I wish all plugin developers were more like Steve. It's easy to see he has tremendous passion in his work....it's clearly much more passion based than money based with Steve. Serum is dirt cheap and amazing for what you get. Not only that be he himself personally responds to his customers for tech support ALOT....and even for questions beyond tech support. For example Steve helped me create additional "squarify" formulas for Serum on the Xfer forum. I wanted several versions of "Squarify" (Squarify 25%, 50%, etc..) that would remove just a percentage of the even harmonics instead of removing all of them like the default multi formula "Squarify" would. Steve responded and gave me the formula to do exactly that. Since then I've broken down what he did so I can apply a percentage to the rest of the formulas available in the "Formula Parser".
Yup, I love that the developer of the most badass synth ever devised on the entire planet, answers my questions, problems and suggestions within hours!
34:20 Producer advice from Deadmau5 and Steve Duda: You hear something [in your head], you go for it and when it's close you move over to another facet, you don't obsess over this one detail because you'll lose the whole picture.
I would never finish anything wirhout this advice. Same goes for the deadmau5 mode of selecting i struments: 3-5 per second and just stopping when you have it close enough. You can tweak the knobs for days, and no-one knows the diffdrence. Just make a good composition. If it doesnt stick: make another
what an amazing guy. and he grew up when things like FL and Ableton didn't even exist, just like Joel. these two are really the godfathers of electronic music and mixing in general if you ask me
34:16 this is the hard part for most aspiring EDM producers I think. Nothing is ever perfect, nothing ever sounds the way you were imagining it in your head.... and there are so many knobs to tweak, so many tools, so many plugins, so much that you can do to change it or get closer to the sound that you want 🤯 So it is extremely easy to fall into the trap of obsessing about tiny details and extremely difficult to just say 'this is close enough' and then move onto something else. And in the whole process of obsessing there is a very real danger of losing interest and passion, to the point where you just get fed up and stop working on it all together.
I'm so humbled by Steve every time I hear the way he thinks. He's literally a genius and so down to earth and gentle. Rare combination which I've started to notice more and more lately. Zedd and Skrillex are to me on a similar degree of Genius/Humble ratio.
this is one of the best producer / dj / programmer - whatever we are - "that nerd guy stuff" video ever!!! thx Steve & pyramind, this motivates me keep going on and make my stuff (:
Watching this video, and a stream of Joel using it, makes you understand how electronic music works, and now, when you hear music, you actually relate the graph visuals to what you hear, you see the spread of the voices, the morphing from Saw to Sine, the line travelling along the filter curve rapidly before looping... It makes you realize how much is going on in there.
Wizards are wise. They’re real. They see you but you don’t see them. Think all that Harry Potter stuff is just fantasy? In one sense it is and in another it isn’t.
LFO Tool has also replaced WOW2 Filter as my go to filter plugin in most cases. The fact that LFO Tool can midi trigger it's filter sweeps is enough to give it a huge edge...let alone the sheer number of filters it has and the ability to draw in custom shapes. When I bought WOW2 I was shocked that you couldn't trigger envelopes and Retrigger LFO's with midi or audio.
If you're reading Steve. I just want to say, you are a fucking duda. Cthulhu has helped me so much music wise. I have no training on piano what so ever, just a good ear.. well... 2 actually xD but now i can play the chords i want to play, with a little research on youtube obviously. Just a genius plug in, and i want to thank you with my whole being, you are the fucking man.
Steve if you see this PLEASE make a iOS version of Serum! PLEASE!!! Synthmaster is called that because once you buy their synth you become their slave.
This guy is a MEGA player and still took time to answer my total NOOB question when I bought SERUM a couple weeks ago. He's like nerd Superman...lol FYI: I now know how to work about 6% of SERUM but I can say with confidence, if you don't own it, your life has no meaning! It's freakin' amazing!! It is worth the piddly little $189 they charge. LOL I remember buying a KORG M-1 rack mount for 1100 bucks long ago. The amount of synth you get for a fraction of the cost is mind blowing.
Uhoh... Seems that I am going to spend 300€ on Duda plugins. Absolutely fantastic that there is a demo version of Serum available! Downloading it now. It's either Massive or Serum now, and the consensus in the internets seems to be Serum!
Serum is the more powerful modern version of Massive. But Massive still has its unique weird things that make it great and unique even now. Things you don't notice unless you know Massive inside and out and can compare it to other synths that you know equally well. For example Massive's "Frequency Shifter" insert effect is totally unique compared to other synths. Frequency Shifters don't EVER keytrack...but Massive's does. You can detune the frequency shifter down in Massive to a specific frequency to create that extra gritty flabby nature in basses and it will hold that nature no matter what note u play. Usually with Frequency Shifters you can only play the single note you detune it against bc when you change notes on the keyboard it throws off the detune. Anyways...got long winded.
yes, although when steve duda said "why that one, you didnt even let it finish playing" it was probably cuz like steve said joel knew the sound of the kick he wanted, and he probably wasnt listening for that sound but rather he knew what that kick's wave form would look like and he must have been looking at the space where it shows the waveform of the sample you click on.
@@JusAGuyPassinBy You can't tell how a kick sounds just by looking at the waveform. Waveform shows gain over time, but it doesn't show frequency distribution.

steve is hands down one of the coolest dudes in the music biz

One of the biggest lessons not just for music but for everything: Perfect is the enemy of good

13:48....I think that right there has to be THE BEST advice I've heard from ANY tutorial i've ever watched.
We owe you for all you’ve done for the music community
36:01 The most helpful words I have ever listen. Seriously........

"Yeah, it's still kind of wizard stuff, but now I understand it." - Steve Duda on the point in time when he became an ACTUAL wizard
Wizards are wise. They’re real. They see you but you don’t see them. Think all that Harry Potter stuff is just fantasy? In one sense it is and in another it isn’t.
Great workshop, really inspiring stuff! And some more practical stuff in the other parts as well. A pleasure to listen to
Could listen to Steve talk all day long, legend
Steve, you are an inspiring dude. Thank you for all your work helping music and music tools move forward.
This was fantastic to listen to.... thanks for sharing..
OMG THANKS SO SO MUCH THIS HELPED!!!
Awesome like always!
MY GOD WHAT A BEAUTIFULLY TOLD STORY!!
How could anyone down vote this? Steve is the best.
I love listening to him speak
44:35 Shorten sounds to create space in the mix
Awesome video.
Please Come to the UK and DO one of these!
I am so glad I bought serum!
Steve Duda is, in my opinion, the Roger Linn of this generation
What a dude. Respect.

He just seems like such a laid back, genuinely nice dude. Also he's fucking brilliant
Steve. You're the man
Amazing!!
I like his comparison with massive.
Best series ever
Duda is the man! I hope one day I can work with you and Joel.
And Serum is amazing. Thank you.
Inspiring!

awesome interview and insights...

yooo i was at the skrillex mothership tour too.
Can I just say that Steve Duda kinda looks like a more "mom-like" version of Kurt Cobain.
brilliant dude
I gotta admit I'm in love with his sidetracking ability.
wonderful talk. i'm into origins of names, 'duda' has an interesting story

Wow. Where on earth did that hour go!!!!!!!
:D
What is pyramind?
We're a Music Technology school located in San Francisco!
What's the program on the screen behind Nerve @ 39:25?
That's Ableton Live.
Mastermind!
I'm looking for a specific reference of "Happy accidents" that I saw in the video before - anyone knows this one?
50:00 serum vs massive
So Massive is a kinda "trust your ears"-synth, not "trust your eyes". Like analog style experience.
1:51 I hear voices
am I going insane?
+Adrian Moment Someone must have been talking near the camera. Don't worry, you're not insane! We hear it too :) sorry about that!
28:28 LOLOLOL!!

Epic
Great advice though. It's better to not make money doing what you love than make a fortune doing something you don't care about.
duda is cool mane
steve not seen far time ago.what she doing now :)...
He is cool
