India is moving beyond call centers and IT support - but can it work?

  • For years, multinational companies have set up labor-intensive operations in India involving services such as IT support, call centers or mobile app development.
Despite being one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, India's position in the global value chain remained weak.
Global value chains are activities that often involve multiple countries across several regions. Many everyday products, such as cars and smartphones, involve global value chains, from their design and sourcing of raw materials to assembly and distribution.
Today, nearly 70% of international trade involves global value chains. However, India's position in the global value chain is shifting due to government incentives and a digitally savvy economy.
Adit Jain, the founder of IMA India, a market research firm, said: "When we look at global value chains, two and a half decades ago, all of it [in India] was focused on shared services, back-office accounting, grunge work that could be cheaply done because we have a large, skilled, educated population.
"But then, slowly, businesses started realizing that, hang on, we can actually do a lot more; we can set up high-end research and development."
According to a joint survey conducted in 2022 by EY and the Confederation of Indian Industry, more than 70% of multinational corporations plan to invest in the country in the next 3-5 years.
Rajat Dhawan, a managing partner at global consulting firm McKinsey, said: "By our estimate, many of the Fortune 500 companies have 50% to 60% of their global engineering and [research and development] work, they're getting it done in India."
Tech giants like Amazon and Microsoft have poured billions of dollars into data centers, while other companies like Verizon, Nokia, and Cisco are doubling down on India.
Dave West, Cisco's APAC president, says that the ease of doing business in India has improved over the company's 28-year history in the country.
"We're looking at countries that will help us scale up and deliver services for the market. At some point in calendar year '24, you will see Cisco manufacture in southern India," West said.
"We're going to be manufacturing our best in class, routers and switches."
According to West, Cisco aims to yield a billion dollars out of this investment in the Indian market.
"We're manufacturing in India, not for India, because it will satisfy the domestic market, but it's also satisfying and delivering capabilities and services from India to the rest of the world," West added.
Watch the video to find out more businesses are investing in India.

Second thing is, scam calls can happen across the world. Bangladesh, pakistan, Maldives, whole middle East incl most popular UAE. It's due to some 0.0001% of people. Don't blame entire country and 99.999% of them.

Development in the last 10 years was extreme. We went from cycles to cars and cybercafe to unlimited calls and internet.
It took me 4 hr to cover the same distance (by bus) that I do in 15 mins by road now. Because of improved roads and reduced traffic.
Edit:- I understand that only around 5% people in India earn above 60k per month. And there is still poverty. But overall growth is evident. Internet plays a very big part in development. It's easy for people to gain knowledge now.
Also, I'm from uttarakhand and it has low poverty and a high car ownership percentage (10%). We have to travel long distances so cars and two wheelers become a necessity. We don't see that slum level poverty in uttrakhand. I have been to Delhi and UP and I know those states still have extreme poverty. At least even poor people in uttrakhand have nice homes.
Car starts at a cost of around 3 lakh. If you save money, or take a loan, you can get it.

Four years is not enough time to implement meaningful policies and reforms in a country as large and diverse as India. We need to give each party a fair chance to prove themselves, but also hold them accountable for their performance and promises.

I live in the US - the rest of the media is anti-India - so much religious hate in this world and we are not in the Abrahamic fold
A Muslim gets a bad look in India it is reported as Religious hate and discrimination
Anything bad happening to a minority in India it must be Hindu hate even without knowing who the perpetrators are - and of course everything is blamed on Modi
He got blamed when the incident happened in Gujarat - because he was the Chief Minister there then
Now bad things are happening in Manipur but the Chief Minister is not blamed - they blame Modi
      .
Here in the US you cannot eat dog or cat meat - meat that the Chinese and Koreans eat
In Muslim countries you cannot eat Pig meat
But when India banned the sale of cow meat - the western media threw a fit!
We committed a "crime"! Muslims have nothing to eat! Discrimination!
Article after article was all about how Muslims suffer because of this - no Hindu was allowed to speak
Even though plenty of HIndus were against this law - none were interviewed!
Plenty of Muslims like this law also but again they were not allowed to speak
The western media using this event to push hate and discrimination along religious lines
And these are respected western news media - like NY Times, Washington Post, BBC!
They ALL used it to push hate!

UPI is a payments layer which sits on top of the Aadhar Infrastructure. And UPI is a natural expansion and rebranding of the USSD based payments system launched in 2012 by NPCI ... In simple terms, it was to allow financial transactions using SMS tech but with security and was limited to pilot carries and bank accounts ... UPI was when the experiment was successful and expanded to all accounts and carries and that happended in 2016 after running the pilots for 4 years ... So if UPI is a success, credit should go to Mr. Manmohan Singh and the Aadhar team.

Along with PLI schemes, the Indian government should fund a competitive scheme to improve education in the country. Services may bring USD & may create job for that individual specific but manufacturing sector brings jobs to all & helps country lift from poverty & boosts economy. Right from patents to credit institutions, advertisements, law, transportations, manufacturing, IT support, designers, logistics everyone is employed. Its a chain of employment infact. India needs to target 4th Gen industries now. Manufacturing does not mean just low-end manual jobs. There is lot of Hi-Tech & state of the art machinery involved & also requires set of skills like any other job.Earilier Governments neglected this. but present government understands the void gaps & trying to corrct it by aatmanirbhar , skill India, mudra schemes. etc. Government is also trying to increase infrastructures for same. The Indian population can take a different route almost at every level. I would suggest India also focus more on high value, low volume goods which bring in better revenue and the margins are high. Such products are needed in almost every industry. There are many MSMEs already in India who produce this category of products in industries like aerospace/aeronautics, surgical instruments, etc. So that means we are indeed capable of such production with the talent that we have despite the beauraucratic hiccups that have plagued our economy forever.

India, as well as the People of South Asia, will greatly benefit from artificial intelligence technology...the key is to build a new model of economic growth that is sustainable, as well as incorporates a universal basic income, as the those who are currently leading the technological wave will have an extreme amount of wealth compared to those who do not have the opportunity to participate in this new industrial revolution economy...and this creates an environment that eventual leads to civil revolution...
Taking care of all, when you've made it, is the best way to nurture the next group of leaders...and it's common-sense governance, as it's better to take care of others, or they end up burning it down...both history / recent events have proven this time and time again...

During Childhood, There was a temple that I used to go to and it would take 5-6 hrs because the roads were 2 laned and sometimes in poor conditions.
Now since the roads are of high quality and mostly 4-6 lanes
That same travel (Which I rarely do nowadays) just takes 2 hrs (Even though roads are clear, I don't think driving faster than 80-90 is safe)

Let's not forget TCS and Infosys' (Indian service based tech companies) contribution in fixing the Y2K bug 1990-2000
Context: Y2k is a computer programming flaw that could've caused widespread issues when the year changed from 1999 to 2000.
How? because only 2 digits were used to represent the years back then. ie; 1999 as 99 and 2000 as 00 which the computer would interpret as 1900.
This could've caused failure in power grids, banking systems, transportation networks and lose in economic stability.

And yes, this is understandable from an American pov who think so because the only Indians they have ever talked to in India are call center employees. I just wamna say to Americans that there's always a world outside of America. We have done great strides in software and other sectors throughout the decades. a part which i disagree is lack of skill development. Mfg theme will only humans work as back office with any reasoning capabilities built to leverage the educational population strength. We equally need to focus on the services sector to add more value through innovations, design and new technologies to emerge within country. A skilled individual has high potential to draw business to india proportionally employing more workforce to carry such activities than a fixed set of workers in mfg theme. Mfg is more of a commodity where as services is more of innovations of skilled work. We need both and not ignore emphasis on skill development. We just dont need just robots who work in factories but also manpower who bring value to rest of the world.

India needs transparency on governance , better political and judicial support for multi nationals etc to lure them here. China gave Tesla free land and Ownership of land because of their technology. India is having that old soviet mindset which needs to be updated based on changing times. Less Issues on Cast creed or religion and more issues on growth and development.
