Luna 25 Russia's Space Endeavor Ends as a Sad day for Science, as it Crashed on the Moon's Surface after 50 Years, of Restarting it's Lunar Mission.
Let's dive into the events, that might have led to this outcome.
After the separation of the third-stage boosters and the crucial Fregat engine burn, the spacecraft's upper section prepared for separation.
Simultaneously, the Luna 25 lander executed two precise correction maneuvers to fine-tune its course.
This stage marked the lunar transfer and orbit insertion phase, where the trajectory was aligned with the moon's orbit.
The Luna 25 adjusted its positioning for an optimal landing site.
It is at this stage the thrusters of the Luna 25 lander, possibly failed to provide the necessary thrust during the pre-orbital stage.
The Luna 25 thrusters struggled to calculate and counteract the moon's gravitational pull, resulting in an uncontrolled spinning motion.
When it was time for the thrusters to initiate the de-braking process in outer space, they were unable to sufficiently decelerate the lander.
As a consequence, the lander entered the moon's orbit without the activation of the required thrusters, or it might have pushed, the thrusters a little bit too much, required for a soft landing.
These events caused the Luna 25 to spin uncontrollably and ultimately experience a hard crash landing, bringing an abrupt end to its mission.

When I saw the news of Luna 25 crashing into the moon, It made me sad, and as an Indian I really wanted both Chandrayaan 3 and Luna 25 to land successfully on the South Pole of Moon, it was indeed a sad day.

There is no place for politics in science, it was actually a very ambitious mission, that, if successful, would allow humans as a species and not just Russia, to potentially streamline their lunar exploration by extracting water from the ice on the moon.

It's worth noticing that it's was first attempt of Roscosmos to land at Moon's South Pole, so no wonder that it was unsuccessful. As mentioned below first attempt was conducted by India in 2019 and it also crashed

Chandrayan 2 crashed in 2019 when at the very last moment during soft landing process, comms were lost with the lander from the ground stations. But about Chandrayan 1, that crash was a deliberate one as that mission was not about any soft landing attempt, it was an attempt to check whether south pole of moon contains any water in ice format or not and chandrayaan 1 was hence a successful mission since that mission did prove that lunar south pole contains water under its soil in ice format.

Quick correction: There is nothing innovative in using radioactive material as heat sources. RTGs have been using that technique for well over half a century.
RTG is used as an electrical energy source, not as heat source alone.

Amazing animations. Really well done. Orbital mechanics are a bit off as the engines would be firing backwards when entering lunar orbit not forwards. I appreciate the overview though. Sad they lost space craft.
