First get or borrow a cheap OBDII code reader and see what fault has been logged. Its usually a gearbox related fault or a coil related fault. Assuming the restricted performance is not present when you restart the car, Try to establish what triggers the fault message. Is it when you move the shifter? if so from which position to which position. A faulty 'S' Sport switch on the centre console is another common culpret for generating this fault message
I have just learnt that on the older cars the 'Cruise' button by the shifter changes function on some later models, mine has Auto Speed Limiter, so for my car, the button has to be off, down, and then cruise works all the time and when on, button up and LED on, I have speed limiter functions.
Made me realise just what a minimalist I am with car controls. My mate's Range Rover is packed with gadgets, gimmicks, Bluetooth & wifi. I believe he'll be able to drive the car once he graduates from RR uni next year!
Great video. I had no idea about the unusual temperature logic when “auto” gets overridden… It totally explains why my heater blows lukewarm sometimes as I often use the combined windshield/foot air flow button when it’s cold.
I don't know if applies to your car but if you put the mirror switch to the left before selecting reverse, it tips the passenger mirror down and returns when deselected. Also I think you will find the temp sensor is behind the left hand grill. Lots of other bits on mine too!
We had ours nearly 20 years, and had no idea about the key controls for the top, or that you could lower the rear windows with the console roof button...thanks!!!
Hi John May be helpful, if you turn the key on my 2001 XKR to lock the door and hold the key in that position the roof will go up from outside the car. Maybe a new secret?? Please keep up with the great videos Cheers
hi john do you know if i can replace the led lights in the heated seat switches the seats heat up fine but both the leds do not light up thanks tony and keep the videos coming very informative
I learned some useful things thanks John. I did wonder if changing it to external temperature and turning the knob would change the outside temperature? That would be impressive.
i have a XKR 5.0.2011 Not sure i can get the climate control to very cool. I noted the sensor by the steering column , could that have some dust in it to preventing it from working correctly. I had the compressor re gassed in Oct 2020. What's the best way to check the climate control efficiency with the out the inevitable???. Love your tutorials
Hi John. Given the interiors of our cars are quite small. It should be really obvious if the AC is fully working as it gets really Chilly quite quickly. Put a vacuum cleaner Nozle over that little vent (Aspirator) in car it has sucked fluff in. (but it has a very weak fan so its unlikely). Then get a cheap seat thermometer and place its skewer in one of the face level vents, and see if the AC can drop the temperature by at least 10 degrees below ambient. Other things to check are. Is the Pollen Filter clean, as a dirty one will reduce cooling. Do you get the tiny wet patch under the car within 5 minutes when you switch off after a drive with air con on? This is the condensation draining. If not then The drain may be blocked and the AC needs cleaning. Other than that, Its the Inevitable😁 GET IT RE GASSED AGAIN, If it works for more than12 months, then I would just regals it annually. if not then save your pennies and let a specialist take a look.🤞
Hi John is there a way of turning of child lock indefinitely instead of just releasing it with door handle? When you put it into gear it auto locks! Thanks.
Not something that the owner can easily do. It can be programmed out if you can find a Jag dealer who still has the right software. This system and other very similar ones from other manufacturers are mandatory in some countries, and not in others so I believe they can be toggled on and off depending on the territory the car was being shipped into
Hello John, Does your steering wheel telescope mechanism still work? The reach cable appears to be a common failure. I can't find any UA-cam videos showing how best to replace the cable. Can anyone help?
Great job once again john.....your guy from us.....thank you....have you done a video on how to fix the gas door not opening......also my battery goes flat after about a week of not driving it....any advice or a video
Hi Jon. On my xk8. On a smooth drive it's great. But on a rough road or pot holes there a knocking from the rear. It's always been there since I had the car. I had the car over 7 years. It's like a worn Bush knocking. Always goes through the mot OK. Do not know if you heard of this before. Rick Murphy
Hello John. Greetings from Los Angeles, CA. Your channel is an excellent resource!!..I have a lovely black metallic 1997 cabriolet...I love my car. Everything is exceptional.....but...I can't seem to make a viable OBD2 connection to it with my foxwell reader...although the reader powers on at the plug, there is some problem with communication...checked fuse #6 and it's fine...so is fuse #8.....any thoughts?
Hi villa. My Old reader is much cheaper unit than yours and works well so it does suggest a bad Old socket/connections? Anybody else had this problem and knows what to look for?
thank you I did not know what the two buttons by the gear indicator were for. the cruise control and the sport button. I only drive 8 miles one way once a week at most on low traffic clear days but right at the end I like to "get on it" for about a quarter mile. any harm in using the sport button for that? I have 83000 miles on my 2001 XKR convertible (silver)
Hi TTG, i am (United States) looking to get a 2004/2005/2006 Jaguar XK8 some time soon, can you pls clarify what suspension do these cars have? AirMatic or regular? thank you!
Hi All the x100's (steel bodies XK8's 1996 to 2006) have standard coil springs and wishbones. None use air suspension. Some models will have 'CATS' dampers/shock absorbers. These are computer controlled active units. Brilliant but expensive to replace. You can tell a CATS car because when you lift the bonnet there is a wire attached to the top of each strut/damper
Depends on the cause If its a gearbox glitch then turning off the engine and restarting it will do the job. Put a cheap OBD11 reader on your car and it will at least tell you which system is making your car nervous about providing you with full power
John, completely random this but I thought I’d ask anyway. Any prospect of you looking to sell the X358 anytime soon? I’m looking for one to compliment my X351 and yours would be perfect and exactly what I’m looking for, price permitting Ofcourse
Eventually. but hard to put a time line on it. Enjoying her at the moment and doing a few jobs off camera which will make her mechanically A1. Also getting the rear Tv's to work just for the sake of it.😁 How soon are you after another toy?
@@ToTheGarage completely understand. I’m looking for one fairly soon, I’m not the most patient of people! There’s a couple of cheap ones on the trader at the moment but they are a fair old way away from me

Sorry about the email I just sent you saw your video on the new calendar and I got the message about buying it. Keep up your super work. Carlos 👍
Had my XK8 for a month now and didn't realise the button on the left of sport armed the cruise control. All my paperwork is in Japanese. So thanks!
No Problem👍. Have you imported it to the UK or are you based in Japan Philip?

Happy to help Stephen

Thanks John, I will explore and see where it takes me.
What does the red and blue marked wheel between the middle airvents do, why is it there in combination with the AirCon?
It can stop the middle face level vent from feeding Cold air while still allowing the side face level vents to do so, or Vica versa

Hi David. Mine still works. But never had to repair one. Yet....
Let me know if you find the answer
On my 2004 XKR the centre console switch doesn't arm the cruise control. It's just a speed limiter button.
I can only agree with you regarding the XK8 cabin being a "happy place"
👍 Sure is Stephen
Do the steering wheel buttons light up I have a 98 XJR and they do not like up that is hard to believe in a high-dollar Jag

I keep mine on a clever charger, can be on for weeks in not months at a time, low battery voltage on the XK8 can be a source of great pain

I would suspect damper bushes or the exhaust knocking on the rear bumper

None whatsoever. Enjoy
What does that yellow oblong bar mean underneath the mph gauge I have a red one with the yellow and my car won’t start
Yellow bar means you have non critical warning messages.
Red bar means you also have a critical message.

Check your battery condition. Check the little dust gate closes when you take the ignition key out of the ignition barrel.
