  • The internet has been flooded with memes after Russia's lunar hopes were dashed. Russia's Luna-25 crashed into the moon, leading to a failure of its first such mission in the last 47 years. Russia's space agency Roscosmos explained how the crash happened and announced the opening of a probe into it. However, speculation online suggests that Europe was behind the unfortunate crash. Watch for more details.

Soviet program was notable in setting many records in space exploration, including the first intercontinental missile (R-7 Semyorka) that launched the first satellite (Sputnik 1) and sent the first animal (Laika) into Earth orbit in 1957, and placed the first human in space in 1961, Yuri Gagarin. In addition, the Soviet program also saw the first woman in space, Valentina Tereshkova, in 1963 and the first spacewalk in 1965. Other milestones included computerized robotic missions exploring the Moon starting in 1959: being the first to reach the surface of the Moon, recording the first image of the far side of the Moon, and achieving the first soft landing on the Moon. The Soviet program also achieved the first space rover deployment with the Lunokhod programme in 1966, and sent the first robotic probe that automatically extracted a sample of lunar soil and brought it to Earth in 1970, Luna 16.[3][4] The Soviet program was also responsible for leading the first interplanetary probes to Venus and Mars and made successful soft landings on these planets in the 1960s and 1970s.[5] It put the first space station, Salyut 1, into low Earth orbit in 1971, and the first modular space station, Mir, in 1986.[6] Its Interkosmos program was also notable for sending the first citizen of a country other than the United States or Soviet Union into space.[7][8]

A rather unfortunate situation in relation to the Luna 25 mission. However it is an accepted fact that anything can wrong in space missions despite the best planning and all possible precautions taken. No doubt the causes for the failure will be thoroughly investigated and analysed for future missions. Even then there is no absolute guarantee that everything will go according to plans. The scientists and engineers will always keep their fingers crossed until an entire mission is completed successfully. Let us hope and pray that Chandrayan 3’s lunar landing is completed successfully. Wishing all the best and good luck to the scientists and engineers at ISRO. 🤞🏻🙏

As long as the interests of India and the Soviet Union converged, they were aligned. When those interests diverge, they will and should no longer be aligned.

Russia has landed on the moon 3 times before, so do not feel sorry for them. Rather ask how and why they failed this time around? Yes Space is very hard but negligence, complacency, having no real purpose for this moon mission but a reaction to news that the US wants to return to the moon and set up a moon base as a transit point for their Mars missions and also that India has ambitions to land on the moon. Russia felt left out and challenged. They should do things properly but it seems they do not have all the components they need due to sanctions. What a shame.

The craze for being the first country to do the impossible is driving most government to go nuts and putting undue pressure on it's space organization , space scientist and engineers to achieve it without failing . @@MrNeversweat Not much. There is a lack of experience and knowledge. In recent decades, Russia exploration of space has been limited to Earth orbit. The engineers who led the lunar missions back then no longer exist. They are either deceased or to old. They are no longer useful. There is no longer any global cooperation. Russia does not have access to the global satellite network like NASA and ESA have. Consequently, there are large gaps in satellite communications. Enough reasons that make a successful moon mission extremely difficult.
