I have the Infinity, for a naturally aspirated V6, she flies, great engine. Yes a little heavy on oil usage but not near enough to put me off. Well done Nissan!! 👏👏👏
Currently have a 300hp VQ35DE in my 16 Maxima. Also had it one an 03 model. Great powerful engines. Not the best on gas but never lacking power and always smooth acceleration.
Got one in my 2006 Murano lol 257,000km on it (Canadian) Ive just done Regular oil changes every 5,000 km with a new filter. New anti freeze every 100,000km (twice so far). Still runs amazing 👏
I have a 2004 350Z with the de. It has 100 1000 miles I just bought it. I have not driven it yet per se but I have been working on it it had 4 oil leaks both rear valve cover spark plug cylinders were holding oil camshaft position sensor as well as oil cooler o-ring. My biggest expense was replacing the valve covers which cost $50 for both on eBay and now there's no oil leaks and it runs fantastic I feel I will got my money's worth. It's the touring Edition hardtop and I paid $6,800. Even after fixing all the oil leaks I still got my money's worth. it's all stock no mods and I look forward to enjoying it for a long time
Pretty common for valves to fail on the z they use alot of torque and have high pressure from all that natural aspiration I would change or check them every year for leaks ans every 3-5 years for optimal performance as well as regular tube ups like oil change , spark plugs , gaskets , crankshaft & camshaft sensors as well most common parts to fail aside from belts and tire wear it’s a solid block of maintained right
Great video. Love my DE! Should be noted, flaws of the DE (not mentioned) bearing failure when boosted and/or driven aggressively, and PITA to bleed air out of the coolant system.
I just bought a 22' Nissan Maxima SV back in July. I love the VQ35DE in it. Producing 300 hp & 261 torque. That car will move! Love it with the cvt. Car is awesome 👌 👏 👍
My 07 M35 has been such a damn good car. It’s at 125k miles and still feels tight as a drum. I replaced the radiator at about 110k miles and the washer fluid pump around the same time and that’s basically it. From the way it starts, sounds, idles and drives, it honestly feels like a new car. It doesn’t burn any oil. I check it every couple of weeks. Of course most modern cars can last a very long time if properly maintained and the same is true for these VQ engines. If you take good care of them, there’s really nothing stopping them from going 200k, even 300k miles. Many of them bite the dust before that point because they’re owned by people who have no interest in maintaining their cars and simply don’t care enough to keep up with it. They’re just gonna drive it until it has problems and then sell it. Avoid those cars at all costs.
Good vid I have 2005 DE with Cai shorty headers and coil overs ,one it gets in the rpm of 4800 and you step on it wow she comes to life ,and handling is hands down the best I've ever had I do have 19 teens on her with 275 on back
I have 2001 pathy le with of course the vq35de. Some mods include hot plugs, cat back magnaflow, cold intake...kn...all new ignition coils, intake boot and plenum spacer ...custom made...and am considering a 75mm Tbody for few extra ponies. Vehicle has 200000 miles and I am from Canada....which has also then required a complete rust removal via new panels all way round, new everything where rust has affected looks...new oem paint plus new oem mags and new tyo open country 111 tires. Its a sweet ride with new leather frt seats , headliner and visors. Plus plus plus! But...only worth $5000CDN to the average joe....to me its worth over $30000 with all the work recently completed. Anyway....love your blog! Very informative....all the best....Jeff
I just bought a 2005 Nissan Maxima Ti the V6 3.5 Ltr engine is an absolute jem. It’s smooth and is happy to just lop along in top gear, however when you put the boot in, it just hammers !
I own one since december 2013. I love every moment by her sides and behind the steering wheel. The sound I love the most? That little echo at 1700 rpm when you deselerate (come from metal piece in the headers)
This is gonna sound silly but I looked up this engine and found this video. I looked up this video because I have a 2004 pathfinder platinum edition and I am surprised at how fast that SUV can take off. It pulls nicely on the freeway too! Considering its an SUV.
A lot of the power difference in that engine had to do with ECU mapping which at the time was fairly new and kind of complicated. Couples with different intake and exhausts. A lot of us back at that time were taking the lower plenums and having them machined to gain more power you would also gain an enormous amount of power by changing the headers due to the fact that they were so restricted from factory at least in the U.S. market
Plenum space # 1 mod not mentioned here. Front 2 cylinders starve so a 5/16" spacer improves power low end torque and better fuel economy.. I fitted 1 and it works
I'm on my 3trd Z now! I sold one of them afew months back, so dwn to 2! There both DEs 03 6spd enthusiast an a 06 touring Auto ! Even Auto it's hella fast! Got a test Rev-Up tune date 📅 NXT month, can't wait! 💪🚗💨💨😎
I have a 2004 350Z and a 2014 Infiniti Q60S. In a comparison, the old 350Z has a LOT more bottom end torque then the Infiniti's 3.7L engine. From 600 - 3500 rpm, the old 350 has a lot more pull when accelerating where as the Infiniti starts to shine above 4000 RPM. Both cars have six speed manual transmissions. What is funny is that the 0-60 and top speed specs for the 2004 350Z and the 2014 Infiniti Q60S with a six speed are exactly the same. I found that funny and interesting. Also, the gearing is identical in both cars. By this I mean, they run at the same RPM relative to the same speed down the road. As for my 350, I have no issue with oil consumption. Yes, there is that start up rattle and at 100K miles I had my water pump and my timing chains and tentioner replaced.
One thing. I replace the oil in both my Infiniti and my 350Z every 3K miles with Mobil 1. Both the 3.5L and the 3.7L engines are very VERY unforgiving with respect to dirty oil and this is the number one reason for oil consumption. What happens is if you let the oil in for, like 5K miles or more, the engine will build up varnish and sludge which blocks the return passages in the heads causing oil to stay on top of the cylinder head and where the PCV valve system can suck it up. This is what causes most of the oil consumption in these engines. This can occur in as little as 20K miles if you don't change the oil enough and or use cheap or wrong oil. This issue also affects the newer 3.5L and the 3.7L Nissan V6's.
Korean cars keep getting better but as far as I know, generally speaking, Japanese engineering and build quality is still No. 1. What is it about Nissan and timing chain tensioners though? They have been a weak point for them in all their high performance motors for about thirty years now! Wtf??
Dave L if you are going to spend 15 grand building a VQ motor you might as well do an LS or 2JZ swap. Thats what Im leaning toward doing, why build a motor that can only at best hold 450 hp, when you can build a motor that has unlimited horsepower gain potential like the others mentioned. 2j is still efficient and reliable at 1000 hp, unless you are a crazy nut if you've ever been in a 500 horse anything, that is scary enough let alone a 1000 hp ass rocket😁. My 350z's almost 300 hp is good enough for me right now. Things can get pretty crazy in a 350Z quick if you dont know what you are doing or under estimate its abilities.
Chain tensioners fail on other cars like Fords etc. I think it has to do with the design and how much load ends up on the tensioners. They will wear over time, develop slop / rattle and eventually break etc. The chain should pretty much last the life of the regular car. The saving grace is tensioners usually give you indications they are on their way out and are going to fail first.
When I really step into my Altima the flexible exhaust coupling leaks enough to improve the sound and I can see the effect on the tach. Probably could use a new motor mount but right now it offers a YeeHa! moment at the tip of my toe.
JEGS and summit have plenty of sources to get cheaper reliable parts for the 3.5. I beefed up my moms maxima and they hooked me up with connects. They never failed me on my f body so I knew they wouldn’t steer me wrong then
Just got a 2012 Nissan Altima 3.5 SR with the VQ35DE and the engine is amazing only thing that sucks is the cvt transmission but since it has 270 hp it has decent acceleration but I’m thinking of selling this to get vq37de . Is the VQ37DE a better engine then the VQ35DE ?
Sad really. Almost every major auto companies are going either turbo or direct injection engine unless it's a bigger motor. No more regular NA engines I'm guessing nowadays. 😁
Engine longevity doesn't interest them. They want more power out of a smaller powerplant for driveability, and can sometimes offer more fuel savings. The mass-consumer market pushes it, and they can save on engine production cost now that turbos are ubiquitous and relatively cheap components, rather than exotic things they were in the past. A lot of transmissions going CVT also, or automatic, and manuals are becoming very rare.
A failed tensioner is unlikely to ever break a timing chain, as they are made of softer materials than steel, which the chain is made from, but they can break / snap off, and make an incredible racket and obviously detrimentally affect timing. They are a fairly simple fix, but labour intensive to get at. I know this because I had one fail in a Ford straight 6 engine (I-6 motor) once. Super-annoying problem if it happens though.
Thanks for the detailed education about my new car. I picked a 2003 350z up and it was babied. Only 26k original miles and I love it. I knowledge on all cars is limited, but now I’m getting into this car and I’m probably going to put a vortec supercharger complete kit on it. The car already has a cold air intake aftermarket rims adjustable suspension etc. I’m wondering what other modifications you would recommend I’m thinking about some aftermarket headers and exhaust and also the Plenum spacer throttlebody and I’m not sure about a bigger cam or not. I don’t want it to be a headache for me and I understand more horsepower more headaches but it seems like this system with this motor is pretty reliable. It could be my every day, but not really because I have a roofing company with trucks I drive trucks all the time so this is my little gold card/missile I think and I’m getting educated through videos from guys like yourself and I appreciate that thank you very much
Definitely a plenum spacer I have the 5/16th Blox spacer. While you're installing it I recommend giving everything a good cleaning. Change the plugs and coil packs while everything is apart. You could also do a throttle body coolant bypass. I got the spacer for $87 on ebay, 6 brand new coil packs $46, 6 NGK Laser Platinums spark plugs $22 all on ebay. Those plugs are normally 8 a pop. I also installed new valve covers so that's why I did everything. I painted the plenum too. Doing all of that really brought the engine back to life. It hauls ass and screams now. The plenum is never hot, no matter how hard I drive it. I also have a cold air intake, I relocated my k&n come air filter in the driver's side bumper insert. It did take about 500-800 miles for the ecu to sort everything out. So if this happens don't be alarmed. I kept getting codes for running too lean. I did the idle relearn, throttle body relearn and ecu reset after every code. Then it just went away and it's been driving just fine. Oh yeah I installed an oil catch can for both bank 1 and bank 2 it's a baffled closed system that returns back to the lower plenum. This has cut back on oil consumption. It catches all kinds of nasty crap that normally gets sent back through the intake to be burned off. I have 207k miles by the way and it's driving so strong. So yours is a rare gem, they'll last forever as long as you maintain them.
Most people talk about not wasting money on bolt ons and just doing boost. The funny thing is most of the bolt ons make the car better boosted. Unless your talking about the serious NA builds.
How does it compare to hondas ivtec v6 in the pulot? It moves the pilot to 60 in only 6. 5 seconds! Imagine that in a smaller, lighter production car. It would match the vq.
Major question my O2 3.5 SE Altima didn't have an auto tensioner pulley. I get new belts and after a couple of weeks would take him back to get tightened again. Drove me crazy that they didn't put a pulley tensioner in there. My question is does the 2017 Maxima have a pulley tensioner??
They made two models in 2005 I have one it's the De they also made the rev up which have more hp but less torque it's the anniversary model but burn more oil
I have a 2006 Nissan Maxima with the 3.5 in it and I think I have the last year of the automatic transmission that is not the CVT and I was wondering which company would be one of the best to go through to buy engine upgrade Parts I want to try to get about 350 to 375 horsepower out of it do they sell engine kits I don't know where to look thank you for your help
Just picked up an 03 r50 with the same motor. Having a hard time finding performance parts for it so wouldn't parts meant for an 03 350z fit the pathfinder motor? Haven't been able to find any info about it, can anyone point me in the right direction?
The VQ35DE was a Replacement for the VQ30DE not the VG the VQ series replaced the VG but not the 3.5 the 3.0 was the first VQ series Engine here in America. FYI Also find the VQ30DETT on wiki. They actually took out the VQ35DE 3.5 for the VQ30DE and made it twin turbo for their race series vehicles in JGTC and what not until they replaced it with their V8 VK48DE! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_VQ_engine
Picked up a running pathfinder with the VQ for crazy cheap and as the trans starts to slip im thinking about putting the vq35de in my miata. Anyone here done a "refresh" on one? Is it worth it seeing as i already have the motor it should be cheaper to tune and build than buying a k series or something
Hey man; i'm a po boy looking to buy a 2001 pathfinder 2wd xe. From what i can tell, it does have this vq35de engine, correct? Is it a non-interference? Does it use a timing chain or belt? The suv has only 140,000 miles on it for $2000. Not planning on modding or racing it. How do you think it will hold up under normal driving? might i get 300,000 miles before it dies? Any insights and recommendations would be awesome; Thanks!
Does the chain tensioner issue vary on where the engine was built? I hear some were made in the states. Where on the car can I find the info that tells me where the engine was built?
The Rev up version of the VQ35DE adds an variable exhaust timing cams. So (visually) there are two circles on each of the camshaft covers, on both the left side and right side of the motor. One solenoid mounted to each of the cam shaft covers. Facing the front of the motor Left side has a green solenoid connector, the right side has a blue connector. the VIN number will tell you also
I own a first year 350 low in production number below the first 3500 in the world and I have loved owning this car every min even after I broke the fucker over and over racing around like Bo and Luke Duke. Hahahhaa
ok . one thing you didn,t say . its also in a skyline. =gt350 skyline. but usa call em infinti g35 . also . the vq35de won awards , for best engine for about five years. in the top five. of engines
VQ35DE gang

I’ve got an 05 35th anniversary addition and I love every minute I’ve had/ will have with it.
333rwhp for you my friend. I have a '10 y51 with the VQ37VHR putting 329 to the ground

@@sleazymeezy I have to drive like a grandma to get above 24mpg.

took me longer to bleed than to replace thermostat and drain coolant haha
I have a m35 with the de. I’m considering adding a swirl pot to make it easier to bleed
It's a great engine series. I'll give it up to Nissan, getting so much power out of a 3.5L engine.
How can people not like the sound of it? Great video!
Totally! Thanks for watching!
VQ35HR!😍

i have a 12 g37x the VHR kicks ass.
The VQ35DE is easily one of the absolute best NA V6 engines ever made.
Love the blooper reel at end lmfao thumbs up from me.
Hating the sound of the vq engine? Who does that, even stock it sounda amazing lol

So what engine does my 2005 g35x have vq35de ? And high rev or no, how do I know what engine I have

6:08 Azusa canyon!
Love the vid. Any chance you could tell me the rims in the thumbnail?
Most people talk about not wasting money on bolt ons and just doing boost. The funny thing is most of the bolt ons make the car better boosted. Unless your talking about the serious NA builds.
So where can i find video footage of that formula car?
Can this motor be tuned for a Murano ( 2010 ) ?
The revup was only in the manual 05 06 and early 07, never in an automatic
Trumpet gang
How does it compare to hondas ivtec v6 in the pulot? It moves the pilot to 60 in only 6. 5 seconds! Imagine that in a smaller, lighter production car. It would match the vq.
I love my vq
Can I put HR heads on a 2013 maxima 3.5
Major question my O2 3.5 SE Altima didn't have an auto tensioner pulley. I get new belts and after a couple of weeks would take him back to get tightened again. Drove me crazy that they didn't put a pulley tensioner in there. My question is does the 2017 Maxima have a pulley tensioner??
I could swear 05 z had regular de motors. Only 06 models had the "revup" motor I thought
They made two models in 2005 I have one it's the De they also made the rev up which have more hp but less torque it's the anniversary model but burn more oil
Sasha from onpoint now has a custom vq37 making 600hp NA.
Up to Speed ?
I'm looking at a 07 08 infiniti fx35 is that non rev-up and how is reliability long term thanks.
Anybody else got a infinite i35😅 I wish I got the g35
Just picked up an 03 r50 with the same motor. Having a hard time finding performance parts for it so wouldn't parts meant for an 03 350z fit the pathfinder motor? Haven't been able to find any info about it, can anyone point me in the right direction?
Wish the VQ30DE got this much love. I woder if it's possible to run hr anything on a 3.0.
Is it possible to swap this engine in my '95 Ford ranger 3.0l automatic
Does my 2005 manual 350gt skyline sedan have the rev up motor sorry if I sound dumb
no
You’re wrong only manuals got a revup. 05 only track and 35th anniversary manuals got it
What engine is in the 8th gen maxima? Is it a DE?
That’s what I’m wondering also !
In NZ out 350 HR's are 311 horsepower.
Absolutely love the VQ series! The Frontier 4.0 tall deck is super cheap. Under 500 bucks for the most part.
You can put the Frontier 4.0 into a 2006 Nissan Altima 3.5?
The VQ35DE was a Replacement for the VQ30DE not the VG the VQ series replaced the VG but not the 3.5 the 3.0 was the first VQ series Engine here in America. FYI Also find the VQ30DETT on wiki. They actually took out the VQ35DE 3.5 for the VQ30DE and made it twin turbo for their race series vehicles in JGTC and what not until they replaced it with their V8 VK48DE! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_VQ_engine
It's sounds awesome
Picked up a running pathfinder with the VQ for crazy cheap and as the trans starts to slip im thinking about putting the vq35de in my miata. Anyone here done a "refresh" on one? Is it worth it seeing as i already have the motor it should be cheaper to tune and build than buying a k series or something
I like them
Hey man; i'm a po boy looking to buy a 2001 pathfinder 2wd xe.
Yes, this line of engines uses a timing chain. And any engine can make it to 300,000, just maintain it, and check oil frequently on the VQ35de
Does the chain tensioner issue vary on where the engine was built? I hear some were made in the states. Where on the car can I find the info that tells me where the engine was built?
Look at the bore vs stroke, the bore is bigger than the stroke! 😮
It’s not like doing Naturally Aspirated mods are gonna be any more expensive then forced induction mods
Hahaha, I love the outtakes
The new maxima is where it’s at
How many years will they keep this engine? Simply astounding.
Is the VQ a Renault V4Y? Or it was designed entirely by Nissan?
Fully Nissan and just used in several Renault models under a different name
camshaft sensor on vq35 is suck
Hello from 2021! Prices are rising. I’ll never sell my 2003 Daytona Blue Track. ❤️🚙
06 auto has DE*
Hi. Can you describe how to tell the difference between VQ35DE standard and the REvUp version please?
LoneWolf Motorsport Rev up: front bumper. HR: Front bumper and hood
Easy. Look at the rev gauge on the dash. Redline starts at 6.5k, if it's the rev up the redline is at 7k.
The Rev up version of the VQ35DE adds an variable exhaust timing cams. So (visually) there are two circles on each of the camshaft covers, on both the left side and right side of the motor. One solenoid mounted to each of the cam shaft covers. Facing the front of the motor Left side has a green solenoid connector, the right side has a blue connector. the VIN number will tell you also
Nissan Pathfinder 2001
I got one too....luv it with all new mods....extensive....$35000 worth....wanna race?
I own a first year 350 low in production number below the first 3500 in the world and I have loved owning this car every min even after I broke the fucker over and over racing around like Bo and Luke Duke. Hahahhaa

Nissan murano 2004
Yes
some info incorrect but not bad
Yes this video is pretty old. I’ve covered the VQ much better in more recent videos.
