I'm Korean, but we lived in Miami(and in Doral) for 8 full years! Two of my three sons were born in Miami and Hialeah, so you can feel how rooted we were there. There was a Pilon factory near by my home in Doral, and I loved to drive by the site when they were roasting the coffee beans. Now we moved to Texas, and I miss a bit of Miami everyday. The coladas, cortaditos, empanadas, arepas, the Sedano market, Publix and Winn Dixies, the fresh squeezed jugo naranja, the Argentinian steak places, chimichuri, and of course the Brazilian churrascos... The bright smiles.
But in Texas we have a lot of good variety of fruit and vegetables from Mexico and the RGV. I lived/worked in Miami 14 years now back in my home state of Texas
Here, in México, we make "cuban coffee" which is normal coffee, but with a shot of cuban rum, and we "flame" it with a lighter, cinnamon and the rum... Delicious...
That "Cuban coffee machine" is actually an Italian macchinetta, or moka pot, invented by Bialetti. You never tamp the coffee when putting it into the filter or you will under-extract the coffee.. You never put it on high heat - it needs to come to a boil at a medium heat or you'll burn the coffee. It should not splatter when coming out of the spout but rather come out nice and slow - you may even create a natural crema if you get it right.

Cuba was colonized by the Spanish so the European influence perhaps stuck somewhere along the way... no disrespect to Italians but to latinos and most “westerners” the use of these Hispanic coffee brands to make this and the steps is what makes it “cafe Cubano”
Since the stovetop espressomaker was first invented in 1933 by Bialetti it is not that long of a tradition compared to other coffee making methods such as the turkish coffee which is from the 15th century or even filter coffee which was invented in 1908 by Melitta Benz in Germany. But it is a damn good way of making coffee if you do it right and don't boil the coffee or burn the beans. The cuban way is too sweet for my taste. I prefer it straight from the mokapot with no sugar or milk added.
This is a staple in most Hispanic families in Miami 😂 my mom does this every single day at her job. When you go over to a party in a Cuban household and the end of the night you always get un cafesito ❤️🙌🏽

This is *so* cool! And your Mom is adorable! I have a friend from Puerto Rico and she has a similar method for the best coffee in the world. She uses Café Bustélo Espresso Coffee boiled on the stove in a regular pot and strained through a Colador aka a "sock" (Coffee Strainer). She pours the coffee through the sock into a cup. She heats some Evaporated Milk on the stove top separately (this matches your Mom's sugar step). The milk is heated just to the boiling point and then added to the espresso in the cup. Add sugar to taste if you prefer (I usually skip the sugar because the milk is sweet enough for me). And voila! It reminds me of my childhood when my Mom would make coffee and her friends would pop over for coffee and "gossip", lol. We have lost so much of the communal joy of having coffee with family and friends, having traded the warmth of a familiar kitchen for a coffee shop with strangers. Thank you so much for this video. It really brought back great memories! Keep up the great work and please - More videos with your Mom
I moved to New Jersey a couple months ago after living my whole life in Miami. Watching this video made me miss Miami so much. I believe that this is one of the best videos on Cuban coffee many are way to long this was short and to the point. Being that I have been raised in a Cuban family now living in Hunter's creek FL it's cool to see that many enjoy this beverage with others. An FYI if I may the "silver thing" as you said is called a Moka pot made by a guy named Bialetti in Italy. The Moka pot is used a lot over there , but once the Latin community got a hold of it and discovered the brewing perks it stuck like white on rice. So yeah that's it long story short love the video

Made this today using the moka pot and it was delicious! Tip: I used one wisk of an electric blender to whip the sugar. It's easier on your arm and quick!

fun facts from a barista: these are both espresso makers. the first is stove top maker, second is standard espresso machine. and on the espresso machine, that "silver thing" is called a portafilter, and has a "basket" inside. you want the espresso ground and tamped so that it comes out at the right speed- 14 grams of espresso should take 23-26 seconds. too long or short and it gets sour or bitter, so practice for best flavor. can't wait to make this, thank you!

I found the first coffee maker and the coffee on Target's website :) The coffee maker is called Primula Stove top Espresso Maker for 14.99. the coffee is like 2.49. I can't wait to try it.
Im Dominican and we use this type of coffee maker lol we call it a Greca- it's supposedly a style of brewing coffee that Greeks initiated-- per my biased Dominican Family lol! But we don't make the whole foam with sugar part. This video is awesome! Thank u!

I’ve been making Cuban coffee for roughly 15 years now & it’s definitely a practice makes perfect craft-this is by far the best and most authentic Cuban coffee tutorial video on UA-cam, hands down.
All that hard work of brewing a cup of coffee is well worth it. Most people when visiting Cuba go for the cigars or rum, I went for the coffee. And brought all the coffee I was able to bring. I wish I had more Serrano coffee now. I miss Cuba

In PR we never do that "whipping" thing in the first method to create a foam, we just add sugar after or some don't add anything. Now I gotta try this cause it looks so delicious😍

Im Dominican and we use this type of coffee maker lol we call it a Greca- it's supposedly a style of brewing coffee that Greeks initiated-- per my biased Dominican Family lol! But we don't make the whole foam with sugar part. This video is awesome! Thank u!

All that hard work of brewing a cup of coffee is well worth it. Most people when visiting Cuba go for the cigars or rum, I went for the coffee. And brought all the coffee I was able to bring. I wish I had more Serrano coffee now. I miss Cuba

In PR we never do that "whipping" thing in the first method to create a foam, we just add sugar after or some don't add anything. Now I gotta try this cause it looks so delicious😍
