    Exactly right. Cats around the garden are much less trouble than an army of rats, rabbits, and squirrels that will have a feast.

    Introducing non venomous local snakes that eat rats and venomous snakes would also greatly help.

    I have 3 cats who seem to think my garden is a litter box smh. I use straw as mulch and it deters but doesn’t prevent 100%. I don’t think it’s toxic because I’ve eaten sweet potato greens from the patch they seem to favorite and I seem ok lol

      Also I used to see and hear mice or rats until they came to live here. The last time I saw a mouse or snake, they were being bodied by the cats! Good trade off lol

    My cat has been pooping in my raised beds and I am very discouraged to grow food in there now because he has killed some rodents and I don't want him to transmit diseases. I am thinking about taking the top few inches of the soil out, composting it, and then I would also probably do a water/hydrogen peroxide treatment on my raised beds. Would you still recommend using raised beds after cats use them as litter boxes?

      If its your cat maybe you can try to train it to poo in the toilet. No joke! My aunt trained her cat to poo in the toilet and now that cat is very protective about that toilet. She hates when anyone uses it. She even tries to flush!

    • @SH-jy6lc

      There are training toilet seats for this. Maybe get it.

      As for peroxide... I read that even bleach do not kill toxoplasmosis... Only boiling can. Maybe do soil solarization? But even then it doesnt get hotter than 60 C. Tough one. Maybe replace the soil?

    I watched a program on agriculture in Israel and they were using barn owls. This year I'm building barn owl boxes for my N. Idaho U.S. organic property as husband doesn't want cats and I don't want rodents. I'll let you guys know if it works.

    Our cats kill baby snakes definitely keep the population down. We saw a big difference after a year. Also they rarely kill birds, 4 cats in 7 years only 2 birds. But lizards and snakes - done.

    • @wheelmanstan
      @wheelmanstan 4 роки тому

      yeah cats don't kill anywhere near the amount of birds I've seen reported, killing birds and squirrels is a something not all cats can do and usually they gotta be feral cats that were taught it by their mothers, and if you have a white cat then it's at best maybe killing a dove or something big and slow because animals will spot it a mile a way, cats will massacre everything else though, they're born killing machines, designed perfectly by evolution to kill and they love to do it, all cats can kill birds but they gotta get their claws onto it, and you know when they get one because there will be feathers

      In rural farm areas, ranchers drag their dead cattle to the back of their property with their tractor and let the natural decay process happen.

    I had a Jack Russell that kept my gardens clean of rodents, rabbits, etc until she died. She killed cats, though... After she died, I had terrible experiences with 'vermin' destroying my garden until we got a cat. Now, they keep the root crops safe!

    Cats are trainable and are great for reducing rodent populations. One year my pea and bean seeds pretty much got cleaned out by chipmunks mostly. The cats that are around have kept the chipmunks clean out of the yard, unless there are other factors. Great year for peas and beans too. :)

    On top of that they kill the natural wild birds they don't take care of the gophers like you would think they could I still see mice and they kill my own chickens.
    And they don't eat them for food!!! I have two house cats and that's where they should be!!! They have their shots they're neutered and they're fat and healthy and happy.
