  • Опубліковано 18 сер 2024
  • This long game club comparison will help golfers decide whether they should play a 7-wood, utility, hybrid or iron after their fairway wood. So often, golfers ask 2nd Swing award-winning fitters about the best long game club to play, and if it should be a 7-wood, utility iron, hybrid or iron to transition to the 3-wood. This long game club comparison video is designed to help golfers with that dilemma.
    0:00 Intro
    3:35 Testing (T150 4-iron)
    5:45 Testing (ZU85 Utility)
    8:31 Testing (Paradym Hybrid)
    11:11 Testing (TSR2 7-wood)
    12:38 Data & Conclusions
    In this video, 2nd Swing's Drew Mahowald is joined by master club fitter Kevin Kraft to conduct a Trackman test using a Titleist TSR2 7-wood, Callaway Paradym 4-hybrid, Srixon ZU85 Utility Iron, and a Titleist T150 4-iron. The goal is to help golfers with that common dilemma of deciding between a 7-wood, utility iron, hybrid or iron.

      Agree, I had done away with my 3 and 4 iron for a 21 degree hybrid about 10 years ago. That was a great move for me. I hit really well. Fast forward to today, I’m 52 years old, I have added a 7 wood. This gives me much more stoping power than the hybrid I’ve been gaming. My 4 iron carry’s 200 finishes 225. Hybrid carry’s 205 finishes 220. 7 wood is carrying 210 finishing 220.

    I’ve been gaming a 7 wood for a little over a year. Absolutely versatile and a weapon! Off the tee I can pinch it clean and get it to run out 230-240 every time. Off the fairway when I go for the green, I can easily flight it with stock swing and get it to carry 215 and stop at 220. I can lay off of it and choke down a bit and land it 200-205. It’s such an underrated club.

    I've fiddled around with this part of my bag for years and finally settled on a pretty sweet setup that contains 2 of the clubs you hit here funny enough. Took my 4iron out and went to the Srixon ZU85 3i and I love it for a tee club and off great fairway lies. I hit a consistent nice cut with it and keep it in play well. Then I picked up a TSR2 7 wood after I just got fed up with hybrids. That 7 wood is so versatile for me. I love it off the tee, in the fairway or even out of the rough. The shape of it gets through the rough very well I have found. The setup is unconventional but it's working well for me and isn't that the great part about golf? We all have our own game and need to find the clubs to make it all work.

    I found a Callaway Epic Speed 3w and 7w combo at 2nd Swing in Dallas while on a business trip. They followed me home from the trip and they have the Ventus Red 8tx and 9tx in them. The 3wood is really good but the 7 wood is something else. I'm a +4, was a 2 iron user for 20+ years, but don't have the game for a real 2 iron anymore. I have also NEVER gotten along with any hybrid or utility iron long term except for my Gen 6 PXG but it tendes to be to low spin at times. I can do anything I need to with this 7 wood. I had been toying with the idea of a 7 wood for a few years but never pulled the trigger as I never could find one to demo with a shaft in the weight and profile range I like. One lucky business trip to Dallas and I'm a 7 wood convert for life.

    My 4 iron club speed is 102 average. When the wind is calm ping g425 7 wood is my preferred choice. Super forgiving and carrying 220 is hard to beat. If the wind is over 12mph then I fall back on a utility iron because it’s a little more resistant to the wind. I just check the weather before leaving the house.

    I had a 7 wood in the bag for a very long time when I just started 3 years ago. It‘s so easy to hit and get it in the air. But a year ago fell in love with an old macgregor 3 from my fathers bag, which is now my savest club. I can keep it low and let it run if it‘s windy or send it 210 of the tee to a tight fairway.

    Dispersion is the most important if you are trying to reach a green at this distance. If that is the case, T150 is the clear winner here. I would have preferred to see Callaway’s super hybrid in this test but for me the T150 would be my club to go if I had the same results.

    I just ordered an icrossover 3 with Kai'li white. I watched your guys previous vids and just got some time with 4 of the new hybrids, and a couple 7 woods. The hybrids were decent for me but dispersion was all over, the 7 woods were just so high and too much spin for me (made me sad because i loved the look and feel of them), the 3 Ping icrossover hit the exact distance gap I needed at the top of my bag. I went in testing my gapping/distance of my 4,5,6 (t100s) then to my 5w Paradym td. My 4i and 5i were playing near identical from a tee and the 5i was better on average off the deck. but I went from 198-205 in the 4i/5i up to 230(+-5) in my 5w. The Ping was giving me an average of 215 and filled that gap nicely, so I will probably just drop my 4i. Love your videos!

      Go try a Hywood! I hit it barely shorter than my best 5 woods, but like 8-9/10 vs 5-6/10 good shots. The old by-wood is 3+ 18 degrees. New ones are 3+ and 17 degrees and a bigger head, slightly longer, and the 4+ is 20 degrees. I haven’t hit the new ones yet. But I am a low ball hitter, and hit the old Hywood high, maybe even a touch too high and had to move the ball back slightly.

    5 wd-18,5*
    7 wd-22.5*
    9 wd-27*

    The fairway woods are just extremely easy to hit.
    The worst shot with a fairway wood is a lot better than my worst with a long iron, and I don't like hybrids. I have been thinking of getting 13 wood (31 degrees), but no one makes a modern-day quality adjustable 13 wood.

    • @2ndswing
      @2ndswing  6 місяців тому +1

      Good question and thanks for watching! From a loft perspective, most 7-woods are around 21 degrees, and nowadays, most 4-irons are closer to 21 degrees than 3-irons so that's what we based this on. But several years ago, standard 3-iron lofts were much closer to matching 7-woods. 9-woods at 23 degrees can also be a 4-iron replacement for some weaker-lofted iron sets. Ultimately, though, it's about your gapping. You might want both a 4-iron and a 7-wood in the bag if the gapping is appropriate for you.

    • @2ndswing
      @2ndswing  6 місяців тому +2

      Depends a little bit on what iron model your 5-iron is. Options to look into would be a 4-hybrid or 5-hybrid or perhaps a 9-wood. You would just want to ensure your lofts are spaced adequately. So, for example, if your 5-iron is 26 degrees of loft, you wouldn't want to go to a 23-degree 9-wood because that would create uneven gapping between your clubs. But obviously if your 5-iron is closer to 23 degrees, then that is a viable option.
