I LOVE this guy and what he says. He is so down to earth , humble and normal. He also seems to be such a nice guy. And a great entrepreneur. I always listen when Steve is talking. He is inspiring. Thanks for the interview.
Steve completely changed the way that I approach sound design. I used to swear by my old vintage hardware collection of synths, but ever since Serum came into the picture, now I mainly only sample my dusty old synths to use as wavetables in Serum. I really appreciate you Steve!
It’s empowering to hear Steve mention that he experienced imposter syndrome and self sabotage throughout his career. I always naively assume successful people were confident in their ability through every stage of the process. Every now and then I’ll watch an interview with someone like Steve and I’ll be reminded that low confidence in yourself is something you have to ignore or power through.
This interview is fascinating. Steve is amazing and I would gladly pay for the updates he gives out for free. I slept on Serum for a bit and then saw I could rent to own on Splice and decided to give it a go. It quickly blew my mind and I was so amazed at how easy it was to create extremely complex sounds. Now with the ability to automate LFOs with the LFO buses... the modulation possibilities seem endless.
Nice interview man. I really enjoyed the part where Steve talks about mistakes producers make and how he found his niche to program what he wanted to use
Great podcast, always love hearing Steve's take on music and Serum. Such a refreshing approach to running an audio/plugin company. Looking forward to Serum 2 for sure
all the best Steve you are cool and it is refreshing to see so many people that feel the same way I do about you , the phrase comes to mind be true to who you are and most of all be you , we are all unique and that is a space we can all live in respect and respect for others all the best to you and all of the people that respect everything you are doing , inspiring others is cool
I generally dig his update policy of no additional fees -- everything up front. But $189 dollars upfront for Serum 1 is really hard to swallow. So the update policy also gatekeeps who can afford to use the software too by throwing all the costs on the artist at once upfront, versus pay a little one year, pay a little more for an update another year.. which I'd prefer when the full price is otherwise so high.
@@BlazertronGames No, that's quite different from what I am suggesting. Because with splice you end up paying the whole 189 dollars before you own it. That's more like a car note or a mortgage where you have possession of the product but are still paying down on it until you legally own the car or house. I'm suggesting something like 89 dollars total price for the synth. Then 50 or 60 dollar upgrades when whole (or half) versions come around. I prefer that more. Those whole version updates don't come around quickly so, while you are paying the same or even slightly more over time, you are not paying much upfront to own a copy outright.
@@BananasananaB I'd take $189 up front over having to pay for upgrades every few years. I don't see your problem with splice. $9.99 a month for a year and a half, with no interest rate, and then you own it for life at the end, free updates and all. I'm pretty sure you could even pay the subscription for 10 months, and then just pay the final $89, and then you have it. It's not like you're forced to approve it with splice, either, the license ends up going straight to your Xfer account. I really don't see how that's an issue.
@@BlazertronGames The issue is time. Splitting the money over a long period of time without ownership. If you stop paying at any point within that long period of payments, you lose access to the product. I detest payment plans. I buy things (everything -- furniture, cars, even my house) with cash up front. I don't do credit or payment plans. I just buy outright. Splice is the opposite of buy outright.
If Steve is coming up with a great bundle of cutting edge features I'd happily pay another $189 and let him out of his promise. I think $189 is more than reasonable once a decade to keep something in development and on the cutting edge. Maybe offer a free upgrade for those that have purchased the product within the last two years or so. I think most of us want him to keep innovating and improving rather than learning the ins and outs of a product just to have the developer abandon it like Access did with the Virus.
corporations do this in order to "win" the market. theyre never about the best products. that's what I love about DIY people who make and sell things they personally invest their creativity and skills in, not profit off the work of others and claiming more than the product is.

Can't believe serum came out 2014, has it really been almost 10 years? :O
gg steve

We've all been there 🙏

Isn't that the point of the splice subscription, though? Pay a little each month and at the end you own it for life.

I only had to buy a new Apple to continue using Serum 😂
Someone needs to turn off notifications on their phone. Or at least silence them. 😂
Starting at 13 is late? Come on!!
Late to the party but i like the hes not pushing product in every exposure he has unlike other synth companies who shove the shit down your throat
