Every day, William greets 4,000 Oakland commuters- fist bumping, shaking hands, even hugging people from all walks of life. William has worked as a station agent at BART for 20 years and considers it the best job in the world. William’s passion for helping people feel included comes from his own experience transcending personal barriers.

William saved my booty one night. I got on the wrong train, it was also the last train of the night. I ended up at his station asking about bus lines and he went way out of his way to ensure I got home safely after the trains stopped. My phone was dead so he called me an Uber and waited at the curb with me to make sure I was safe outside the station. I will never forget his kindness and generosity of spirit. Most people that do something nice for you are expecting something in return, but the only return William expected was the good feeling he got from being helpful and for doing the right thing. I’ll never forget his kindness as long as I live. No one is more worthy of this honor and short story. Thank you, William! You saved me that night. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
