    I just got this jig set for Christmas. I need to slightly alter the shape on my bowl gouge slightly and will do it on the Tormek as it's a very small change. What I've seen on the both included video and this one is that you always sharpen with the wheel rotating away from the tool. I get this for maintenance sharpening but since I'm changing the tool shape I'm wondering if I could have the wheel rotating toward me. I have a theory as to the reason but would value your advice. I don't have the dry grinder adapter so this will definitely happen on the Tormek regardless of which direction the wheel turns. I'm using the stock wheel.
    Happy New Year!

    I am completely new to using a power tool to sharpen tools. However, I am considering getting into bowl turning and my sharpening method must therefore adapt. The Tormek machine seems my best bet, because I dont want to make sparks that might set off an explosion in my multi-purpose work room. I wonder if the tormek turning kit could be used to shape a 55 degree fingernail grind on a bowl gouge. Thanks for your videos.

  • @lmallard3788

    Is it safe to assume that a new bowl gouge needing a certain shape should be ground with the standard wheel and then for honing that shaped gouge, the diamond wheel could be used?

    Hello at the start of the video for the roughing gouge time on video is 51 .21 seconds you speak about a recipe for the 45° angle. For the bevel 55/hole B. Why is this stated here can I use the TTS 100 for this Jig I can’t understand this part of the clip many thanks

    • @TormekSharpening
      @TormekSharpening  2 роки тому

      Hej Vincent,
      to be honest we don´t get your question as you answered it yourself?! You use the TTS-100 Turning Tool Setter with hole B to measure the distance and set the Protrusion P on 55 (on the back). By following this you can set the angle to 45°. You can have a look into the instruction for the TTS-100 for further clarification: www.tormek.com/media/1911679/hb-10-en-v104-tts-100.pdf
      Stay sharp & safe!

    Sorry, not a wood turning question... can you use the thin leather wood turning strop to deburr serrated knives?

    • @TormekSharpening
      @TormekSharpening  2 роки тому

      Yes, that should work if it fits. Always hard to say as serated knives can be very different.

      Hej Manuel Barreto, both works fine, good is the SB-250 Blackstone andbest the Diamond Wheels due the advantage that they keep the shape and don't nedd to be dressed and they keep the shape. I would go for the DF-250 Diamond Wheel, if you are a very experinenced wood turner and have a good cutting technic a DE-250 is good for you, due the fact that you just "touch up" the edge and don't need to sharpen a bit more. Please read also about our different Diamond Wheels on our web page, you'll find a load of detailed information there too. /Wolfgang

    On planer blades and circular slitter blades do you need to buy the complete kits or do they adapt to other jigs I already have. Is it possible to buy a drill sharpened by a Tormek? I sharpen a lot of drill bits by hand. Your system looks very good but also very expensive. I would like to give a drill a try before I buy. A drill about 1/2" would be great.

    • @TormekSharpening
      @TormekSharpening  2 роки тому

      We ourselves do not sell drills. You could check the Tormek forum or some Tormek groups (all not moderated from us) and ask there for experiences.

    Question: what is the difference in sharpening dry or with water on the diamond stone? Is it only for protecting your knife/tool from heating with water, or other benefits? Thanks!

    • @FritzPenzenstadler
      @FritzPenzenstadler 3 роки тому

      I do it dry with a CBN disc. There is no need to cool. And I'm looking forward to the next trade show, where I can ask the CBN disc manufacturers and get their advice. Tormeks Diamond discs might be different, the recommendation is, to use water with the diamond disc. The life expectation of the disc should be extended and the result should be better, my dealer says.

    • @TormekSharpening
      @TormekSharpening  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Fabio, you can use it dry and wet. The diamond wheels are recommended for the lower speeds like of the Tormek compared with CBN which is recommended for higher speeds, CBN is halve as hard as the diamond and the CBN wheels have a higher tolerance in the diameter which need always adjustments to get the right angel on your tool when changing between the wheels.
      We recommend the Tormek diamond wheels to use with water for this reasons: the metal dust is collectet in the water and not distributed in the air, which is not very healthy, otherwise you should use a mask (when useing CBN with higher speed). The woodturning tools are not stainless just rust retardant, the ACC-150 protect not only the diamond wheel even your tools. The water keeps also your diamond wheel clean and works like a lubrication which gives a more precis handling. By that speed a Tormek has, there is no risk for overheating the tools.

    I have the T4, I’m hoping to get the tnt808 for all my turning tools so I can get rid of my grinder.
    Just want to double check there’s no reason the T4 isn’t a good option?🤷‍♂️

    • @TormekSharpening
      @TormekSharpening  3 роки тому

      Hi, sure you can use the T-4 for the TNT-808. The difference is only that the T-8 is more rigid and gives you more possibilities of the choice of different sharpening stones /wheels. If you turn more often, than the T-8 could be the better choice, but if you turn not so frequently the T-4 is fine.

Is it possible to buy it separately. By the way thank you so much for the sharpening courses ! Nice job !

    t8 is good, but the standard wheel is very tiresome for shaping. I have the complete kit, but I feel like I need to spend another $300+ for the diamond wheel.

    • @TormekSharpening
      @TormekSharpening  3 роки тому

      Hello! I agree, it can take some time to shape/reshape a tool, since it is designed to sharpen an existing edge in first hand. Our best tip if you got the SG-250 or SG-200 Original Grindstone is to use the coarse side of the SP-650 Stone Grader quite frequently, to keep the grindstone as aggressive as possible. If you reshape a lot of tools, the DC-250 or DC-200 Coarse Diamond Wheel could be a good investment. If that takes too long for your liking and you own a bench grinder, you should have a look at the BGM-100 Bench Grinder Mounting Set. Glad you like our machines! Keep on turning and stay sharp! 🤩

    • @theinstitute
      @theinstitute 3 роки тому

      @@TormekSharpening thanks for the reply. Any sharpener is eventually going to need to shape an edge. I'd say a skew chisel for turning takes the longest to shape. A lot of HSS steel there. Yes, there's the bench grinder, but it's too easy to draw the temper. My goal is to take LESS time to get back to work. Many hours of monotonous sharpening leads me to believe I need a coarse diamond wheel, $$$ 😒

    • @TormekSharpening
      @TormekSharpening  8 місяців тому

      Hej Brian, it's a complete different sharpening. The advantage with the Tormek is that you sharpen a minimum of material, just that you need to sharp away and with not heating up the material as the most important part is honing, this gives you the best sharpness. The jigs give you the precise angel and shape of the edge again and over again in a blink of an eye.
