- LAHAKAI SAILING // ⛵️ S1 Ep42 // Are we asking too much from this tiny space?? Our boat restoration project hits a snag as we try to get creative and fit the worlds smallest home office and command center in a tiny corner of our 34" salvage sailboat. We're trying to have it all in this boat refit but as we almost give up on this woodworking delema, we make a breakthrough! Check out what we come up with and let us know what you think of our solution!

Did you like our creative solution to finalizing our nav desk / home office?? Would you have done anything differently? If you have seen other creative seating solutions in small boats, let us know! Thanks for tuning in and we hope you liked this weeks episode 😁⛵ Cheers!
A functional/sturdy backrest you won't see in any production boats ... kudos to the Lahakaians and woodworkers.
I love your dog he remind me of my dog so cute 👍👍💯
I love the backrest and the cabinets. Wow blown away
the door should be incorporated into the backrest, so not so much a door, but a front piece of the seat, this would also protect hitting the protruding hard edge of the backrest when pulled out.
A double surface seat with the top section rising as a back rest with a hydraulic arm would have worked.
Love the work you are doing on your boat
Thanks!! Cheers!
I can't believe that you didn't get the backrest recline too..😉🙂👍
ahh haha we thought about that but then thought it was pushing our luck... but I suppose if we had made it thicker we could have made a slight incline in the "drawer" itself. Orrr perhaps now we can make a pillow that is ergonomic since we have 5cm to play with... Oh no now you got us thinking 😂😂
Finally I see glue being used, not just screws !
Lots of glue, paint and more screws to come! We promise! And spoiler, we're going to take everything out of the boat... 🙃
Its a nice clever design however I would have thought that a fold up section from the seat itself with built in scissor supports (like a fold up table would have been far simpler and stronger.
Yup, nice seat back. I've been using the fridge ;) but yours will probably not be a portable fridge...
That backrest is a great solution. I would think about some support against it bending if you lean against it to much. I think this can be folded or stored in the space behind the drawer.
But why a door to close the gap? Just take the part of the bench backrest/cover for the storage space and use it as a front for the drawer. You will need a seperate cushion for the bench backrest either way, but you don't have a door that might rattle while open, and you won't need any hinges for the door.
This is also a great idea! We wanted to avoid having an extra piece of cushion visible so we think we can hid the door with the fabric. It’s a theory we are putting to the test! Otherwise it could be nice, like you said, to have it slide out and not have to remove the cushion all together. Thanks for the feedback! Cheers!
@@lahakai Oh, I didn't thought about avoiding having to many seperate cushions for the bench backrest. But I understood you in such a way that the cushions on those storage doors are fixed to the wooden part (but in a way to take them of if needed for cleaning or such) so that you wouldnt have to move them seperately when opening this storage compartments.
If you just have one or two cushions for the bench backrest it seems to me that it would in a way hinder the opening of this sliding backrest.
Anyway to me this solution for a bench/single seat looks even more creative and practical then the sliding desktop surface you created for your workspace.
With the best wishes for a sucessful outfitting of your boat from Northern Germany.
You can use the volume between the slides to store some items.
Those are good little spaces arnt they… perhaps we should!
Fernando is an amazing finish carpenter! Love the caption of Luke and your dog, they were really enjoying the project. Could you use the backrest as a spice rack? Incredible interior, your going to love the finish product.
Great idea for the sliding back rest. Now use the back of the back rest for a spice, pepper sauce and/or tool rack!
Interesting idea for the backrest! I would want to make sure the slides are easily replaceable and there was some kind of backing plate on the backside to spread the load. Also, I think making the sliding backrest be part of the couch backrest, instead of making a door might work better. Keep at it!
Its beautiful but i hope for you that it in bic waves strong is, the idee is good
Never give up, you two are amazing and the little dog lol, luv your vids, I can imagine the end result and it’s going to look absolutely awesome, take care everyone.😊😊😊😊👏🏻👏🏻🇬🇧👍🏻
Thank you so much! Cheers!!
The idea of doing this slide out backrest is good, with one caveat : it’s purely cantilever, and will fail pretty quickly, unless you install a vertical support at the cantilevering end of the backrest, which can also be retractable and fixed either in the corpus of the bench corpus, or swivel down from the backrest and clip-fixed to the bench. Don’t underestimate the cantilever forces acting on the slides, it will tear and wear quickly.
We were concerned about this as well. So we chose standard but durable drawer sliders so in the event it does break we can easily and inexpensively change it ourselves. Our biggest challenge was the limited amount of space we had, as you can see we cut a big hole out the back to give more room.
The 100 lb. Drawer slides, two of them, could handle a person standing on the backrest. However, lateral loading from the body and sea motion could tear away the screws holding the backrest. I’d use bolts rather than screws, with washers.
@einarquay Ah great point and solution! Theres certainly enough space to do that. Thanks for the tip!
@@lahakai believe me, you will regret it, if you don’t give it a strong support, as the slides are not made for the kind of stress they will encounter, which will end up in shock loads way over 200lbs, and pose a huge amount of threat of bodily harm.
My Gosh! how good are those guys, so creative, Awesome concepts turned into reality and working. Great Job everyone.
That's a good idea for backrest I glad you mentioned about a cushion with it as well otherwise the gap would cause backache looking forward to next week's episode 😊😊
Thanks! Yeah, we will go with the same size cushion we will be using on the bench to be comfy and uniform. We'll let you know how it goes once its installed!
nice
Do you think your nav station cabinet door might be a desk sweeper?
excellent idea for the backrest. there's even room for a cushion.
Absolutely unique design. I have never seen a retractable backrest like that. You might want to be cautious about using it underway with any kind of sea. If the boat lurches suddenly and Luke falls against the backrest with his full weight, it is likely to rip it out (not to mention the damage it could do to Luke!) Once again, excellent video, editing, narration, and choice of music. You're nailing it.
Excellent point! We actually didn’t think about using it at sea, more when we are editing videos and working for long periods. You are probably right that it best keep it stored when there are waves. Glad you like the design! Cheers!!
@@lahakai some of those drawer slides are rated to very high loads, i have seen ones 200kg+
I wanted, and I always wanted, and I wanted very strongly.
This is a phrase an Italian playwright, Vittorio Alfieri, said in 1783 in Siena, so much so that he had his servant tie him to the chair until he finished writing the play. Even finding difficult solutions, one should never give in.
However, I am not convinced by the backrest; if a slim person like me of 120 kg leans on it, it breaks through after a while.
I thought an easier solution would be to turn the work surface 90° and you would have the existing cabinet as a backrest.
Hi great guys
Reminds me of some phone booths I designed, for a lawyer resource center. I did just what they asked me, but when I went to finished facility, they told me I made them too comfortable and people were making them their all day office.
Ahhh well, maybe they should have had you to do their offices as well!
Great design. You can put a couple of shelves in the backrest for small items.
G'day Lori and Luke, I loved the music on this vid.❤❤❤❤ Thank you both.❤❤❤❤
Well, thank you Wally! Glad you enjoyed it! Lukes the music master 🎧
@@lahakai It seems Luke and I have the same taste in a few things Lori. I think I even saw him sipping a Brahma one time.
Great minds think alike 😉
Love the amazing idea of the back rest
Great idea! The other hing I really like is your use of exposed plywood. Am I right in Assuming the wood veneer is varnished along with the edges?
Thanks! Actually none of the wood is finished yet. We are modeling everything still, then we will start doing the finishing. But right you are that those edges should be sealed with something.
I am slightly behind you two in my refit of a steel sailboat, a Bruce Roberts 36. I am planning to use MDO signboard (or crezon), for the furniture. I plan to coat the paper side with a tung oil and the rest with a light clear epoxy, In a few strategic spots I'll use Wilson plastic laminate in bright colours as door facings.
soak the edges in epoxy.
Great to see a plan come together keep going guys cheers n beers Marty Australia
Thanks Marty! 🍻
I absolutely love that design I had somewhat of the same idea but my design was just a single board without the drawer slides do you mind if I use that design in my boat
Thanks! We considered using just a single board but the depth of the cabinet wasn't enough left to support the slide fully pulled out - that's where the drawer slides came in. We actually modified this after we got some great feedback on it and made it a workable drawer as well. We'll post updates on that soon! You can certainly use the idea, and let us know if you improved upon it. Cheers! ⛵️
Bonjour, superbes vidéos, j'aimerais savoir comment sont fixés vos cloisons sur la coque?
Merci beaucoup
Jérôme
its look very good, great ideas 😋
Thanks 😊
Never make it easy when you can complicate things.
Exactly!
Very innovative 🎉❤
Thanks a lot 😊 Cheers!
I'm surprised that these craftsmen have not made use of the hot glue trick for making batten patterns.
That's either got to be your own factory or that must have cost a fortune to design and build at a workshop like that
I wonder if you need further reinforcement on the back rest. I’m not convinced it will stand the test of time.
What do you cover the open sides of the plywood with?
Acho interessante.
Hello.. I want to know how to fix a plywood with a metal ship boby.
Hi! To attach our plywood furniture to our hull, we attached wood blocks on the frames of the hull. Our boat already had holes in the frames in most places from the original build but the wood blocks can also be attached with Sikaflex. Then any furniture pieces created in the boat are attached with screws to these hardwood pieces securing them and keeping them in place.
@@lahakai Thanks a Lot miss. It’s helpful speech for me.
I'd hate to see the bill from Mobili Mare! I don't think Laurie likes dogs....
You say "WE" all the time but all the work was done by other people.
It's interesting watching this build. If it weren't for the over the top rediculous narration that happens it would actually be enjoyable watching. But I'm still trying to figure out which is worse, that stupid waste of space desk or the absolutely retarded backrest. It's honestly like 2 six year olds were given permission to mess up a completely good boat anyway they want to
Better to be children enjoying their imaginations than adults destroying others
@lahakai sorry to have an opinion, and not just parroting congrats..if you didn't want honesty, just say so or turn off the comments. Good luck to you and your mickey mouse boat
Still you will not introduce your cute dog. If he is invisible in your project, I am invisible in yours. Checking out, bye!
Our pup was introduced way back in episode 14 where we adopted him: ua-cam.com/video/re4mwSQ8yLg/v-deo.html
