    In this video, I build yet another colored pencil guitar, this time a bass. Between this project and moving into the new workspace, it's taken me a bit longer than usual to upload. Everything should be back on track now that I'm getting settled in. Thanks!

    Wow, pretty cool, back in the seventies I built a clear lucite guitar in my HS STL class (1974,75). I had no router, but did have a drill press, used rotary rasp bit to carve the various pockets. I made a few mistakes, one was that I didn't figure out truss rods correctly and I didn't think to carve out a couple of pockets to lighten the beast. Did a lot of shaping with rasp, neck curves and body reliefs. Mine was clear, took a lot of hand polishing to finish the cut edges. It was tons of fun to do it, I even made my own knurled knobs on the school lathes. I always prefered a one piece neck, inserting the truss from behind with an inlay, and pressing the frets right into my hand sculptured necks, made 2, one from maple with a walnut truss slot inlay the other was walnut with a maple inlay. Your work is certainly more artistic and very good. Often wonder what happened to it, left it home when I went to college and no one seemed to know where it went 😔. Love your work, btw what do you do with these when your done?

    I've never smiled so gleefully watching someone work on a handmade piece before, and I don't really dig reggae that much for more than one or two tunes either.
    Stunning work, at least for a layman who has absolutely no idea how all of this is done in detail. The only thing I would nitpick on, aside from the stripes that you reacted to as well, are the weight-drops you made in the back. Not sure if it's any different for bass-players, but I imagine those carve-outs will make it uncomfortable as it leans inward towards your hips/ribs/stomach.
    Otherwise, absolutely gorgeous job.

    I'm a writer and everyone tells me how they wish they could write well, how it's a gift, an art form, etc., etc., etc. That's great and all, and I love what I do -- but I would trade it all for the fine motor skills to do projects like these. I can't even cut a straight line, much less an outline using a table saw. I'd be lucky to finish with all my fingers still attached to my hand. I see folks making things like this guitar -- which is amazing, by the way -- or furniture, pottery, etc., and I am so envious. Anyway, thanks for sharing this. Really cool video.

      Don’t judge your products too harshly, perfection isn’t the goal, it’s to learn and gain confidence with every project!
      See what you want to do and keep trying and practicing the skill till you feel confident with it,
      Every expert was a novice once, and every expert started with different amounts of “natural talent”
      time, measured deliberate thought and research, and a dedicated practice routine will always surmount natural talent in the end!

      I know it might sound strange but sometimes you think you want something more than you actually do! And the way to gauge how much you actually want it, is to see how hard you've tried. If you haven't tried, it means you don't really want it that much. There are courses you can go on, for one week or two and some extend for several months, that teach you luthiery. Talent is not a requirement. Just need persistence and effort 🤷🏻‍♂️

      @RMR1 4 роки тому +1

      @@willowrakiahcreager123 Thanks, I appreciate that. And I don't mean to downplay it. I appreciate the gift that I have and the fact I can make a living from it. I've just never really thought of it as a skill, per se. I don't have any training in it. I never even went to college. It's just something I started doing one day -- I enjoyed it, people liked it, and for 25 years, I've made a career out of writing stories, op-eds, speeches, advertising copy, etc. I'm grateful, believe me. But sometimes it almost feels like I'm cheating.

    Hey, stupid idea, imagine doing a guitar out of marbles and epoxy!

    • @propyro85
      @propyro85 4 роки тому +30

      That would get really heavy, and very difficult to route and sand. I'm not sure if anyone makes diamond router bits, but that's what you'd need to cut the glass marbles.

    • @Matty517
      @Matty517 4 роки тому +9

      I can see a base coat of wood or something like that routed out to hold marbles, then a big thick top layer of epoxy. Router would never hit the marbles, they’d just be on the inside of everything
