone say why it's called a charley horse.
Back in the 1890's there was an old horse named Charley that was associated with the Chicago White Sox and he would often cramp up and have difficulty walking. The spectators saw this and the condition (cramping) took on the name Charley Horse.
Thanks, Google! Today I Learned. :)
Yes, ..... Go sport.
Are you going to use the Geo dome as a greenhouse? It would be brilliant if you dug down and had layers of veg growing as well as places to anchor beans, cucumbers and other climbers.
We'll be building a walipini for sure.
funny bone! charlie horse is a cramp/s in one or both legs, they all hurt!, great video
Didn't watch it either...Love your ethics!
😂😂😂 at 3:51 Jess was looking at you like what the hell 🤔 🤣
I try to keep my nuts and bolts together at all times. Ohhh the joke that’s going unsaid 😆. Definitely a funny bone. There was a game? Sounds like I missed a good one. Ugh. Epic stuff guys 👍👍
YAY SPORTSBALL! GO SPORTS!
A charlie horse is often a cramp caused by low potassium. :)
Yup it may cost more using UV resistant plastics but it's the key for desert living. I wonder what your place looks like on updated google earth but don't know where to look.
wow looking good guy's Crew is so lovely but he takes you both for a walk you cant hold him back hahahha
Quero ver esta construção pronta logo, parabens
Jess wins the funny bone. Worst pain, ever! Charlie horse is a muscle cramp, usually from a lack of sodium.
I love you guy's
Funny bone is when you smack you arm just right to cause either pain or shooting nerve tingles down to your middle finger. Charlie horse is when you whack a muscle - like the bicep or thigh. It's similar to a cramp, but inflicted instead of the body reacting to a muscle being flexed.
Great job, good team work, interesting work I think you need a small older tractor with a lift,or other lifting device, save time and body, how about using, tires and shipping pallets.good hunting!
I would wire the house for MORE current then 60 amps. You don't have to use that much right now, but the wire size will already be correct if you NEED to increase it for some reason down the road. Maybe you might get a bigger refrigerator or freezer? Your initial current draw might be higher than you think. A refrigerator for example draws the most current when the compressor kicks on, but the current draw is much less after start up unlike a water heater which uses more electricity during use. Also, max current draw is only for a moment, not for long haul. Most things rated for efficency is for long haul over time like yearly use. If you haven't already done so, check with local electrcian. Great job though!
Charlie horse is a leg cramp...and y'all are lot more entertaining than any sports program.
Thank you!
She hit her funny bone...period...it can paralyze arm movement for a time...and man it’s a howling moment owwwww right Crew?
Elbow is funny bone. A charlie horse is a cramp given by a cousins punch.
A Charlie horse is like that big cramp you get in your calf, a funny bone is when you hit your elbow.
Jess is right of course 😉❤
Of course!😆👍
Jess is right ;-)
Ballsy!!! She tackled you!! 😂😂😂👍
Hahaha.....Hi Pam
No mercy from that lady.😆
@@SpringRiverHollar 🙋♀️ hi!
60 amps is plenty......cover the ends of all your pipes as they will be 'dormat' for a while. Nothing worse than finding the blocked, plugged, wet, or filled with dead critters later when you pull wires. Great variery footage of lots of different activities in this vid.
Thank you David!
Muscle cramp is a Charlie Horse
She's right. It's the funny bone and it hurts and goes numb. A charley horse is when you have a bad knot like on your leg that hurts like no other
It’s a funny bone! Lol. No cramp or Charlie. 😂
Charley Horse is muscle cramps that come on without warning in the legs, usually, but can occure anywhere in the body. It's named after a horse in Chicago, if memory serves me. Not a commonly used term outside the US. I trained in medicine in Germany, but I heard the term from my American wife.
60 amp at 240 volts will be fine
I've worked on 4 unit condo that was
Wired 40amp 240 volts that was working fine it was built in the 1970s
In earlier years duplex could be wired
30amp 110volt (one 30amp circuit)
One 110 volt phase went to one unit
The other 110 volt went to the other unit... People learned to live with it.
You can run a 100amp breaker off 4 gauge wire
Jess wins the super bowl! Funny bone is in your arm. Charlie horse is in your shin.
It's a muscle cramp
This statement is just food for thought...
The codes here in L.A. County, Ca
And maybe the rest of the United States
In a Home/House. There are only two kinds of circuits..
Those protected by Ground Fault Circuit Interupter
Of those protected by Arc Fault Circuit Interupter
maybe your in your area you can opt-out of inspections
My point here is
no one knows the future
GFCIs or AFCI
These devices will not share a neutral
My advice is to run a dedicated neutral for each circuit. It only cost penny's compared to building your dream
Be prepared for the future and or the people who you may sell your dream to...
