Sheesh that drum track is hot. Crazy how much dynamic control and an interesting room can contribute to a solid recording. Also p smart to line up the off-axis of the 57 with the hats, noted. Also, instead of buying gear, maybe invest in microphones (within reason lol). Especially when working with analog, I think they really expand the color palette. Plus it’s fun to pair them with preamps to see what happens

I was kinda ready for you to show up all those "one micers" by sawing a 57 in half and blowing them all away with your half-mic drum sound! Anyway....carry on Travis!
It's really funny with the newer generation of audio engineers. We are so drilled -3 and +3 boosts and cut, maybe -6 +6 at max with online training material. Meanwhile in the old days, they would just turn it until it sounded great. I knew an oldschool engineer from the 60's which called 6db boosts a "small boost" and would often give kicks closer to 12 around 60hz. Me being under the 30, I still cringe at the sight of it. Sounds interesting thanks for sharing! They are sending over an MXR revelation to try out. I wonder what it sounds like

@travisraab are you running your bass into the compressor and preamp racks and out of the racks to the line in on the tascam tracks?
No. Bass straight into the mpx.
The early van halen albums kick was recorded with a sm57
