How to make CUBAN COFFEE using a Moka pot (no machine required)

- If you've ever been to Miami, you know about Cuban's liquid gold, espumita, which is what makes our Cuban Coffee so darn good!
In this episode, Ernie shares the way to make the perfect Cuban coffee, aka cafecito, at home using a Moka pot (no additional equipment required).
The beauty of cafecito is that you only need one ounce to get that mega caffeine kick! If you want to share with friends, you order or make a colada, which serves 6-10 people. Using a Moka pot, you automatically make a colada and then can use the left over coffee later for drinks like cafe con leche and/or cortadito. Ernie shares how to make those too.
Cortadito is equal parts milk to espresso. This drink works well with any milk alternative, but is typically served using whole milk, and for an extra special treat, we like to add or substitute evaporated milk. Remember, what makes it Cuban is making espumita for your espresso before adding it to your milk.
Cafe con leche is much like a latte. Only, Cuban coffee with espumita is made using sugar, so you have an extra kick of sweetness. Just like the cortadito, any milk substitute can work, but it is best served with whole milk or diluted evaporated milk for the most authentic experience. There is a SECRET ingredient that helps make THE BEST cafe con leche, see if you catch it, only pros know to add it when served at a cafeteria.
Ernie shows you exactly how to use a Moka pot to make any coffee. This stove top coffee maker is an essential in any coffee lover's kitchen.
What makes Cuban coffee Cuban is using the traditional product AND espumita (Cuban liquid gold). Otherwise, using a Moka pot with any variety of coffee leads to a multitude of coffee experiences. Let us know if you would to learn about more coffee recipes using a Moka pot.

This guy makes me smile and laugh. He is a great presenter of Cuban coffee con leche!!! Drives the info home gently but accurately and with a touch of humor!
Glad to hear it! Just posted a new video today
I watched this like 50 times just because the chemistry story telling about grandma , video from wife, and your humor. Thanks alot I appreciate the tutorial I mastered it lol
Heck yes! It’s been less than 24hrs since my trip to Miami and I am already missing their cafe con leches! So I bought myself a mini moka pot, and this is just perfect! Thank you. ❤
Prefect afternoon pick me up. Let us know how it goes.
OMGGGGG!!! I LOVE this video, thank you for doing this!!! I am from Miami and this reminds me of one of my best friends, John teaching me how to make cuban coffee with such detail 40+ years ago!! LOVE IT!!
Oh, yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How marvelous!!!!!! I cannot start my mornings or nights for that matter without my coffee!!!!!!! Thank you, I'm soooo happy!!!!!!!!💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Just got back from a vacation in Key West where I became addicted to Cuban coffee. Just bought a moka pot. Truly enjoyed your video. About to make my 1st cup THANK YOU
I always want coffee
Agreed!
I love it. Thank you for explaining the differences between the Cuban coffee options, all of which are delicious and pretty much a daily part of most Miami natives lives even if they’re not Cuban. Now I’m off to make some. Yum.
Yay! Que rico.
Thank you for showing me how to make Cuban coffee 🙏
All of my family from PR that lived in Hialeah for my entire childhood all passed before I got a chance to actually learn how to make the coffee I grew up drinking. Thanks for filling in the gaps!
Awe! It's our pleasure and purpose. Happy to give you the how-to. 🥰
Was in Key West this past weekend and ordered a colada...and I drank the entire thing alone.
It was sooooo good, but I thought my heart was going to beat out of my chest!
The best thing during the heat of the day was a large cafe con leche over ice!
Cafecon leche over ice is definitely under used. In fact, going to make one tmrw. 🙌😁
I tried my first cafecita while I lived in Miami. I lived on the stuff! ❤❤❤ since I moved I’ve been missing it bad! Thank you so much for this video. I just finished ordering my pot. I can’t wait to make some ☕️☕️☕️
Yay! So glad to give you a taste of home.
Your granny used the first drops cause they are the strongest part
Exactly
Bingo…..the first drips that come out are the strongest. They just went through those fresh coffee grounds. The last part that comes out is weaker because the first water extracted a lot from the grounds.
Weekdays I drink coffeemaker drip coffee....usually dark roast w medium grind...
On the weekend I make a BIG cortadito! I have a 4cup Bialetti...I make the whole pot...do the whipped sugar mix (abt 3tsp)...and do a 1:1 with boiled milk (actually half&half when I have it)....it's the absolute best coffee this Puerto Rican makes at home.
However, I have fond memories of my Abuelita's cafe con leche....using a colador. ❤️❤️❤️
It's those food memories that make it all taste that much better. 🤗💕
actually italians do espumita (we call it spuma) as well, but it’s more like a special occasion thing if that makes sense. my mom would do it once in a while. she wouldn’t pack the coffee as italians don’t do that (no shade here- i love cafecito and understand the difference 😊), but made spuma to sweeten her coffee rather than just adding sugar to the finished cup. thank you for the video! very informative.
edit to add- my mom also did it with the first few drops of coffee ❤
Love it. Going to look deeper into the history and see about correlations. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Came here for a quick tutorial on Cuban coffee, soaked up some wisdom and enjoyed the familial aspect behind the video and the humour! Cheers!
Gracias! We love to connect with our Cuban coffee lovers.
The interaction with your wife behind the camera is very cute
We definitely have fun.
As a newcomer to cafe Cubano, this was very informative. Gracias.
You're very welcome! Look out for more content coming soon.
Thanks for the knowledge!
Always happy to share. Hoping to make more recipes soon.
Lmao y’all are hilarious. This is the first video I’ve seen from you and loved the roll your wife played. Hilarious. Thanks for the video God bless.
Ha! Happy to serve up some joy.
That looks and sounds wonderful! The closest I've had is Turkish coffee, which I love. I usually use a press to make my daily coffee, though, for ease and convenience.
Just packed it right and put it straight on the burner with cafe bustelo was amazed at how there was little to no bitterness straight out of the moka pot. 🎉. Excited to try all the combinations. ✌️
Yay! So excited for you. Cheers!
Thank you for sharing! 😊
We appreciate you too!
Thank you for this amazing breakdown. Going to try this morning!!
Yay!! Going to make vaca frita next.
I had been in Miami twice, in 1990 and 1998 . I remember the good taste of ( La colada) it was amazing 🌺
Try it at home and let us know how it goes.
I will be trying that today!!! Thank you for sharing! ❤☕
Yay!! Try our batido de mamey next!
Love it! Nothing like a great cafecito 🔥
Always! Thank you!
Aaaah!!! I was finally able to get the foam right thanks to you!!!
That's what we love to hear! 🫶
I’ve missed my Cuban coffee so much since moving from Miami to Seattle that my friend sent me 12 bags of Cafe Bustelo. So happy to find your video so I can recreate that deliciousness ❤
Aldi's has yellow bricks of Café Bustelo
I haven’t tried to make Cuban coffee just yet but I’ve been wanting to since a colleague who was from Miami made it for me. I recently bought a moka pot and have only been doing espresso or coffee with it but I’ve watched a couple of videos on making Cuban coffee (your video is by far the best) but I just wanted to say that the instructions that came with my moka pot said to fill it with coffee but definitely NOT tamp it. If I hadn’t read the instructions I would have tamped as I’m used to making espresso in a typical modest home espresso machine. Other than that, your instructions are great, thank you!
You do have to tamp it down a bit - definitely not like espresso, but lightly packed, it will make a great cup. You'll have to experiment a little to find what works best for you.
Came accross this video at random... loved it so much I'm making Cafecito's and Cafe con leche's on my Saturday Mornings. Perfecto!
I flipping LOVE THIS
And we love you!
Fantastic fun!!!!
This was so helpful!
Yay!! Happy to hear it.
Thank you for this, best explanation I've seen yet.
Yay! That's an amazing compliment!
Great video!!!
THAT was beautiful!!! Drank authentic Turkish coffee, drank Puerto Rico coffee, even went to a "coffee house" to have Cuban coffee. Watching you, I now do not believe that I had authentic Cuban coffee. Only disagreement I have, I cannot SMELL
Ha!!! Come to Miami, it's the scent that lingers in our air along with the ocean breeze.
Awesome video guys! Personal, instructional, and funny. 👍🏼😁
Thank you! We try. Glad you enjoyed it.
After watching this video like 5 times already, I'm excited to start making cuban coffee at weekend festivals. I really believe that I got it down now and even know how to say each coffee just like the cuban people would say them. I just want to say a big THANKS for your video.
Yay!!! So great to hear. Let us know where you are and maybe we can plan a visit.
I'm going to make myself one now.
I love to pour leftover colada on a scoop of vanilla ice cream. 😉
WONDERFUL IDEA!!!!!
Wow nice. Will try ❤
Let us know how it goes.
I loved this video! First I was looking to learn to make Cuban coffee with my new moka pot and you gave great direction. Then I really loved the dynamic of you and your wife. Great contest and my coffee turned out amazing. Bless.
So happy to hear it!! Have you tried any of our other recipes? We make great quick sandwiches.
Cafecito! That small of a shot! Gabriel Iglesias was not kidding of how strong it's.
We love that bit that he does! Spot on!
Excellent video on Cuban coffees. And, excellent camera woman. You guys are great...!
Yay!! Thank you so much! Best compliment!
Great video! Easy instructions and amazing results. The cafecito and the cortadito were delicious! I’m going to experiment with different amounts of sugar as it was very sweet.
So glad you enjoyed! What is your favorite way to drink your cafe?
My great grandmother lived to 102. I swear it’s a Cuban thing 🇨🇺
OMG TY! my friend's abuela used to make this but not tell me the evaporated milk and salt part
I remember I had a job in Miami and stopped at a gas station and decided to try the coffee... didn't know if I was more in love with the coffee or the woman making it oof
Ha! Love that. Those ventanita ladies are real charmers.
I just bought a moka pot, I've been just drinking it black. I started remembering my trip to Miami years ago, and how much I loved the Cuban coffee. I'm making this tomorrow. Thanks for sharing.
So glad to hear! Let us know how much you love it!
Looks muy Sabrina. I’m going to try home.
Awesome video!!!
Thank you!
Loved your video. Great presentation, informative and your enthusiasm was contagious. 😂
Thank you so much watching you make coffee reminded me of growing up in homestead watch my beloved great grandmother make coffee
Hoping to keep their traditions and stories alive with these little videos.
Your personality is spectacular. Thank you for being you.
Awe!!! Thank you! We love our culture and our food.
I love all of these coffees. Lo más fuerte - mejor!!
Thank you.
Me está haciendo la boca agua!
Que rico es el cafe!
Great video, 😂informative and entertaining!!👏🏼
Thank you! We love informing and entertaining.
Riguisimo yo lo hago así ❤😊❤
This is strong, sweet coffee. Keep that in mind Miami drivers. 🤫
😂100%
I'm ready!
Give it a go!
Thanks. It’s a beautiful way of adding sugar to your coffee. I’ll definitely try it.
🙌
This video was *delightful*.
Yay! Thank you for your comment.
Almost like a Italian espresso. The sugar syrup looks good. I'll have to make it like that. Bravo
Let us know how it goes!
@@miamifoodfamily4270 tried to whip it! Came out a lovely syrup crema. Nice and sweet. Delish
Me gustó su video. Saludos desde España
Hola! Gracias! 🤗
This was great!👍👍 Thanks for breaking down each step & for making me realize how little coffee café con leches contains!😳I'm off to go make the 1 w/more more coffee now!
Our pleasure. ☺
😂❤🎉You Are Amazing Thank You For Beautiful Demonstration
Thank you for sharing your love.
Cortadito... my fav
Mine too!
I'd like to try this. The best coffee I ever had was Greek coffee at a restaurant. The waiter cautioned me not to drink the wet grounds at the bottom of the cup 😊
While the Cafe con Leche doesn't appeal to me at all, the Cortadito looks amazing, I'm definitely keen to try that one out
Agreed. I used to drink cafe con leche as a child but now it's just way too much milk. The one to one ratio gives you the warm, creaminess without being too much.
At 7:21 , Lactoderm = milk skin, it's exactly what I was thinking when he was struggling to find a name for it. Kind of like pudding skin, that thick dried out layer you get when pudding has a chance to "dry out" in the fridge. Yep, I agree , milk skin is gross! I really enjoyed the video, I am going to try out these recipes, thanks.
Yay! Thanks! Let us know which recipes you've tried. As for the lactoderm, we are a house divided. 😂
@@miamifoodfamily4270 But why does your wife like the lactoderm? Does it add anything to the coffee? Whenever I get that skin on my milk, I feel like I burned the milk.
I wish it wasn’t 11pm!! So excited to make some in the morning 😅
Ha! How did it go?
Did anyone else catch the line from Daft Punk??
👍👍
Looks great, going to try some of these out. I haven’t had a decent cafe con leche in over a decade. Not since a few trips to Enriquitas.
Oh wowza! Dale! Get to it.
I have had authentic Turkish coffee, had Puerto Rican coffee, even went to a coffee house to have Cuban coffee. Watching you, I do not believe that I have had authentic Cuban coffee. Looks delicious. Only disagreement is that I cannot SMELL that wonderful brew.
Ha! One day maybe we'll have tech that will enable all the senses to experience the amazingness that is Cuban coffee.
I just got a moka pot and I’m so happy you made this simple!!! 🙂 I’ve been away from Florida for 4 years and I miss my cafe con leche 😭 I can’t wait to make some! Pero papa what coffee/expresso do I use? That’s the only thing I’m missing 😞 thank you 🙏 😊
Ah! Good point. We vary, but the go to is Cafe La Llave.
Ahora si
Cafecito perfecto.
So enjoyed this video, the great information/instruction and your presentation, especially. Until now, these distinctions in coffee servings had escaped me. In my well-loved Bialetti Moka pot, there is a tiny, nondescript waterline marked just below the valve in the lower chamber. I find that helpful, as well, but your suggestion of using the valve as a marker works--it's a lot easier to see. :-D Felicidades.
Yay! So glad to make things easier for you to enjoy cafe.
I lived in a place that had one of those stoves and I stopped making coffee in my Moka pots because it was frustrating. I'm glad I'm back to a gas stove. It's the only way.
Thank you so much. What brand of cuban coffee grounds do you use (or think is best)?
We like Cafe La Llave or Mayorga.
So that’s the famed cafecito Gabriel was speaking of…
Thanks! 😊
Which Gabriel?
@@miamifoodfamily4270
Ah sorry, my bad!
Gabriel Iglesias, one of my favourite comedians
Ah, yes! That's the one. Love him too.
Really enjoyed the video, guys! Thanks for explaining the differences. I am going to have try the salt. Do I add it to the finished drink, or does it get added earlier? Thanks.
Sorry for delay in response. Salt goes at the very end.
I drink the whole thing every morning 🙂
Great video! Question: when making the cortadito and cafe con leche, do you start with the sweetened coffee you made in the beginning? As in, do these drinks contain sugar? Thank you!
yes. you pour a cafecito from the colada. the coffee used for cafe con leche and a cortadito comes from the colada also.
Yes. Sorry for delay in response. We are officially back though. Let us know what questions you have. You can try without sugar but the authentic Cuban colada always comes with sugar foamed.
AWESOME VIDEO. I REALLY ENJOYED IT. FUNNY AND ENTERTAINING. I HAVE TO GET ME ONE OF THOSE COFFEE MAKERS!! I AM PLANNING TO GO TO MIAMI AND FIND A PLACE WHERE I CAN TRY THE CUBAN COFFEE! IF BY ANY CHANCE YOU COULD RECOMMEND ME SOME PLACES I'D APPRECIATE IT. I WANT TO TRY ALL THESE YOU PRESENTED. TAKE CARE!
So sorry for such a delayed response. Try to stop at any ventanita for a great cafecito. Our favorite would probably Casavana in Miami Lakes. The busier the place, the better because you know it's fresh. There are even some grocery stores here with cafecito counters (Publix Sabor on West 12th Ave and 68th street is my personal favorite).
i wish i watched this before making my first pot. i poured the whole pot in my mug and drank the whole thing.
I will definitely have to try this. Thank you. Love my coffee
Yay! Thank you for watching! Let us know how it goes.
First bit of cafe is concentrated and helps for the sugar foaming
LOVE LOVE LOVE 🫶🏻 your presentation 🇺🇸☕️🇺🇸
SPECIALLY reference ABUELITA ..GRAND MOM
GOD BLESS ..YOU & YOUR LOVED ONES 🕊
Thank you! Blessings to you and yours.
Love your videos! Where did you get those lovely clear coffee cups?
Chido . hey you can use a tamper to pack it down . ya me gusto la rutina. Saludos from California.
We never use one but should try it.
Coffee❤❤
We couldn't agree more!
Good vid. TY
Weird that you said it's 2 parts coffee and 1 part milk, but then you said it's 1 to 1. I guess the secret is just make it to your preference!
I'm also glad that you packed the grounds so tight. I do that and people get mad.
Amo el café cubano y ahora
Mismo me are un cafécirtadito
Epa!!! Que rico!!
I think in this video this guy was already drinking coffee he is hyper as hell. LOL
Lol! We Cubans are always hyped!
"My grandmother drank it before bed" does grandma have ADHD? 😂
Maybe😂
I love my coffee ☕ before bedtime 🌙
Over tightening will cause the gasket to pinch then leak... just firm is where its at 👌🏽
very true
I had no idea how to make Cafe like that lol my mom never taught me
For real?!? I know she always using the electric one but this way is better IMO.
Over tightening like that only destroys the gasket sooner. Just a moment after you feel resistance from the rubber is all you need. The valve is there to release pressure in an emergency, for instance if your coffee is packed in so tight that the water isn't passing through. The risk of covering the valve and over packing the coffee puck is that the unit may explode.
So glad you didn’t do any of the silly unnecessary steps with the moka pot, like blooming the grounds first or boiling the water first
Cubans do things fast! The quicker you can get to it, the better. 🤣
Joel, as far as I understand, boiling the water first is solely to save money in areas where electricity is cheaper than gas.
although to be honest, james hoffmann did some testing, and using boiling water def helps reduce bitterness and harsh flavors. take that as you will :)
@@raphaelmonserate1557 When you're adding that much sugar does it really matter? haha
