    Thanks for another great video John. My very early XK8 Coupe, VIN AR001201, VCATS 7th/June/1996 has the high-level brake light mounted on the rear parcel shelf......
    I've just sent off my entry to the 2024 calendar.

      Hi Nigel. Got your entry👍
      Your car is indeed very early and possibly supports a theory that it was a limited supply of lights rather than a plan or an oversight that caused all this. I'm sure Jag would have prioritised fitting High-level lamps to cars headed for the other side of the world and therefore limit any later retrofit or complaint-based demand from such distant clients. Could the dates at which the lights became a legal requirement also differ in Oz? The intrigue continues.

    I remember back in 1976, I fitted a high level brake light to my 1970 Escort and got points on my licence for it.
    Also in 1981, I had a 1967 Mercury Cougar with sequential indicators and told to remove them. Now most Audi's have them.

      Ha! I also got told to remove the high-level lights I put in the rear window of my Marina TC Coupe. I was inspired by Barry Lee. (British stock car Oval racer)
      Too bright and distracting was the issue apparently 🤣

    Hi John. Interesting to see behind that boot lid panel and how well painted it all is.
    Have jast sent my humble offering for the photo competition. Thanks for the reminder 😊👍

    I actually have that very same trim clip tool.👍👍 In aircraft we call those extra mounting holes 'hard points'. We call the booming 'oil canning'.

    Another intersting video there John, thankyou. Especially love the secrets of the Xk8 ones in particular. Love with this one, that you get to see areas of our cars that probably very few people see. Love it when you come across old labels and stamped date marks etc, I do get a bit of a buzz over those things, always like unwrapping it, as it were, trying to find out the origins of a car and trying to find the earliest date etc, sounds daft I know😅.
    Anyway, really looking foward to September.😊👍

      Love it whenever you dig into something and find things that nobody ever thought of and that in mind I since you something and ask you if it had lighted buttons on the steering wheel you never got back with me but I saw somewhere else that the person took them buttons off of an old steering wheel and there were places to put light bulbs but none were in there so people who think that their buttons on the steering wheel don't work try taking me button pack off and see if there are places to put the bulbs then the buttons will light up always thought it was a little bit dumb not having buttons on the steering wheel that don't light up

    Strange that they left the brake light off, having clearly planned for it. Perhaps the manufacturer of the light parts was running late in supplying the factory, so Jaguar had to proceed without for a while?

    Hi John, I noticed that beside the calendar you have what appears to be an antique carbon tetrachloride fire extinguisher. Does it still contain CCl4 or have you filled with some other fire extinguishing agent?
    Interesting video by the way, now I know what’s behind the boot panel.

      Hi Joseph. keen eye.
      It now only contains soapy water and is realistically just an ornament. but it would come in handy in a small paper fire.

    My 2004 XK8 has a hard plastic piece that is fitted to the hinge and the wiring is routed through there so that it cannot break.

    Yes 1997 was the year for high level brake lights. In 1996 I bought a brand new Renault Laguna Sport Limited Edition of 500 (100 each of 5 colours). I got stiffed by Renault as after I had paid £14k for mine (and they sold out very quickly), they decided not to make them limited after all and put them into the range at a £2k price reduction but with high level brake light and air con added. I never bought a new car ever again.

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  Рік тому

      I also had a Laguna, and loved it. It stood out in the sea of Vectras and Mondeo's at the time, and was far more comfortable

    Yup, mine is 'sans' high level brake light, although the lack of the lamp doesn't make the lines any neater on the coupé. See you at Gaydon John.

      Im putting the High level brake light on the same shelf as the rear chassis weights and the red knob on the boot lock mech. 'STILL Unsolved'.

      I don't know about the UK, but in the Netherlands, the high level brake lights (or 3rd brake light as we called them) were illegal, untill they became mandatory. I'm pretty sure the same goes for Germany. Jaguar wouldn't be able to get a roadworthiness certificate for any model with them during that time.

    Thanks for the video John. I have problems with my boot switch as it does not open the lid . It opens from the dash and fob ok but not by pushing in the button. May see you on the second of September. How do I get my ticket

      Hi Steve👍 Go to the british motor museum website and look for events. I will have a small bet on it being that wiring near the boot hinge.

    My boot won’t close anymore. What’s the problem? I tried to push it down with more force etc. but it doesn’t close. So it remains unlocked or let’s say unlinked and so open…

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  8 місяців тому

      Is the boot latch already locked before you close the boot lid?
      Has the boot lid been adjusted on its hinges or have they been bent
      Has the boot latch come loose and no longer aligns?

    • @1First1Date1

      @@ToTheGarage I managed to close it, it works now. But now it won’t open with the key anymore. I noticed that the wire which is connected to the electronic unit/mechanism is nearly snapped… I ordered a new string and I hope it works then again with the key.

    You could just check with a multimeter or a 12 volt bulb what this wiring is connected to.

    Can the mounting clips on the boot be removed and reused? Or must new ones be used?
