    I don’t know why this is coming up in my feed 3 years later but I’m glad it is.
    I’m always happy to see a guitar that isn’t shaped like a Les Paul, Tele, a Strat or a pointy Strat.
    I mean, people are still talking about how strange the Jazzmaster is shaped and it’s a 60+ year old design and not really that strange.

    The positions actually go
    1: Bridge

    4: All three
    5: Bridge + Neck

    I'm not the biggest fan of Annie's music, but her playing and her taste in guitars is excellent. That thing looks perfect for fuzzed-out psychedelic music, and you're right, I get some serious Danelectro vibes from it.

      it's a missed opportunity. EBMM cheaped out by putting one of the existing necks from their parts bin rather specifically stylizing one. it looks out of place.

    The ”full fat" EBMM model of that is SO nice. It sustains for days, and the neck feels killer. I am impressed that the pickups on the Sterling version seem to sound very similar to mine. I still think you should treat yourself and "upgrade" to the USA model. I don't think you would regret it.

    I love how in the 60's they were like "This is the guitar of the future" with things like the explorer, the flying v and the offset fenders like the jazzmaster and the jaguar. At the moment they weren't that espectacular but as years went on, people started to love them, and I belive that models like the st vincent have that vibe to it and it's amazing.

    I got to play one of the EBMM versions at a St Vincent meet and greet. There were a few things that caught my attention, in that less than ideal setting. The body feels even smaller than it looks, and the neck is really comfortable to play. I almost bought one when it was first introduced, but other guitars caught my attention and ate whatever budget I thought I had for it.
    I dig the Stealth model, and there was a translucent blue Ball Family Reserve model that I liked . But other than that, I haven't really liked any of the colors offered. The Sterling price point is very tempting, regardless of the color.

    I've had my st. Vincent for 6 mos. Now and I haven't got a single negative thing to say about it!!!..it showed up in the mail fully set up and the intonation was and still is perfectly set 6 mos. Later and it's the most comfortable guitar I've ever played in my 30+ years of playin" !!..the only problem with it is that it's an amazingly crafted guitar so much infact that I've neglected my les paul, my strat, tele as well as many others I am a blues guitarist and this guitar w/ 3 mini humbuckers is perfect for playin blues and practically all other genres. I just can't wrap my head around the fact that annie clark designed it considering she just uses synth and an unorthodox style of guitar playing ...more like spiratic noodling. I don't care at all for st. Vincent's style but Annie sure knows how to design the perfect guitar w/ the most unbelievable tonal abilities!!! The economy model by sterling is just as amazingly flawless !!! If anyone is thinking of buying one stop thinking and vet one Now !!! I've never encountered such perfectly crafted guitars as i have in the music man & sterling brands QC must inspect em" with microscopes I believe GIBSON and FENDER NEED TO TAKE SOME NOTES AND FOLLOW SUIT because lately their qc has been slacking

  • @charleskuehn6005

    Hey, Phillip, are you sure about those pickup positions? The Ernie Ball version uses the following configuration:
    Position 1 is bridge only
    Position 2 is middle only
    Position 3 is neck only
    Position 4 is all 3 pickups
    Position 5 is bridge and neck pickup only.
    I assumed the sterling would follow the same pattern, but perhaps I’m wrong.

    I love this guitar and have been wanting one since they were first announced. The sterling model you demoed is actually the guitar I’m getting for Guitar Day this year. A lot of people pass it by simply because it is a female signature model, and I’ve heard salesmen at Guitar Center call the contouring a “boob cut” for women, which I found infuriating. It’s a badass guitar, period. Versatile, sleek, comfortable. I love it and I’m so glad you made this video.

    I have the expensive version. When I bought it, I had no idea who St. Vincent/Annie Clark was. I got it because of the wild retro look. It reminded me a BUDWEISER bow tie guitar that I'd seen long ago.
    The trem only goes one way, and there is some limitation to fret access. However, I appreciate that and view it as a challenge. These kinds of challenges can inspire new ways to work around certain problems.

    Sterling is hitting some home runs lately.
    I love this guitar. It reminds me of Bo Diddley and Billy Gibbons.
    Superhero has not really been as big a hit as I think a lot of people fake with their guitars, but Sterling seems to have just come out of nowhere lately. • @EJN64
    @EJN64 6 років тому

    There is only one truly significant thing missing from the cheap model (and of course it’s what I really love about the guitar), and that’s the custom switching. The big boy version has a 5-way switch as follows: Positions 1-3 are each pickup by itself, position 4 is all three at once (in parallel), and position 5 is neck and bridge (also probably parallel, since they’re humbuckers).
    That being said, this is a sweet guitar for $600 (or $500).

  • @Diagonals_
    @Diagonals_ Рік тому

    It looks like these were discontinued and the prices for used ones on Reverb and eBay are topping $1k, some way over. Looks like this inexpensive model option is now something of a collectors item.
    This guitar was the first guitar I bought after my multiple sclerosis diagnosis when I thought I'd never be able to play guitar again (as at that time it affected my hands pretty terribly); something about this guitar - specifically the Sterling version - worked for me and my hands as I fought to get back to being able to play (it was literally physical therapy; I could no longer even hold a pick for more than a minute), so for that I have a real soft spot for this guitar and specific model.
    Not sure why this popped up in my feed as it is a years old review but I'm glad it did! Great review!

  • @GunShySunshine
    @GunShySunshine 6 років тому

    Great review, but the switching on this is actually different than something like a strat. (Starting at the rightmost position) Position 1 is the bridge pickup, position 2 is middle, position 3 is neck, position 4 is all 3 pickups in parallel, and position 5 is the neck and bridge together. I have the exact model myself and it took me a bit to figure out.

    Thanks for the review! One thing that may be worth correcting in the video is the pickup wiring reference. I think the Sterling reflects the MM St. Vincent counterpart and it is a bit different than a regular five-way switch. I think you were actually starting with N&B first; your N was the middle position of the switch, and so on. If I am not mistaken, positions 1-3 (starting from the bridge) would be your B, M, and N respectively, then position 4 would be all three run simultaneously, and position 5 would be the already mentioned N&B. Thank you!

    I was tempted by the Sterling, but I LOVE rosewood necks.
    The Music Man version is one of the best guitars out of the box I've ever played. 2nd only to my EJ Strat in comparison. Except zero hum and the bridge actually stays in tune!
    The DiMarzio mini buckers are just a bit richer with more sparkle.
    But the pickups in the Sterling sound pretty good to me as well.
    If I could only afford the Sterling, I'd be very happy with it. It's a cool guitar!

    Nice job Phil. I like the guitar too, and I also think it’s a refreshing new look and sound.

    I really like all your vids. I bought it. Yup STV60 black Sterling St Vincent.
    Great guitar. Most comfortable of any. 3 mini humbuckers so versatile
    No down side..really gives new one tone options from typical offering s
    Thanks very much you helped a lot.

    Plus you were spot on when u mentioned the comp..between the Ernie ball a nd this axe..saw a review and they pretty much said for lack of a paduk neck ...this one wins..pups can be upgraded easily

    Nice Phil. I would add that Annie took the female anatomy into consideration in the body design. Something that you don't need to worry about!

    Great review back then and still today. Now I have had my St Vincent black Stv60 for a year..The mini humbuckers are incredible getting super delicate to tough SG style sounds. Thank you again for your reviews love this guitar. Yes I have vintage big names too and it fits in.

    Not a massive Anne Clark fan but I have much respect for her artistry and talent...AND I love this guitar. Soo cool to go and do it different. I want that rosewood neck! The only issue is like all sig guitars...You look kinda like a worshiper or a wanna be like... That said I have a purple Hendrix MIM that's groovy as hell so obviously I don't judge. Great vid.

    Looks like a 1960's concept of what a guitar would evolve to in the year 2000. ;-)

    I've always wanted one of these guitars ever since I first saw it. Since then I have listened to St. Vincent and I absolutely love them. For sub $700 I might have to save up and get myself one of these amazing guitars.

    Phil, you really need to edit the pick-up position descriptions, cos ya got it all wrong. I just got mine today and it's as cool as I hoped. It looks like a guitar to play clean on, but it loves distortion, fuzz and all sorts of ridiculous noise stuff.
    Correct pick-up positions are 1 Bridge, 2 .Middle, 3 Neck, 4 All 3 pups, 5 Neck and Bridge

    I've been on the fence with this one. I've always dug the offset guitars and this one immediately caught my eye. Knowing that the Sterling version of this one is still pretty dang good, it may have just put me over the edge. I really enjoyed the demo!

    i have the EBMM model, id say the one thing that the Sterling is missing is just the way the 5 way switch is wired.
