    I always see folks making 2-ways with those AMTs and then I start to think “hey that’s a pretty cool driver; lemme look it up. WHOA! That’s a high Fs! What are they crossing those things at?” And then I start to have doubts and think thoughts like “eh, idk about cones playing nicely above maybe 1500hz…” And so seeing that response chart, and your reaction, is very validating to my uninformed suspicions. Thanks!

    Great review, as per, with all of your objective measurements and analysis. Love to see it! As for the crossover, i totally agree, the off-axis response of those woofers probably isn't great up in that frequency range, but you're probably also starting to see lobing effects due to the distance between the drivers, probably accounting for the dip at the crossover point when going off-axis (again, just as with your commentary, just an educated guess based off the graphing you obtained).

    • @Elliott-Designs
      @Elliott-Designs Рік тому +1

      Just wanted to say, although certain aspects of the off-axis response were problematic, it's always really nice to see new speaker manufacturers entering the field. I think they did pretty well for a first time design. Although of course, much to improve on, as there always is 🙂

    Is there something different about those tweeters that makes it unnecessary to round over the front baffle edges to avoid diffraction? Or does the speaker's price point preclude the round over?

  • @RennieAsh
    @RennieAsh Рік тому +2

    As soon as I saw them I was thinking, that AMT won't really reach down to an optimal crossover frequency, especially with that spacing. Also the woofer has a huge impedance at resonance; most likely due to the large coil and no copper rings etc in the motor.
    I guess it's ok for a budget DIY with nice looking components. A 3 way option designed well would be great

    Forgot to mention the price, which is $700 for anyone that was wondering. Pretty pricey if you don't factor in the real wood veneer which is nice for the price category but is otherwise a pretty inaccurate speaker with questionable crossover design choices. There is a smaller 5.25" version for $570 that might do better being paired with that AMT, still I'd rather have something that is more neutral anyway.

    Great vid as always! Given the other things that company makes, these should be powered and DSP'd with two presets, full and half baffle step curves (plus owner adjustable). You could get so much more out of these units with active adjustable x-over and DSP tunability. That's all probably a price point issue, but they already make everything that would build what I described. Who better to bring that in at an attractive price point?

      The GRS tweeter can be crossed really low so why not try a two-way first with approximately 1.5Khz XO and see how that goes? Another option could be the larger Planar from GRS (6816 or 6825) crossed at 500-600Hz and 2Khz. That way you maintain the same kind of quality (with both mid and highs coming from planar drivers) in a very wide range. Mind you, those Planar drivers have relatively narrow dispersion so make sure you want that. @@flbassmaster5551

    • @Toid

      The difference with all of those companies are they are driver manufacturers. This is a speaker manufacturer that is also offering the drivers they purchase to manufacture their own speakers for sale. It would be like Klipsch all of a sudden making their drivers available to the mass market. I see that differently. A driver manufacturer almost has to come out with designs so that people know what they can do with them.

      @@xTinBenderX thanks for the sub! Although BMR tech significantly improves high-frequency response, it isn't perfect, so if you get a larger driver that has been balanced, it's still going to perform worse than a smaller one that's also been balanced. They seemed to just get everything right with the 2.5" Nick and I used. Both on and off-axis responses were the best out of all of them at the time. If you look at the 3.5"s response, both its on and off-axis responses were rather unruly, admittedly definitely not as much as another driver of its size though. Hence it still being great for a simple single driver speaker. Made one a while back, as a vented design, it was rather power limited (in terms of distortion) without a high-pass though.

    I don't understand why people say you can cross a midrange driver too high, old school speakers left them uncrossed on the high end most times just a simple bass blocker capacitor, and they sound better to me like that, especially if you use the style of drivers with a higher frequency response.

    • @Toid
      @Toid  10 місяців тому +1

      There’s a few issues with crossing them over too high that we’ve learned since the older speakers. First, every driver becomes directional after a certain frequency. That frequency is determined by the size of the driver. If you cross too high your speaker becomes too localized in a certain bandwidth meaning your best sound will be directly in front of it. Another issue that we found out is different drivers break up at different points causing more distortion in the speakers. This is often perceived as loudness, since it is unpleasant and you want someone to turn down the sound. Both of these concepts as well as others weren’t well understood as they are now.

    Great review! You obviously understand speaker design in depth.
    It seems to me that they are going out of their way to showcase that tweeter and that the design suffers as a result.
    Distortion tests generally prove that a good dome tweeter kicks the crap out of most everything else.
    A rising high frequency response in the top octave gives a false sense of air that becomes fatiguing in the long term. With my older ears, 15khz is about all I can hear anyway. I had too many years playing drums in rock bands and riding motorcycles without ear plugs. For my money, a higher end Morel tweeter sounds amazingly good, even with the top half-octave rolloff. What I find is that a good dome is dynamic and low in distortion. I suspect that this design could have benefitted from such a tweeter crossed at 2khz. It would be interesting to take that tweeter and add it as an off-axis "air" tweeter on an l-pad, crossed over very high, just to add an adjustable amount of "air" effect.

    When I can't hear anything above 13,000 Hz, a capacity to play at 40KHz doesn't mattet to me. When I can't hear anything below 50Hz, a capacity to play at 42Hz doesn't matter to me, either. So I want a subwoofer connected. Then, I can hear down to 30Hz. 😁

    Just no, to anymore budget 50 WPC amps. 100 WPC into "8" ohms should be a baseline for residential audiophile use. On top of that, they're geared towards the most inefficient type speakers, which has these amps mostly running near clipping. Now it's gotten normal to rate amps at 4 ohm, which used to be mostly reserved for car stereo. Now they use that rating to make it seem more powerful than they are.

      They seem to do music power ratings as well, further increasing the "Watts" number.

      50 watts is only 3db less than 100 watts. If you don't listen at high volume or have a fairly efficient speaker, 30 true watts can be plenty. I have put an oscilloscope on my speaker /amp while listening at concert levels and only seen voltage peaks equivalent to 60 watts at 8 ohms.

      It depends on music played. But in general 100W/8ohm with decent current reserve seems like a decent choice. I had once 50W/8ohm which doubled it's power down to 2ohms load. It was a very good choice for somewhat 90dB/2.83V sensitivity rating 3way floorstander.

    The “Golden Grail” in Home theater audio for most peoples is building a surround sound system on a budget. Under $1000 for AVR and Speakers. If you minus $400 for the AVR that leaves $600. You sound very knowledgeable and have the tools to measure speaker audio output. Can you make a video on DIY bookshelf speakers and center channel for 5.1 home theater setup ?… with 5 or 6 inch woofers and ATM tweeters ? And build some cross overs too. Can you do this on a $600 budget ?….Not including the box cabinets. Just the Speakers and Crossovers ?…..Home theater systems usually have a Subwoofer so they don’t need a lot of base but must AVR are about 100 amps per channel so the Speakers should be able to support 100 amps or more. Speakers that are NOT to BRIGHT but EASY on the EARS for Hours of listening enjoyment but can also image THX, DTS, Dolby Digital, and ATMOS Audio.
    I am sure the Speaker components are available I am just NOT an Expert in Building or Selecting Speakers so I don’t know which components to use ?…The Speakers in this Video are too expensive and I don’t need that type of base in bookshelf speakers because I have 12-inch Subwoofers. The ATM tweeter sounds like a good choice but which Driver should I use and which crossover design ?…..I have never built a crossover so I don’t know how to wire it up. I see videos from GR-research but he does not list the components ?….
