What I like about your channel is that you show the triumphs and disasters instead just showing the best bits were you are perfect, I have started to plant vegetables myself because it is easier to learn from someone who still learning as well then from an expert who doesn't make mistakes.

This year I decided to take care of my 120 square metres swamp full of bind weed a.k.a my garden on a Belgian soil. We bought this house in November 2022, but we didn't touch the garden yet (no budget for that). I started working in it in February, with no tools available at the start, so I basically spend a couple of sessions just ripping the tall grass and weeds with my bare hands xD That's when I found your channel Emma, and I've been watching ever since :) In three weeks we have someone coming to put the drainage and to level the ground.
I have been dreaming of a pumpkin patch, but in air, on the archways. So I ordered the archways from Amazon, just like you; I plan to make them future-proof, at least for a couple of years, with T-posts and additional metal fence on top of the archways. I also ordered wood for raised beds. Last week I sow 8 pumpkin varieties and most of those plants germinated and I am so happy! Now I understand the excitement we often see in your videos! Tomorrow I am going to replant the pumpkins to bigger pots. Fingers crossed that everything goes according to plan and in September I will have plenty of different pumpkins

Hi Emma, I just wanted to say thank you for continuing to share your allotment journey, ESPECIALLY the difficult parts and the things that go wrong. It really helps to stay motivated in my own home garden knowing other people are struggling along with their successes. And how you keep just moving on and whacking it in.
My mother, who loved gardening, passed away in January and this winter and spring I’ve really thrown myself into it with your inspiration, and it has really helped my grieving process.
And lastly I just wanted to say I’m so impressed with what you’ve done with your second plot! 🎉
    Thank you!

The part of the corn plant that you eat IS the seed. If your corn get pollinated by a type that doesn’t match what you planted, you will get crossed corn seed. If you plant popcorn or ornamental corn with sweet corn, your sweet corn may not be eatible. The corn that you get this year, can and will be affected by cross-pollination. So you have to be careful what types of corn you plant in your garden.

    • @TheSnuffy1994
      @TheSnuffy1994 2 місяці тому

Ornamental corn I can imagine but crossing with popcorn would surely still make your sweetcorn edible maybe just less sweet right? The corn for popcorn i believe is soft initially but you dry it on the cob to make it popcorn.

It massively affects the taste unfortunately. The only way to do it is to stagger the planting so they pollinate at different times.

Emma. I was watching on another channel and this lady she made sourdough bread and what she ended up doing to get rid of her slugs. She would smear some of that sourdough starter on cardboard in her garden, and at night she would gather go out and gather up all the slugs that was on the cardboard because they’re attracted to the self rising East in the bread I know there’s no Easton sourdough, but there’s some thing about it that attracts the slugs

I love harvesting potatoes too! It’s always so satisfying. My husband and his friend have taken on an allotment this year and there is a rogue potato in one of the beds. I can’t wait to see what sort of potatoes it’s grown! I agree with you about getting your plants as big as you can before planting them out. They are definitely more resilient to pests and also don’t taste as sweet to the slugs when they’re bigger. It’s a fine line though - too big and they might not want to grow on.

It was so nice to hear the "Emma's allotment" music today. I'm glad to hear that you had a nice mental break on your camping trip. One caution I want to throw out there...please be careful leaning over those canes when you're pushing them in. I don't want one of them to snap and stab you in the stomach. 😭

Hi Emma, I learned the hard way that planting sweet corn and mirror corn ruins the sweet corn because they pollinate each other. We all live and learn as we go lol

Since you have more potatoes you want to wait till they flower and start to die the Green Part will get kinda yellow. That will provide you so many more potatoes those would have produced a lot more for you but it’s also ok to harvest for the tiny potatoes too.

I’m the same with potatoes. 🥔 grew them for the first time last year. The best bit is you have no idea what’s happening under the soil and you put your fork in and then these fresh golden nuggets appear!! Brilliant.

I had a Robin friend who ate from my hand. We got used to meeting in a particular spot as I put mealworms there on the regular. I’d rest my outstretched hand with the mealworms on the edge of a pot so Robin would come to me. So not in mid-air, just open palmed, resting on a surface. I have the pictures, some of my favourite ones ☺️

The reason you had potatoes growing in the bed could be that they weren't dug up. When you pull up potatoes you leave some in the ground.

  • @kazpaul75

I think I've messed up with my sweetcorn after not having enough labels and playing musical pots so they got mixed up. I've ended up with 3 beds, one for pretty sure they're sweetcorn, one for most likely red popping corn and one for haven't got a flipping clue 😂 It'll be interesting to see what I end up with!
I would leave the sweetpeas in if you put runner beans in for your teepee and just let them grow and twine together. I have perennial sweetpeas (everlast) that come back big and strong every year, perhaps you could sow some of those so you've got a head start on some that have a good, strong root system already each year.

There is an ancient growing technique called the 3 sisters, you would plant sweetcorn with something like courgette on the ground and some kind of bean or pea up the sweetcorn. 3 crops from one area of land in one go. It is possible to companion plant .I'm doing sweetcorn with yellow courgette in between. Love watching your adventures. Keep going 👍

Emma, you did OK with the corn you planted the corn staggered like I think it was two or three weeks apart that will be OK with the corn and plus they are pretty far apart from each other so I don’t think they’ll cross pollinate but if they did cross pollinate Your right it will affect the seeds and the seeds is what you eat in corn so it will change the taste of corn but like I said you stagger the planting and plus it’s far apart you did OK

Hi Emma, I’m currently trying a product called ‘Envii feed and protect’ or Envii feed and fortify’ and there is a 10% off fir first time buyers too. I have only been using it a week and it seems to be doing ok. There have definitely been less slugs and where they ate my dahlia leaves badly, it’s certainly not ‘more’ eaten so could be worth a go.

Sweetcorn doesn’t like to be transplanted. They quickly put a tap root down (very early) and if they’re in a pot that tap root becomes stunted and they then don’t grow properly
